    Bourbon-barrel-aging really suits barlewines, eh?
After all those English barleywines, this really caught me off-guard - so chewy and dense and hearty - a rugged beer with airy vapors of whiskey and wood over layers of boozed fruits and musky grains.

Surprised my review was so above the average.

    New Biscotti Break Sunday

I missed last week's episode due to moving-related distractions, so I get to check in from a totally new part of the world! I started nursing school on Tuesday here in Saint Louis. I had never set foot in the midwest (my Colorado friends have informed me VEHEMENTLY that Colorado is not the midwest) before Monday night, so this has been a whole new experience for me. As it is an accelerated program, the week was incredibly full (class/labs 8 hours a day every day), so having a chance to breathe this weekend has been nice.

The first week has been a lot of review for me (apparently CNA training was NOT a requirement for this program, and there's been a lot of overlap between my CNA stuff and labs this week), but even still it's a lot of material in a limited amount of time. Some of my classmates decided we should get to know each other outside of class; this being the first weekend opportunity we've had, so Friday night I began my trek to their selected bar for the evening. About halfway through the 2.5 mile walk I started hearing what sounded like air raid sirens, and immediately started receiving urgent phone calls and texts from my sister. Apparently this is Tornado country, and one had touched down just north of the city (I guess?). All we got was a torrential downpour of rain. There was a lot of fantastic lightning as well, so I didn't even really mind walking home in the rain.

At the bar I decided to begin my Missouri beer education and went for the Double Wide IPA from Boulevard, and got the classic, 'it's kind of strong, so what, is it a dark beer?' question from the girl sitting next to me. Neither here nor there, but you gotta love when stereotypes show their face, ha.

I've been catching up on stuff over the weekend that I didn't get to (thanks to the move), and was delighted to find that I have access to the gym here on campus, so one of my classmates and myself spent the afternoon playing basketball. Feels really good to get back on the court, and I'm glad I actually found a location to consistently satisfy that itch in this new city (Two of the last three places I lived I never found a good court/consistent game). Now I get to scrounge dinner as playing basketball replaced going to the grocery store (the nearest one is like a 45 minute walk: LAME), and I haven't filled my fridge/pantries yet.

Oh, yeah: the beer. I picked this up back in Seattle before I moved, and just stashed it in my checked luggage. Real glad I did. A solid imperial stout: very smoothe and drinkable. This is a characteristic I've noticed in the last couple of dark offerings I've had from Evil Twin, and I really like it.

So... yeah. Drink it. Enjoy yourselves fellow NBSers, and cheers!!

    >>>>>> New American Wheat Ale <<<<<<

Checking in from eastern Washington with the Goose Island 312 Urban Wheat Ale, but of the somewhat controversial Baldwinsville, NY variety.

A real average American Wheat, and from what I've heard of this beer I'm not sure Inbev has anything to do with it. I wasn't real excited about this beer, and it lived down to my expectations. I like my wheat ales a little wetter with less of a hop profile than this.

That said, it did look pretty good in the glass.

Unsettled here in the Columbia Basin on this High School Graduation Day. We have had a series of thunderstorms roll though, although our thunderstorms are kittens compared to those roaring lions that go through the Midwest. Best wishes for the safety and speedy rebuilding for our friends out in the plains. For now it's pleasant, we are in a sun break with temps in the low 60's. But I can see the next line of storms on the horizon and I expect them to arrive by early evening, hopefully just after I get the grill shut off.

    Until next time... Happy Trails!

It's chilly and damp here on Chicago. Typical June. However, I finally got a chance to crack open one of the NG Berliner Weiss from my fridge. This might be my favorite of their Thunbprint line yet.

I don't have time to do a full review this week (my SIL's sister made a suprise visit from San Diego and we're having an impromptu party.). But it's really crisp, fruity, slightly sour and still very smooth. I haven't been fond of sours before this beer, but I may be changing my tune after it. Happy Sunday to everyone!

    New Made in Michigan Bitter

Another great weekend in West MI playing prelude to summer. Temps cooled a bit today, as I think it was pretty much a solid 60s sort of day with blue skies.

Got in a 6 mile run, hit the pool at The Y with the family, and tore into some Steak N Shake for the first time since college. Combined with a solid result from OUR USMNT and USWNT, I'm calling it a good day.

Now on to a solid brew to compliment the good vibes...

Alright, I hope I'm doin' this right, I've never posted in NBS before, so uh ... bear with me:

First of all, I'm slightly peeved at myself as I thought the most versatile glassware I could take with me on a cross country trip was a pint glass. Lo and behold, I find this nice lookin' Belgian Strong Pale Ale, ah - I scream to myself after I buy it - hey you idiot, you don't have a snifter, a tulip or a chalice with you, why did you buy this?

Oh crap, well, this is what I can provide from the incorrect glassware if anyone cares, the picture is in the "what are you drinkin' now #225":

Epic Brewing's Brainless Belgian Style Golden Ale:

    Into a pint glass:

A: holy floaties (think that's the yeast perhaps) all over the place through an extremely hazy orange/yellow body, one finger white foamy head quickly dies and leaves a film coating the top of the beer, carbonation seems to bounce through the haze off of the floaties, (boy this is interesting to watch)

S: slightly yeasty, that iced apples thing goin' on [reminds me of an Allagash Tripel], some slight lemon/citrus thing goin' on as well

T: yeasty yet somewhat bittersweet and that iced apples comes back to indulge me more to partake further, sweet aftertaste, dry yeasty finish

M: medium, somewhat sessionable - maybe, carbonation seems to be right on, ABV seems to be hiding a bit

O: wish I brought a chalice, snifter or tulip on this road trip, would've loved to actually review this for actual stats, but my own stupid fault thought I needed to pack light and thought a pint glass was the most versatile, alas, I hope to find this brew again and review it for what its worth and the correct glassware, however, in the meantime, I still would definitely have this one again and recommend it to Belgian lovers
