    Hello New Beer Sunday!!!

Another long work week done.... I'm sounding like a broken record typing that. That being said, a new record is going on - I will be getting a day off work this coming week. I'll be headed to the Bismarck, ND area to do some ice fishing, and can't tell you all how excited I am to get away from work. Hopefully I'll be able to get some new beers in while there. Too bad Laughing Sun is closed on Monday, or a stop there would happen on the way there. Maybe we can go there Tuesday, after fishing.

    We'll see.

But, it's time for the beer.

Gorm The Old from Hammerheart Brewing.

I have only had 2 Old Ales before this, and I rated below average. Will this one be any different?

    No.

I guess I just don't dig the style much, or at least so far from trying it. There's just not much there. The flavors are not very strong, and the body is a bit watery, in my book.

It pours a nice pitch black color. I wasn't trying to be aggressive, but the head was 4 finger, and there's still some in the bottle. As the head dissipates, I'm pouring more in. The head is a nice tan color, and the retention is good. It looks like the head is bubbling and boiling as it dissipates. There's minimal lacing as it dissipates.
The nose is fairly minimal. There's some smoke to it, which is what this brewery is known for. The smoke is minimal, but there. I'm getting little beyond it.
Taste - Smoke up front, that turns a bit mellow for a moment, I do get some malt sweetness, that comes on after the initial smoke, and they merge together to form a smoky sweet flavor. I also get notes of coffee, and some caramel. The smoke lingers throughout.
Somewhat watery feeling. There's a bit of carbonation on my palate.
This is my 3rd Old Ale, and again, I'm just not digging this style. I love smoked beers, but just not head over heals over this beer.

I don't think I'll have anything else tonight. See you all next week. Cheers.

Awesome American Amber. Fantastic lasting rocky head retention/thick foamy lacing. Crystal clarity. Aromas and flavors of big red grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, mango, honeydew melon, wood, citrus peel/rind, peppercorn, and pine hops; with moderate caramel, brown sugar, brown bread dough/crust, toasted biscuit, roasted nuts, and light toffee malts; with herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, woody, floral, grassy, peppery hops; and light roasted bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation/body; balanced creamy/bready malts, sticky hops, some resins/rinds, and light chalky roast in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing bitter dryness, no hop astringency. Very smooth, no warmth of 5.8%. Awesome Simcoe/Cascade profile. Very juicy, vibrant, and fairly dank/earthy hop complexity; with a great clean and rich balanced malt backbone. Mild residual sweetness with lingering resin dryness. Very hoppy, but still meets the style. Will try to find this again, not in MI yet. 4.13

    Cheers, man!

I was disappointed to read about your negative triple barrel experience this morning. I never had that beer, but was comparing it to my experience with quadruple barrel, which I thought was amazing. I was happy to read your positive review of that one and that you had a more enjoyable experience with it.

    12 oz. bottle.
10% abv as per bottle's label.
(Formerly known as James Bean, I was told.)
Moderate pour yields a 1/4 inch white head over a slightly hazy light amber body with sticky lacing. Nose of coffee, vanilla, slight caramel, and even slighter bourbon. Taste follows nose very closely with a real nice mouthfeel and finish of vanilla and slight coffee. Sweeter than I expected, but that's more than okay. I would definitely recommend this to anyone. Cheers to Allagash for another winner!

First review as expected. Amazing BSPA. Amazing lasting fluffy head retention/thick foamy lacing the whole glass. Aromas and flavors of big lemon, orange, peach, pear, apricot, melon, red apple, white grape/wine, fruit skin, peppercorn, clove, and light banana/bubblegum yeast; with moderate candi sugar, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, lightly toasted biscuit, light honeyed malts; herbal, floral, woody, grassy hops, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate peppery yeast spiciness; herbal, floral, grassy bitterness; and light grape tang/tartness on the finish. High carbonation, medium-plus body, and fairly crisp/clean finishing. Balanced Creamy/bready/grainy malts, sticky hops, and light fruit tang/acids in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing bitter/spicy/carbonated dryness; no cloying/astringency. Dangerously smooth, mild increasing warmth of 9.5%. Once again they nailed this one out of the park, perfect example of the style. I love their Belgian house yeast. Amazingly well rounded house Belgian yeast and wine grape juice complexity; with balanced sugars, pale/wheat malts, and earthy hops. Mild residual sweetness with crisp dryness. Very well attenuated for the ABV. Wow. 4.31

Good evening, all! Late to the party, as usual. It was a bit chilly in the Cedar Valley today, but the grillin' must go on. New York strip and bacon-wrapped asparagus, with a side of saffron rice. As you can see, presentation isn't always everything. Sometimes you gotta just slap it on the plate. There wasn't a lot of daylight left by the time I got done with this, and it's been a while since I've photographed a beer outdoors. So first a quick supper...

...and then the beer. This is All Cats Are Gray In The Dark, from Fat Orange Cat. The brewer calls this a white stout. It's quite pretty in the glass. It pours a crystal-clear deep amber, with a very aggressive pour yielding a couple of fingers of off-white head that left an insane amount of lacing. Big aromas and flavors of vanilla, chocolate, and coffee, with roasted malt and lots of hop bitterness. Good carbonation, medium mouthfeel, no char, and a moderately dry finish. This is not your grandfather's stout, but it's delicious - if you like cream soda. And I do. :yum:

Hello Not So Late Night NBS
I've had a nice week. For the first time ever, I went to some March Madness games. Watched Gonzaga and FSU battle it out. Then saw Michigan fold to Texas Tech. Then yesterday, saw a sad way to go out for Gonzaga, but respect the hell outta Texas Tech's defense. Sad way for Gonzaga to go out with a technical foul on an inbound. Got to meet Jamal Wilkes and Michael Cooper, both Laker legends from my younger years. Got to share these experiences with my brother and my dad. Really made for a great week.
Now I'm trying to figure out a blind tasting, courtesy of a @foundersasap

I am a little baffled by this one.
It's a garnet tinged amber color. Light sandy head that rises a finger or so, loosens up, and quickly recedes. (I'm assuming it would have a little more head retention had I opened earlier).
    Really pretty color.
Smells of rye, some earthy hops, and a hint of caramel malt.
Taste is rye, buckwheat, a tad of pine resin, with a gentle almost floral honey note. Also a smooth pepper note peeks in.
Mouthfeel is slightly less than medium. Low carbonation. Finish is a tad slick.
Overall, I'm guessing a rye IPA, or a Amber ale with some rye in the mix.
    So what is it?

Wow - great label for the Hitchcock fans and a nice tie in for Russian River. That's a reference to the arrival of Uncle Charlie to Santa Rosa by train in Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt.

Managed to make a stop at my favorite local brewery to pick up some bottles from this weekend's release.

Pours a slightly cloudy apricot color with a thin head that settled pretty quickly.
Peach on the nose, slight funk, light barrel, earthy.
Taste follows, lots of fleshy peach, some funk, light wine and oak from the barrel, slight tartness.
Medium body, good carb levels, dry finish.
Overall a well balanced peach sour, the sweet peach balances the tartness, funk and barrel are present but not overbearing.
