Good morning prophets of Pale Ale and forecasters of Flanders!

I hope this message finds you ready for another fine rendition of all things new and beer related. Weather in Central OH is HOT and sticky. Pretty typical summer weather has finally set in. Some of the local bottle shops have started advertising for fall beers which seems a little crazy at the moment but still nice to see that there are lots of tasty things on the horizon.

Ended up having a Brew Kettle Solstic Wit this week which complemented the weather really nicely. Tart, slightly acidic, and some background coriander made it very refreshing. I didn't take any tasting notes but I'll probably re-visit it at some point.

Speaking of...today is the day and this is the place to try a NEW BEER and TELL us about it. Linked reviews are most appreciated but good descriptions of what you had is the minimal "cover charge" to play today. Pictures are always appreciated if you feel so inclined.

I've been studying pretty hard all morning so I think I'll be taking the kiddos to the pool this PM to try and beat the heat. I don't know if I have anything new in the wings but if I do I'll be sure to share with y'all. Regardless, I'll be back later to see what fine grog has graced your gullet.

Thanks for keeping NBS fresh, informative, and fun.

    Peace, love, and malty-ness,

    Matt

Good Morning Matt and all the posters here on NBS!

Well, I am not known for my green thumb. Except for plants I eat, I don't have a one in my house. I've even killed bamboo. But I saw a lavender plant and said "gimme that." I live in an apartment so I have a tiny square in which to put anything. It's too sunny for the lilies of the valley I planted which now grow amazing twisted leaves over the tiny white bell like flowers to protect them from what they think is the blazing sun. The lavender plant thinks it's too shady and grows out huge stalks and has only tiny flowers at the very tip top where they have met their beloved sun. I wasn't expecting any blooms at all. The butterflies love it and so do the bumblebees. I have to admit I laugh out loud when I see the butterflies, and secretly when I see the neighbors do the "BUMBLEBEE!" dance. I made some lavender infused vodka with it.

Of course I have been up since long before the crack of dawn and I tired my second schwarzbier today. I hit the yoga mat and the pavement before I started any drinkin'. This style is starting to grow on me.

AW! Powdered donuts and twinkies! Try once more and I'm sure it will be on. I just read your review and I have come to the conclusion that pink elephants are good but pink beer bottles are bad.

Hidey Ho neighbors! Before I get into my new brews for today, I'd like to ask a question of the NBS regulars. Is there any interest in doing a NBS BIF? I've never done one,but this seems like a good way for all of us to try some each others' brews. We cover pretty much most of the country between us, so it's be interesting I think. Just mention your interest in your post, and we'll see how it goes.

Sorry, I've been trying to formulate my thoughts on this without simply comparing it my reference point, Supplication.

Due to my wine preference, I thought I would enjoy this more than Sup due to the cab sauv barrels. This is a darker brew, with the currants adding more subtle sweetness. Dirty maroon in color, this one is more mellow than the other I'm trying to avoid mentioning a lot. Really enjoyed this one, due have to say I preferred the other. If you like barrel aged sour this one is definitely up there and worth seeking out. Cheers.

    NEW IPA SUNDAY

Good afternoon all, seasonably sweltering in Lancaster of late. An early walk with the little guy followed by coffee and the paper on the front porch. The view this morning.

Hot and gross on the tropical island of Long. How people lived before a/c is beyond me.

I had an Ovila dubbel a while back, and it was very clever-looking, a 12-oz. bottle with a cage and cork, but nothing to write home about taste-wise, although I'm not a frequent drinker of dubbels.

Figured I'd try their new Abbey Saison (with mandarin oranges and peppercorns).
The cage and cork is pretty fun...
Most of my (attempted) pics came out like crap - maybe that was a sign...
    Ovila Abbey Saison

I've had enough saisons (especially recently) to know what I like and what I don't like, and this just wasn't my cup o' tea. I try to drink new beers with an open mind, but it didn't matter much here. I think the peppercorn and mandarin orange infusion made it taste kinda weird :astonished:. I would never have pegged this as a saison in a blind-tasting.

    Looks better here ^
Well, I hate posting a "meh" review in NBS :slight_frown:, but... *shrugs*

    David Coverdale mode today...

Quick edit: the band on this album is not who you see in most of these photos - Slide It In featured the legendary Jon Lord and Cozy Powell on keys and skins, respectively, with Mel Galley and John Sykes on guitar, and Neil Murray on bass .

Luckily, I've got these on tap for later:
I'm looking forward to them individually, but I'm also psyched to make a black & tan (yin & yang :stuck_out_tongue:) outta them, too!

    'Later...

Yes!!!!!!!!!!! It is the Super Sunday Sour! After quaffing many bottles of the brand new New Glraus Wild Sour Ale, I broke out the king of Wild Sours to see how New Glarus compared. I love this stuff, but New Glarus has an incredible beer that can hold its own. My review.

Yin and Yang are two awesome beers that make ( from what I hear only because I drank both of mine separately) the quintessential black and tan. I loved that yang did not try scald me with hops and that yin was not terribly sweet.

I'm jealous that you beat me to the black and tan with those but it's my own fault.

Greetings fellow NBSers! Another sunny, warm day up here in the Fourth Corner. Big, beautiful blues skies, and not a cloud in sight. I feel like I'm getting an early start while watching NASCAR, but BitterBill always seems to be up at the crack of dawn to start his NBS, makes me feel like a slacker! The annual Pride Parade and fest is going on in my town today, and I may go watch some of the festivities later. Except for their love of terrible dance music, the organizers throw a great party! My first NBS brews is from my old neighborhood of Upstate NY:http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/3818/47151/?ba=beertunes . I was surprised to see I hadn't had this version before. I've got some bottles in the fridge if I can't find any other new brews on tap, so I will certainly see y'all later!

    New APA Sunday

    Greetings NBSer's,

It's been warm to hot here lately, but today we get the addition of humidity. It just makes it unpleasant to want to be outside. But is also was preceded by a rain of 3.33 inches on Saturday a.m., which was appreciated by mostly everybody. Once the weather finally made it to growing season this year, it has actually been pretty decent for most plants. I'll tend to the garden today, more like this evening, after having the grandkid over for a sleep over last night.

I'm keeping my NBS theme of last week with both an APA and a top three for category at the U.S. Open Beer Championship. This one was in 2nd place and for most of the country shouldn't be too difficult to find. My scores also reflex a preference for the winner over this one, although on hot day like today, this one would be perfectly fine.

    Best to all this week.

    New BBA Stout Sunday
]]Silent Night by Mother Earth Brewing[[

    http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/21193/63899/?ba=kemoarps
Well, I missed last week's gathering because I was out in the DC area celebrating my best friend's wedding. Can't express how happy I am for Thomas and Becky. Y'all are the best, and are amazing for each other. DID however get to try some new brews while I was out there; was blown away by the Smuttynose Porter, and thoroughly enjoyed Morning Glory (Old Dominion) and Hopsecutioner (Terrapin). And we won't talk about Natural Bohemian *shudder*.

Aside from some immature petty bullshit the weekend was an amazing reunion with some of my favourite people in the world. Plus I made money sponsoring my college roommate's playing in the WSOP! So there's that.

As for the here and the now: I've almost worked my way through the entire lineup that brentk56 sent me in trade shortly after I moved into my new apartment, and the hits keep coming.
Silent Night is really hitting the spot for me right now on a sunny Saint Louis afternoon that I am unable to enjoy because of eye irritation (ER said conjuctivitis because they couldn't find any abrasions or anything, but they weren't real confident about the diagnosis, more of a 'well, we don't know what else to tell you!'). I've been gooping ointment onto my eyeball for the past four days and it still doesn't seem to be getting any better. At least it just hurts and isn't constantly itching. I'd much rather put up with pain than itching. Weird, I know, but it is what it is. You can't see it in the pictures, but I've been rocking an eye patch all weekend. YARR!!!
For lunch I decided to finish off some pumpernickel chicken nuggets I made the other night, with red white and blue potatoes. In retrospect I should have done the potatoes with bleu cheese. That would have been tasty. Oh well. Next time.
Also pretty excited because I found a dude on the internet (I know how that sounds) who is trying to downsize his cellar and is selling off some exciting stuff at cost, so I've got some exciting vintage stuff coming in pretty soon.

Alright, I guess I'm done boring y'all to death with the minute details of my life. Thanks for being the closest I get to human interaction outside of class and clinicals and happy NBS!!

oh. and PS. I'd potentially be down to get involved in an NBS BIF. NBD. umm.. I'm running out of acronyms. But bullshit aside, I've never been involved with a BIF, but would love to share some of what St. Louis has to offer and see what the rest of the country produces. Uhh... cheers? yeah. Cheers!

New (American) Belgian Pale Ale Sunday !!!

Greetings to the NBS group from a hot and sunny Jersey Shore. This morning's dew point reading was 73; that'll give you an idea of what kind of day it is around here.

I picked up this Ommegang offering when released this Spring: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/42/91497/?ba=NiceTaps. I held on to it until a day like today and it worked out well, quite refreshing.

Time to hit the pool - again.

    Playing on the patio now....

    Cheers, and all the best!

55 laps to go and my boy Smoke is leading the NASCAR race. My local, where I generally do my NBSing from, had a tap takeover a few nights from one of my favorite Seattle breweries. There's still a couple I haven't had on tap, including this very nice ImpIPA:http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/19764/96609

Been listening to some of my old David Coverdale stuff (Whitesnake and Deep Purple) since I randomly saw one of those "then and now" pics of David Coverdale yesterday:
A little weird, but not too bad...

I'm a fan since the Deep Purple days (I actually have Burn and Stormbringer on vinyl :grimacing:)...

This was a great 'Purple line-up (Blackmore, Lord, Paice), but with Coverdale on vox, and Glenn Hughes replacing Roger Glover on bass (and assisting with vocals).

Now, review accomplished, I'm enjoying some snacks with my new beer...
The gouda, aged 18 months, is insanely good...

Gonna be working this angle a little later...
