We just spent the last four days with company. My sister, brother-in-law, and daughter visited from Florida, and we had a fantastic time. I want to talk a little bit about my brother-in-law. I’ve known Dick for over 50 years; we went to college together. I couldn’t have asked for a better friend. We share many of the same interests, and he has been a fun guy to be around. He has been a wonderful husband to my little sister.

About a year and a half ago, Dick started having some left-sided weakness. Like many of us, he decided to ignore it and hoped it would go away. Well, it didn’t and by Thanksgiving 2017 it was worsening. He went to his doctor, who ordered a bunch of tests, including imaging of his brain. All this time Dick felt well, and he was thinking maybe he had had a stroke. The brain MRI showed a tumor in his brainstem, and a biopsy showed it to be a Stage 4 glioblastoma. Radiation and chemotherapy were recommended, and he was told he had 9-18 months to live. I can only imagine how devastating this news must have been.

Dick has undergone radiation and several courses of chemotherapy. His latest MRI has shown a 30% reduction in the size of the tumor and he is defying the odds by still being alive. He continues to have a weak left side, so is wheelchair bound, but he is getting stronger and, with the help of a walker, can ambulate about 20 feet. Throughout this ordeal Dick has been courageous and always optimistic.

Today, when you open your new beer, give a toast to my brother-in-law Dick. Tell me how the beer looks, how does it smell, how does it taste, and how does it feel in your mouth. Then give your overall impression.

Just finalized my review of this when I noticed the thread was open. Cheers to @lordofthewiens for opening up this weekly tribute to beer. Cheers to Dick and all others fighting cancer. It's a scary thing. Fortunately in this case, it sounds like he is both showing progress and surrounded by loved ones. That's two big wins.

My contribution for now features coffee, and as a spoiler, all of it's ingredients are 'single origin' sourced from Africa. I share my thoughts on this later in my official review.

4 Hand's Single Origin Imperial Stout.

Pours black with a finger of khaki foam. Head retention is poor. Aroma is roasty, toasty, nutty, caramel malts with vanilla bean, blueberry, chocolate, and medium-roast coffee. The transitions between malt and additive are smooth, blending and balancing well. Flavor profile is blueberry, vanilla bean, caramel, toffee, medium-roast coffee and milk chocolate with roasty and toasty malts underneath. It's blended together well, with sweet vanilla bean and blueberry notes lingering a while. The majority of the flavor profile is balanced, with the lingering notes leaning towards the sweet side. Mouth feel is smooth and borders on a light creaminess. It has a medium-thick consistency. Overall, a solid stout with good additive flavors. Blueberry and vanilla bean play well with the coffee and vice-versa. Sweetness falls somewhere between a dessert stout and a regular stout.

Disappointed that the name implies just 'single origin' coffee usage. Although it does use single origin coffee (Ethiopian) the label goes on to say the other flavor additives are from the same continent as well, detracting from the coffee definition of 'single origin'. This disappointment has not been reflected in scoring, but is noted for future reference.

    Score: 3.5 | 4.25 | 4.25 | 4 | 4 | BA Score: 4.13 | rDev: -2.8%

As I have previously noted, I wasn't aware this stout featured vanilla beans and blueberries added. Had I known this, I may have passed on it. Thankfully, this was well created despite these sugary, dessert additions.

    Cheers.

Oh crap one hell of a way to start, but thanks for sharing. ! I feel for you, your sister and Dick. May the journey be as easy as possible for Dick and all those connected to him. He has good folks around him and for that he is lucky.

Only a month old but not too hot out the gate. Some rum barrel beers like The Abyss and Barrel Runner have been. Nose is burnt sugar, rum ethanol, caramel, chocolate and smoke. Taste is more of the same. Medium body a bit thin for the style but not disappointingly so. Best Squatters brew I’ve had so far. Cheers NBSers. Checking out season 2 of The Punisher this evening.

These two are lounging now while the wife is watching Parks and Rec in the bedroom so I’m not drinking alone.

    Happy NBS BAs!

Today's new beer is one from Tired Hands brewing called Eviscerated Pathway of Beauty.

It is single hopped with Citra and features a ton of Oats. They call it a Cira Oat DIPA.

Clocking in a 8.6% this is not for the faint of heart.

The combination of citra, their house yeast and Oats bring about a topical fruit smoothie like experience that would exceed much higher if not for the fact this there is a slight astringent character to the beer that is minimal but noticeable.

Personally this is an outstanding and very fresh DIPA by Tired hands that brings about a shocking array of complexity for being single hopped.

Totally worthy of your time and pallet!

    Cheers!

    Happy NBS again!

Next runner up was canned 01 14 19 and features a crap ton of hops, so I figured I just copy and paste them here:
"Brewed in the kettle with Topaz, Enigma and Simcoe Cryo and double dry hopped with Mosaic, Mosaic Cryo, Cashmere, Topaz and Enigma. "
Compared to the tired hands I had earlier this one is much more earthy and herbal with slight notes of fruit but manly in the form of lemon grass.

I gotta give Magnify some credit because it's not a total juice bomb. There is still plenty of bitterness and roughness to the brew which I really like along with those earthy and dank notes of the hops. Strong brew but it helps to add some body to the beer.

This is a very solid offering from magnify!

    Cheers!

Happy Picking Up Where I Left Off During The Last New Beer Sundays (Week 726)!

First off, my heartfelt sympathies to Dick. My prostate CANcer is merely Stage 1 & my doc says that the prognosis is good following the pesky prostate's removal in mid-June. Nothing hurts & I remain upbeat, much like my late Pops. I CAN imagine telling jokes & making puns right up until the end, whenever that may be. I have decided to be like SOA's Wayne Unser, though, & get a scrip for everything under the sun. It was shocking, even for me, to watch a sheriff openly toking on a joint. If I'm going out, I want to be as hosed up as a lab rat in so doing!

Enough about that. I remain CANmitted & I should be CANmitted as a result, to CANs! I beCAN last week with the best of intentions & then my computer decided to perform an update that threw my best-laid plans into a deathly tailspin, to mix metaphors & allusions. Man, I had NO idea just how well-versed I have become in grammar until Monday Night Trivia a week or two ago! I blew just one question & schooled my teammates on how the answers were derived.

At any rate, two weeks ago was all SingleCut & last week was beers from @jkblr until things went south.

Wow! Did I really only get one (1) in?!? F**king computer! Some catch-up action:

Here's to a better today following a lie-down to regroup before really diving back in. @jkblr sent me some great stuff from Taxman, excluding a CANsulty 8=( , and I am super-stoked to Crack! & Glug some CANs with yinz today. Again, following a wrestling match with the rack in which I hope that the rack wins!

Cheers to Dick. I have a coworker who was having stomach pains, I pushed him to go to the doc, it could be appendicitis I urged. Nope, cancer. So here's to my friend Barney as well.
I'm drinking weldwerks triple double. The beer pours a hazy straw color, not murky though, a one inch bone white head recedes back to a consistent quarter inch layer of tight knit bubbles. Aroma is all peaches, grapefruit, and mango. Flavor is bitter dank goodness followed by grapefruit pith and stone fruit. A good beer, but consistantly with my experience with the neipa style. They all kinda taste the same anymore, and I'm about over hop burn.
All that aside, I hope for the best for everyone out there. This life is hard enough without a doctor pissing in your ear about your mortality, and my hat is off to anyone fighting against cancer or any other disease for that matter.

Morning all. Well, out to do battle with the white mess that fell from the sky last night, and continues to fall, now in liquid form that freezes on top of it all. Gonna try to get to work. Yes, work. Filling in for the man who replaced me, Rich, who decided to retire. He said his kidney needs to come out whether the biopsy results come back malignant or not. I like Rich a lot, and hopefully while we think of Dick battling we can pass some hope through the humanisphere to Rich also. He is an old man with the unlikely responsibility of taking care of a disabled son and I am praying the results, due Thursday, come back benign, and he gets to live many, many more years.

Gonna be thirsty for sure when I get back from work today. Told the Town Supervisor to look for a new guy and I will fill in for Rich until no later than the third week of April or beginning of mushroom season, whichever comes first. Hope I make it, yesterday was busy and I was huffing and puffing. Glad to be back to enjoying beer, because curing the results of a day of hard work is what beer does best. See y'all in a bit.

I'll drink to Dick today. It's 9 years this spring that a glioblastoma took my new beer sampling partner and father. Your description of your friend and brother in law sounds a lot like my Dad. Brave and upbeat throughout his ordeal, more concerned with our feelings than his. You've got me crying in my coffee this morning while I wait for my family to wake up. Strange as it may sound, thank you.

Good morning NBS and yes, this beer and short review is dedicated to Dick and anyone struggling with the asshole known as cancer.

Life is good here. The new year is already 20 days away and time flies faster than ever, one of the problem with getting older although it’s all relative for 34 year old Shanex...

Just got back from the mall where I purchased a new beer from a well known brewery and « project »: Grosse Bertha from Brussels beer project...

It’s a German Hefeweizen. 330ml at 7%. Quite ambitious from a Belgian brewery to dip its toes into a well known and widely appreciated German style.

Poured into a teku, leaving a 2 inches white head, color is cloudy yellow...

    Smells citrus, lemon...

Taste follow the nose (big smile). Some hints of banana, and a clovey finish which is distinct of many Belgian beers.

Overall : it’s a good beer, but nowhere as exceptional as the German Hefeweizen we drink preferably during spring and summer after a rough day. I had to give it a try.

    Cheers

    Here's to Dick.

16oz can dated 10/23/18 enjoyed from a rocks glass pours a squid ink black capped by a 1/2in chestnut brown head of tiny bubbles that dissipates to a collar. Agitation produces sheets of lacing that leaves the glass naked as it races back to the collar.

Aromas include tobacco, char, whiskey, chocolate, vanilla, and leather and the flavors match.

Mouthfeel leans thin but a residual whiskey adds lip-smacking deliciousness and slight booze warmth.

Overall, a straightforward barrel aged stout. Thanks to @cjgiant for this fine sipper.

My contribution for the morning and if the weather doesn't improve I'll probably be in beer discovery throughout the day . . .

Beautiful clear amber gold color with large white cap and good lacing.

Aroma of sweet malt and something spicy like coriander.

Taste is full on rich malt with hops equally as full. These are not strong hops of the citrus variety, rather they have a gentle fullness without bitterness. I do get what I'll call Belgian influences by mid palate, some spicy breadiness that is more mindful of allspice than the usual clove/coriander combination. There's also an absence of banana though I do get a bit of ripe fruit. Complex flavors well combined.

    Full texture with balancing carbonation.

Altogether a rich, complex, heady brew that neatly combines the elements of both Belgian and IPA without either style dominating.

New Beer Sunday: American Pale Ale (APA)

Mornin’ NBSers with a special thanks to @lordofthewiens both for the start up and for reminding us that what counts in this life and how you live it, is the respect and caring we have for others (and sometimes the compassion and love), especially when their future looks dark.

The weather here today is wet and drizzly with overcast skies. The temp is currently in the mid 40s and expected to climb into the low 50s before it comes crashing down to single digits tonight. We’ve been on the edge of this latest storm to work its way across the US but it did leave us with lots of rain.

This morning’s new beer is from Dogfish Head and is from there recently released bottling of their American Beauty Ale. This APA hasn’t been brewed for a while and it’s recent release was in 12 oz bottles, which for some of us is a preferred serving size.

As usual, my review, subject to revision until the beer is finished, can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/64/101085/?ba=drtth#review

While the aromas are full of grainy toasty malt and some fruits (e.g., orange, mango) they also show off a good bit of pine resin and some floral character. In the flavors, however, the grainy, bready character and some honey-like sweetness are more forward than expected. In addition to the fruits there’s a background showing citric zest and some pine resin along with some floral and earthy character. A nice, clean, crisp, enjoyable and drinkable beer that I expect to repeat while it’s still available fresh in the 12 oz bottles.

    Cheers, all!

Good morning New BSers! Thanks, @lordofthewiens, for opening today's thread. I'm sorry to hear about your brother-in-law and friend, Dick. Glioblastomas are pretty damn nasty, not that any cancer is pleasant. To Dick:

    Received from @zid. Thanks Chris!
“Best before 26 12 19” on label. Standard European 11.2 oz bottle. Stored at 42 degrees and served at 54 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Reviewed 1/20/19.
    Appearance – 3.
Body – Dark brown/black, opaque. When held to the light, still opaque but with slight penetration at the rim.
Head – Large (Maximum 6.2 cm, aggressive center pour), low density and rocky, brown, average retention, diminishing to a three mm ring and a thin, rocky, partial layer.
    Lacing – None.
First pour – Dark brown, clear.
Aroma – 4 - Chocolate and roasted malt – average strength, lasts.
Flavor – 3.5 - Begins with bitter chocolate - not much else can be detected through the fizziness. It ends with bitter chocolate with a long hang-time. No alcohol (7.8% ABV), no diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide.
    Palate – 3 - Thin, watery, fizzy.
Impression and interpretation - 3.5 – A thin, fizzy, bitter chocolate drink. As it warms above 60 degrees, the fizziness drops and the alcohol becomes apparent. One and done.
    Rating 3.54, rDev -13.4%.

Well. The bitter chocolate was no surprise since there is what appears to be a withered cocoa pod on the label. The aggressive carbonation was overwhelming, wiping out any taste other than the chocolate, even roasted malt couldn't be detected. If you're going to try one of these, I'd pour it into a glass and let it sit for an hour before drinking.

Well,it's apparently stopped snowing and I'll be heading out with my snow blower to see if I can find my driveway. Mrs. Lizard and her quilting coven are out in the woods for a retreat and I'm going to attempt to bring her home about 1300. Of course the location is up in the snow belt, so fun and games!

    Beer: Griddle Imperial Espresso Stout

    ABV: 10%
    [IMG]
Pouring this beer from a 12 oz. can into the center of a whiskey glass, it pours out like coffee. Dark brown with some highlights and forms a thin layer of caramel colored crown that dissipates quickly. 4

The smell brings a coffee/espresso dominance with roastiness, followed by layers of sweetness like caramel, chocolate, vanilla and even some slight maple. 4.25

The taste follows the nose well. It comes in with that roasty, bitter, astringent coffee. Melds into sweetness of lactose sugar for almost a creamer presence. Chocolate is still there, along with caramel as well. 4.25

The mouthfeel is creamy with some bitter/acidic astringency, but really not sharply so. Well carbonated, not leaving it feel flat. Medium bodied, while coating the mouth with flavor, it doesn’t feel like fudge. 4.25

Overall, this is a well made and balanced brew. Different aspects and layers of the coffee mixing with the layers of sweetness as well, with a creamy mouthfeel all work together to lead to an enjoyable drinker. 4.25

    Thanks Mike!

I’ll be back with atleast one more before the day is done, maybe two. Idk. Until then, I’ll be excited to see what you bring to the share!
