I'm going to catch a lot of hate for this one, but.....onward! New Stout Sunday awaits!

My beer of the moment is Brooklyn Black Ops. I've been psyched to try this for a while, and today was the day.

Beautiful beer...nice label ("Brooklyn Black Ops does not exist.").

(Aaaaand there it is. Bring on the hate.)

The nose is all bourbon and wood. It's the kind of aroma I'd expect from Alltech. The flavor and feel are more of the same: tons of bourbon, a lot of heat, some unexpected sourness.

I think this beer is most likely infected, but that's a leap I very tentatively take; I've only stood my ground on two beers being infected before. This one is so bourbon heavy, that perhaps it's just from a really poor barrel, or maybe the style completely misses the mark. I think it probably is infected.

Put it this way: it's bad enough that I'm not going to finish off the 750, and I'm going to come back with a better beer for NBS. I honestly can't finish a glass. (The wife agrees: way too much burning at the back of the throat.)

Thank you UtopiaJane for kicking us off today in style

Today I'm having AleSmith's IPA simply named IPA. In an age of increasingly convoluted and rather opaque names, the simplicity is refreshing! I've had and really enjoyed AleSmith's darker barrel-aged offerings, but this is the first time with any of their hoppy stuff. I am quite enjoying this: it's bold, spicy, clean and crisp. The tropical fruitiness and a bit of sticky sweetness really is coming out as it warms up. Thanks @Stoneman78 for this new one for me! Cheers BAs.

@Hopgoddess312 I am loving your posts in WBAYDN. Cheers! Alesmith IPA it was excellent. One BA called it "absurd." It sure was.

Greetings Fellow NBSers! A gorgeous, sunny, warm, beautiful day here in the Fourth Corner. Weather was decent most of the week, just a bit of cloudiness, but our annual bout of "June Gloom" (or as my friend, BA OKComputer calls it, Juneuary) will be along shortly.

I work part time at one of our local breweries, doing odd stuff that doesn't really fit anybody else's job description. One such occurrence happened last night. A very large software company based in our region has a team building exercise every year, and last night was their Beta-test of this years "Great Race". Basically, I stayed at the brewery from 10pm-6:30am, while they did their tests and found if their processes work. In July, they're coming back full-force, over 200 techies will invade us.

So after nowhere near enough shut-eye, here I am bleary-eyed and scraggly-tailed bringing you the latest. First up, a semi-surprisingly nice Pils from a brewery that, while never terrible by any means, rarely impresses me: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/5316/101181/?ba=beertunes .

If you're not familiar with this guy, I strongly suggest checking out his stuff:

BCBS to the rescue, and to remind me what a good BA stout is supposed to taste like!

Oh dear lord, thank you for this beer. What a palate-saver.

So, how is this hyped American Brett Saison? It's good; damn good.

Sweet, tart, and complex aroma, hinting at Brett, fruit, and wheat. On the tongue, sharp notes of Brett introduce themselves immediately, but are quickly followed by a softly sweet, thick malt body. Long sticky, slightly dry finish.

Delicate and soft, this immediately begs for another sip.

    Review below:

    4.55 / +5.8% for my highest-rated Saison.

Relaxing with one of the most beautiful pieces of music known to man. Or, at least, known to this man. Evgeny Kissin, playing Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 2 in B flat major, movement 2, Adagio.

Thanks, next time I'm in Ohio I'll look for one. Their prices aren't bad for a GOOD BA beer, but these two...yikes.

Doing some cardio before I drink this brew here. Did about 18 minutes hitting the heavy bag. Broke a sweat and now it's beer o'clock! Let's get in to the void! This pours a very beautiful color, nice honey orange/medium amber. Let's get a whiff! Fruits, fruits and more fruits. Nice pear notes that sets well with a little bit of guava, papaya and grapefruit. Not too many resinous hops to the front, there is some in the background. The flavor as the nose tells. Tropical fruits to the front with nice dose of C hops. Grapefruit/oranges, papaya and resinous bitter finishes the beer dry. More citric fruits in the aftertaste. This has a big malt body. The feel on the brew is medium light par carbonation.

Overall: This beer is good. There is a big bold malt body to it that is balanced by the dry bitter finish. I would drink it again down the road. This gets an A-, this brew is worthy!

    Cheers NBSers!

What does an infected beer taste like? Just the word makes me want to dry heave. Maybe there's no uniform way to describe it? Your body just knows it's wrong on a biological level and says get this out of your system....I've never had one and hope I never do LOL

    New German Pilsner Sunday

    Greetings NBS,

Looks like another fine day of beer sampling here on BA. Southern CT offered up a glorious, mild Spring day which we happily enjoyed .

This was one of those busy weekends where you could really use one more day before the work week.

My NB is from the Victory summer variety pack which offers some awesome brews.

I really enjoy the simple excellence of this style.

Hope everyone has a good week.

In my very limited experience, each infected beer I have had has shared the following characteristics:
    -Remarkably thin body
    -Extremely fizzy head
-Tons of sourness and heat, specifically in the back of the throat

Twice it's been with a BA imperial stout; I get the feeling that breweries are rushing into barrel aging, without necessarily putting forth the time and effort (and quality control) to ensure that a great product has been made. Look at BCBS: wonderful, consistent beer, and the standard-bearer for the style. I've yet to hear of an infected BCBS, despite the relatively-high quantity they put out every year.

But you're right: there's probably no uniform way to describe it (maybe other than "sour"). It's just...off. Wrong. An affront to mankind.

The mixed 12 includes Summer Love, Whirlwind Wit, a session IPA and this pilsner. Not a stinker in there- I recommend.

After a hot and muggy day in the Deep South and a brief rain shower, we fired up the grill. Made some cheeseburgers with grilled squash, eggplant, and a green salad.

Tonight's new beer was Goose Island's The Ogden. I'm a fairly big fan of the style, and had fairly high hopes. I poured it just a few minutes out of the fridge, and it was a bit sour and salty at first which was confusing. Fortunately, it got much better as it warmed. In the end, this is a solid Tripel. Maybe not my all time favorite, but nice none the less.
