Went with a Stoneface APA for this Sunday. Excellent, smooth crisp Pale Ale. I look forward to popping my other Stoneface bottles this week.

    Michael,

I agree with your sentiment that what distinguishes a 'good' modern day AAL is more of a hop presence. What I appreciate about Lord Chesterfield Ale is that there is a perceptible hop presence in that beer albeit it is subtle.

If we can go further 'back in time' the other aspect that I think makes for a 'good' AAL is a lower percentage if adjuncts to permit a more perceptible malt malt backbone. Our great grandfathers had a chance to drink this sort of beer; what we homebrewers classify as being a Classic American Pilsner.

There is all sorts of great new and resurrected beers being produced today but for some reason not too many breweries are willing to make the 'jump' to produce CAPs. The only packaged CAP that I can think of is Straub 1872 Lager.

@drtth, have you reviewed Straub 1872 Lager yet? I discussed that beer in this thread: http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/straub-1872-lager.144714/

    Cheers!

Rated, but not reviewed, so I don't rememer many details well or have a record of what I thought at the time. But my score at that time was higher than it gets for most adjunct lagers.

This difficulty in keeping track of the details is one of the reasons I've almost totally switched away from ratings only and am slowly going back and reviewing some of the beers I've only rated.
