Greetings from rainy Tennessee, and thanks to @cjgiant for a great start today. Great weekly topic as usual. Thus far, my experiences with flying/traveling with beer have been successful and uneventful, although I still get anxious when picking up the bag at baggage claim. I've even developed a habit of keeping some bubble wrap and ziploc baggies in my suitcase - you just never know! I'm with @utopiajane and CJ when it comes to shipping beer. I do it, but I don't like the fibbing at the UPS store. How many pickles/vinegar/jellies can I ship?

Today's new beer is courtesy of @Wasatch and is a great hazy pale ale from Colorado:

    N00b, Odd13 Brewing, Lafayette, CO
    [IMG]

This one looked like a typical NEIPA: a hazy/slightly turbid bright yellow-gold color with a medium-sized head that only reluctantly settled. Aromas were as expected and bright: tangerine, blueberry, some bready malt. The taste did not disappoint - big flavors including oranges, tangerines, blueberries, some earthy/grassy notes, and a restrained bready malt presence. The bitterness from the hops gradually rose and led to a ringing bitter and crisp finish. Medium-bodied and carbonated. Overall, an outstanding beer that seemed more like NEIPA than pale ale, but that line is a moving target, I suppose. Thanks Wasatch!

Ok, folks, still not onto those Portland beers, yet, as I spied this beer I've been meaning to have for NBS for a couple weekends. This collaboration intrigued me, officially a Bruery Terreux release, with Jester King joining in, called Bouffon:

This is a sour wit ale with spices and aged in oak, proclaimed as "tart and witty." Let's see, it starts out a highly clear yellow gold before a the chill of the beer causes condensation on the glass. The head tries hard to not be contained, meaning constant tips of the bottle to get a near full glass (the head is about 50% of its initial glory in my photos). These tips did stir up some of the dregs from the bottom of the bottle, hazing things up a tad.

Oh yeah, the nose is just as I'd hoped. Funky yeast notes with a side car of lime-tartness. This is almost like a 7-Up that has started to turn (if it could), in a most enticing way. Warmth brings out a few other light influences, like white wine, grape, and a little tart berry.

A nice barrage of tiny bubbles seems threatening, but they attack the palate with foam swords. Not quite tickling, almost like they recognize hitting the palate and pull back to soften the blow. They do get a little more aggressive as the warm to our presence.

The first tastes starts more like a flat 7-Up, with the oak influence deadening an opening splash of tartness. I think the funk/quite mild cheese of the yeast also quells the tartness. I didn't want a tongue-ripping sour, but I do find my palate trying to chase the tart versus welcoming the funk/wooden notes. As the beer warms, the tartness' answer of "Polo" to my tongue's "Macro!" become louder. The beer works itself to a nice balance of these, and maybe even starts to lean a little the other way. Perhaps the funkiness is jealous we wanted to play with the tartness and seems to be sulking in the corner. I only start to get a very light sweet earthy spice note (candied lemon zest and coriander, perhaps) late in the pour when I consider that they should be in there.

I particularly liked how this beer blossomed as I drank it, but I feel it skipped over the sweet spot for my palate. I mean that in the sense of being above a 4.5, not about failing and dropping below 3.75. This one was just short of being a top rated beer for me (and I rated it higher than most).

Despite my self loathing over the singular dimension of my style choice, here we go yet again with another IPA.

It's just a dirty, dingy, muddy orange thing that looks a little like OJ with a splash of cranberry juice. Head was not so much. Tried to get a little action on the pour but all I got was a thin fizzy film, which accurately describes the lacing as well. Nose is a run between green onion garlic dank and tangerine, with the kind of hop spicing that will start to sting your nostrils if you keep inhaling it long enough. Taste takes no nuance or coyness, as it's just a blast of earthy onion orange. Grainy, feed stock supporting character that finishes meaty and bitter. Body probably borders medium and light. If you enjoy big audacious journeys into what hops can do, than this is a pretty good adventure.

Hey everybody in NBSville. Won't be joining in today as the household is slowly recovering from the evil flu. Fevers, chills, massive body aches, coughing. Fortunate enough that nobody landed in the hospital, as many have not been as lucky.

Cheers, carry on, play nice...back at ya next week, kids.

I pulled snippets from your post. Pretty much everybody approaches this beer with expectations inappropriately set by the "altbier" style description. A "traditional" Munster Alt actually is "supposed" to have a little bit of a sour quality. I'm assuming the tang you mention is probably that, which is there deliberately... but enjoying it is another story. Nonetheless, when someone is expecting one thing, but gets another (particularly when it comes to sourness in beer), it can really ruin the experience. Hope this helps. Cheers.

What’s up BA? Hoping your Sunday is going well.

Today’s new beer is thanks to a Nashville run yesterday - Bearded Iris Chasing Rainbows Four.

Classic NEIPA. Hoping for a little more aroma but the flavor and feel are spot on. Very well done!

Poured from 16 oz can dated 2/6/2018

A: Extremely cloudy pale yellow with smallish one finger white head with fairly short retention and little to no lacing. Looks a little like pineapple juice.

S: Faint tropical fruit with pineapple, mango, and passion fruit. A little tangerine. I wish the aroma was more prominent.

T: Juicy tropical fruits following aroma with pineapple, mango, and passion fruit.

M: Medium body with light carbonation. Soft almost creamy texture that is crazy drinkable.

O: Outstanding IPA. So glad I could pick up some super fresh.

I paid $6 for a single (which was a worse $/oz than the full four pack)... so your price seems considerably more than over here. I had no problems paying that (which is less than having a beer at a bar over here), but I (personally) wouldn't pay $30 for a four pack. Keep in mind that odds were against me even liking this one much, and that factors into it. If I thought I'd really love it, I'd pay that amount.

I mean even for Black Note I’m hesitant to pay $30 a 4 pack...for a cherry stout, it’s a really tough sell. I imagine they’ll sit on the shelves for many months.

Feel better Larry and household. I warded mine off pretty good with candied ginger. Horrible stuff but peppery and if you suck on it like a cough drop it actually does you some good.

Greetings fellow NBSers! A bright and sunny day here in the Fourth Corner, where the bank clock across the street says that its 40 degrees at 12:53. It's been a few weeks since I've joined in, between a weird work schedule, or taking Sundays away from beer, or drinking, but not posting, I just haven't swung by. I'd like to encourage everyone to go sign up for the latest NBS BIF. Sign-ups will close after NBS on the last Sunday in February, with most of March for Hints, Hauls, and LIF shenanigans.

My friends Sarah and Ryan made a trip to Texas over the holidays, and brought me back a long sought-after Tick: https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/383/1062/ This brew actually lives up to its reputation.

I've got a couple other things in the fridge (Still including a couple from the last BIF :0 ), so I'll likely see y'all again in a few.

Happy New Beer Sunday! I have a ton of stuff to review, not a bad way to spend a rainy day. No way I'll get to them all today but here's a couple that I was able to jot a few notes on. My apologies again for the blurry pics off my broken phone lens. I'll be getting a new one tomorrow

DDH Double Citra Daydream by Other Half Brewing

"Poured from a 16oz can into a tulip glass. Pale straw in color, completely turbid with a modest white head that settles into a thin lacing. Lots of citra in the nose with a bit some lemon & peach notes. Lots of citrus and more peach-like hop notes, a bit of malt sweetness near the end. Velvety smooth mouthfeel. 8.5% abv is extremely well hidden. Very nice." 4.27/5

Even More Coco Jesus by Evil Twin Brewing

"Poured from a 16oz can into a tulip glass. Jet black in color, with a dark-khaki colored head that quickly settles. Big roasted malt aroma with just a touch of earthiness. Very sweet at first with rich notes of chocolate and a bit of molasses but there is a bit of roasted malt in there that balances it out a bit. Maple syrup and coconut notes are very subtle. Overall this isn't as cloying as I thought it was going to be. This is a nice dessert stout." 4.11/5

Back with another from Westbrook’s Rinse and Repeat series. This one with Nelson hops.

A touch dry and perhaps a little bitter but otherwise a nice showcase for the Nelson hops.

Poured from 16 oz can dated 1/18/2018

A: Hazy golden yellow with 1-2 finger dense white head. Lasting retention and moderate lacing.

S: White grapes, peaches, and apricot mixed with passion fruit and orange zest.

T: Peach, apricot, grapefruit, and tangerine. Nice fruity component mixed with a healthy hop bitterness.

M: Medium body with average carbonation. Finish is fairly bitter and very dry.

O: Excellent IPA that showcases the Nelson hops nicely. I just wish the price point on this series was better.

Westbrook gose, pours a cloudy gold yellow color. Aroma is lemon, lime, oranges and some yeast. Taste is almost the same, a lot of citrus, salt, and a bit sour and tart. It's very much in check in that it doesn't go to any extreme which made it what it was supposed to be,a refreshing easy drinking beer[IMG]

In this thread we ask for participants to give a review of what was experienced with the beer, not just whether it was deemed good or not (though we want to know that as well). If you could take a second to describe what it was that made this beer not good, we'd appreciate it. Thanks.

    Happy NBS BAs!

I had this beer just once before, but my pallet was so crushed and effect by my spicy dinner when I had it that I hope you NBS"ers" dont mind if I include it here today.

Todays new Beer is from NY.

Rushing Duck ----- Divide by Zero ---------- Canned on 1/31/18
Divide by Zero is always changing and this batch features Vic Secret, Galaxy, and Enigma.

Can-Art: Coming form a programming/math background I absolutely love the can art on this one. It's essentially a algorithm written on the side of the can that has been caused by an illegal mathematical operation - division by zero

Pours a deep hazy burnt orange color. Aroma is bursting with New Zealand hoppy goodness. This ones Dank, Herbal and Earthy with notes of topical fruits and Juice.
Taste follows the nose and has a creamy mouth-feel due to it's unfiltered nature. Body is med to full and finish is smooth and dry with a grainy taste(in a good way). This ones not fully NE and not fully anything really. It's its own thing and I love it for that.

    Happy NBS BAs!
