Good morning Chinook chompers, Fuggles finders, and Kent Golding cravers! I hope this message finds you ready for another Sunday of all things good, fermented, malty or hoppy in your nonics, snifters, and chalices today!

Weather in Central OH has been cool but beautiful most of the week. Got some yard work done this morning and was thinking today would be a perfect day for some of those session IPA's I've seen all over the shelves this week. I must admit, if I want an IPA, I prefer the "real deal" but I may have to have more in my arsenal for this summer.

I had the privilege of sampling Pliny the Elder this week thanks to Tammisbutler. It delivers as advertised and the hype is well deserved. Per the label, I drank it as soon as I got it (twist my arm, right?) so the review is already in the books. But I should be able to find something today that will make the NBS cut.

Speaking of....today is the day and this is the place for you to TRY a new beer and TELL us about it here. Please find a beer that's new to you, drink it, and give us a GOOD description of what you had. A good description is our simple "cover charge" to ensure the uniqueness of the thread and keep it going every week. Feel free to blow our minds with linked review, pics, videos, and other world wide web wizardry to enhance our virtual tasting session. Thanks for keeping NBS fresh, informative, and fun.

    Good day and good drinkin'.

    Peace, love, and malty-ness,

    Matt

    New Oktoberfest Sunday

    Greetings NBSer's,

For those fond of seasonal beers I throw a wrench into fire (to mess up all sorts of metaphors). It's a perfectly glorious cool and rainy day here in SCMN. And Summit decided that it's spring "unchained" beer would be "Fest bier". So far the ratings on BA are quite high for this style, so I thought I'd give it a go.
    A truly enjoyable lager, indeed.

There you are. HIya NBS! OH holy goodness did I try some awesome beers of late. The two new ones today re Wheat is the new Hops by Mikkeller and Grassroots and then I also have another collaboration between Hill Farmstead and Anchorage. (Don't shoot me I am only the piano player but I really liked the collaborations with HF better than some of the HF offerings.)

SO today I have a a very special beer. This is Mikkel Borg Bjergsø 's collaboration with Grassroots, Wheat is the New Hops. Grassroots is a subsidiary of Hill Farmstead and Mikkeller is a phantom or a gypsy brewer who despite the fact he does not operate a brewery has won the title best Danish brewery twice and fifth best brewery in the world twice also. This is my first beer from Mikkeller ever.

Grassroots/Mikkeller Wheat is the New Hops

The beer pours with stately and pristine beauty to the glass. A lightly hazed and pastel lemon straw color with a crown of pillowy white foam that is slow to fall and clings to the glass leaving plenty of lace.

Nose is airy. The wheat is golden and subtly sweet grain. A bit of yeast that is powdery and silken on the nose. Instead of funky it's more of a light dry scent and the brett is as light as a feather. There is a brilliant hop floral on this nose. Rose petals. For fruit a delicious ripe peach.

Taste is refined and demure. These flavors are all perfectly balanced and mysteriously complex. For an IPA that is rare. The malt is soft and gently sweet. The hops have the lightness of fresh rose petals. The yeast is demure and a bit sultry. The bitter on this one is perfection. It's also gentle and somehow proper. The mouthfeel is creamy.

Rather than run roughshod over your palate like so many of today's IPA's this one is exquisite. It has polish and elegance. It's a like a pretty bird that you have to stand far away to see or you might scare it away.

( I wrote the same thing here as I did there so you don't have to look it up)

@garymuchow I love that you are drinking an Oktoberfest this time of year!

Happy NBS and may you all have a delicious new brew to share today. I am imbibing a new stout on this ominous and overcast day in Southern WI. Seems like we will not see the sun again until Friday. This new stout from New Holland is quite enjoyable and has all the flavors I want in this style of beer. Notes of dark bakers chocolate, rich milk chocolate, dark fruits, and even hints of sorghum. Yum! A very nice stout that may be overlooked in the Great Lakes region.

Sometimes descriptions can set the bar too high. The name itself is pretty cool. Says dark belgian brewed with vanilla, cinnamon, and oak chips. I thought there was a chance this may be one of the more unique beers I have had, like Palo Santo Maron, but I think it tastes similar to many others in the style. I did taste a little if the aforementioned items as it warmed to room temp. I think it is pretty good, and I enjoyed it. 3.75

As expected, chocolaty and creamy; milk stout-sweet and smooth - light and fluffy...

Green Man The Demon Dweller (Boubon Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout). This is not good and is NOT an Imperial Stout. It tastes more like a high gravity Schwarzbier. The body is way too thin/light for any Imperial Stout, especially for a BA. I'm barely getting any bourbon either. I wouldn't be happy even if I paid $10 for it, but at $20 a 750mL

I am just playing music because I drank all my beer.

I'm stuck in the 50' and 60's oh help . . . I thought of this one because of @Greywulfken saying he was getting his review on. That's for NBS yes? How come lots of girls sang songs long ago but not so much anymore?

This is my new to me beer this week. I've seen it around for quite some time and it gets good press so I finally tried it. I was not disappointed. This is a very good pale ale. Rather hoppy (not quite an IPA) and just smooth and delicious. Honestly, part of the decision was that it's in cans. I'm tellin' ya, I'm a can convert! It's not my primary criterion (e.g. Southern Tier does not can), but given a choice for the same beer it's a can every time now.

Good morning, NBSers! So much going on today: the sun finally came out, and it's lovely outside; Spring is bleeding all over the yard; and I'm getting a ton of housework and projects done (not to mention I've got to pack up a box later tonight!).

Last night was a big local beer tasting; by my count, 17 of the beers were new for me. Samples only, but based on those, allow me to share with my NBS friends the very few that stood out:
Rogue Farms 7 Hop IPA - Rogue is too expensive and too scattershot to risk buying bombers. That said, this was a really tasty and fresh IPA. Hop-forward, slightly sweet, vegetal, dank, citrusy - everything was going on here. 4.0
Cottrell Brewing Perry's Revenge - A Scotch Ale/Wee Heavy. Thick and sweet in the mouth; malt, dark fruit, nuts. By far the best beer I've tried from this very small local brewery. 4.0
Sam Adams Thirteenth Hour - This is a "stout" according to BBC. It's a BSDA according to me (and according to BA, it turns out). Very, very sweet, extremely malt forward. Dark fruit, plums, cherries, and chocolate. I'd definitely buy a bottle of this. 4.0

    //

Anyway, back to the present. I picked up a bottle of Stone Spröcket to support my local bottle shop the other day. In the midst of home projects, and with Opeth on 5.1 surround sound, I figured it was time to give it a shot. I had medium hopes: it looked like a good beer, but they also called it a Kölsch which, based on the beer itself, is offensive in at least 4 different ways.

OK, Stone: challenge accepted. If you've going to pretend this is a Kölsch, I'm going to bring out the proper(ish) glassware:

First off, it's a beautiful beer. Absolutely beautiful. It's got a strong rye and weak cherry nose, a rye black ale flavor (similar to FW Wookie Jack), and a soft mouthfeel that really impressed me. You know what? It's a very good beer. Earthy hops; tons of rye character; a hint of cherry; some dark barley.

    Review here:
    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/147/118447/?ba=Roguer
    3.88 / +2.4%

But it's not a Kölsch, damnit.

Hmm, according to one of my bier steins, Köln is nowhere near Escondido, CA. Huh - whoda thunkit?

    Cheers, BAs!

Was working out in the yard earlier, but the rain has forced me indoors. That must be a sign that it's time for NBS!

I've been in a bit of a barley wine kick as of late, so I thought it only appropriate to go with one today. I settled on Firestone Walker's Sucaba from 2013. Have to admit, this is clearly a world class barley wine, and one of my favorites in the group. I just need to find a 2014 bottle now.

I've heard others comparing it to BCBW, and I might prefer this one just a hair more, but both are wonderful.

    Cheers!

Beer number two for New Collaboration Beer Sunday! I loved this beer. Delicate and fruity, dry and champagne like. Here's my review.

    Cheers y'all =)

New Oak-Aged Irish Dry Stout/Export Stout Hybrid Sunday
    Greetings, fellow NBSers,
52 degrees and cloudy in the city that will be teeming with "Bloomies" a week from now. Today would prove a little unpleasant for running, as less than an hour ago it was pouring rain with the addition of pebble-sized hail stones. Ah, the Inland Northwest in the springtime...

Today I went with a bit of a style-stradler. It's listed on the site as an Irish Dry Stout (or is it Dry Irish Stout...), but could just as easily be classified as an Export Stout, due to it's 7.5% abv.

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/21567/110197/?ba=woemad

Although Irish Dry Stouts don't tend to do much for me these days, and I've hitherto not much cared for Odin beers, I quite like this one, and hope they brew it again.

    New American IPA Sunday.

Greetings everyone, I hope that all is well with the NBS gang. A touch of Springtime has kissed the Jersey Shore today. The temp is 60ish with mostly sunny skies. The breezes have been sturdy of late and today is no exception.
In addition to NBS, today happens to be my daughter's 19th birthday. She's the best and she's mine.:slight_smile::slight_smile:

Ok, a quick new brew for dad (me) before we gather the troops and head out for birthday dinner. Last weekend there was a tap takeover by Neshaminy Creek Brewing at the local growler fill joint. I opted for Long Trail's Limbo but in the spirit of supporting an upstart, I picked up a bomber of Neshimany's IPA. Here goes:http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/29021/82161/?ba=NiceTaps

NBS just keeps getting better every week. Good reading and posts from everyone; there are Rouger and U-jane who word it so well, Greywulfken owns the pics ; And Garymuchow pulls out all the stops with The King, too cool. Not to mention Ri0, Matt and all the rest. Great stuff.

This has been my go-to tune for the last day or two, H F'n T during the rampage years. I was in attendance for this one. Yikes.

    All the best, everyone!

    Good afternoon NBS!

Had a great week of new brews and good business at work, now relaxing on Sunday with the NHL and NBA playoffs.

Trying out the Rising Tide Zephyr IPA.

Really pretty pour, golden orange color, nice white head.

A nice break from the super juicy, tropical IPAs I have been drinking. More grassy and floral. Very enjoyable. Overall, with the introduction of 4pks, Rising Tide is going to make a much more frequent appearance in my fridge.
