Very nice Baltic Porter. Great rocky head retention/soapy lacing. Flavors of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, and dark/brown bread/crusts; with lighter notes of toffee, smoke, charcoal, anise, dark fruits, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, pepper, and pine. Similar/muted aromas, touch too fruity/yeasty. Light-moderate pine, herbal, grassy, peppery hop; and roast/chacoal bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; very creamy, silky, bready, grainy malts; light sticky hops, and chalky char/roast in the mouthfeel. Lightly increasing lingering hop/char bitter dryness; no cloying, acrid, astringency. Super smooth, minimal warming 8.5%. Very clean lager flavors, not overly fruity/yeasty. Very clean, rich, and well rounded dark/roast/bready malt complexity, balancing earthy hops, and mild fruity yeast character. Spot on stuff for the style. 3.88

2012 Michael from Hair of the Dog. This was an amazing gift from @Lingenbrau. This is a barrel-aged Flanders ale. Poured from fridge temp. No sound when cracking the cap - not a surprise given the brewery. Almost no head. Pours a gorgeous dark reddish/brown. The nose is incredible. Sour/tart cherries is dominant. Some funk, and a bit of leather is mixed in. Also picking up peaches, red grape skin, and wood. This is just a beer that I could sniff for an hour before taking a sip. The taste is not 100% what I was expecting from the nose, but equally awesome. Smooth, with a good amount of raisin, cherries, wood chips, leather, tree sap, and maybe a slight hint of tobacco. The complete lack of carbonation actually fits really nicely with the flavors. The aftertaste is slight bitter, but nice and fruity. The mouthfeel is slightly dry, but a really nice refreshing flavor coats the mouth. Overall, this is one of the more unique beers that I have tried, which isn't surprising since this is from HotD. Definitely an awesome experience.

Last new beer of the night. Probably.
Been a longtime want for me.

12 ounce bottle dated 24Jan19. Poured into tulip. Pours a dark, dark brown. I don’t want to call it black. Latte colored head. Spotty lacing, small ring around the glass.
Huge aromas of dark chocolate, roast, burnt marshmallow, vanilla. Decadent really.
I could say the same about its flavors as the nose. Dark chocolate, marshmallow fluff, char, mellow vanilla, hints of coffee and cocoa powder at the finish. The vanilla really shines here for me.
The body feels a little thin for the style and abv but even with the lighter body, it feels silky smooth. Not cloying or too sweet. The beer offers a dry and chalky finish.
I’m glad to finally be able to tick this beer. It won’t be a once and done. Really delivers the flavors described on the bottle.

Next, and my first chance to really sit down and have a proper NBS post: Old Rasputin XXI (bourbon barrels).

Head production is a little crazy, honestly. Huge, frothy tan head, with incredible retention.

Nose and palate both feature everything you could want from this style: huge roasty notes throughout, of char, burnt coffee, bitter chocolate, red grapes, brown sugar, and toffee, all blending with massive bourbon notes, oak, coconut, and vanilla. Profile blends together, rather than coming in discrete waves.

It's been a while since I've had one of the Old Raspy anniversary brews, and accordingly, a while since I've had a beer so unabashedly old school as a BBA RIS. This absolutely nails it, and I couldn't ask for a more perfectly executed brew - even if it isn't precisely my cup of tea.

    Canned 1-10-19 into silhouette glass.
    L: Hazy orange. Off-white head, semi-sticky lacing.
S: Fresh citrus and tropical hops. Pine hides in the background.. waiting.
T: Lots of juicy citrus and tropical flavors. Earthy.
F: Carbonated, yet bubbly smooth. Bitterness is muted. It's watery.. but it's also full bodied. Yea, I'm confused.
O: My 1st taste of any Three's Brewing. I'm impressed with the flavors, the MF and overall profile.

That’s one of those beers I’ve never had where I ask myself if bourbon barrel aging it could possibly make me enjoy the base beer more than I already do.

    Nice review.

I suppose at some point I should I just pull the trigger. Don’t see it often though.

    Hello fellow NBSrs!

First and foremost a huge thank you to @FlintB for this treat!

Sharing with the mrs so I’m only working with half a pour here.

    It’s smooth and rich.

Decadent raisin/plum/dark fruit. Smooth barrel integration and a touch of creamy vanilla.

I really enjoyed the “base” bb4d but the addition of vanilla cranks this up a notch. Even handed the addition is as it adds to the base and not detracts from it.

This beer is extremely well done and wish it had come in a larger format to be honest.

Cheers all ! And hope your Sunday is treating you all well.

    Thanks again Brian!

Good evening, all! Bit of a late start today. I woke up to another six or seven inches of snow on top of the metric crapload we already had. Is it too early to be winter-weary? We still have more than a month left until spring, and I'm running out of places to put all this snow. At least the plow never showed up this morning, so I threw it all into the street when I finally got around to shoveling today. It'll get moved eventually. Meanwhile, I think I've earned an IPA. (Of course.) This is Blurr, brewed by SingleSpeed Brewing in Waterloo, Iowa. These folks never cease to amaze. Solid all the way through the lineup, which includes a lot of experimental-type offerings. Case in point: the Nimble Series, which they refer to as "A Bio-Transformation Project."
Blurr is Effort 003 in the series. From the brewer's notes:
This has everything I look for in an IPA: beautiful appearance, tropical and piney hops, good body, decent head retention, understated sweetness, a crisp finish, and plenty of bitterness at 54 IBU. The combination of two-row malt, golden naked oat, and flaked barley provides a nice structure for the big hoppy profile. Rating: 4.53/5 (look: 5 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5)

Good evening NBSers. Kids are sent to bed, fights are on TV, I don't have to work tomorrow, and the beer is poured.

Tonight I'm having Composition 3 from HOMES. This is a blend of golden sours aged in tequila barrels then refermented on blackcurrants and lime zest.

It pours a beautiful ruby red with a foamy pink head that exhibits incredible retention. The nose is crisp funk that quickly moves into berries. Full but soft mouthfeel. A ton happening on the palate: juicy berries cut with lime rind, plenty of barrel and a barnyard funk that creeps in late and lasts into the semi-tart finish. Really nice palatte of flavors, everything works together and nothing dominates.

New beer #2 - Matryoshka from Fort George. A bourbon barrel-aged RIS. Poured from fridge temp. Pours motor oil black with a nice light brown head. Nose is chocolate, lactose, some roasted malts, and a bit of vanilla. Taste is super smooth like chocolate milk. Definitely a bunch of chocolate and milk, along with some bourbon and dark fruit. The bourbon is not dominant at all. A bit of black licorice and nuts as well. Maybe a bit of graham cracker mixed in. This is a fantastic BA stout that is super smooth. The mouthfeel is super creamy and viscous. This is a great stout from Fort George. Cheers!

Just last month I had Westbrook's 8th Anniversary Pecan Cookie stout and realized that I had the 4th, 5th, and 6th editions, but missed the 7th... Well, fixing that right now, as one of my local shops still had some on hand...
    12/6/17 bottling date...

Black pour and black-bodied, with a few fingers of dark foam on top... Packs a big chocolate syrup and marshmallow punch - the salt just makes it taste sweeter and fudgier... Additional notes of molasses and vanilla make this a sweet stout with little to no bitterness... Full-bodied and soft, smooth and plush... A real liquid chocolate treat...
As with the others in the series, I have been consistently pleased...

That's it for me here, NBS, see ya in seven...

It's totally worth it for a special occasion, or to share. I wouldn't grab a bunch of them, not at the price point. However, like you mentioned: yeah, they take a classic, all-world beer and really do it justice with the barrel aging, so it's worth a go.

    Toppling Goliath - Pseudo Sue

My third and final Toppling Goliath beer for NBS. This beer has more in common with a NEIPA than it does with SNPA. This beer is an opaque, dull and murky yellow. Very nice head. Full bodied for what it is. A bit prickly. Tastes very fruity without verging into rotting fruit territory. Slightly chalky. Subdued mango and guava with a little grapefruit. This is a bit sweet with a lightly bitter finish. This beer feels the most cohesive out of the three and the one that invites repeat visits. There's been a signature unifying character throughout the group - in flavor profile and volume, drinkability, appearance, and carbonation.

Back for number 3 today. Quite a rarity for me!

I think I’ve stuck to local beers to this point in my short NBS history. I do a fair amount of trading though and probably drink as much non-local and foreign beer as I do local.

This last one for the night is an extra can thrown into a recent trade. Big Ditch Make Me Wanna Stout coffee and cream stout.

Deep, opaque black with a creamy latte head that dissipates to nothing after several minutes.

Coffee up front in the nose. A little charred malt follows up the coffee.

Taste reflects aroma. Creamy coffee, brown sugar and a slight smokiness rounds out the flavours. The sweetness is increasingly noticeable as the glass is consumed.

Thick and creamy up front but finishes fairly quickly.

Quite nice if one likes a sweeter coffee stout. I’m glad this is in a short can as I think the sweetness would become a challenge with too much more. 4.14.

    Cheers!
