Yes I did. I told my wife I have had that beer. She was unimpressed.

New Beer Sunday; American Pale Ale

Evenin’ NBSers with an alert for folks in SEPA who are looking to try a beer that is newly distributed here.

After a Skype chat with a relative it's time for this evening’s new beer--the 3 Floyds Zombie Dust.

My review, subject to revision until the beer is finished, can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/26/64228/?ba=drtth#review

The aromas/flavors have a nice fruity character with some citrus such as grapefruit zest and lime along with lots of tropical fruits such as mango and lychee. The lightly toasted bready malt is way in the background and mostly provides some light sweetness to soften the bitterness but not hide it. Definitely a drinkable, enjoyable beer that I’ll be happy to have more of in the future now that 3 Floyds has returned to PA. That all said, while this is the most highly rated APA I’ve had a chance to drink, I’m not convinced it’s the best one for my tastes (and my willingness to pay the price.)

The music on the player this evening is a CD I have on loan from a friend and is a collection called Mel Brooks Greatest Hits. You can get an idea of the music covered from this Musical Tribute to Mel Brooks.

    Cheers, all!

How about 25 bucks for the pint to the right and 20 bucks for the pint to the left?

Whoops, never mind those beers are gone.

    Cheers!

As promised earlier, adding another to my Beers of Fame list. This is fantastic and a great weekend nightcap, very balanced.

330cl bottle poured into a flute
A: Light purple with a very thin head, light carbonation bubbles
S: Sour raspberry/cherry, fig, red wine & a bit of vinegar
T: Matches the nose, both the fruit/fig add a bit of sweetness that’s a bit stronger than the sour
M: Light bodied, somewhat sweet but with sour to balance and a pleasant carbonation
O: Very well balanced and quite tasty, a very well made and enjoyable beer

I was mostly 4.5s, overall 4.45 just above its 4.29 average. I’ll need to make this a part of the regular lineup and try to age some as well. Cheers!

Barrier w/ Yeastie Boys - Make Some Noise

My second and last Barrier quickie. This is probably the first time I ever had a stout that actually said "pastry stout" on the label (as opposed to the term just being a consumer given name). This was brewed with chocolate and pineapple. Nice head. Tastes like an imperial stout with bitter cocoa and a sour fruity twang. It gets better once it sits and gets flat. It's nice, but I can't help but think of Guinness and that I'd rather have a FES than a second can of this (a reoccurring sub-theme with me today during my local theme).

    Cheers.

OK, I'll bite. Soy Mexicano (honorario). I'm Mexican...honorary. I grew up here in SoCal with lots of friends and Mexican community abound. I took German in high school (did me a lot of good here- HAHA), but with switching to Spanish in college, coupled with numerous travels in Mexico, I really connected with the vastness and diversity of Mexico, and eventually ventured further south with multiple trips to Guatemala. Oh, and I married into a Mexican family-thus solidifying my honorary status.

As to your question about Cinco de Mayo celebrations, it's interesting. My in-laws didn't deem Cinco de Mayo important in the past. As you stated, it is NOT Mexican Independence Day, but in my family it has evolved into an affirmation of Mexican-ness (sic). So tacos de camarones (SHRIMP TACOS) today! YAY! My wife is a champ at this dish. But it also stands as evidence of the diaspora experience. My wife is originally from landlocked Zacatecas, Mexico. She never had shrimp as a child, except for the dried type that's be used during Lent.

And for a Mexican Vienna style lager, I popped a Trader Jose's Dark Premium Lager. Color be disappointed.

Technically not a new one to me, but not inspiring me. Didn't write it up.I'll be back to write up one in a bit, a better one, I hope.

Round two of Cinco de Mayo tie-in beers. This one is tenuous, at best, with mezcal barrel aging. I do attempt to try everything these guys send down, so here goes...
    The review:
12oz canned 4/9/19 (4 weeks ago) poured into tulip glass at fridge temp 9% ABV 30 IBU. The beer pours mostly bright, orange tinted light amber with off white head. The head recedes to an island and thin ring. No lacing or residual head. The aroma is faint, but complex, with Belgian yeast, mild sweetness, citrus and malt. The taste is more traditional tripel up front rolling into a citrusy, spicy, smokey, mildly sweet agave finish. The finish is mostly dry and features only enough bitterness to keep the sweetness reasonable. The mouthfeel is medium plus bodied with average carbonation. Overall, very good & flavorful sipper, but retains only a middling amount of the base tripel after the addition of spice, agave and mezcal barrel aging.

This is a nice, complex & flavorful beer, but the $20/4 pack pricing doesn't seem as warranted compared to their other barrel aged offerings. Glad to have tried it and would have it again, but wouldn't buy another 4 pack. Cheers all!

I should have edited my review, the metallic taste faded as the beer warmed. It was extremely enjoyable.

Today’s new one is from the NBS BIF from the generous @Jimmy_Kneecaps

This is one I have wanted to try for a long time. I’m glad I finally get the chance.

    Wicked Weed French Toast

Pours a deep brown with a light mocha head.

The aroma is of sweet, milky coffee, cinnamon and vanilla. No maple to my nose.

The maple shows it’s face in the taste. More milky coffee, vanilla and an appreciated mild cinnamon.

Thinner than expected, but enjoyable. Moderate carbonation.

This was a very good breakfast stout. I appreciated the gentle hand with the cinnamon.

    Glad to have tried it.

    Cheers.

Hola, Saludos a Todos en esta noche. Feliz Cinco de Mayo.
Como siempre, this is Late Night NBS for most of you fine folks.

Thanks to @foundersasap for this MI gem, rec'd in our NBS BIF #9 madness.
Garnet tinged amber in hue. Sandy head, decent retention. As it settles the foam changes to a milky cap. Scattered lacing.
Smell begins with a slightly boozy warm delivery of buckwheat, caramel, toffee, dates, figs, and a subtle floral citrus note. Really has some depth here.
Flavor follows with the buckwheat, caramel and toffee sweetness. Then the deep dark fruity notes come through:fig and date. As I settle into it, I get a slight boozy sweetness akin to a port, but it's not really warm with alcohol, I know that seems oxymoronic, but...The sweetness is tamed on the backend by a nuanced partnership of drying earthiness and orange zest.
Mouthfeel is medium, slightly slick, and moderately carbonated. Slight alcohol heat.
Overall, a very solid English style barleywine.

Good evening NBSers. Watched the new GOT episode. I’m on a downhill slide with it after 8 years and last week’s episode. From the first episode I was all on board with white walkers, dire wolves and dragons. I don’t care about the majority’s stake of these shitty people anymore. Thanks @Bitterbill for the Fimbulvvinter. Had the Corona for the holiday.

Those were both new to me, from ever to the last decade. Having this one now so let’s review...
My dad used to always have dark chocolate covered orange jelly sticks in our stockings at Christmas from Santa. These flavors take me back and miss that great man. Taught me everything I needed to know about being a good father myself. Pours a slick liquor black, no head or lacing. Nose is alcohol, chocolate, orange rind, smoke, leather, and bourbon. Taste follows with dark brown sugar, candy, vanilla, orange pez, and caramel. Mouth feel is moderate to full, as with all BCS variants. Overall very enjoyable and took me on a trip down memory road. 4.5 range. Cheers fellow creatures of the night.
