You were close enough. Azalea. I have 3 different size varieties here and every shade between and including solid red to solid white. They make for some great spring beer backdrops don't they?

Sorry, this is the other local guy. Billy Crash Craddock maybe ought to remain dormant. Mike Cross is great!

This has a very nice look to it. Lacing exists from what was previously a fine cream colored head, but now receded to a rim of foam and aforementioned gentle lacing. Nose is a touch muted, but what I can detect is a touch biscuity and maybe a tad nutty. Taste comes punching through with an immediate bitterness that gives way to that nutty thing that I could smell, hints of something spicy and just a faint berry presence. On the otherwise, crisp finish, we have just a hint of tart mixed into the final "eff you" attitude of bitterness. Very complex without being too much of a thinker. Haven't had it? Do yourself a solid and give it a whirl.

Glad you are enjoying it, a favorite around here for sure.

They also do a cognac barrel aged version called Illudium which is also nice...

    Cheers!

    On to another new brew.

Southampton Biere De Mars - Southampton Publick House

Southampton Publick House - Biere de Mars
    by imbibehour, on Flickr

    ---------------------------------

Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass.

Solid and somewhat opaque rust colored brown, with perhaps an orange tinge to it. A good appearance of middle carbonation through a thick body, but also some very fine micro line rising on the sides. Head is tiny, barely a finger but manage a controlled and solid puck that keeps getting repopulate. Creamy top, off white, and a solid looking garde.

Aroma doesn't seem to hint so much at big farmhouse notes, but a sense of almost faint lambic fruit acid quality, and sourdough bread comes off. Obvious biscuit and cookie like notes on the bouquet, which match with a slight sour twinge nicely on the beer. Seems subdued, but nice.

Palate seems on first sip quite neutral. Not much obvious until the final swallow seems to be complete. Decent malt depth, a good coating through the palate but manages to emphasize cookie caramel than farmhouse. Mild biscuity finish coupled with just a hinting bit of pepper, with a great aromatic almost smoke like aftertaste. Sweet caramel just a touch as well, but the sweetness definitely seems to standout above anything else.

A decent brew but seems to lack obvious large yeast and noticeable properties that seem to make the style so distinct. A very subtle garde but also real easy drinking because of that.

    look: 4 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.5 | BA generated score: 3.64

    Onward!

I swear I paid only €2 Euros and change for a 500ml, (which apparently is expensive for German brews) at a simple corner donner kabob spot, but they weren't at the Rewe, and I am sure these will be considerably more US $ coin than that...

    if they are there

One of my favorite memories was actually I first arrived and saw the beer not even a block from the apartment I was staying at in Mitte. Rows and rows of it, not going anywhere (I also discovered some [not all] other stores nearby had it too). Then the next day during a break in the afternoon I went in there to buy some. I forked over some coin and the guy asks me...

    Open?

You mean... I can drink this outside here?!?!? like on the street?!? and it was obvious within less than 24 hours, public beer drinking in hand around Berlin was a real common thing to do, like just having a cigarette.

This my new one for today. I picked this up a few weeks ago. Bought 3 ....1 to drink and 2 to age. I was pretty impressed with this one. Not my favorite style but the bourbon was not too prevalent. All in all everything you would want from a barrel aged stout. Rich and flavorful with lots of chocolate.

For tonight I got a sixer of the Chainbraker White IPA from Deschutes Brewery. Wanted to have something new for The Walking Dead season finale. Can't wait to try it out.

I don't know if they're referencing Nebuchadnezzar I or II, or if they're gettin' all Biblical or whatever...

But this is a damn fine DIPA... runs toward the IPA end of the DIPA spectrum - crisp and tight, lean with lots of citrus and fruit; pine and resin run beneath, alongside fresh grain impressions; bittering is strong, way more hop than malt character...

Therion (also from Sweden) is as esoteric as it gets...

Therion is HUGE in Mexico, hence the subtitles :sunglasses:

So the weather in NW Indiana hasn't decide that it's spring yet. It broke 40 for the first time all week yesterday and I figured I would make a trip to a different store than I usually go to. Lo and behold the had a case of cherry hunter sitting in the fridge! It was a successful trip. But I have had the cherry hunter before, so onto something new from another Indiana brewery.

    Black Beerd from Burn'em Brewing
    [IMG]

    A Vanilla Hazelnut Black Ale

Pour is dark with a rich mocha, espresso-with-cream colored head. The head lingers too.

Smell is fairly light. Vanilla is present, but I'm not getting the hazelnut. The beer might be too cold, so I'll let it warm. Some oak scents present from the bourbon soaked vanilla beans. Not to heavy on the nose, but it also has a nice roasty quality.

Taste is oak and vanilla upfront. The beer thins out a bit in the middle, but finishes with a nice, roasty, nutty flavor. Lingering on the palate is a bit of a sweet, bourbony flavor.

At first I thought the mouthfeel was thin, but upon second (and third, and fourth...) swig, I am reexamining that position. It's actually got this nice creamy quality, but maintains a high drinkability.

Overall another solid offering from the guys up in Michigan City.

    Happy Sunday!

I saw far more drinking than smoking... although certainly more than in the United States when it comes to smoking as Europe generally seems to be. But yup wasn't gonna turn me into a smoker anytime soon

Happy NBS! Perfect beer for a spring Sunday early afternoon. Smuttynose Hayseed, a very light saison/farmhouse beer. Very pale golden color with that typical Belgian yeast smell. Refreshing taste. Lightly spicy. Surprisingly smooth mouthfeel for such a light beer. I'll probably buy more of these for a nice change of pace light beer when I don't want a session IPA. Cheers!

Wow a perfect 5. I'll admit after drinking a 6 pack my score kept inching up. It is a pretty awesome beer.
