Hello. I'm going to make my first trip to your great state in a couple of weeks. I'm headed to South Padre Island. So what should I look for? The only beer I've had from your great state, besides Shiner, is Southern Star Buried Hatchet Stout (which I love). I also have a 4 hour layover in Houston at George Bush Airport (not my choice, airline changed the flight). Is there anything I should look for there?

    Thanks in advance.

IAH won't have much in terms of beer. You may find a pub with some karbach or some St. Arnold at the airport, but be weary as I'm not so sure they keep their lines clean. As for when you're traveling within the state. I would echo @Smokingtony and say Real Ale is some great stuff.

What kind of beer are you looking for? Karbach, St. Arnolds are safe choices depending on style and availability down in South Padre may be limited.

If you go through Corpus Christi, hit up Liquid Town on Alemeda and Everhart. Best game in town.

I'm really looking for to try anything I can't get back in the frozen tundra of Minnesota, and if I find something good, check it into the bag to take home.

Solid beers. I really like the Full Moon Rye IPA. Or maybe some Hans Pils while walking the beach. Or maybe some Brewers Cut Project 20: Blackberry Saison. Take home some Sisyphus Barleywine style or a bomber of Real Heavy (Scottish Ale) or Three Lions (II Ipa). Many more SOLID beers.

South Padre Island Brewing Co should have some other Texas beers on tap.

Not sure where you are flying into or where you are staying (South Padre is one long ass island from Corpus to Mexico), that said Specs Online can help you locate a beer in that general area. If you are flying into Corpus then you can check for availability at there several stores. http://www.specsonline.com/cgi-bin/showpage?location=South+Texas

I'm flying into, and out of Harlington. Layover both ways at George Bush International. 4+ hour layover on my way in. My hotel is in the southern part of the island.

Ok cool I think you are talking about Harlingen tx, if that is the case HEB will probably be your best choice. I have never been to one there, but most of them carry a good bit if Texas breweries. They seem to have 3 liquor stores all within a few miles of each other. According to this picture, you might not be in a beer desert https://www.facebook.com/resacacityliquor. Also here is one HEB that has already been rated HEB Harlingen

Sorry, I can't spell, and it's worse after a beer or 2. I don't have a rental car (too cheap and probably drinking too much to drive). So I'm pretty much restricted to where I can walk or take the bus in Padre.

There's an HEB across the bridge. It will be your best bet. Otherwise, the brewery on the island is ok.

your 4 hour layover should be enough to grab a taxi and head out to D&Q or specs on smith st in Houston. As far as beer on the island or across in PI, well the selection isn't the greatest. You could grab a Taxi nad head into Brownsville, there are 2 good beer stores in that town.

Just wondering, if you'll be here on the 20th, there is a local craft beer group meeting up on that day. If you're interested I may be able to persuade them to hold the beer share at the island.

Yes, I will. If you do decide to do that, I will gladly check in my bag for the flight and bring a couple of brews from Minnesota. A good chance one would be BA Darkness.

Thank you for all your recommendations. I'm looking forward to some Real Ale, and everything else listed. Tomorrow can't come fast enough.

If you find Karbach Pils or Three Legged Lab, definitely grab those. They are new releases and both A+. As for Real Ale, I recommend anything in bombers or a mix-six pack if available (they are quite common). The bombers will be A+ and high ABV. The mix-six will likely be blonde, pale ale, and rye. Solid offerings, just a different breed of beer.

Mixed six packs are now Fireman's 4 (blonde), Devil's Backbone (tripel), and Lost Gold (IPA)
