If it isn't broke don't fix it, right?
Next new beer of the day was BCBCS, also courtesy of @FFFjunkie. This was the first beer I opened from the LIF box and was SUPER excited about.

    BCBCS
Again, another beer that has been reviewed quite often but it's a first for me so here goes.
Pour is much like the base version but seemed like the head disappeared much faster with no remnants.
Smell was much like the base with a bit of coffee to go along with it.
Taste was bourbon, coffee, roasted malts. Truly a tasty beverage that I'm thankful to have tried!
Definitely thick like the base version, maybe a tad thinner but still nice and full bodied.
I wish I had time to let this one warm a tad but my wife decided we should take a short trip to the casino in Cherokee, unless I have a new beer there this is my last one until next week. A little disappointed as I had planned to follow this one up with Parabola but time with the wife makes saving that one worthwhile.

New Beer Sunday: A Collaborative Oktoberfest

Evenin’ NBSers, with another another opinion for Oktoberfest fans, along with a special thanks for @lordoftheweins for his opening thoughts today.

Well the weather here today was absolutely perfect for catching up on the chores that got neglected the last few weeks for family outings (which always have priority). This means that not only did I tick off some things I’ve been needing to get done but the “honey do” list got considerably shorter as well.

As for dog stories mine all go back to the years when I was growing up. When I was growing up my family always had dogs, but since getting married to a woman who prefers cats, things have shifted a bit and we are now the staff for our pets rather than their friends. :sunglasses:

The first dog I remember clearly was a Black and White Pointer who was incredibly well trained by my older brother so that when Pheasant season began he was in his element and glory as a real assent at spotting Pheasants in the wild. My personal favorite dog as a kid was a mixed breed named Speckles. Specks was half Pointer and half Cocker Spaniel who had the build of the Spaniel and the coloration of a Black and White Pointer. Specks was full of nothing but love, which is exactly why he was so loved in return.

Later on we also had an adopted dog, who was another Pointer (German Shorthair) that we had "adopted" during one particular Pheasant hunting season when we found his owner blamed Red for the fact he wasn't very well trained as a Pointer. I'm convinced to this day that had we not convinced the owner to give him to us Red’s life would have ended on that day during that Pheasant season. With patience and love he eventually became a mostly loving companion and a reasonably talented Pointer during Pheasant season, but somehow, try as we might, we could never get him to stop cringing when it looked to him as though someone might strike him.

This evening’s new beer is the 2017 Sierra Nevada-Miltenbuger collaborative Oktoberfest.

As usually my review, subject to revision, both as I finish the beer and as I finish off the remainder of a 6 pack or few, can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/140/292433/?ba=drtth#review

The flavors and aromas on this one involve some very complex interplay between the different ingredients. There’s some toasty beady malt with a controlled bit of sweetness that is noticeably there but not overdone. The hops seem both grassy and lightly spicy. The aromas/flavors start off with the malts up front but then early on the hops come out to play as they do the malt and sweetness recede a bit, but the malt aromas and favors never completely disappear. Indeed, the malt aromas are continuously and noticeably present. The ending is semi-dry with both the well controlled hops up front and the malt supporting them almost to that semi-dry end.

Continuing with my plan of listening to lots of Original Cast Recordings of American Musicals, this evening’s music is from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. (With a plan such as this it’s very useful to have friends who collect various recordings. )

Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend

    Cheers, all!

Pours fuscia, with a rose pink head that lasts as a cap. So muck funk! The cherry is initially hard to find, but I taste it more as I sip and the beer opens up. Distinct aftertaste of blood throws me off at first, but eventually becomes less noticeable. The more I sip, the better it gets. Smooth and funktastic.

The dog's keeping watch. She was found lying on the side of a desert road, luckily by someone who volunteered with a rescue. Her original foster didn't want to adopt because she howls at sirens. Lucky me! She's been the best dog a person could hope to have and a blessing in my life. I believe her to be a shepard/husky mix. Whatever she is, it's a great combination.

Cheers to our special animal friends, past and present!

Finished a fun weekend in Chicago with a freshly tapped Half Acre beer, Half Awake. It still isn't on here yet, and I didn't have enough information to enter it, but will update once it is.

    Look: 4 | Smell: 4.25 | Taste: 4.5
    Feel: 4.25 | Overall: 4.25

Look: Lightly colored, like a pineapple-yellow. Had a very small head.
    Smell: Very fruity. Tropical smells.
Taste: Very light and I noticed pineapple to be more prominent than the other tropical fruits.
Feel: Thin feel, making it very easy to drink.

Overall: This pale ale was delicious. If I didn't have to drive back downstate, fighting eclipse traffic, I definitely would have had another. One of four new to me Half Acre beers I had this weekend, with the others on Friday.

Obsidian Stout by Deschutes Brewery. Color black as the ace of spades. Easy sipping. Dry but not ashy like some stouts. Lacks that hint of sweetness in some stouts such as Founders Imperial (which is my one of my favorite stouts ). Somewhat thinner mouthfeel than I expected. Immediately prior to this I drank a Founders Breakfast Stout, which has a much more forward chocolate flavor. Obsidian is much more subtle. Very neutral finish.

The Munich Helles style is how the Bavarian brewers tried to 'mimic' the popular beer style of the mid-1800's of Bohemian Pilsner (i.e., Pilsner Urquell). The Bavarian brewers had the challenge of not having the very soft water of the town of Plzen so they made their best efforts to create a similar beer and Munich Helles was it.

Prior to Munich Helles the beers of Bavaria were dark (amber) in color. The brewing water of Bavaria was well suited to make beers like Bock, Marzen (Ocktoberfest), etc.

    Cheers!

    Hello New Beer Sunday!!!

What a long day, and weekend at work. So glad it's done, and so glad I get next Sunday off. I need it.

So, a long day at work needs a long new beer, and I'm the first to review it here.
Crom! from Oliphant Brewing in Somerset, Wisconsin. I picked up this beauty last Monday. I am so glad I did. It is out of this world. Nice feel. Nice hop taste and feel. Amazing aroma. Seriously, they knocked it out of the park again with this one.

This beer pours a very murky, very hazy, not clear, darker golden color. The head was 2 finger, white, quite frothy when poured. Nice lacing on the glass, and decent retention.
The nose has a nice hoppy, citrus aroma. Not overpowering, but pleasing.
The taste is a bit creamy, a bit citrusy. Smooth going down. Some hop on the backside.
The feel is quite full bodied, and you feel the hop going all the way down.
Damn solid offering from Oliphant. They hit it out of the park with this one. They impress me pretty damn much every time, and this is the reason I travel an hour and a half for their beers.

Will I have another new beer? Maybe. If not see you all the next NBS!

Remedy Hefe-metal, 5.4% ABV, 12 IBU. Pours medium viscosity and cloudy yellow, leaves little lacing. Nose is yest, banana, and cloves. Taste follows, very traditional hefe. Outstanding mouthfeel, overall outstanding. I prefer this over Weihenstephaner Hefe! Wow.

750ml bottle poured into a Cigar City El Catador glass. Pours a pitch black color with light tan creamy head with great retention and lacing around the glass. The nose is very sweet with rum and oak a plenty. The taste is incredibly smooth and creamy with some warmth in the finish from the high ABV and rum barrels. Wow, this is a really solid beer and the rum barrels are a nice change of pace from the typical bourbon barrels you typically see with this type of beer.

On to another one of Lord Hobo's offerings.

    Lord Hobo's Steal This Can.

Pours a hazy, fogged-up orange with a finger of white head on top. Fair head retention with no lacing left behind. Aroma is lovely notes of citrus, orange, tangerine, and lemon zest. Flavor profile is much the same, driving home notes of orange, tangerine, mango, lemon zest, and melon. Nice progression of flavors, instead of being a muddled mess of citrus all at once. Mouth feel is medium in thickness, with a lovely smooth texture that has just a hint of velvety, creaminess to it. Overall, a sublime IPA with a good dose of citrus.

Seems to be the "thing" to post pix of our dogs today, okay, I'll play. Here is my girl, a shelter dog from Alabama.

    As for the beer today.

Going with a new DIPA by Garin Frost and company.

    Bottled on 08/18/2017.
Aromas of pure bittersweet orange rind and juice with a light mango to blend and then cover some soothing danky sweet onion. Light pine came in further underneath to balance. Malts seem somewhat non-existent.
Flavor brought all of those aromas together fully bittersweet casing the aftertaste with the mango, danky sweet onion and pine. Malts seem so smoothed out almost seems unreal.
Mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a dedicated sipping quality about it. Carbonation seemed just a touch under but enjoyable. Mild stickiness, but not cloying.
Overall, what an absolutely fantastic offering by Frost Beer Works. Hoping the brewery allows this one on Tavour for more people outside of Vermont to try.

Greetings All from the great northwest where we are awaiting the solar eclipse. We are not traveling to the zone of totality, should be around 93% here on the ranch. So we will stay put and leave the crowds and traffic to others.

Today we have Slingshot Session IPA acquired on a recent trip to the foothills of the Canadian Rockies.

    Back for one more tonight......

The mrs asked if I would split one with her so I went down and pulled one I thought she might like as much as I would.....

    Here goes:

This review will be short and sweet....

Bright and full of citrus, grass , herbal earthy notes and a hint of hay and a nice tartness to it.

Incredibly simple yet complex and amazing at the same time.

This one is really well done and not anywhere near what I thought a basic saison would be.

Wow just wow......it would fall between 4.5-4.75 for me.

Anyways we don't currently own a dog (we have before) but I feel the need to participate anyways. So here is the best I can do...(at least they have 4 legs and fur in common......)

    Hi there NBS crew:

This week I have a beer from a very generous BA @FFFjunkie. He ran a LIF in the sign-ups for the NBS BIF #6, then picked like 5 winners and sent us all boxes of beer.

    Noon Whistle: Smack That
    [IMG]

Look: Golden Brown with a good amount of off white head that faded pretty quick.
Smell: Very tart smell, a little salt and a mixture of fruits at the back end.
Taste: Not as tart as the smell would suggest up front with a decent amount of some sort of citrus flavor. Also get some hops toward the finish.
Feel: This is light and super drinkable.
Overall: I am starting to really like this style of beer and this is a solid one. On a hot day this beer would work great to session.
