Goood Morning and welcome to New Beer Sunday Happy Holidays edition. In lieu of alliterative lunacy and regular routine I've been given leave to present the first annual NBS Holiday Poem:

'Twas the New Beer Of Sunday and all through the thread
BA'ers admired their beer's frothy heads.
The beers were all poured with exceptional care
To many a thirsty, admiring stare.
The smart phones and cameras took many pics,
So beers' tasty beauty to minds could affix,
    Magnetically drawing desire from all
Who gather each Sunday to answer this call.
But will it be tasty, will it smell great?
Will it be worth all the cost, all the wait
Required to purchase such worthy ferment?
Or will they regret all the effort they'd spent?
Eyes beheld beers that were poised near to face,
Judging the clarity, color, and lace.
Then many sniffs pulled of their beers' sacred smell,
    Discovering flavors bouquet can foretell;
Aromas to gladden the heart through the nose.
    In many BA'ers desires arose.
And now that first taste was at last gladly sipped,
And tongues enjoyed fully what past them had slipped,
And brains got the messages, pausing to think
Of the chorus of flavors caressed in each drink.
Will it be the best beverage to ever exist?
Will it be an elixir a Unicorn kissed?
Will it be a foul liquid to pour down a drain?
A beer to be warned of and treat with disdain?
Come join us today on this quest and you'll learn
What we NBSers enjoy to discern.
Come join us each Sunday, there's nothing to fear.
Happy drinking to all, and to all some New Beer!

Happy Holidays and Heartfelt Thanks to you all for joining together and making possible this wonderful, ever-expanding Quest For Fine Beer. Won't you raise glass and join me in a toast I am known to... occasionally give at the odd beer gathering? Here's To American F***ing Brewers! Happy Holidays, NBS. Cheers!

Wow @cavedave, what a surprise! Christmas poetry! If I'd have known, I'd have written something apropos. Can we make this a tradition? Very clever indeed.

Well, after that great lead-in, it's hard to follow. However, today's new breakfast beer is:

    $ 16.19 (including tax)/750 mL bottle ($ 0.637/oz) at Oppermann’s, Saginaw, MI
Undated bottle at 42 degrees into a hand washed and dried JK snifter
    Aroma – sour, oaky
Head average (Maximum 3.7cm, aggressive pour), off white, creamy with rocks, diminishing to an irregular three to five mm ring and thin layer with rocky outcroppings
Lacing poor. Some slight dragging of the ring which quickly rejoins
Body – medium orange, hazy, effervescent (bottle conditioned)
Flavor – definitely sour, mulled spices with no particular flavor, don’t really notice any chestnut but the tannin and vanillin from the oak come through; no malt, no hops, no alcohol, no diacetyl
Palate – medium, watery, soft fuzzy carbonation

A pleasant sour which is another that would make a good gateway into sours for those who think they don’t like sours. However, the price may keep some experimenters away.

    Appearance 4, Aroma 4, Flavor 4, Palate 4.25, Overall 4. Rating 4.03, rDev -1.2%

I bought this beer because of the chestnuts used in it. I don't know anyone else who actually eats chestnuts but I like them. I don't really notice any chestnut overtones in this beer, but who cares! It's still pretty darn good.

    Enjoy the season, y'all!

    The first present I opened!!

    Merry Christmas Everybody!!!!!!!!!!

In a past NBS thread I discussed an Altbier from Olde Mecklenburg Brewing: https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/new-beer-sunday-week-574.388204/#post-4532126

There are not many US commercially brewed Altbiers and frankly this is not a widely consumed beer in Germany either. The German word “alt” means old, as in the old style of beers in Germany before lagers became popular. An Alt is considered to be a hybrid beer since it is brewed with an ale yeast (albeit at cooler temperatures than most ales are fermented to restrain the production of esters (fruity flavors)). Once fermentation is complete the German brewers of Dusseldorf will lager this beer to further enhance the ‘clean & crisp’ qualities of this beer.

Since this beer style is not easily obtainable I was very happy to be a recipient of a commercially brewed Altbier from Tired Hands:

    Tired Hands Trendler Alt

Trendler Alt is our reverent and forward thinking-thinking riff on Alt beer. Brewed with a plethora of specialty malts (Brewed with Munich, Vienna, and Caramel malts). Softly dry hopped with Cascade. We brew and can this beer for Jean’s grandfather, Joseph Trendler, but make enough of it to share with everyone. Layered and familiar.”

Served in my Spiegelau Lager glass:

    Appearance:

Pours a copper color with a fluffy off-white head.

    Aroma:

There is an interesting mix of malty aromas interspersed with some citrus (from the soft dry hopping).

    Taste:

The flavors follows the nose: a pleasant combination of malty flavors accompanied by a bit of citrus hop flavors.

    Mouthfeel:

Medium-thin bodied, moderate carbonation and a pleasant dry finish.

    Overall:

I really enjoyed drinking this beer!! It had a very pleasant mix of malty aromas/flavors which were complemented nicely by the subtle citrus aromas/flavors. I wish this beer was brewed more frequently by Tired Hands Brewing.

    Cheers!

Mornin' NBSers, with Holiday best wishes to all.

We're hosting the family Christmas gathering this year. I've been drafted to be the Assistant Cook and Bottle Washer and Wrapping Paper Clean Up Guy, so probably will not be back again until day is done, but I have an ideal Night Time beer lined up and will probably be putting some quiet classic music on the player to relax In the Still of the Night.

@cavedave I love your adaptation of the Christmas classic. The original got a nice reading from a couple of the kids last night before they were tucked into their beds.

Well the morning coffee is just about finished now, so:

    Cheers, all!

    Hello New Beer Sunday.

Sadly, I'm here already. The plan was to go to my sister's for Christmas, well, it's an ice rink out there. So, here I am, after a plate of beef bacon, and here for a new brew.

A good start to the day, under the circumstances. I hope you all are able to be with your loved ones today, and enjoy it.

This pours a very clear golden color. It has a 1 finger, very white head. The head did dissipate fairly quickly. The nose is somewhat sweeter than most wheat beers I've had. It has the banana, but a sweet note as well. The taste is slightly sweet. Banana. Feels about normal for this style. Not bad at all.

    Merry New Christmas Beer Sunday!

I am really excited that Christmas falls on a Sunday this year. So excited that I have been laying in a store of beers that I have never reviewed in anticipation of today. Sadly, I am going to exbeerience Christmas Interruptus as my tasting group is having a get-together at Noon! I will be home by 1630 to watch Th' Stillers game, but since I have to work tomorrow, I do not know how deep into my stash I will get by the end of the day. In the interim, here is my first, a surprise to me since I did not know that like Anchor Christmas, it is an annually-changing beer:

Good morning again everyone. @cavedave you are the best at doing things up right for a holiday edition of NBS! What a fantastic year you have had, Dave with all of your ferocious first lines, and NBS with all of it's fanfare and Sunday morning bell ringing! It's like Christmas every day in this thread.

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good beer Sunday!

    Corsendonk Pater Dubbel Ale

Pours clear . Chestnut brown with ruby highlights and softer brown hues. Tan head of Belgian style foam that dwindles and leaves plenty of lace to adorn the glass as you drink.

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

The nose is very fruity . Vibrant with plum and then showing a bit of cool sugar, spice and earth. As the foam falls the nose settles in with sweet raisin and dried dates.

Taste is festive with molasses and earth. Soft brown sugar and sweet dried fruit. A touch of bitterness leaves it to linger sweetly . Crisp finish with plentiful bubbles. It's the alcohol not the hops that comes to bitter the finish in this beer and when it does it shows you a light warmth after the swallow. Dries as it lingers with plenty of soft rich malt and a light plum like tartness. Light soft caramel and light cocoa as it warms.

What a beautiful dubbel. Complex malt with vibrant festive flavors and perfect execution.

Merry Christmas Beer Advocate and NBS!

    Couldn't resist . . .

I know,I know, not this year's label but I had to use a stock photo and this was what I found.

    Score 3.9
    look: 3.75 | aroma: 3.75 | taste: 4 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 4

Appearance is like dark amber honey with whitish cap and good lacing.

Aroma is toffee malt, some spice (hops I believe) and something vinous. Not a table wine sort of thing, more sherry like and reminiscent of the homemade muscadine wine of my youth.

Taste is rich toffee malt with spicy hints. Again the vinous quality is there but not intrusive. Rather like a buttress holding up the malt wall. Hops are lightly present and noticed more in the finish and lingering aftertaste. Not a complex flavor but a good one that seems to keep things neatly in balance. A Winter Warmer deriving it's spice from hops as it were. There is also a bit of nuttiness in the aftertaste which I presume is malt driven.

Texture is silky rich in a medium way, not heavy but certainly not a light weight.

Similar to Bell's Brown but this Christmas Ale is more balanced and nuanced. I like what I can only describe as the vinous touch because it adds a dimension which isn't a competing or overriding flavor. This is a well thought out brew without the gobsmacking wallop of heavy flavors or head whacking of high ABV. I must say my first impression was not a Scottish Ale, at least as I understand them, but a more refined version of something like Samuel Smith's Winter Welcome Ale.

I can't tell you how happy it makes me to have you bring the same love and understanding of fine beer to NBS that I first was privileged to experience some time ago. More than that the expressive sensuality you bring to your writing is a privilege we all here share in appreciating. I think I speak for all of us when I say, thanks for being the voice of what we all love, that spark that gets the desire going which is something you never fail to do. Thanks for all of this, @utopiajane , have a Merry Christmas, it's a pleasure to be your co-host, and I consider you my sister-in-beer. Cheers!.

Glad you could join us, man, great review, you always manage to get that precision in there while adding a freewheeling narrative flair that keeps interest in the reading. I know you have Woody Allen as your avatar, and I can get that wry observation attitude in what I read of yours, but to me you have always seemed like the Hunter Thompson of beer. Hope to see ya later. Cheers!

    Merry Christmas, NBSers!
We have a white-ish Christmas east of Cleveland as there's still some snow on the ground but it's mostly melted at this point. My better half is a bit disappointed but I'm happy :stuck_out_tongue:
I'm busy in the kitchen cooking but of course there's enough time between steps to enjoy a beer (and write a post)!
I'm really enjoying the beers currently on the market that seem holiday colored/ themed without explicitly being so, as opposed to the usual spiced Christmas ales. In this case a nice fruity sour.
I can't say I am familiar with the raw taste of marionberry but it shows up in this beer along with blackberry and the usual gose notes of light wheat and a bit of salt. Quite tasty without being too complex - and while I love complex beers, sometimes (like while cooking) just being able to enjoy it is best! I only hope it stays fresh as this is part of a 12-month sour series and it would be great on a warm summer day.
    Cheers to you and yours!

    Merry Christmas friends,
Besides the Red Tail swooping and nabbing the squirrel ten feet away and the mysterious deer leg in the tree, this mornings walk was perfect as ever; except more perfectly my family will arrive shortly.
Thanks to Dave for waxing poetic and beginning what I expect to be a very interesting day!
On Christmas our family has had a long tradition of hiking through The Guilford Woods on the Guilford College campus. These woods are in west central Greensboro, an urban marvel, a place of refuge for thousands through the years. These very same woods were the hiding place for slaves moving northward from the 1820s until The Civil War. I've been enamored of this place since I was a child. It really is magical still. The Quakers were anti-war and anti-slavery and have been here since the 1700s. The New Garden graveyard embraces pioneers born in England in the 1600s. British soldiers from The Battle of Guilford Courthouse (1781) are entombed amongst the huge oaks. The battlefield is just east and north. These woods emerged as a prominent station on The Underground Railroad. I revere The Guilford Woods like a church. I hope to send along later today a picture of my grandsons leaning on the largest Tulip Poplar in North Carolina! More later.
Today's beer is Dirty Bull Brewing Co. Imperial Rice IPA 8.2% 70 IBU Durham, North Carolina
This one is burnished gold with a gentle haze in the middle. Nice rich frothy head with an attractive and active refilling bead.
Tropical aromas of thick crushed orange and something pulpy like peach or guava...becoming like a nice marmalade. A big rich malt- fleetingly sweet- arrange quickly around sharp bitterness, then sweet, then ending up tasting like damned liquid marmalade! This is a very nice beer with grace and heft. I could say the 8.2% was hidden and well integrated- because it is- but this is a well done strong beer that I would buy often. Another newer brewery that I will support.

[IMG] First I want to say Merry Christmas and thank you to @cavedave and @utopiajane for your thread, it is my weekly favorite. This is my 1,199 beer tick and going for 2,000 later. This monster clocks in at 13.1% ABV and I believe it is best before 9/28/19, poured a little cooler than room temperature. Pours a very dark chestnut with a massive 3 finger tan head that takes its time settling. Leaving some thin webs of lace behind. 4.25[IMG] Smell a big shot of slightly grainy alcohol, vanilla, roasty coffee, deep dark chocolate, and some pipe tobacco. 4

Taste follows a healthy dose of coffee, dark chocolate, and booze upfront, wit some stong vanilla, tobacco, and leather in the long lingering finish. 4[IMG] Mouthfeel is a little bigger than medium, moderate amount of carbonation as you would expect, and it is a sipper for sure. 4

Overall this is pretty complex, the booze is upfront, but really an excellent imperial stout. Enjoy your holiday I will be back a little later with a beer worthy of of 1,200. 4

Ha! Woody (Allen) is my nom de guerre, dating back to my first ship, the USS Fulton (AS-11), where I began as a misfit in Deck Department, chipping & scraping paint only to prime and paint over what I just chipped & scraped. It was a pretty rough & tumble ship & division & I started wearing only my BCGs since they were free issue. Everybody in Deck had a nickname & some could even be uttered in public, fewer among civilian females. One day, Bos'n Duffy says, "Hey, Woody Allen, go grab a swab & a cadillac, we got a spill!" It didn't register with me, but everybody else got it and soon, I was "Woody". "John" is too generic anyway and even my late Pops went by "Jack". My full given name is John Stephen Chandler, named for both of my late grandfathers, but my byline is simply J. S. "Woody" Chandler. Pops used to refer to him as "Pseudo-(Great) Uncle Raymond". It's a Chandlerian thing.

It's closing in on my anticipated departure. Here are my other reviews:

    Здравствуйте!

I wish I remembered more Russian from my High School days, over 25 years ago. It would be useful for this beer, because it is a Russian Imperial Stout, and the name of said RIS.

Dosvidanya RIS from Destihl Brewing. Dosvidanya means good bye in Russian. I will be sad to say good bye to this RIS, because it is so amazing. Mellow, but also hits you hard, in a good way. Get it if you can, it's worth it.

    4.53/5 rDev +9.4%
    look: 4.75 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.75 | overall: 4.75

This pours a dark black color, and is a thick pouring beer. The head was 2 finger, and nice and brown colored. The nose of this RIS is rich with the barrel notes, but also mellow at the same time. The taste is mellow, at first, then the barrel hits. Chocolate notes, then a slight burn from the high alcohol, but it is pleasing, and not in an off putting way. It is a rich feeling beer. It is a real treat, one to savor, and to take the time to enjoy it. Top notch Destihl.

Merry Christmas to all on this most special double dose of glorious NB(C)S!

Due to normally scheduled Christmas beers, I'm probably only going to have 2 NB's today.

First up is from Adroit Theory - God is an American DIPA.

Beauty of a beer, this one. Super OJ looker with a billowing white head. I got a bit too into the spirit of the pour and forgot to control the yeast flow, which now hangs suspended like pulp.

Plenty of grapefruit up front on the nose, and if you breathe it in long enough, it creates a sort of spicy sting in the nostrils. Beyond the grapefruit hides a bit of sweetness in the form of mango until a vegetable thing exits out, but not in an overwhelming"rotting" way.

Taste is a fresh, spicy and sweet grapefruit that leaves a pleasant, almost floral finish. Upon swig number two, a touch of grassy joins the party. Without taking away from the initial grapefruitiness, each other taste is sort of complex as well. Rounding out the taste experience is the incredibly well balanced bitterness (when considering a stealthy malt sweetness) throughout.

Medium bodied and dry without any real hint of alcohol heat.

This one is just unceremoniously sitting on the shelves at Wegmans, and I hesitate to fully laud it, as it may disappear quickly and often if I say things like"as good as what The Veil is doing" or "near perfectly designed DIPA", but honestly, this thing is terrific.
