I'll add that @Lehighace06 has been very gracious in holding my hand is getting this thing up, and an example of that is his generous offer here. I will also back up any non-receivers. Since most of the NBS crew are familiar with each other, I'm not too worried about it. I'd really like to get a few folks who haven't gotten involved in sending beer into this, and we'll make it as comfortable for them as possible.

Good afternoon New BSers! The BIF sounds interesting - sign me up if possible. The bucolic backwoods here in western PA is pretty much a beer desert, but I've been known to travel and transport.

Today's NBS offering is something I picked up in NM last spring - I had to look it up to figure out what "Fernet" was.

The head was over the lip but, by the time I got the camera set up and focused, the liquid had raised and the head dropped. This sucker is bottle conditioned - the cork blew through the partially opened cage, hit the ceiling, and bounced off my nekkid head. Next bottle-conditioned time I wear my steel pot.

Actually a pretty decent porter - was able to pick up some of the fernet favors but WTF do dandelion root or bitter aloe taste/smell like? The ginger and licorice come through as does the toasted malt. No peppermint. Kind of nice in a herbal/mediciney sort of way.

To this point, I'm more than happy to speak with you if you're uncomfortable with any aspect of shipping beer. I'm not the most prolific trader, nor do I tend to deal in walezbro, but I've sent out 50+ boxes in the last year so I've got a pretty decent handle on the process. Feel free to tag me in this thread or BM me, but again keep in mind that I'm not likely to see your post if I'm not tagged or quoted.

edit: and thank you @beertunes for your kind words

    Greetings, fellow NBSers,
Mid-30s in the largest city between Boise and Calgary (was in a mostly north-south mood today) and damp. The temperature is now pretty much normal for this time of year, but it was over 50 earlier this week. Yesterday my alma mater went down in defeat in the FCS quarterfinal. Not a blow-out, but Illinois St. just outplayed them on both sides of the ball. Still, it was a great season.

I've been a little remiss in my winter beer responsibilities, so here's one from a brewery that much ink (or whatever the internet equivalent) has been spilt over their recent acquisition by a certain international brewing behemoth. I won't say I'll swear off any of their future beers, as I believe if a beer's good and they haven't actively pissed me off, there's no reason to swear off something I would like to consume:

Somewhere between meh and WTF? There's a weird, almost Belgiany slightly sour cherry thing partway through that is intriguing but seems accidental, then some mineral notes that don't exactly ruin things but definitely detracts. I've only had a couple of other beers from this brewery, one pretty good, one just odd (but it was meant to be odd), so I'm not ready to write them off, but this doesn't exactly help their cause.

I hope everyone is doing very well on this pleasant Sunday. With time running low to get Christmas cards in the mail with family portraits in them, my wife scheduled the annual picture circus for this afternoon. This is why I will have only one beer this afternoon, but very much necessary in order to take an edge off my normal grumpiness and lack of patience with the whole ordeal. As an added bonus, my single beer will serve as an excuse for me not driving, as I've really had it with holiday traffic and desperately need a break from that blood pressure trigger as well!

So my choice on a day where I need the beer equivalent of comfort food is the Schneider Weisse Aventinus Tap 6. Though I haven't had it before, I know what's in store.

Pours a deep dark coppery brown translucent beauty with an equally impressive, decently retained light creme colored head with little lacing. Bananas dominate the nose and taste up until the clove washes over the tongue. Finishes with a bit of cloying sweetness and a touch of astringency. Indeed I enjoy my comfort beverage!

I may stop by later, but chances are I may have earned a 2012 BCBS after picture time. And that one I can't call new!

    Cheers!

    Hello, people...

My beer store got in a bunch of good shit this week.
Among the new, Humboldt Brewing. I grabbed a bottle of their DIPA, 500 BC.

I am a big DIPA fan - any IPA from about 7% abv-or-so is in contention...

    New Old Ale Sunday

    Greeting New Beer Sunday contributor's.
It's good to be back in our weekly ritual. SCMN is enjoying some "seasonally" warm weather, but it come with moisture and dense cloudy skies and, for me then, gloom. I can take it for awhile, but at some point I need a good shot of sun. Not complaining, just saying. Nonetheless, at this time of year a guy can get distracted by all sorts of family and celebratory activities to distract aplenty.
I approach NBS today with a Vintage Ale that most are familiar and most should be able to get. Three years old it is, and that seems to have impacted the aroma in a deleterious way (taking on some oxidation), but the flavor is good and the feel is very smooth. I recommend this for those searching for a real nice old ale.

Happy New Berliner Weiss Sunday! And a busy one it is for me. Damn, but it's chilly out, too, so any work in the garage will have to wait, but there's a basement to be cleaned and that's where I'm headed after this. Next week we're having a Hanukkah Party, so it's got to be done, and I never seem to be able to deal with that sort of thing after work.

Meanwhile, it's lunch break time. Some left over mu shoo beef will do nicely, and what's that accompanying it? It's Bayerischer Banhof Berliner Style Weiss-
    [IMG]
After a decanted pour, the aroma is dominated by a white wine character (more Vouvray than Chardonnay) and crackers, while in the background there are green apple, lemon peel and white peppercorns. The palate is more dry than tart, although there is a pleasing dollop of sourness as well. The bready/crackery flavors take over for a while, but then that white wine and even a bit if hay come on for the finish.

Midway through the glass I begin eating, and I gotta say, this delicate little beer stands up to all of that crazy sweet/sour/earthy food incredibly well. If anything, the tartness becomes a bit bolder, while the flavors don't back down an inch. I can see why this style of beer has been referred to as the Champagne of the North, because that's exactly how it's coming across now. Absolutely fantastic! Points docked for being slight on the sourness, but overall a very enjoyable A- (4.125)

"What would I do that was different,
unless it was Champagne with you."

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday!

Happy NBS BA's. As I make pot roast on this cool damp Pittsburgh day and watch the steelers beat up on the Falcons (yay), I decided I would pop open two beers. A Harpoon Chocolate Stout for the pot roast and a Terrapin Wake n Bake, which I have never ever had. Here is the pour

This beer gets a lot of love so I was excited to try it. Pours black, almost opaque, with a quarter inch of quickly dissipating coffee cream head coming from a faily aggressive pour. The smell is coffee, coffee, coffee. Some hints of cocoa and licorice, but predominantly coffee. Silky mouthfeel with only slight carbonation which I found very enjoyable. The taste starts with black coffee then hints of milk chocolate and I would say molasses. The beer finishes a bit astringent with burnt coffee flavor.

Overall, I enjoyed the beer but did not find it to be in the same class as FBS. However, there is no denying that this is a very well made brew. I am going to let the remaining bottles age a little bit. I am guessing the coffee will mellow and the chocolate will become more pronounced leading to a more balanced, enjoyable brew ( to me).

I mentioned the Harpoon Chocolate Stout before of which I used 10oz or so in the pot roast. The remaining 2oz. I mixed in with the 2oz or so of Wake n Bake that I had left. Ohhhh, that was tasty. More chocolate to balance the coffee. I think that mix may be a dessert tonight.

    Have a great day all!

This one is not Bourbon Barrel Aged but for the 3rd week in a row an Imperial Stout. Long Trail Imperial Stout, This brew seems to a bit thin for an Imperial Stout but is a fine beer in any case. A lot going on here, toffee, roasted malt, a touch of smoke and a nice bitter after taste. 8.8 abv. but very drinkable well worth looking for.

I'm enjoying here a can of Evil Twin "Hipster Ale" -- which I found nicely hoppy with good caramel contour to level against the bitter. For a canned beer it held flavor well; my first time trying any beer from this brewery and I appreciated the geometric design as well, sort of retro with the color scheme and font.
So this was actually last night; my beau and I had just finished running in the Tacky Lights 6K nearly tripping over ourselves in almost-full darkness through neighborhoods whose house & yards were all dec'd out with lit-up holiday bling. The beer offering at this race was Leinenkugel Vanilla Porter and after one of those we decided to limp on in pursuit of a better watering hole. In his goblet is Opal Saison by Firestone Walker - another new one to both of us, I had a sip and liked the crisp herbal emphasis but preferred my hoppier ale. Cheers and I hope I'm not cheating by entering this which was technically on Saturday -- I'd mentioned here last week I was preparing for this run and wanted to follow up~
    [IMG]
Oh and my costume outfit was a thrift-store found chenille sweater with chickens embroidered -- get it, "Chicken Run"? -- but for Xmas theme I had knitted little red & green scarves on to some of the hens. It was too dark out there to really show it off; good thing tackiness is so "hip" with the holidays now or I wouldn't be sure what to use it for next.

Hello and Howdy to you all. Another gray day in central OK, but not cold or chilly at all. T shirt weather. Last night, I had a Samuel Adams Merry Christmas for the first time. It is a wheat beer. I detected hints of cinnamon and nutmeg, along with some sort of pumpkin flavor. I drank it straight from the bottle, so I can't really comment about lacing, head or color. It was a nice surprise, though. A little unusual. It was like a nice pie. Almost like a sweet potato pie. This is pretty much all I can say about it.

I had this last night and felt the same way. Where was the carbonation.? Almost flat. Very little rum flavor. Eh, I dumped it.

Anybody recall the member who was always proclaiming the virtues of Vitus? He or she is a wise person.

It's an unseasonably warm day in West MI. Gray skies and a gentle mist make it feel more pre-Halloween than pre-Christmas. Nonetheless, it was a good morning to take my boys to a birthday party, throw around the football, and drink a new beer.

Today's is a real winner. TBH, I can't believe this is new to me. I've been missing out!

On the BIF front, I have a couple of successful trades under my belt, but I've promised my wife a little time off. If it's a success, maybe I could get in on one down the road.

Welcome to NBS. We are different than WBAYDN, we talk about our beer, what we like, what we don't, what are the features that we notice. Doesn't have to be a formal review, although many of us do formally review the beers we post, just a description of your beer that tells a story. Feel free to tell a little about yourself too.

What were the results of the side by side, and what did you taste about those beers?
