#2 from @Ozzylizard, I’ve been eyeing this for 4 months. Tonight, we dance.

I always equate every BA stout I try to BCBS, which was my first foray into BA stouts, a foray that took me 90 minutes to finish a 12 oz bottle back in 2012. Note: I don’t like bourbon or whiskey as a stand-alone drink. At all. But that first BCBS, besides lighting me up, also changed my worldview.

So on to Boris Royale. The BCBS verbiage was provided because, while this is significantly lower ABV that BCBS, it has that heft, that chewiness that I still love about BCBS.

The pour is black, with a little bit of leakage to brown on the edges. The nose has loads of stone fruit and char notes, and the barrel is very forward - maybe a bit too forward.

The taste has the stone fruit and char, but the barrel pulls forward the rich toffee notes, giving this a depth that is a bit surprising at 9.4% ABV. There’s a noticeable alcohol burn, but that just cinches the BCBS comparison knot. A really excellent BA stout, IMHO.

A- A hazy golden straw with a two finger white head

S- Citrus, hints of tropical fruits, some lactose and rye, touch of wet grass.

T- Citrus, some tropical fruits, touch of stone fruits, some sweet malt and lactose, hints of rye.

    M- Smooth, medium body.

O- A good DIPA, but I don’t think age was friendly to this beer. Opens up as it warms.

And this one will likely draw my New Beer Sunday to a close. The GF was a fan of the original Fort from Dogfish Head, so when they came out with this variant this year, she was all over it. I seem to recall thinking the original Fort was ok, but apparently I didn't rate or review it here. This Fruit-Full Fort has been packed with berries and an altered malt bill, as the DFH website explains:
Let's see what this extra berrified Fort (over and above the raspberry of the regular) has in store:

The beer pours a burgundy, a little lighter until the beer got past half full. The head is a raspberry tan head that doesn't fade quickly, which is mildly impressive for an 15+% beer.

Nose has an interesting berry wine note, but not with a robust sweet fruit scent - as it has a light vinegary note to it. Perhaps the elderberry is bringing a little tartness or funkiness. There is also the slightest hint of alcohol.

The taste starts with a little tart-sweetness, under which there appears a nice malt base. The flavor is is hidden a bit - maybe adding a little wooden herbal note - but it also seems to give a little body to the beer. Huge berry notes continue to balance on a sweet and tart line, maybe leaning slightly sweet. A light carbonation is boosted by an alcohol tingling presence. The beer ends with a lingering berry note, a little on the tart side.

This beer is a berry blast, mostly. It doesn't stray into full on berry juice - I think maybe the decision to include a stronger malt may have been a good idea. My first sip was a little medicinal, but the feel doesn't get to seeming syrupy to me, saving it from this impression later in the drink. The ABV does continue to play into the medicinal side, however, and I could see many people thinking it a tad more cough syrup-like.

    New Beer Sunday: A DIPA

Evenin’ NBSers with a report for consumers of complex, flavorful East Coast style DIPAs. (Before the NEIPA there was the East Coast IPA with it’s definite firm malt backbone and the West Coast IPA with it’s focus on the hops and bitterness with an almost concealed malt sweetness.)

This evening’s new Beer is the Double Cannon Double IPA from Rough Seas. While I’ve often enjoyed the Rough Seas IPA (Loose Cannon) this is my first time trying this DIPA.

As usual my review, subject to revision until I finish this beer (and a 2nd bottle in a week or so), can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/898/141783/?ba=drtth#review

The Aromas/Flavors are fairly complex and tightly integrated with lots of toasted caramel malt, some pine resin, some citrus and some citric zest. The bitterness which becomes more obvious as the malt sweetness fades away in the dry finish is resinous, spicy and earthy. On the whole this is a reasonable DIPA that is worth giving a try. However, given a choice I’d choose the Rough Seas Loose Cannon IPA since I definitely prefer the hop-malt balance in the IPA. (BTW I thought this beer was fairly temperature sensitive in that the aromas/flavors became much more enjoyable as they became more tightly integrated into a single profile as the beer warmed.)

This evening’s music on the player is by Johann Strauss Jr.. I once had the opportunity to spend a couple of months working and living in Vienna. While there I scored a ticket to attend a live performance by the Vienna Philharmonic, one of the world’s greatest orchestras. The whole program that evening was music by Johann Strauss, Jr.. The evening turned my thinking around about his music, it’s value and how enjoyable it could be (even if Waltz music does sometimes seem a bit old fashioned). Here are some pictures of the concert hall.

Strauss — Tales from the Vienna Woods

(Since the Vienna Woods border on the city itself it was easy to use public transit to get there easily for a pleasant Sunday afternoon walk in the woods.)

    Cheers, all!

    Good evening BA

Thanks a ton to @superspak for this fantastically tasting O.N. beer.

Pours fruity orange(ish), with a light amount of particulates supplying a bit of cloudiness. Smells and tastes of equally balanced tropical and fruited earth hops. These were so well balanced, I was unable to detect anything in particular.. but that's my issue I can't seem to fix with these beers. MF was medium and full. No discernible bitterness ..and very little carbonation.

This is an extremely well done APA. For 5.5% ABV, I was astounded at the flavor profile. Would love to experience this one again... fer shur!

Thanks for the kickoff, @cjgiant . I have to say my exercise program is non-existent, so it is a good thing my drinking is minimal.

So we are in Liberty, ME for the week on Cargill Pond. We meandered our way up here yesterday, arriving around six p.m. Four hours according to the computah...we left at 9 a.m....time anomaly? Nice place, built by the owner. Heated concrete slab floor is a cool idea. We are on the small end of the pond and it is still big enough for us to fish and poke around. It is extremely quiet...almost spooky quiet.

Well, we did find Oxbow in Newcastle sort of on the way up. Interesting place, could not stay long. Tried a wild fermented saison that was outstanding and astonishingly clean for a wild fermentation.

Tonight's victim is Oxbow Catalyst, barrel aged farmhouse ale brewed with local wildflower honey, bottled October 2017.

It says it is a Bier de Miele, which I am not gonna look up right now. What I will say is that this tastes and smells wonderful, so I am not too concerned about what it is or isn't right now. Pours cloudy as the picture shows, but it is brighter than the lighting shows. Nice foamy head that lasts to the end. Crackery, floral, lemony, funky, mildly tart this says drink me. The taste is initially tart and funky, with sweetness and floral honey. There is lemon that is a fresh note. To me, there is certainly a prominent white wine character. Extremely tasty, well-brewed beer. Loght, tefreshing, just enough acidity.

Ok...so it will score north of four. Style...dunno yet if it is even close. A bit pricey at $16 for the half liter, but man it was a tasty 500 mls!

Moderate pour yields a white head over an ever so slightly hazy body with some sticky lacing. Nose of hops, grass, malt, and ever so slight honey wafting in and out. Taste mirrors nose very nicely with a lively carbonation. Certainly a very refreshing, hoppy pils with a clean and crisp finish. Cheers to B. United Importers for their initiative in bringing a tank of this beer to the US, dry hopping it, and canning it in Connecticut!

Moderate to vigorous pour yields a 5/8 inch white head over a slightly hazy, light orange body. Head dissipates fairly quickly leaving almost no trace. Nose of slight sourness and passion fruit. Excellent wheat IPA! Amazing lasting head retention and thick foamy lacing the whole glass. Aromas and flavors of big grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, peach, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, mango, melon, citrus peel/rind, peppercorn, and pine hops; with moderate wheat, cracker, white bread, lightly toasted biscuit malt balance; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Medium-high carbonation, light-medium body, and moderately crisp finishing. Balanced bready/grainy wheat and sticky hops in the mouthfeel. Light resins/rinds, increasing bitter dryness, minimal lingering hop astringency. Very flavorful/refreshing, 5%. Not watery at all. Labeled as Citra/Amarillo, but it's mostly Amarillo; really spot on profile. Extremely juicy, vibrant, dank, and earthy balanced hop complexity; nice pale/wheat malt backbone, with minimal residual sweetness. Glad I got the 6 pack. Great summer IPA all around. Arbor has definitely been improving in recent years. They just rebranded and went all cans this year. I liked this just as much as the Spring one with Chinook, Azacca, Galaxy, and Vic Secret. 4.03
    [IMG]

Yet another Speciation I had to add. MI C hops+Galaxy. Fantastic! Awesome head retention/lacing for a sour. Aromas and flavors of big tart/sour lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, peach, pear, pineapple, red/green apple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, berry, citrus peel/zest, white wine, hay, straw, grass, and oak; with moderate wheat, cracker, white bready malts; lighter notes of peppercorn, pine, leathery/musty funk, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tartness; light herbal/grassy bitterness and yeast/oak spiciness on the finish. Medium-high carbonation, light-medium body, and moderately crisp finishing. Balanced bready/grainy malt and lactic acid in the mouthfeel. Light hop stickiness and oak tannins. Light-moderate increasing acidic/carbonated dryness, no pucker/astringency. Highly refreshing, not overly lactic, 6.3%. Fantastic well rounded Brett/Bacteria complexity and citrus/fruity hops; nice malt backbone against acidity, and solid oak foeder presence. There is a good reason I buy every single beer they release to market. I have 6 more right now. 4.28

My 2nd NBS for the day.. although it's not what I had hoped it could be.

I've never had a Gose before, so I went to my local beer store, and was recommended this as a good entry for the style. Smelled of berries and light lemon and fair amount of malts. Taste was not bad, but it wasn't my cup of tea. My 1st impression was ..hmmm, this isn't sour, and drinkable. Subsequent tastes were not to my liking. I'm not saying it's not good. I just didn't enjoy this.

To compare this to food: I don't like peas, but I know lots of people think they're great.

Poured from a can dated 6/22/18. Pours a nice opaque tangerine orange with about two fingers of foamy white head. Smell is citrus. I get some tangerine, but overall, just a lot of citrus. Taste is sweet, but not overly sweet. Again, tangerine sticks out for me, but it's just a very nice fruit taste. One of my favorites from Tree House. The mouthfeel is medium and drinks very nicely. Just an overall great beer.

Having Mikhail BBA Espresso Russian Imperial Stout by stone brewing. This one is a delicious coffee bomb. I believe this was released a while ago and the coffee is still there, so I'm impressed. Of course there is some cacao and bourbon doing its work too. Not much dark fruit, but I prefer it that way. Good stuff, glad I grabbed it.

Thanks to JSR for yet another JK.
Gentle to moderate pour yields a one inch off white (very light pink) head over an amber/light mahogany head with some lacing. Head dissipates down to a ring in a few minutes and comes back with a swirl or two. Nose of fig, slight smoke, and some sort of tart raspberry (hey, it's my nose, not yours!) Taste is mostly tart with fig and I like it. Nice feel and overall, I guess this needs to cellar for a couple three years cuz I'm really diggin' this.

Had a few with my neighbor while the kids played earlier. We had several but only one more new one. Another from Odd Side, I received several beers from them in a SuperBowl pool as well as in a trade a while back and have enjoyed them all.

Poured a slightly hazed orange with a finger of white head that disappeared pretty quickly.
Smells tart and fruity, green apple and peach mainly but some lemon too. Not as much funk as I expected from the name.
Taste is lemony tartness, biting into a crabapple, the peachiness gives it a little sweet taste. Still a jaw tingler.
Light to medium bodied with good carb levels.
Overall a good sour from a brewery I usually associate with stouts.

Taste is dank on the start but finishes sweet, as I'm used to with Tired Hands. A little heavier on the feel, but quite creamy. A nice take on the beer.

Back at it, last new beer of the night. At my in laws place now. Last Christmas or two ago, I got my father in law a mixed 6 pack of big stouts (a style he seems to prefer) and 2 tulip glasses. I think I use the glasses more than he as he prefers the red solo style. Oh well.

16 ounce can, packaged 7/11/18. Fresh!
Pours a creamy pale orange, golden. Hazy with almost finger of head that sticks around. <pun intended>. The nose is Oj, grapefruit, Tropical fruits, some sort of overall sweetness. Soft, mango, guava, less bitterness but there at the end. Finishes with sweet ruby red grapefruit.
Thinner body for DIPA. I like this a lot less than Boss Tweed but still an excellent hazy coming out of The Great Beer State.

I feared that. Beer #2 is definitely from you, though

If beer #1 isn't from you, then it's from @JBowenGeorgia (which makes sense, since the beer is from Georgia).

Or @Buck89 (which sorta makes sense, since the beer is from Georgia.

If it's not from them, then I've been stealing beer in my sleep - and walking 500 miles-ish to do so.

    Which is entirely possible.
