G' afternoon NBS-ers! Happy Anniversary @lordofthewiens and @cjgiant ! You guys are doing a great job so far. It's not easy coming up with topics every other week, but you guys are doing fine. (BTW the pornstar dream was one of my favorites!)

A week away from the BIF date and my target's box is shipping out tomorrow...

Today's entry comes from Michigan from a killer box from @foundersasap

    Arbor Brewing Company: Euchre Pils
    [IMG]

Poured from a 12 oz. can, no date found on the can.

Appearance: Lovely pale sunshine yellow color, with a slight haze to the body. A 1/2 fingers worth of head that dissipates slowly to form a thin cap of tiny bubbles.

Aroma: Grains, hay, corn sweetness, slight hints of peach.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Grains and a little bit of lemon with a bitterness that finishes dry. The mouthfeel on this one is light. Super easy drinking beer that is quite refreshing. Could chug this whole can, no problem!

Overall: This beer is super easy to drink and crushable! On a hot day sitting at the beach or just outside on the front porch, a six pack of this could disappear QUICKLY!

    Cheers!

Modern Times City of the Dead

Happy Sunday, BAs. Let me start by thanking @lordofthewiens and @cjgiant for their year of expert NBS hosting. It's much appreciated. Let me also give a shout out to the NBS BIF agents -- including, especially, @y2kawakami for this fine beer.

Even with a vigorous pour, City of the Dead has a very slow-rising head, but it eventually develops into a half-finger of lush, creamy-looking tan foam on top of a straight-black body. The head lasts the entire pint, leaving relatively little lacing in the form of clingy sheets that slide back down as you drink.

Chocolate malts and a touch of sweetness stand out most in the nose. Maybe a hint of ocean, too, although I may be imagining it.

It has a very interesting, roasty, semi-sweet taste. There are layers of chocolate here. The lightly toasted, almond nuttiness is refined but plays nicely against them. Once again, a distant hint of the sea salt comes in as well.

It's medium bodied with a silky feel.

This is a really tasty stout and one of the better beers I've had from Modern Times. I'm enjoying it quite a bit. Cheers!

Wow! Didn't realized the NBS BIFs had become so clandestine you feared your neighbors wandering eyes. Then again, given the title of the BIF... :sunglasses:

Ohhhh... I finally got it. That ingenious twist to the BIFs. To whom do we give credit for that? @beertunes ??

Nope, not me. I forget who who first mentioned it a couple rounds ago, but it was certainly one of the participants. This is the second time we've done it, and it will be a regular feature going forward.

L - 2-finger offwhite head atop a translucent orange body.

S - bright citrus, pineapple, sweet caramel malt.

T - lots of tropical fruits to start. Backed by an unexpected sourdough breadiness from the malt. Slightly sour but not overdone. Finishes moderately bitter. Low sweetness, low booziness.

F - medium body and carb.

O - Great balance on this one. Glad I have several others to drink later.

A: Beer poured a cloudy oranginsh yellow body without any real amount of head. Fair amount of carbonation bubbles present while drinking. Very simple yet classic example of a farmhouse beer.

S: Peaches were the first smell once the bottle was opened. Along with fruit smells the was also some funky yeast smells noticeable. The wine barrel aging comes out slightly here. The small amount of wine aromas mixes well with the usual farmhouse smells.

T: Wine has a bigger presence here than it did on the nose. The beer also has a slight acid sour taste to it. Fair amount of earthy malt flavors here as well. The presence of peaches takes a back seat to some of the other tastes.

M: Very dry finish even with the addition of the peach. Carbonation levels were good and crisp while drinking. The barrel aging gives the beer a more noticeable sour feel. Overall, fair mouthfeel but not as good as some of the other areas of the beer.

O: Would have liked to have seen the peaches have more characteristics on the taste end. Good amount of peach aromas but minimal flavors. Very clean dry tasting beer. The wine aging brings more sour elements than a typle beer of this style. Nice beer overall.

Hi there all you NBS'ers and Happy Easter to those that celebrate:

I am starting today off with one of my 2 blind crowlers sent to me for the NBS BIF. Since @akatz821 is a madman and sent be 2 blind crowlers, I thought it might be good to split them up a little. This weeks pour looks like this:

Now first off I took a shot with the glassware because @akatz821 sent it in the box and none of the labeled beers came from barrage.

Look as it pours is dark brown, but as it sits in the glass its basically black with a solid light tan head that dissipates quickly.

For smell and taste there was a huge difference between cold and as it warmed.

While still a little to cold this beer smells of all chocolate and not much else. My first thoughts were absolutely chocolate porter. As it warmed I started getting caramel and something else I could not place.

First few drink while it was cold was all chocolate. Also getting more of a brown ale vibe for it, still unsure if its a porter or a brown ale. As it warms I become more confident its a brown ale with huge chocolate and caramel. Also getting a hint of something else, but can't place it.

The feel is medium bodied if it is indeed a brown ale and it has a really dry finish, which is a personal favorite of mine.

After drinking about half of it, I opened the paper sent to identify the beer:

    Barrage Brewing Yada Yada Yada:

Got the brewery right with the glassware. Also since I now know it was going for a snickers taste everything makes sense. I definitely got the chocolate and as it warmed the caramel. The peanut makes sense with hindsight as the flavor and smell I couldn't place. It also explains the super dry finish.

Overall this was an excellent brown ale. If you asked me last year I would have said I hated brown ales, but after trying a few excellent ones from Fieldwork and New Glory I have started to seek out the style more and more. This definitely qualifies as one I really liked and would drink again.

    Time for more beer!

Tomorrow Who's Gonna Fuss? | SingleCut Beersmiths

Poured from the can into a Spiegelau IPA glass. Too Right! March 20th 2018.

Muted and opaque dull brownish orange, to a peach yellow, almost gray colored kind of body. Very soapy head, bright white with bubbly soapy bath bubbles in its makeup. Dissolves pretty quickly too.

Aroma on the hop angle goes for a sick smokey earth quality. Flirting big dank, perhaps a touch of tropical, but large amounts of wood and earth tones hit the nose right away. A faint touch of grapefruit hides as well. Complex, a bit burried and scattered, but nice.

Palate is a bit more subjective. Slightly fizz like body and one that is much more solid and less Imperial feeling on first sip. Good malt depth, even a bit of chewy quality, and stays away from thick alcohol syrupy sweetness. Mid palate has more fruit quality than the nose would suggest. Grapefruit and orange, with a nice touch of sprity and zesty flavors.

Very well controlled Imperial IPA, straightforward and enjoyable.

Easter is a difficult holiday for vegans. Nothing I've tried remotely resembles a ham. But I have a daughter who converted to Judaism, and I make a mean brisket. This recipe comes from one of my favorite cookbooks, and my wife and I will be having it later.
My new beer is Big Old Toboggan, a Baltic porter from SoMe Brewing Company right here in York. They make some good beers. I live in a small town with great breweries and great beer bars in close proximity.
This beer poured a very dark brown with some red at the edges. It has a big, fluffy mocha head that retained well. There was plenty of lace.
The aroma was sweet roasted malt.
Chocolate, both sweet and dark in the taste. A little coffee.
    Medium-bodied, a little thin.
    Would drink it again.

Morning NBSers! I volunteered at the Roller Derby last night, and when done with that, I took the doggo I'm house-sitting out for a nice walk. It was close enough to Sunday when we got back, that I reviewed this one for today: https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/701/336214/?ba=beertunes#review

I'll be shipping to my target for the BIF this week, and one will be in the first box.

New beer number 3, and I'm sticking with "lighter" pale brews: Most Humble Ever, a dry-hopped saison collaboration between Central State and Other Half.

I generally like dry-hopped saisons; they're a natural evolution of the style, I feel, instead of being a forced concoction. This one is good if not exceptional. From my review:

"Strong hops on the nose: bright herbs, citrus, and spicy, earthy yeast. Pale malt base comes across as wheat and straw. Slightly musty, even dirty, on the nose.

Flavor hits right about what you'd expect for a dry-hopped saison: dry, moderately bitter, and bright, with hop tones of citrus and herbs blending with a slightly sweet and rustic pale malt base. Drinks fairly easy: lively and smooth on the palate, with a fairly dry spicy finish."

Like Eroica, I'm torn between the 3.75-4.00 rating for flavor. I'm leaning toward the former overall.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/41325/328291/?ba=Roguer#review
    3.81 / +5.5%

I'm curious why the overall rating for this beer is so low; I'll have to credit the small number of reviews overall. Our own @cjgiant reviewed this beer almost a month ago, and his experience seemed rather close to mine (3.81 overall, with very similar tasting notes).

Not as interesting or unique as Eroica, but an easy drinking mid-day brew. Cheers!

Only have time for one new beer (and barely), guess I’ll be late for family dinner.
Much thanks to @2beerdogs for this beer.

16 ounce, tulip. No date seen on can.
Look is deep orange, peach purée with rose highlights. Large bubbles of fluffy white head. Some sticky lacing.
The nose is grapefruit, mango, floral, grains.
Taste is Dank, white grapefruit, grassy, drying finish.
Mouthfeel is drying, full of flavor for a easy abv beer. Solid choice. Right on rdev at 3.85

    Happy (Easter) NBS all!

This one is a nice mix of juicy fruit and west coast pine with a bit of a bite at the end (in a good way). Very sticky on the teeth and tongue and not light at all

Tastes awesome, smells awesome, and drinks really good

New beer #2, courtesy of either @scream or @GreenBayBA (they each gave me a bottle in recent trades) - thanks fellows!

    Toppling Goliath’s “MoZee” IPA:

Frothy white foam sits atop opaque deep gold liquid; good clarity under long lasting cap; heavy lacing and thick white ring. 4.75

Pineapple, mango, lemon, weedy nose. 4.5

Litely bitter and somewhat dank hops; tropical and citrus fruit flavors all evenly spaced - pineapple, mango, lemon, and grapefruit; no onion or garlic which I frequently get with Mosaic. 4.5

Medium full but not filling or fluffy; moderate carbonation; no astringency (6.7% ABV). 4.25

Overall drinks easy and is quite enjoyable; zesty lite hoppy bitter (45 IBUs) linger; more fruit/hop notes than, and nowhere near as bitter as HopSmack (which I drank again yesterday); all in all a great IPA that looks kinda NEIPA but is all Midwest goodness otherwise; looking forward to popping the next bottle soon. 4.5

    L - trace head atop a grapefruit-flesh orange body.

S - grapefruit, tropical fruits, salt, sugar.

T - tons of grapefruit. I get the blood orange too but it’s a second-string player. Quite tart. High salinity. Low sweetness. No bitterness or booziness.

    F - light bodied, with medium-high carb.

O - Surprised by the low ratings on this. Besides it being a tinge too salty, I have no complaints.

Thank you to all who already posted their reviews. Some great reads here today.

CY 2017 - SIM:AMA (APL) by Alvarado St. in San Francisco.
The can is dated: 03/26/18. Consumed using my Ukrainian mug.
I added it into the system today, and I guess I also have the honor of being the first BA review for this beer.

Look: Pours crystal clear, bright yellow. Very low head formation on a medium aggressive pour. The head itself is bright white, with large bubble, and dissipates very quickly. (3.5)

Smell: Being a lager, this is obviously not the most pungent beer, though the smell reminds you much more of the lighter WC IPAs than lagers. I've never quite had such a hoppy aroma on any lager. (4.25)

Taste: Both sweet and bitter. There is your typical corn-like sweetness that is typical to all lagers, but all the hops they got in this guy (bitterness is 50 IBU by the way) definitely mess with your head. There's quite a bit of floral hop character on the front end, then sweetness in the middle, and bitterness again on the back end and the aftertaste. Alcohol is at 6.5%, and not apparent at all. (4)

Feel: Light and easy going. High carbonation, typical of the style. (3.5)

Overall: I'm not really a fan of lagers, but picked this up on a whim. I guess that's what all of this craft obsession is about though. This beer is clean, smooth, pleasant, and I'm sure most people would love it. Definitely the best lager of any type I have ever had. (4)

Overall BA rating came out to 3.98. Cheers!
