so I'm making 10 gallons this coming Saturday and I need to make 2 starters or each yeast to divide half and half. I had origanlly planned on making one of the starters early Wednesday morning and letting it go until Thursday morning and then putting it in the fridge until Saturday. I would then start the other one Thursday morning or Thursday night and let it go until Saturday. What do you guys suggest I do here? Never really had to worry about this and I'm trying to go the best route here.

I have done what you suggest a couple of times, never had any problems. You can leave the first starter at room temp for an extra day if you are worried about it finishing in 24 hours, then crash both at the same time.

. . . or you could teach your yeast to share:

First-world brewing problems! Your approach is fine. Or, make both at the same time and rotate them on-off on the stir plate as suggested above. Or, just pick one up and swirl it whenever you walk by. If you're only pitching each starter into 5 gallons? Any of the above will work fine.

Shake and bake. I do it all the time. Honestly, if you aren't doing a huge beer you will be fine.

2 or 3 2 liter bottles, rinsed and sanitized. Less yeast in more wort is usually a better thing on a small scale.

Estimated OG is 1.051, so yea I agree, it'll be fine. Thanks for the input.

Going to go this route. I just hope that my larger stir bar doesn't give me hell. It tends to get thrown out often.

Psh, 2 smack packs and you're done.

I'm using 2 white labs strains. And one is "technically" expired.

Just so happens to be 565 and I've read it tends to stall quite easily.

Two flasks and a receptacle wall plate made from granite.
Some people have everything for their brewery.

Even a little time in a starter solution will wake up the yeast if not multiply cells. You don't need too much for 1051. Making a starter, even with an older vial, is probably not required but certainly a good idea. I might just worry about the expired yeast and pitch the other fresh.

    Cheers.

I just bought my first stir plate today and have made over 20 starters without it. sooooo I think you will be ok without. or just rotate.

. . . I'm more proud of having 20 amp circuits. Okay, you really don't need a 2000 watt stir plate, but you never know when you may have to run an air compressor or do some arc welding in the kitchen:

In the past, I've tried to shut my stir bar up. Too loud. I collapsed an empty 6er box on top of the plate and underneath the flask. It was quiet. The magnet was likely to get thrown off. Maybe you'll have better luck? Change can't always be bad.

I got it setup in one of the guest bed rooms, so the noise is nothing for me.
