Reunions. I went to my 10th high school reunion about two decades ago. I have two memories of that event. The first, I spent a good part of the night hanging out with a couple girls I didn’t even remember being in my class. I had to go back to the yearbook to ensure they were actually in my graduation class. My school wasn’t very big. They didn’t remember me either. I always found that amusing.

The second. One guy who was more of an acquaintance than a friend ended up getting into a tussle with one of the bouncers at the bar. It ended with him breaking a bunch of stuff and bragging that he was a customs agent for some unknown reason. I heard a few weeks later he had been fired from his job as a result of his behaviour that night. I’ve never heard anything of him since.

I doubt I’d ever go to another reunion. The two or three people I was still close with at the 10 year reunion are the 2 or 3 I’m still close with today. Similarly, with college and graduate school.

    On to the beer...

Tonight I’m having a flavoured stout from the current hottest brewery in the country, Substance from Brasserie de Bas Canada.

The beer pours a deep brown black with a lovely cappuccino head that dissipates slowly leaving an oily, spotty topper.

Milk chocolate out front on the nose. Coffee, brown sugar, vanilla follow. A little coconut in the background. Lovely.

The taste is in line with the aroma. Well integrated notes of chocolate, sugar, vanilla, coconut, milky coffee. Alcohol burn is non-existent. This is tasty.

    Nice and thick mouthfeel.

This is just a fantastic flavoured imperial stout. If this were from a US brewery it would be on ISO everywhere. This brewery deserves its current spot on the top Canadian breweries list over at Untappd. Everything I’ve had has been stellar. Seek and find if you can!!.

Got into this gem from @Coronaeus
    [IMG]
Black pour with finger plus of tan head.
Smells of really dark roasted coffee and malts. Bourbon comes through quite strong as well.
Taste follows, dark roasty malts and coffee, a bit of char but not overly bitter, dark chocolate. Woody, vanilla barrel notes come through quite well.
A touch thin, especially as it warms.
Overall an excellent BA coffee stout. Well balanced.

I'm exhausted, but I promised @cjgiant that I'd get to this beer tonight. So, here it is: Maine Beer Company's Thank You (2019 edition).

First off, I agree with my esteemed NBS veteran (and sometime NBS host): this bottle promises notes of tangerine, pineapple, mango, and dried apricot ... and I just don't get that out of this glass.

What I do get is a classic MBC blend of hops and malt, with wonderful pale grains and piney, dank, citrus-y hops that never come across as even slightly stale. It's a balance that almost no other brewers seem to master, especially brewers of super hoppy ales; MBC always somehow manages to highlight their grainy malt bill just as much as their hops, even while prominently featuring hops.

Across the board, this is a solid, solid ale. I try not to fall prey to homerism, but this is just plain damn good. Review below:

CJ and I agreed that the advertised premise didn't quite meet with the delivery, and overall I see a lot of parallels with his ratings. We differ in very minor facets and numbers, and I clearly enjoyed this more, but not by a wide margin. I think we'd both agree this is a beer worth trying, albeit at MBC prices, perhaps not a "must buy."

Cheers, NBS friends and family, and good night!

    Good evening, NBS.

I was hoping to review more than one new beer today. Luckily, I now have time for #2. This is not a new brewery for me. In fact, it is my second milk stout from Weldwerks in as many nights courtesy of @Orca_Whale !!!

    Coffee French Toast Stout

A 7.1% Milk Stout with maple syrup, cinnamon, medianoce barrel aged Peruvian coffee and vanilla.

Look: The beer pours pitch black with light brow flares sounds. tbick, densely packed, two finger light brown head sits atop the opaque liquid. As I start to write up the appearance of the beer, the head settles to a thin layer across the top. A thick, foamy ring around the edge and a lot of lacing on my glass. There is no visible carbonation.

Smell: This beer is a coffee maple breakfast stout. Without question. Tons of freshly brewed dark roast coffee with milk and sugar added. Sweet, creamy and maple aroma. Touch of cinnamon. Very mild. Although the cinnamon really starts to grow as the beer warms. Green coffee/pepper aroma.

Taste: The flavor is coffee forward. It is semi sweet with the slightly bitter and acidic coffee offset by some milk chocolate and sweet maple. The finish is semi-dry, nutty and cinnamon stick. Cinnamon spice as the beer warms up. Slight green bell pepper on the taste as well.

Feel: Medium bodied, low carbonation. Some residual sweetness on the lips. Thank

Overall: A nice homage to breakfast. Mainly coffee, but the other flavors manifest themselves to a degree. The cinnamon seemed non-existent to me at first, but as the beer warmed up the aroma and flavor of cinnamon began to shine as a little spicy.

Some bitterness and a green vegetal note. This is all good. An enjoyable beer. Not too sweet. Everything is evident and plays nicely together.

Ian, I've been meaning to ask what you think about the new Allegaeon. I personally like it, but nothing on the album has grabbed me like their previous albums.

I agree, still an awesome album though. Previous ones were a lot more impressive. Will keep it in the rotation! Not a bad album in the discography.

I didn’t ever think any vintage of Bomb! was THIS hot. But then again, I had this beer fresh when released. I could see how with some time it could’ve melded into what Bomb! used to be.

    Cheers!
