I have amassed a nice grouping of bottles for a tasting to celebrate graduating with my Master’s degree. They are all stouts or barleywines. I definitely want to pop the Rare and KH, but beside that, I am not sure. Anyone have any tips for maybe the order to drink them/how many to drink/which to drink/what to eat with or in-between each beer/anything else I should keep in mind? I saw the tips for the epic sour tasting - and they were very helpful - but I thought it might be a little different for stouts and barleywines. I am planning on having at least 5 people over for the tasting. All help is greatly appreciated! Huge shout out to all of the awesome BA’s who hooked me up  !! What I have to choose from:

Rare, KH, Melange No 3, BCCS, Dark Lord ’11, Mother of All Storms ’11, KBS ’12, BB Plead the 5th, Hunahpu, BCS Bramble, Barrel Roll No 4 Hammerhead, FW15th Anniversary, Abyss 08-11, Backwoods Bastard, BCBS 09-11, BA Yeti, BA BORIS, Marshal Zhukov, Old Raspy XIV, Older Viscosity

I hope you plan to have way more than 5 people over, plan to have the tasting over a few days or live real close to a hospital. I see about 19 22oz/750ml bottles and at least 5 12oz bottles with almost all of them above 12%ABV. Good luck with that.

BTW, great collection you have gathered and congrats.

That's an epic list man, I'd definitely have more than 5 people over if you're doing it in one night, or break it up over a few nights.

haha Thanks! Yea, there is no way the 5 of us could kill all of those bottles in one night. I am thinking maybe 10 of those total as long as a few were 12oz bottles to split. Any good food pairings or snacks to go with these big beers?

Everything but the BORIS and Yeti is north of 10% ABV, make sure that if there is only 5 of you to take it slow! Congrats on the Master's Degree and that excellent selection!

crackers/pretzels.... gonna do it blind? I would take all of them and put them into small brown bags and secure with a rubber band and number the bags. I would take it another step and black out caps too. Then guess what each are according to number. Get rid of all pre-conceived notions or biased and just score tastes for the taste to start.

    BTW congrats.

Doing it blind is a great idea and would probably be loads of fun! Would probably have to stick to one style then maybe ... like just a few BA stouts from the list. Or maybe do 3 or 4 of the ba stouts and 3 or 4 of the ba barleywines. It would be fun to blindly put Rare and KH against 2 or 3 other solid beers.

When else will you ever have such a great list of beers to try blindly side by side. Interested hearing the results, esp if you did it like this.

The blind tasting sounds like the path I will probably go for this. I will definitely post the results. But what beers to put up against Rare and which to put up against King Henry? Suggestions? I was thinking Rare, Melange No 3, BB Plead, and KBS or Dark Lord in one bout and then KH, MoAS, Hammerhead, Backwoods in another.

I would not put any against any, split into BW and RIS then blindly pull RIS vs RISs or BW vs BWs that way you dont know at all what you have. All you know is 1:10 is the Rare instead of say 1:5.

That makes sense. Thanks for the advice!
