Good morning, NBS crew. For those of you sports fans who follow along, you could probably predict that I would at least mention that it is exciting for me that UVa's gained entry into the NCAA Championship game. Last night's game had some good and bad play on both sides, with some interesting calls and non-calls throughout, but in the end, the Cavaliers will get a whole new experience by being in college hoops' national championship game for the first time.

Speaking of first times, do you have a beer in your fridge with which you are awaiting your first experience? Feeling like you might want to crack it open today? If so, you're half the way towards being a valued participant to this thread. Granted, that's the easy part. The other component of participation is telling us about your introductory experience with the beer as you drink it.

Yes, we like to hear (read) about you thoughts on the look, smell, taste, and feel of the beer - not necessarily in that order or that structured, but feel free to use that template. We're looking for some solid info beyond just a number that might help us decide whether to purchase the beer or not should we come across it. And if you aren't prepared to participate today, feel free to read along and maybe respectfully chime in with your thoughts on the beers others are trying today. Hopefully you can join next week's thread with a beer of your own.

Well, I got to a new brewery yesterday and tried/reviewed a couple new beers from them. A trip to the beer store to stock up for the game also netted a few new beers, one with which I hope to include in a side-by-side tasting later. I also might find time for a celebratory brew I've been neglecting for months. How about you? What new beer experience do you have for us today? Hope there's no controversy and it turns out to be a winning brew.

Dogdish Head Raison D’Extra, 15% ABV. Pours cloudy dark brown with a half finger off-white head. Nose is malt and dark fruit. Taste is brown sugar and raisin, slightly sweet and moderately bitter. Flavor improved quite a bit as it reached room temperature. Excellent mouthfeel. Overall excellent, though to me taste is only slightly better than plain Raison D’Etre, though it is almost twice as strong.

New Beer Sunday: Fruit and Field Beer

Mornin’ NBSers and with a suggestion for fans of Cherry Blossom season. Thanks to @cjgiant for his start up and I have to agree with his assessment that last night’s game had some odd moments, but I have to admit it was also very exciting to see a team win by one point when a player ends the game by scoring 3 out of 3 foul shots in a row. The guy looked to me to be as calm and poised as if it was just a casual Sunday pick-up game. Be interesting to watch UVa and Texas Tech in the upcoming final game.

Today’s weather is going to be nice. Lots of sun broken by a few clouds and a high temperature at about 70.

This morning’s new beer is the Cherry Blossom Lager from Fordham & Dominion who are located in Dover, DE.

My review, subject to revision until the beer is finished or breakfast is ready, can be found here.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/402/90806/?ba=drtth#review

This beer lives up to it’s name in that the aromas/flavors of this beer are filled with light sweet cherry. There’s also some bready malt and some light floral character in the background. The sweetness-bitterness balance is well controlled and the hop flavors complement and do not interfere with the cherry. I thought this one was reasonable drinkable and enjoyable. (Also, while I'm not exactly sure, I also have a suspicion that to get the Cherry Blossom-like floral character you need to find this spring seasonal when it is fresh.)

    Cheers, all!

Edit: While taking a quick look at the beer's web page the distribution of scores caught my eye. Although I haven't done any comparison with the distributions for some other beers, I suspect this is a beer that people have a wide range of views on. The distribution of scores seems quite wide/spread out with a fair number of scores across the full range.

Morning all and cheers to @cjgiant for that opening and congrats on your Hoos winning! Full disclosure, I drank this beer last night, so sue me. On to the beer:

Origin of darkness a collab between Collective Arts and Donut Monster Donut Shop

The pour is pitch black and viscous and you can tell it’s super thick. Maybe half a finger of espresso colored head which doesn’t last. Initially the aroma is all bourbon. If you’re persistent however, coconut and vanilla peek out when it warms a little and it begins to smell sweet. Taste is chocolate- all kinds, by the barrel load- vanilla, coconut, little coffee. It’s sweet, but not overly so for me, but I assume when you collab with a donut company that’s kinda the goal. There is some chocolate cake donut flavor (I made donuts through college) that shows up before some warming bourbon flavor at the end. The finish is dominated again by chocolate. Mouthfeel is thiccccc and chewy. Overall this is fantastic, 10/10 would buy again. Haven’t checked it in yet on BA but I’m guessing I’m in the 4.6 range.

Barrel Aged Drakonic from Drakes, ordered from Tavour and enjoyed (mildly) after midnight. Pours a very dark brown, not quite black with a thin ring of tan head that left no lacing. Smell is rather mild with some notes of roasted malts, bourbon and chocolate. Tastes of roasted malts, dark chocolate, medium roast coffee, vanilla, bourbon, burnt brown sugar, tobacco and a bit of char. Medium bodied for the style, minimal carbonation, just shy of creamy mouth feel, slightly dry finish. Overall, a non-remarkable BBA stout, the bourbon is present but lacking in intensity as are all of the flavors really.

Good morning New BSers! Well, it's the beginning of another day (two in a row) when the overnight precipitation consisted solely of frost. With this 48 hours of low ppt, it won't be long before we have drought warnings - my backyard rice paddy will be scorched. Anyway, thanks @cjgiant, for starting us off on another NBS.
My New Breakfast Beer started by having the potential to become one of my favorites.

Let me begin by saying that the story of Sue is a real clusterfuck for everyone involved. But, on the other hand, I really appreciate how you get a free four-pack of the basic PseudoSue with your admission to the Field Museum. Anyway,

    $ 13.28 (Including shipping)/bomber ($ 0.603/oz) from Tavour, Seattle, WA. Reviewed 4/7/19.
“Bottled on 02/12/1919” in green ink on bottle shoulder. Stored at 42 degrees and served at 42 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
    Appearance – 4.25.
Body – Light yellow and dirty-hazy with moderate effervescence.
Head – Large (Maximum 5.8 cm, aggressive center pour), off-white, low density, average, diminishing to a five to ten mm lacy ring fed by effervescence, and a rocky, thick, half-cap. Head retraction also leaves multiple small three-dimensional islands of lacing on the interior of the glass.
Lacing – Good. As the level drops, A band of tiny to small bubbles remain, exhibiting stalactites and prominences. See also above.
First pour – Light yellow, hazy.
Aroma – 4 – As the cap hisses off, a marked citrus aroma invades the room. This is followed by a peachy sweetness. Unfortunately, these rapidly fade leaving only a vague fruitiness.
Flavor – 4 – Begins with moderate bitterness and a light citrus taste. The flavor fades quickly leaving a mild chalky bitterness. No alcohol (6.2 % ABV), no dimethylsulfide, no diacetyl.
Palate – 3.5 – Medium, watery, lively carbonation.
Impression and interpretation – 4 – A decent APA in which, at nearly two months old, the galaxy and citra hops are beginning to fade. I think at this age both regular PseudoSue and Pipeworks’ Lizard King are better tasting APAs.
    Rating 3.97, rDev -8.0%.

    'Bye for now.

    Hi there!
It's Mikkeller´s Hallo Ich Bin Berliner Weisse, 0.1% ABV. It "expired" 5 April, didn't check when buying it one week ago, the rest of the beers I bought simultaneously are OK vs the date. At least it was in a fridge, so guess it's still in an excellent shape!

    So...

Poured in the closest to a goblet I have, as expected for this beer. Pale yellow, just a hint of haze. Two fingers of head. 3.75
Aroma less than expected, would say yeast dominates. Quite interesting anyhow. 4
Sour taste, also some sweet. Lingers far back for quite a while, can't specify that taste, bitter/sour? 4
Mouthfeel light/medium, not as much carbonation as expected. Something about it is very proper. 4.25
Overall I'd say it's an interesting experience, probably my first Berliner Weisse. Maybe I should check it another time and see if there's more citrus in a fresher specimen? 4.25 (4.06)

    Good NBS to all!

    Will this beer be Crush-able?

Whenever I hear/see the word “Crush” I think of a soda I drank in my youth of Crush orange soda:

Well, this is New Beer Sunday so I will not be drinking and discussing a soda but a beer instead: 10 Barrel Crush Raspberry Sour.

Thanks to a generous benefactor I was gifted this beer and it is available for discussion (and consumption).

I don’t know a lot about 10 Barrel Brewing with my sole experiences heretofore having been visits to the 10 Barrel Brewpub in Portland, OR last June. Ironically I recently discussed this visit in the BA thread about Rooftop beer gardens. My wife and I visited 10 Barrel twice and we very much enjoyed drinking a number of beers rooftop style. The beers were very tasty and the rooftop bar area was quite pleasant on both of those visits.

I did some web searching and the main brewery of 10 barrel is in Bend, OR which unfortunately I did not have an opportunity to visit during my PNW vacation.

Enough Jibber Jabber – let’s see how Crush-able this beer is.

Served in my Heavy Seas Tulip glass:

    Appearance:

There is no doubt that some raspberries were used to brew this beer with its raspberry/pinkish-hue color accompanied by a 3 finger pink head.

    Aroma:

Wow! A BIG raspberry aroma here which reminds me of a raspberry sorbet.

    Taste:

The flavor follows the nose with notable raspberry accompanied with a pleasant tartness. A low bitterness.

    Mouthfeel:

    A medium body with a soft-ish mouthfeel.

    Overall:

This beer is very good! I really enjoyed the sips I took*.

*My wife watched me pour this beer and upon seeing its striking appearance she exclaimed “What’s that!”. I replied “A Raspberry Sour”. She later requested a sip and her eyes lit up and she quickly grabbed a mini-tulip glass from the kitchen glass cabinet and emphatically requested half a pour. We both thoroughly enjoyed drinking this beer with my wife summarizing the drinking experience with the proclamation of “This beer is delightful”.

    Cheers!

P.S. I luckily have 5 more cans of the beer and I will make an effort to drink one when my wife is not around

Happy Sunday, NBS crew! I was rocked this week with 2 magical boxes from @jhavs , my sender in NBS BIF #9. Basically a kid in a candy store when I look in my fridge right now. Saving the heaviest hitters for next Sunday, the official share date, but I couldn’t wait to open this one. Been on my wish list for as long as I’ve been on BA. Synopsis:
Looking back at my reviews this year, this is my second-highest rating for an ipa (the first being a Moonraker ipa from @Bum4ever that I was head over heels in love with). This beer is near-perfection in every category. I love how the grapefruit hop taste is left to stand alone throughout the sip, without any additional hop flavors muddling the waters. Super clean, which seems to be a HF trademark. Looks and feels like an elixir of the Gods. I wish this was a pounder can, so I’d be able to enjoy it for a few more minutes, but I respect their decision to go small format. It’s forcing me to slowly savor each sip, which maybe was the intention. Thanks again Jon!

This morning’s new to me beer was part of a recent trade with @rmank - Sump with Columbian Narino Los Rosales coffee, bottled 1/22/18, Perennial Artisan Ales, St. Louis MO:

Pours black with ruby edges at 58 degrees; dark brown head with quick cap; no retention, ring or lace; medium thick legs and sheeting on swirl. 4.0

Strong roast coffee nose; some chocolate too. 4.5

Coffee, cocoa, dark chocolate, green pepper; some bitter roast; no hint of booze; semi sweet chocolate malt base; lite bitter coffee roast finish. 4.25

Medium body; slick smooth feel; light carbonation; little to no warmth from 10.6% ABV. 4.0

Overall, there’s more coffee in the nose than in the taste; nice bitter roast linger...but there’s a little green peppery taste too (14 months post bottling); otherwise, still plenty of coffee presence and absolutely poundable for an Imperial Stout. 4.25

Hope you guys have a great Sunday, and Cheers!
