The Big Muddy Imperial Stout...quite a name. Quite misleading as well.

I saw this at Collins Midwest Liquor in Tulsa - once again my goto store in that city. I'll admit, the name turned me on so I had to have it. I was a bit hesitant because I could see through the bottle that it looked kinda thin. Not what I like in a stout, but I figured, ahh...wtf.

My hunch was correct. Muddy pours a very thin and anemic (slightly darker than cola) black/brown allowing some light through at the bottom taper of a pint glass. A single finger of mocha head snaps and pops its way to nothing in seconds flat. Lace scores a big goose egg for this latest Goose Island concoction.

Muddy brings nutty chocolate cookies, vanilla, simmered dark fruit, and a nice hint of smoke to the nose. Quite appealing.

Flavor would be great had it followed the nose. Instead, it goes off it's own way like a Fleetwood Mac tune. Black liquorice, plum pudding, bitter cocoa, and a vinous tangy aftershock take it in a direction that leaves the tongue uninspired and somewhat disappointed.

Feel is very thin for a "stout." Wait, it's called "The Muddy." That's just wrong. Carbonation is fizzy and prickly - also not appreciated in a stout as far as my taste is concerned.

So going by the little combo guitar amp on the label I'm sure somebody with some novice guitar knowledge came up with this name and idea. FYI, "muddy" describes a guitar sound usually associated with the blues, as in Mississippi Delta blues - dark, murky, and broken. Overall I feel a bit cheated. I mean, this is called "The Muddy." That implies a thick-ass sticky palate-glazing brew. I don't get it. I was all ready for hot fudge sundae beer. I hereby rename this beer, "Deceiver."

    Enjoy good beer!

The chiefs are back on top now. Popped this one open since I'm on a dark beer kick. Thanks to @youbrewidrink for gifting this to me. You can smell the chocolate in this brew. I really don't taste the coconut or vanilla, just the chocolate. Overall decent brew from VT.

Good weekend all, hope everyone is ready to rake leaves, watch football, cook on the grill etc.
In WMass it is a beautiful Sunday.
Enjoyed this from Enlightenment and Kissemeyer. I so enjoy the work of Anders and the efforts to keep
    craft brewing (brewers) creative.
    Overall 3.78

Poured from bottle into a modified tulip glass.
A - Gentle lacing caps out into a beautiful white froth. Clear hay color, summer light shines through.
S - Young lemongrass, ginger, and bright spring tree blossom, lots of delight in the nose.
T - Surprisingly, jumps away from the nose, those lemon notes lead you off into a garden of
flavors. The lead is fresh herbs, citrus and faint hints of mint.
F - The balance shines here, carbonation is cleansing, and bright. The body is straight down the middle
    well done indeed.
O - This is the second "version" I have enjoyed, each unique. That said the work Anders Kissemeyer
is putting forth needs to be recognized, and sought out.
    Cheers all

Fiddlehead has really stepped it up. Hodad is the one put them on my radar, so drinkable for a porter, so full of bright taste, just the right balance of added flavors, just the right mouth to showcase them.

I had a 2013 bottle of Firestone Walker DDBA in the fridge for today's NBS, but I've been fighting a bit of a chest cold this weekend, so I opted for something a bit lighter. For some reason, I've never gotten around to trying Westbrook's IPA even though it's readily available in these parts. Today seemed like a good day to give it a go.

All things considered, this is a well executed basic IPA. Nice citrus aroma, and plenty of hop punch. I might need to add this as a regular purchase.

As another NBS draws to a crepuscular close I will share one more with my Faro Family and Kölsch Kin:

    Wow. Just wow. And golly.
This reminds me of almonds, wheat berries and golden raisins. The mouthfeel is amazing and pillow-y. This beer almost reminds me of marzipan. This one really knocked my socks off. I would drink it in a box and I would drink it with a fox...
    Cheers!

    Greetings All:

I'm checking out this predictably pedestrian Farmhouse Red Ale from Blue Moon.

It's not bad, but call it what you will it's an average amber. I do kind of like some the art work on the labels and TV commercials, but I'm no judge of art. A nice fall brew, but I doubt it will see the inside of my DBF again.

Gorgeous autumn weekend here in the Columbia Basin. Blue skies with some wispy high clouds and temps in the upper 70's. It was a fall vehicle maintenance weekend or golf would have certainly been on the event calendar. Maybe the weather holds out for another week?

    Until then,

    Happy Trails!

I have another new beer this Sunday, courtesy of my brother, who got it from an old friend who lives in N. Carolina. I'm going into this one not knowing too much about it beyond the mention of brett on the label-
    [IMG]
    Wicked Weed Serenity-
First off, it's such a beautiful bright and clear golden ale. Somehow that cheery look is impacting the aroma and palate- the overall feel of this beer has a nicely bright undercurrent. Oh, the earthy brett is there, allright- so is lots of hay, oak, white grape- but it all coexists with a healthy dose of lemon peel that really brightens the mood. Very well put together and enjoyable: A-

My Uncle came up from Winter Park this weekend. He just came up to get away, so most of it was watching the playoffs or playing cards while we talked.

I watched the Orioles sweep the Detroit Tigers to move on to the ALCS (the first time since 1997). So, figured I had to open something up. I'd put a bunch of stuff in the fridge, but the only 12 oz. bottles that were appropriate were Beer Geek Vanilla Shake and 2013 BCBS. I didn't feel like rating/reviewing something; so, I figured I would go with some aged BCBS. This is my first time having non-fresh BCBS, but I still got 12 bottles left. Still wondering if I'm going to pick some up this year (maybe to trade with or use as extras).

This is what I had to say on Untappd:

After a weekend of brewing, pulled this one from the fridge. Had a year on it, but I can only claim being responsible for about a third of that.

Wonderful if annoying pour (little effervescent). The nose and taste are about the same, obvious Belgian notes, with dark fruits, cola, and some lemon notes. I really enjoyed the flavors, and liked that there was some carbonation, but it was a tad strong. Not sure if the year helped or hurt (it is highly rated on this site), but I'd grab it again to find out.

Greetings NBSer's. A great sports weekend for me as my teams (Green Bay Packers and Baltimore Orioles) took home big wins, minus the Badgers, and it looks like my Fantasy Football team is going to win to boot!

Now back to the beverages...lots of new beers were enjoyed during the Oktoberfest celebrations and I decided to end my Marathon of Marzens with this interesting brew
    [IMG]
My first Rauchbier and I'd have to say it is definitely an acquired taste; mine falling in line with the acquired few. Huge smoked salmon like smells and flavors (who woulda thought?). Enough of a sweet malt presence and citrus hop bitterness to keep all the smoke in check. The body and mouthfeel are right in pair with the Oktoberfest style. Crisp, clean, and flavorful. A nice beer that I will seek out again from time to time, especially with a dinner of cured meat and potatoes.

This beer just screams Old School. I can picture sitting back by the fire pit sipping on this while roasting the malts for the next batch.

    Happy NBS!

    Prost!

I don't know if you caught wind of my previous post about that beer (months ago). I'd take a fresh HoDad over a fresh Heady any day! Real Talk.

I did, and you were right on the money. I am a Heady fanatic, can't say I would go for a Hodad if I had both cans in front of me, but I can say I wish I had a Hodad or a Second Fiddle in front of me right now
