Both Allagash and Maine Beer are open on Sundays, and are right outside of Portland.

Not just a new beer but a new brewery a well respected one at that.
Red Wheelbarrow Ale from the Maine Beer Company bottled on 04/28/15
Wow this is one of the best looking beers I have ever laid eyes on. Beautiful ruby red color and a head thick enough to shave with. It tastes almost as good. Maine calls this a hoppy red ale. It's hoppy but balanced not sweet just off dry. Well done, Maine brewing lives up to it's hype.
This is why it's good to support small local retailers. They got one case of this and saved one for me, as they do with anything hard to get.

This brewery is headquartered in Maryland but this bottle is brewed at Two Roads Brewery in Stratford, Connecticut. Stillwater Artisanal Surround. A 10% Oak barrel aged Imperial wheat stout. Everything about it was subtle and you would never know it was 10%. Booze subdued.

Coco Loco - NoDa Brewing Company

NoDa Brewing Co. - Coco Loco Porter
    by imbibehour, on Flickr

    -------------------

Poured from the can into a nonic pint glass.

Thick light and fluffy head, almost styrofoam looking with a thick chunk of nearly four fingers, very light tan almost vanilla yellow in color with a big cascading formation while pouring. Sits on top with hardly a budge to move, and classic deep walnut brown and red highlight edges for the body color. Real decent looking porter.

Huge husky nose. Ripping dark grains, and thick chocolate and cocoa dark powder in them mix. Hints also just a little bit of coffee like bean, with a steamy heat and character that is real mouth watering. Big hits of dried cocoa all over, and just a faint sweetness that comes out more airy than water milky thick. Excellent aroma.

What an aftertaste on this beer. Mid palate fills with a sort of lactose mild sweet character, light in body with just enough roast to cut through the sweetness. The finish just explodes in ripping dark husky grains. Roast character just builds and builds on the swallow, hitting large notes of char, then tobacco, and then a large dry carbon bitterness. Mild sweetness comes in at first, and then builds a very controllable dark chocolate bitter seed angle real wonderfully. Some milky cream sweetness is just barely poking out, but getting nicely slammed down by this big roast character.

Excellent cocoa porter. Even without much of a coconut sensation.

    look: 4.25 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.5 | BA Score : 4.44

THese are some great beers so far from NoDa... very impressed so far!

Quick update- the last third of the can is where the Cascade hops took control. It went from fruity to that heavy, earthy evergreen quality similar to what you find in Bigfoot. It almost reminded me of Columbus hops, actually. That was a nice surprise, and it was pretty cool seeing another facet in the beer before the first can was done.

Good Afternoon NBSers! Happy Mothers Day to all the moms. They get up and take care of their families everyday with few rewards but the love given back to them by those they nurture. Many times this is the hardest "job" in the world yet they all seem to take to it naturally. I lost my wonderful angel of a mother at too young an age. Simply said: love your mom, they are the best!
Today's brew is actually New Canned Beer Sunday for me. I had a 4 ounce pour of this at the brewery and was simply blown away. So I pop this beauty in honor of the Moms....let's see if it stacks up to the draft.
Bissell Brothers Brewery Lux Rye Ale.
Pours a orange hue with an off white head that hangs for a minute and dissipates to a thin cap. There are a few grains floating but liquid is fairly clear.
What a bouquet the minute top was popped! Pine, red grapefruit, mango, orange and blossoms and some dankness. Very aromatic, lovely.
Grapefruit, pine, weed, mango, cat pee dankness and peppery rye. Nicely bitter. Flavor lasts quite a long time. Yum.
Tiny bubble carb. Long dry peppery finish. Refreshing.
BBB is on their game right now. The champs at high, quality flavor packed low ABV brews. This one weighs in at 5.1 percent and believe me you wouldn't know it unless you read the label. I would call this a New England style Rye IPA. The aroma on this beer alone sets a new standard for low ABV brews. Yes I'm looking forward to more Swish. But I'm loving these other offerings. In fact I'm having another.......Cheers. Enjoy the rest of this beautiful Mothers Day.
And as always Thanks for Listening![IMG] [IMG]

On to the next one. ...

We have Riot Rye from Monocracy.

Looks very nice, as you can see. Nose is sweet, malty and biscuity with a tiny bit of fruity perhaps?

Tastes like a ton of caramel with a pleasant nondescript bitterness before a remarkably dry finish. I say "ok" to this.

Happy Mother's Day to all the mums out there.

It's a little dreary in West MI, but that didn't stop me from whipping up some crepes with the morning coffee, making a run to Goodwill, and hanging out with the family all day.

Took some time for a tasty brew before I fire up the grill and potentially pop the top on another NBS.

12oz. Bottle from Copper Vine (batch 14128 packaged 04/03/15) poured into a Stone IRS snifter.
A- 1 finger of off white head settles into a light film. The deep, amber body is slightly hazy and sports moderate carbonation. A little sediment is suspended in the body. Decent stick left on the glass.
S- Sweet and complex. Lots of caramel. Leafy, tobacco-like, and spicy hops. Faint, gentle alcohol. Hints of stone fruit with a little raisin aroma.
T- Much as aroma suggests. Warm and inviting. Caramel and brown sugar malts. Leafy, spicy hops. Sweeter finish somehow stays dry and rather clean. A little woody flavor may be helping there.
M- Full body is quite viscus with moderate carbonation that tries to keep up. Gentle, warm alcohol. A little bite from the spicy side of the hops.
O- A great example of the style. An excellent combination of bold flavor, big malts kept in check with generous, fresh hops. This one spent a couple weeks in the cellar and is drinking quite nicely. Perfect on this rainy afternoon.

Did Saturn just get released? I've seen a lot of people drinking it recently but haven't seen it locally, to date.

Happy Mother’s Day New Beer Sunday (5/10/15)

Well wishes to all the Mom’s and Cheers to my fellow BA’s.

Yesterday was just an incredibly beautiful sunny day. Today it’s stormy, cloudy and wet which is not fitting weather to LUV on my Ma. No matter it is nice to spend time with her.

I typically do not go to the Beer Store to buy a specific Brew unless it’s a Seasonal Release (Nugget Nectar, Chillwave, Hop Ju Ju, Hopslam). So my typical MO is to walk up and down the aisles looking for something to speak to me. I often pick up the same bottle of beer several times and then put it back as I can’t make up my mind. Flying Dog Gonzo is probably the one beer I’ve done this with the most. It is appropriate that my NBS selection for today is the Gonzo.

    FLYING DOG GONZO IMPERIAL PORTER

    Baltic Porter

12 ounce bottle poured into Snifter Glass

    9.2% ABU 85 IBU

Appearance - 3.75/5 The head is frothy and tan in color, approximately three fingers thick and dissipated quite fast. Exceptional lacing left behind in the glass as the porter is indulged.

    Smell
    – 3.75/5 The aroma has a faint whisper of roasted malt.

Taste - 4.25/5 This porter incorporates flavors of smooth roasted malts, chocolate and hints of coffee. There is a bitterness that is bold, distinct and strong but not offensive.

Mouth Feel - 4/5 The beer is heavy-bodied, smooth and syrupy. The carbonation is slight and makes the tongue tingle just a bit. The alcohol is hidden well however there is a slight aftertaste that hangs around on the tongue well after sipping this beer.

Overall - 4/5 I enjoy Porters a great deal and I have had one other Baltic Porter. Flying Dogs Baltic Porter is a solid well rounded version of this style. The complex flavors are subtle, the bitterness is strong, the alcohol is hidden well and the feel is heavy and smooth resulting in a solid offering from beginning to end. I would drink this offering again however I would not go out of my way to track it down.

Flower backdrop is for all the Mom's on their special day!!!

Re the 50/50, after looking at your thoughts about the beer (and how seldom it has been reviewed) I'm thinking that I may have been misremembering and it may not have been one of those we sampled. I'll see what I can find next time I'm in a place where there's some to try.

I always get a kick when brews from my back yard are reviewed or talked about. I agree on your review - it's a solid beer. When they were just getting started, before their brewery was assembled, they often showed up at local festivals with small batch stuff. The first brew I had from them was Coco Loco - and it blew me away. The small batch version was much more coconut forward - like drinking a mounds bar. Cheers!
