That beer changes a LOT after 30 days. Inside of 30 days, and especially inside of 2 weeks (I’ve had it 4 days old), I’d punch my Grandma to get a 4-pack.

And I love all of my Grandmas.

Hello, NBS friends. Mrs O and I are on vacation in Marco Island FL, so naturally I muled a few beers here to launch my happy hours in style - and I included a couple of beers for NBS, courtesy of @SammyJaxxxx in NBS BIF #8. First up, one of the best IPA’s I’ve had the pleasure to try. Kane flocking ROCKS.

Pours a hazy golden orange color (per Mrs O) with a thick slightly off-white head. Dank citrus notes dominate the nose, especially grapefruit and oranges (thank you, Citra hops), and there’s also malt notes. I am now officially salivating.

A healthy gulp buries the palate in dank citrus flavors, but they’re balanced by the Pilsner and crystal malt to yield one of the most balanced, flavorful IPA’s I’ve had. Yes, I typed that.

Hello. Hello. Hello, fellow libation imbibers. It's time to close the book on a week that I would like to close the book upon.

New Fruited Sour Sunday made me toss something in the fridge this morning that has been sitting patiently in my basement for over a year now, for some reason. It's always been eyeing me up, and me it, but I kept my distance. Today, I lost control and dug in.

Werk Force - Super Internet Sniper

A sour ale aged in gin barrels with boysenberries added.

Super Internet Sniper is a super fine lookin' piece of alcoholic beverage. The body has tremendous clarity thanks to a long sabbatical in the basement and a careful pour. The deepest of reds fills the glass and flirts with purple, appearing as a bright, vibrant zinfandel. The purple tinted head is immediately frothy and active. It never dissipates, remaining a sturdy crown throughout the drink and leaving full coverage sheet lacing on its way down. The look alone is mouthwatering. (4.5)

The nose is loaded with complexity. No one aspect rules this beer, it's very well rounded. It starts off with lactic yogurt quality, add to that the initial boysenberry burst. The stems and skins of the boysenberries and dry, splintered oak bring what I can only imagine will be tannins to the middle. There's a soft touch of funky lactic acididty and a sharp cheesiness, like an aged goat cheese. These cheesy, funky, yogurt notes play well with the boysenberries. It gets a little sweaty with some time in the glass and that adds to the overall complexity. Again, this is well balanced. (4.25)

The flavor keeps up with the nose. That dry, splintered oak runs from front to back while each layer builds upon that aspect. Boysenberry flesh, skin, stem is softly tart, softly sweet. The mustiness is back, weaving in and out of the whole. The yogurt has fallen but the acidity thrives with each drink leaving you wanting another. Each drink morphes from the last. As this guy warms up that gin comes forward in the most complimentary way possible, with a juniper brightness. This is some really good suds. Perfect balance all around. (4.25)

This beer weighs in a tick shy of moderate but an instant frothiness washes over the tongue. Tannins build with each drink leaving the lower lip and tongue a bit numb while the tartness and acidity lingers along the cheeks. This beer is dry and acidic but in very approachable ways, neither of which being overdone. The mouthfeel borders on some of the better Belgians out there. This is impressive. (4.25)

Super Internet Sniper is damn fine. It's acidic and fruity but also oaky and musty. The gin barrels are the coup de grace with that whisper of juniper really making all other aspects shine even brighter. This beer is vibrant and incredibly even handed. I can't get enough, oh, wait...this is my last bottle. (4.25)

Happy Sunday NBS players. A very cool/sunny fall day here on the island and windy as all hell. Been inside on the couch watching mindless football all day. Got some grilling lined up for dinner while the weather allows for it. Might get into some Dare Devil season 3 depending on how compelling the late game is.

My new beer today is Powder Dreams, neipa,, from Captain Lawrence brewing. This variant is dry hopped with mosaic lupulin powder and wakatu/bravo hops. The brew checks in at 7.5% abv and has a 9/27/18 canning date.

A murky pour that yields an off-yellow color. A big fluffy white head that hangs around. On the nose I get hops, and sugars with subtle tropical fruits. A rather dry start to the drinking. Lots of soft/plush hop notes up front with a very smooth flow and finish with pretty much non-existent bitter. It's really not very sweet and the fruit notes come off on more of the subtle side. I mostly get a mix of tropical/stone fruit. Notes that stand out the most are lemon, grape, peach, and mango. I would have liked a little more depth here. The mouth feel is moderate and really has a nice juicy/creamy feel that strengthens the more I consume. Very easy drinking and it really goes down fast.

Overall, a decent/nice beer. Sometimes I find the use of lupulin powder tends to find it's way to the texture with a sort of powdery/sediment feel but this seems pretty subtle at best here. I'm right around a 4 here players.

#2, another from @SammyJaxxxx and Kane, this time a DIPA. That’s Mrs O photobombing in the background - i think she’s looking for the Everglades. She keeps saying something about a tour - if I’m not in next week’s NBS, please send a search party. Thanks in advance.

This looks EXACTLY like Head High, which I just reviewed, and that’s not surprising - this has the same malt bill as that magnificent beer.

The nose is a bit different, though - there’s a significant pine note, to accompany the citrus, and that pine brings along a resiny note as well.

The pine/resin collab are more forward on the taste, and then the dank citrus notes barge in and demand a seat at the table, which they’re granted, along with the Pilsner and crystal malts.

This is two months old. It has literally not dropped off a millimeter. And if it has, I shudder to think how good it would be fresher, because it is world-class, IMHO.

Cheers! I agree with ya, it’s a bit hard to distinguish that it’s a mosaic hopped beer. It’s also pretty tough to get things super fresh since I live where I do. But very glad you enjoyed it!

I unfortunately picked up a shift tonight at work so no beer for me. But working on notes to send you about the beers from the NE.

Our little tour of the Washington beer universe continues with a stop in picturesque White Salmon. Located across the mighty Columbia river from Hood River, OR, White Salmon has a stunning view of Mt. Hood. I suggest stopping by the brewery and having a pint while enjoying that view. The brewery in question is Everybody's Brewing, and this is a nice, basic Pale Ale: https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/20679/338674/

Incredible milkshake sour! Awesome head retention/lacing for a sour. Awesome ruby/purple color. Aromas and flavors of huge juicy/tart/tangy blackberry, raspberry, fruit skin/seeds, lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, peach, pear, red/green apple, melon, red grape/wine, hay, straw, and grass; with moderate vanilla, cream, wheat, cracker, white bread malts; light pepper, lacto funk, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tart/sourness, fruit tang, and light spiciness on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; very creamy/silky/grainy malts/lactose; some lactic acid, and fruit tang/tannins in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing acidic/tangy/tannic dryness, no pucker. Very smooth, pretty refreshing, not overly lactic, 6%. Huge fan of this stuff. Super jammy berries; with balanced Lacto complexity, and lactose/pale/wheat malts against acidity. Superb style execution. 4.28

Outstanding sour saison. Solid head retention, minimal lacing. Aromas and flavors of big sour/tart/tangy concord grapes, fruit skin, lemon, lime, orange, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, red/green apple, melon, berries, red wine, oak, peppercorn, hay, straw, herbal, floral, and grass; with moderate wheat, cracker, lightly toasted biscuit malts; light leathery/musty/lacto funk, and yeast earthiness. Moderate peppery yeast spiciness; light-moderate fruity/lactic tartness, and fruit tang on the finish. Medium-high carbonation, light-medium body, and moderately crisp/clean finishing. Balanced bready/grainy malts, sticky hops, lactic acid, fruit tang, and oak tannins in the mouthfeel. Moderate increasing spicy/tart/carbonated dryness, no pucker/astringency. Refreshingly smooth, not overly lactic, 6.8%. Spot on stuff. Very well rounded Brett/Bacteria/Saison yeast complexity; nice wine barrel presence, and pale/wheat malt backbone. 4.15

Lets go for two here. At least.
Why not my first New Mexico beer?
La Cumbre Elevated India Pale Ale
Pours a crystal clear copper color with an off white head of about 3/4" that lasts for a few and leaves spotty lacing. Watching the bubbles rise and the clarity is really a beautiful pour.
Smell is sweet tangerine, pineapple, lemon oil, pine and some grapefruit. Aroma is powerful and really enjoyable.
Taste is a light caramel malt base highlighted by sweet citrus, some tropical notes and fine grapefruit and slighty bitter pine.....and it lasts slightly coating the tongue with some oily fresh hop notes. Flavor is bold and full. Yum Yum.
Feel medium carbonation is spot on and the finish is semi dry with that wonderful slickness.
Awesome brew. A "midwest" type IPA is what comes to mind. It feels like a cross between Bells Two Hearted and Jai Alai - but not as "tropical" as the latter. Thanks @Dwood1466! [IMG]

Boulevard Whiskey Barrel Aged stout pours a very dark brown with a tan head that fades to ring. Aroma is very boozy upfront, vanilla, cocoa, roasted malt and some char come thru. Flavors are similar. I thought it was a bit thin for the style, and I thought it was a bit "too hot". I was surprised to see a best by date of 11/07/18. I'll throw 2 in crawl space till spring and see what happens. Cheers!

    New Beers Sunday

Happy NBS everyone! These first 3 brews were from my buddy @Brutaltruth and I have to say it was a great time hanging out with him and his little lady recently! I was lucky enough to meet them and go to some of my hangouts here around Columbus, and we hit up some new places too. No lie, it was probably one of the funnest days I've had in a while! Well, enough about that, here's my new brews for today:

Vigorous pour yields a 1/4 inch light pink head over a dark pink body with no lacing. Head is gone in a minute. Great nose of sour cherry and oak. Taste mirrors nose very nicely with a dry, tart finish of sour cherry. Good feel for the style and overall, the finish on this is near spectacular and would highly recommend this. Cheers!

    New Altbier Sunday:
    Altstadt Alt (4.8% ABV)

The flavor intensity is tame, about a 5 out of 10, but it's a good 5 — like a light dubbel with that dusty yeasty peach/fruitcake and a bit of date or prune. The aroma is stronger and sweeter. There's almost no hop presence, just a hint of balancing earthiness in the aftertaste.

    The review:
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/49210/338476/?ba=Premo88#review

    4.1 (+9.3% rDev)

Altstadt makes only three beers, but their kolsch, pils and this alt are very good and could stack up with Live Oak's top three.

    Cheers!
