I will be staying the night in Savanah this Thursday. Any insight in local places that are a must - remember it is only one night : ) Thx!

Lot of info here and there have been a good number of strings fairly recently on Savannah (and its environs). Great town; enjoy!

Night on Ponce too, and much easier to secure some of it.

What part of Georgia? If you can get your hands on anything Burnt Hickory Brewery produces, I would highly recommend it.

The first two responses are my go to IPAs locally. Night in brussles is better IMO than Night on Ponce...

Go for Burnt Hickory. Extremely small brewery taking huge chances and mostly succeeding. Very DIY. A lot of national attention recently deservedly so!

Burnt Hickory Cannon Dragger, Transmigration of Souls, Night on Ponce, Tropicalia, and Terrapin Hi-5 are my favorite Georgia IPAs.

Burnt Hickory was kind of hard to find in Savannah last time I was there, as was Creature Comforts. Certainly Orpheus, Creature Comforts and Burnt Hickory are making the best hoppy beers. Terrapin and Sweet Water are going to be super easy to find and both make plenty of hoppy beers. Three Taverns does a great job as well. I'm also a fan of Jekyll's Hop Dang Diggity, though it is on the sweeter side.

If you want a beer bar, I'd suggest Distillery or Crystal. The Distillery is going to be what you expect in a beer bar. Crystal Beer Parlour has more of an antique restaurant feel. Both will have good beer lists.

If you want something brewed in Savannah, I like to stop in at Moon River, which is on Bay St down in the historic area. Whenever I'm in town I get one of their Brett beers, if you're into that kind of thing.

Oh, and if you weren't already aware, you can get your beer in a plastic cup and walk around outside when you're in the historic district. All of the bars I mentioned are in the history district. It's where all the squares are when you're looking at a map.

Savannah has some competent breweries of their own, with Coastal Empire leading the way, followed by Southbound and Service Brewing.

Coastal Empire is a great Georgia brewery, IMHO, but they're overlooked because they're not an Atlanta/Athens brewery. I've not had any experience with their IPAs or pales, but I can tell you that their Dawn Patrol Stout and Southern Delight Praline are awesome. If not these two, then do give something from Coastal Empire a try.

If you're into IPAs or other "summertime" beers, then Southbound Hoplin and Scattered Sun might be more your speed.

There's more to Georgia beer than what we're brewing in ATL and Athens.

I'll second Southbound Hoplin. We hardly ever see it in my area (South Georgia) so I forgot about it in my earlier post, but it's a great IPA IMO.

Have to admit that I'm a bit surprised by that. I would expect that the beer coming out of Savannah would be easier to find in South Georgia, not less.

Not in my area. Of the beers that I listed, I can only find Transmigration of Souls, A Night on Ponce, and Terrapin Hi-5 regularly. I've never seen any Southbound beers down this way.

All beer in Georgia seems to go through Atlanta (thanks 3-tier system!).

Well, that. A shame that beer being made in other parts of Georgia doesn't seem to be making it back there, however.

Savannah isn't really south Georgia, though. I mean geographically it is, but regionally it's separate. There's tons of Savannah-brewed beer in Savannah.

Good to know for the OP's sake.

As someone whose family comes from the North Georgia mountains, grew up in Augusta, went to college in Milledgeville, and now resides in metro Atlanta, I totally get what you're saying. But at times I find it more convenient to simply divide the state into north and south based on, what else, the Gnat Line. Of course it totally infuriates my wife from Cochran ("Middle Georgia, not South Georgia!")

All that being said, we have some large second-tier cities in Georgia. Brewing is well established in Savannah, but what about Columbus, Macon, and Augusta? Frankly, I thought that Macon Beer Company was ho-hum and hoped for better. And in Augusta, you actually have to drive to Aiken to find a place brewing its own beer (which I liked). But given the sheer size of Georgia, you'd think there'd be more going on.
