Waiting to dive into Beer Camp, but still managed something new for NBS. The heather really pops in this, feel like goat munching on flowers.

Starting my Sunday with something new from Evil Twin, Nomader Weisse. I enjoy Justin Blabaer more, but this is still an enjoyable beer.

    3.83/5 rDev +0.5%
    look: 4 | smell: 3.25 | taste: 4 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 4

12 oz can poured into a flute

A- A hazy golden straw color with a three finger white head.

S- Tart, lacto, some wheat, bready malts, underwhelming.

T- Much better than the nose, tart lemon, some wheat and pale malts, touch of funk, some lacto in the finish.

M- Pretty smooth, crisp, light body.

O- Not the best Berliner I have tried, but I am very happy that I was able to pick this up. Nose is fairly weak, but the taste is not.

    Greetings, fellow NBSers,
It's well on the way to hitting the low to mid 90s in the capital of the Glorious Republic of Spokanistan. I volunteered to work what has turned out to be a double shift at work, so I won't be home until well after midnight. I probably won't be into drinking a new beer and reviewing it by then, but I will include for anyone's reading pleasure the (sort of) new beer I had last night - Selkirk Abbey's Guilt:

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/28798/109761/?ba=woemad

I actually had a sample at a local bar back in the spring and thought it was kind of ho-hum. Now that I've had a bottle and been able to properly drink it, I'm much more happy with it, and hope it becomes a regular in their line up.

    Cheers!

After being severely disappointed with Great Divide's Yeti a couple weeks ago, I decided to give the oak-aged, chocolate-and-cayenne big brother a try.

Great Divide Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti

Yum! Beautiful, beautiful beer. The aroma is very nice, but slightly reminiscent of the stale Yeti I had before, so in a way, it was a little off-putting. The flavor, however, did not disappoint. Roasted barley and chocolate are the dominant flavors, by a mile, but there is a nice subtle back-end heat (from cayenne pepper, I later found), and the oak imparts a slight vanilla and charred wood flavor. Not a significant factor, but nice.

The mouthfeel is thick, completely hides the 9.5% ABV, and has a long, sticky finish. Very nice beer.

    4.01 / -5%

Apparently, "very nice" and "outstanding" still correlate to a -rDev. I guess I'm just not seeing the amazitude* of this beer at the height of its powers.

    Cheers, NBSers!

*Yes, I made up that word.

Taking advantage of the Chicago Lagunitas distro. Sucks is new for me today. Surprisingly smooth for an 8% DIPA and well balanced. Usually I'm sharing a 32 oz bottle, but this one's all for me!

    Cheers!

Good morning intrepid voyagers of liquid pleasure. I'm having a rare per 12 o'clock beer while watching the baseball HOF ceremonies.

    ALPINE BEER COMPANY
    PURE HOPPINESS

8.0 alcohol, IBU's unspecified, double IPA. I purchased this at the brewery on 7-16.

Golden in color, about 1" of head. The smell is piney, fresh hops. It portends what is to come.

Taste is pine, hops, some tropical fruit, and a nice malt backbone to hold things together. Alcohol is hidden well here. Weedy, herbal, but good balance. A Enjoy By light if you will.

Mouthfeel, medium-light with average carbonation. This bottle is still damn fresh so I imagine it was bottled right before I bought it.

In summary, another winner from the little brewery that can in Alpine, CA.

    Howdy NBSers!

Earlier this week, I got a new job! Over the last week, I've been splurging. One of the expensive purchases is a beer called Lambickx, which is an unblended lambic that is $25 a bottle. The bottle I have says it was brewed in 2010-2011, and it was bottled in 2012. It has been a while since I've had a lambic of any sort, and this is going to be my first unblended lambic. Now that I'm finishing off the bomber, here's my thoughts:

Pours a hazy gold color with no head on it and no visible carbonation. The aroma is of pineapple, lemon zest, vinegar, and quite a bit of tartness. Taste is tart and musty, leaving the sweet fruitiness from the nose behind. Aftertaste is sour with some lemon zest up front and a bit of wood and tobacco on the back of the tongue, and the taste lingers for a while (especially the sourness). Mouthfeel is light, the carbonation is minimal, making for a beer that slides down the gullet quite easily.

Overall, I'm a fan. I have no reference as to how good this is compared to other unblended lambics, but I think this is quite comparable to some of the gueuzes I've had and enjoyed. If you have the cash, and a reason to celebrate, I'd recommend this.

Maria, I love the Elmore James selection! I think with my tune for the week, I'll stick with the blues...

Now I'm off to Wicker Park to see Jeff the Brotherhood.
    Have a great week everybody!
    Cheers!

    New Holland Wheatwine Sunday

I have had a pretty good run of quality new beers the last handful of Sundays. Today the streak continues. Enjoying this one from the friendly confines of my living room since I am in the middle of this:
Tornado watch till this evening. Based on the amount of rain the sky is puking out right now, I think this will take care of that humidity issue. On to the beer.
A very dark amber with a wine look to it. Smells like caramel, toffee, vanilla, and a hint of bourbon. A lot more bourbon in the taste, but nowhere near overpowering. Also get some vanilla, toffee, caramel, maybe honey. Not too sweet, but I think it does finish a hair bitter. While it defiantly has english barleywine characteristics, it also drinks a lot like a barrel aged scotch ale with the rich malt. It doesn't scream 12% by any means, but still a sipper. 4.0 overall. http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/335/14954/?ba=WesMantooth I will be grabbing more of this one. Look me up if you want any. New Holland has to live in the shadows of Founder's and Bell's, but every beer I have had is very, very good. Cheers to @utopiajane for exercising one of her demons. Going to suffer through another Cincinnati Reds game and then spend 45 minutes looking for something to watch on Netflix before going back to the cable box to watch some movie I have seen 50 times that I have on DVD but am not invested enough in to go through that process. I leave you with this. Happy Sunday.

the grey wulf wins photo of the day award ... wow!

BAs are pouring Parabolas and quads and big ol' DIPAs ... meanwhile, all I got (is a rock) is this blonde ale:

OK, so it's not *just* a blonde ale. In fact, it's really a milk blonde ale, because the honey and milk sugar is not a misprint:

And the "breakfast" is appropriate ... this thing tastes like a bowl of cereal with beer poured in. It's a full grain bomb with loads of sweetness.

With all of that stuff added, it's murky to the point of looking like a Belgian tripel ... loads of sediment, especially if you pour the last of the last few drops from the can.

I gave it a weird 4.14 rating. Normally my taste and overall numbers tend to be identical, but here the taste is so much better than the rest of the beer, that ... well ... do these numbers ever make any sense?

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/31272/94053/?ba=Premo88

Martin House instantly became a favorite last Saturday when I got to visit the brewery. Happening scene ... and a fantastic spot with a cool view of the Trinity and downtown Fort Worth. If you're in the Metroplex area with some time to kill on a Saturday, I recommend checking it out. You'll wait in line for a few minutes getting your beers, but their gose is salty yummy and their imperial red will get you hop-heads hoppin'. And they'll likely have some music going:

Hope y'all are enjoying your Sundays ... cheers!

Boring, rainy day here in central mass. Passing the time with the SVU marathon and Backlash Resurrection Coffee Imperial Stout.

This beer is an absolute monster. Tons of rich chocolate and coffee. Smooth as can be, and a really hidden 9.5% abv.

    Another winner from Backlash.

    Greetings NBSers!

I am home from another weekend of touring colleges in SEPA, as well as an overnight stay at my sister's in Bethlehem. I managed to score a case of a beer I have been looking for this summer: the Straub Summer Variety Pack, featuring their 1872 Lager (Classic American Pils). Thankfully there's plenty of summer left to enjoy all of those seasonal brews. But since they are not cold right now, and I do feel like a beer right now, I'm having another goodie-

    Furst Wallerstein Zwickel-
    [IMG]
This is a really nice example of the style- lots of doughy and bready malt, for sure, but it also lets the hops show through, so it's got a little zip in its step. The mid-palate is where the malt and spicy hops give way to a gentle and tasty orange marmalade fruitiness, before giving way to a touch of grassy hops and yeasty finish. Impeccable balance and harmony of flavors, too. I can't say I've had very many Zwickels, but this is by far the best of the lot- go out and get some now!

Let's get things going with Captain Sensible and the boys-

    Happy Sunday!

    Hello all!

New to me this Sunday is Victory Wild Devil. A Belgian IPA - not my favorite style, with th huge exception of Bitter Monk, which is one of my favorite beers.

Wild Devil has a burst of hops up front, followed by some Brett funk and a big dose of
a spice I can't quite place. At the end, it is the spice that pedominates.

Some beers I love or not after one serving, while others I like to try again some other day before making up my mind. Wild Devil is the latter. Complex notes going on, and I'd like to try another someday if I run across it again.

Don't have a music link for this one, but will note I sipped it while re-reading G's The Deserted Village.
