Happy Father's Day to the fathers. It's a fraught subject, but I appreciate the good fathers, or anyone who raises children without inflicting damage.

Starting early watching a stream of the Dauphine bike race. a preliminary for the Tour de France. I have someone coming by this afternoon to look at a bike I have for sale. I am a complete pushover in negotiations outside work, so I will probably end up paying him to take the bike.
My new beer today is New Belgium Voodoo Ranger Jucifer IPA. I picked up a six pack based on generally positive reaction by BA's. It is very hazily attractive with a healthy white head from a normal pour. The aroma is an inviting citrus and pine melange. No off flavors in the hop forward tropical combination. Nice bitterness. I'll drink several of these today.

I could spend the afternoon picking out what I don't like about this beer, but I prefer to focus on the good qualities and the variety of New Belgium beers available year round in beer stores and supermarkets.

    Slyfox grissette
    ...orange gold color
.slightly thin bodied with at least medium carbonation
...aroma is hay, dry, grass , some grain and citrus
Taste doesnt stray too far from aroma. Definitely a little dry with grass and hay upfront. There is enough grain and citrus to keep this interesting
..overall I would get this again, makes for a decent summer beer as it went fast and easy[IMG]

Happy Sunday, NBS crew! @cjgiant I tend to alternate home drinking and brewery drinking...very rarely find myself at a bar these days. This past week was the exception, with end of the school year revelry taking me into some questionable bars almost every night this week. No plans today, though, so taking this opportunity to dig into the goodies @Buck89 sent me earlier this week, in a ninja box from the Sloppy Seconds BIF. This’ll be my first beer I’ve tried from Narrow Gauge...big-time brewery want!

    Synopsis:
Apparently this is exclusively hopped with Nelson. It’s probably my least favorite hop, but damn did these 2 breweries find a way to re-engineer it. It presents tropical on the nose, and the taste is mostly tropical (pineapple especially) and citrus hops. Not what I was expecting! Some cheesy/skunky “Nelsonness” slides into the middle of the sip, but it’s secondary to the tropical flavors. This one is a winner. Thanks again John!

Back at it, NBSers! This is likely my last post until this evening, based on my schedule. I only have one new beer on hand that I really wanted to get to (other than those I insist on sharing and refuse to open solo, of which there are quite a few), and it's one I brought back from the PNW.

We don't get Upland around here, so I was keen on picking up a couple of their brews. Their sours (I had previously tried kiwi and strawberry) have been excellent so far, so this oak aged peach lambic definitely was something I wasn't about to pass up.

I'm not the biggest peach fan, funny enough, but it's a flavor that goes well in sour ales. And oh, what a sour ale this is! I'm going to selectively cut and paste from my review (leaving out some of the details for brevity), because everything I'd normally capture in this thread (impressions, thoughts) I also found worthy of capturing in the review:

The nose is strong, with hints being picked up from a distance. Up close, it's difficult to tell what is more dominant: the sour, oaky tannins, or the peaches. It's a wonderful balance of a rustic, American take on a Lambic, and natural, punchy, overripe fruit. I'm really enjoying just taking sniff after sniff.

Very, very sour on the palate - to the point that the peaches give more of a faint impression than really stand out on their own, at least early and mid sip.

Lip- and gum- smackingly puckering. Body is smooth, lively, and medium; finish is relatively short due to the pucker and moderately high astringency. The sourness echoes on the palate and in the throat, but most of the flavor quickly melts away post-sip.

I would be tempted to call this more of an American Wild Ale, given the relatively extreme sourness; the peaches make an impact, without question, but the high level of sourness is almost shocking on every single sip. There is perhaps less rustic funk than a good and strong Belgian Lambic, and more outright sourness. This is definitely not for a sour novice.

Just ... wow. This one blew me away, and the ratings reflect that. I can't say that it's the most balanced Lambic I've ever had, nor the fruitiest - nor even the best, for that matter. But it's damn, damn impressive.

    4.41 / +6.5%

(That's my highest +rDev in the last 23 reviews!)

    Cheers, NBSers!

Industrial Arts - Summer Landscape 2019

I feel like all of the IA Landscape beers could use years added to their name in the BA database. Here we have the new summer one. They are calling it a "Historical Lager" but I think that's probably just (mainly BS) marketing speak for "we used corn in this one." They do claim that it's made with a "traditional American lager yeast" though... whatever that is. Hops are Nugget, Glacier, Willamette and Mt Hood.

The beer is shockingly pale and brilliantly clear. Tastes of pilsner malt and a ton of spicy and herbal hops. The hops are so loud here because there's little to get in the way of them. Ultimately, it feels like a refreshing hop delivery vehicle more than anything else. This is really nice and sure to please the folks in this thread who like this series (you know who you are ). It sure pleases me.

    I’m glad you enjoyed!

It seems Upland gets knocked quite a bit for the level of sourness in their brews...

Even being from Indiana, and being able to try a lot of their brews, I wish for less sometimes. It can get kind of hard to separate brew from brew, because as you stated the somewhat “lack of fruitiness” or other qualities and just being that sour punch.

It even leads me to pass on some of their fruited brews because of these facts. But in the end, I do think they have a nice blonde base.

I enjoy their other experiments too. Like the dark sour/quad blends and what not.

    Anyway, that’s enough rambling.

    Cheers!

L-The beer pours glossy and black allowing no light penetration even at the edges. The head is a modest 3/4 finger high and mocha in color. The head recedes to a thin film with thicker central island. Lacing is minimal but can be raised by swirling.
S-The nose is dark chocolate with bourbon riding over the top of it.
T-The nose translates to palate exactly. There is a fantastic dark chocolate base which transitions mid palate to a pleasant medium strength bourbon presence. The two elements mix in the finish with the chocolate from the malts lasting slightly longer into the aftertaste.
F- Mouthfeel overall is on the higher side of medium. Carbonation is light. This is one of the thicker barrel aged stouts that I've had. It has a slick, silky feel on the tongue which coats and allows the flavors to linger.
O- A beautifully crafted sipper of a beer. None of the flavors are new or innovative, just crafted in a way which demands your appreciation. Honestly I can't recommend it highly enough.

Today of all days this beer feels appropriate.

From the bottle: The time spent with loved ones, now lost, seems to affect our mind and body perpetually: memories happen upon us, unsuspectingly, and bring about tears of fond remembrance.

Gone two years now days like today still bring up a whirlwind of emotions. I miss you Dad.

New Fruited Saison Sunday (Week 747)
Greetings fellow NBSers from on the ridge in Mid Hud Val. Cloudy and spitting rain here, mushroomers' weather for sure.

Thirty one years ago I walked through woods to a high point that included a long, flat rock outcropping, part of which was scraped smooth by glaciers. When I sat on the rock and looked through and above the late autumn woods to the cliffs of the Shawangunks across the valley I knew I was in my place. It is my favorite place for everything, the place I feel relaxed and most natural to be, including drinking beer, and I now live and drink this beer in my house built upon that outcropping, surrounded by these woods I love.

This beer was gonna be consumed y'day, but had a fun time instead with @zid and many others re-visiting (in my case) my love for Dubbels as he hosted an on line tasting for the style. I know some of y'all were in on the fun too. So I have two, that's right two, beers for NBS today. Especially looking forward to this version of Parlance by Suarez Family, the Shiro Plum edition just released on Fri.
Live review, will edit and add to base later-
Mmmm full aroma, very tart plum, with exquisite fresh fruit character to it, some acetic notes, def. rounded yeasty tart, oak smells prominent, and some crisp grain sweet and light rotted fruit notes behind it all.

Oh, my, fellow NBSers, were there only a way to transport you here right now to enjoy this with me. That was one of the best first sips of a new beer in years. Pardon the language but Holy Fucking Shit. Back in a minute or two after I recover.. Quite tart, beautifully so, it's a bright blast that explodes in mouth like a fireworks display or flavor. Not super complex, it is just a brilliantly portrayed assembly of ripe plum, over ripe peach, oaky vinous notes, deep yeasty tart with acetic tart notes as well, clean presentation beyond what seems possible to do with this style, just bitter and oaky enough at end to finish perfectly.

Mouthfeel description is hard to describe as superlatively as it deserves other than to say it is the straw that stirs this baby, perfect viscosity and carbonation frame bright clean flavors with a mouthfeel that just pumps the flavors and refreshment into the pleasure centers of the brain, and creates yearning for next sip.

Woaahh, this beer is so in my wheelhouse. Friends and I hesitate to talk up Suarez, but I can't help but feel we are blessed here to have one of the world's finest breweries Highest recommendation.

Hope you also have a Great American Beer in your glass. Cheers!

Good morning NBS and happy Fathers Day to all the other dads out there. I’m thrilled to say I’m now in that group as my little girl just joined the world on Wednesday!!:grin: I have never been happier or more in love! She just settled down for a nap allowing me my first beer since she got here as I can’t miss joining this group.

For the original question - mostly at home though Cleveland is home to many breweries I frequent and I always enjoy sharing a few with fine beer loving friends. Hopefully in two decades I’ll be sharing them with my daughter.

Quite nice and a great treat on this special day. Overall mostly 4.5s from me, just above its overall average.

Checking out the 2019 release (May 18th, to be precise) of...

Smog City's Bourbon barrel-aged Olde English barleywine style ale...

Had the 2018 and loved it...

    So, in the now...
Caramel-colored beer kicked up aromas of booze-soaked apples and vanilla, molasses and dates... Sip revealed a full-bodied, boozy, dark fruity barleywine... Ample bourbon saturates all the woods and fruits and malts into a high-level decadent affair... Calls to mind their previous year's release as well as some of The Bruery's anniversary series beers (alright, maybe it's not that boozy (it's been a while)), but this has a real dominant 14.1% abv, backed with thick, overripe fruits, chewy and succulent... Tobacco and leather notes introduce an earthier, herbal aspect to the profile... With enough time between sips, a bit of oaky drying will creep in, leaving a fruit leather and bourbon shellac across the tongue, and you can appreciate a bit of an airy, drying wood element hovering over the palate...
Here's to new beer in your glass, and happy Fathers Day, cheers...

It's a bit gloomy in North NJ now and I going to rain later on. Got the lawn done spend the rest of the day watching golf and baseball.
This weeks new beer is named Josephs Brau PLZNR a Czech-Style Lager. Josephs Brau is the house beer for Trader Joes. I don't know who brews this for Trader Joes but there is a Milwaukee Wisconsin on the bottle. As you can guess this is their take on a Pilsner. It looks the way a Pilsner should nice clear golden color with a thick white head. The aroma is very mild for a Pilsner nothing wrong just weak. The same can be said for the taste. Nothing wrong but I expect a lot more flavor in a Pilsner. The mouthfeel is medium and the finish is dry. overall it's not a bad beer just not much of a Pilsner.

Actually, that does sound really nice :sunglasses:.

I think they're using the "Historical Lager" term to suggest it's in the Pre-prohibition Pilsner style (Pre-pro, or sometimes called CAP for Classic American Pilsner), and the pils-level hopping rates would be quite acceptable.

My local beer guy said that we should start to see it next week in NJ- can't wait!

Happy Father's Day to all you dads out there.
Like so many of you, I do most of my drinking at home with my wife. She likes beer and is a lot of fun to be with. We also have a favorite beer bar to drink at, the kind of place where you can drink beer and shell peanuts, then throw the shells on the floor. Plus they are dog-friendly.
My new beer for today is Mail Order, from Red Door Brewing in Albuquerque. It is a Russian Imperial Stout, 9.0% ABV. Written on the bottle is 337 of 528.
The beer is jet black. There is a small, quickly-receding tan head. A tiny bit of lace.
    Roasted malt aroma, some charcoal.
Coffee, chocolate, and char taste, building throughout and lingering.
    Medium-bodied.
    A very nice beer.
