I, personally, can't find any consistency to Nelson hop beers. Some taste mildly citric and lemony.
Others (like Alpine's) taste like a glass full of red onions.
I can't think of any other hop that I both love and hate like that. Simcoe occasionally tastes like cat pee, but that's rare. Whenever I try a new beer made with mostly Nelson Sauvin, it's a total crapshoot.

I'm not sure I've experienced that problem. Nelson Sauvin gives me fits. I'm drinking a farmhouse right now that's saturated with Nelson and it's glorious. Beer'd Hobbit Juice utilizes Nelson superbly, too.

I think it's just my palate. More and more "west coast" style IPA's taste oniony to me. I think it's the recent trends of late hop additions. That captures a certain vegetal note that I just can't handle and some hops accentuate it a lot.

Chris, IMO that is the real driver here. There are some hop varieties that just do not suit some people's palates.

I am also not a fan of Nelson Sauvin hops. The hop experts use the descriptor of "gooseberry" for the aroma/flavor of this hop. I have never eaten a gooseberry but based on my experience with Nelson Sauvin hopped beers I have zero (and I do mean zero) interest in ever eating a gooseberry food item!!

    Cheers!

Sad to hear, really like Nelson. I think I would be sad not being able to drink beers with Mosaic Hops, one of my favorites...

The real question @TheIPAHunter is why is there a shortage? I also consider nelson Sauvin from NZ hops to be my favorite. Is the shortage a ploy to drive up the price or are there climate changes that have caused the problem? Is demand too high for the supply? Has Alpine and the new merged company decided that the bottom line warrants a slow down because profits will be hurt by the increase of price for the commodity? Maybe some farm land in the North East of the US for a business opportunity?

There are only <1000 acres of all the hop types grown in NZ. About 43000 total for the US. NZ and AU hops have very high demand, higher than any US hop. NZ is harvesting 2016 hop now-ish. It takes time to process, ship, and clear customs. My guess is the supply of 2015 hops from NZ has been used up. Keep in mind that hops have good and bad growing years.

I love Alpine Nelson, walked into a bottle shop a few weeks ago that I rarely visit and they had very old Nelson on the shelves, so old there was no Best By date. I believe it was bottled by Alpine before Green Flash began bottling. I almost grabbed few before I notice the dust on the bottle's neck, did not find a date, and set'em back down. :slight_frown:
