Back again with a different local brewery. I have Muddy Boots from Little House Brewing. Here is their description-

Sure, it’s as brown as a muddy, spring day spent tromping through the woods, but this dark ale drinks more like an IPA than anything else. A hint of chocolate comes through, but all the flavors of Muddy Boots are driven by this years Pink Boots Hop Blend: Azacca, El Dorado, Idaho Gem, and Loral. The malt backbone serves to balance this tropical, piney, and citrusy flavor bomb. For those of you who don’t know, the Pink Boots Society is a global nonprofit dedicated to women in the brewing industry. A huge thanks to Christina, our wonderful bartender, who helped develop and brew this beer!
They call it a Cascadian Dark Ale, which I am not familiar with. Here is a BA magazine article and a Craft Beer article on the style-

Wow, I suddenly love this style, if this is a good example.

Seaworthy from Oxbow Brewing Co. Newcastle, Maine

Canned on 2.21 opened 3/ 29 best consumed 6 months from date 6.5 abv centennial and Amarillo dry hopped Czech styled lager with pils and Vienna malts
Poured golden yellow semi see through with a thin head and slight lacing
Aroma is lemon and orange rind and a bread yeast like note
Taste is crisp and follows nose
Mouth feel is full and medium carbonated
    Finishes somewhat dry and astringent
This one would do well in the summer months, crisp and fairly light, with lemon rind notes. Nice beer

Nice write-up! I am looking forward to seeing this one locally and giving it a try.
That is a damn good beer! Had a chance to have that one recently and absolutely loved it.
Any luck on a place that delivers?

After a break, I'm right back to @kemoarps ' box, and yet another barleywine.

    Gigantic Massive! BBA barleywine

The database is unclear on whether this is an ABW or EBW/BBW. I agree it's somewhat in the middle. I think I would lean ABW, but the bourbon barrel treatment brings it more toward a sweeter, maltier middle.

This beer does not carry a misnomer; it's freaking Massive! Oh, and absolutely delicious. It has a mouthfeel as thick and full as any imperial stout you'll find, and while it's hot and boozy, for a 14% ABV brew, it's remarkably approachable and sippable.

I am absolutely loving this. What a wonderful treat. Thank you yet again, Kestrel!

    Yes!

I just ordered a couple of saisons (plus a couple of their other beers while I was at it) from a Minneapolis small brewery, Wild Mind Artisan Ales. Supposed to arrive at my front porch tomorrow afternoon.

I'm set for the saison tasting, plus a couple of other new beers for a future NBS.

4 Hands Chocolate Covered Cherry Milk Stout, 5.5% ABV, 3.43 overall

Pours an effervescent chestnut hued mahogany with near zero head, what little there was, was tan colored. Trace amounts of head retention & no lacing to speak of

    S: A little chocolate & iron

T: Some cherry, dryness & chocolate up front. Some iron mixes in as this warms, along with Maraschino Cherry, faint leafy hops and light chocolate notes as this warms. Finishes dry with iron & a little chocolate & cherry

MF: Medium body with slight carbonation

Was expecting more from this one, one & done. Might work as a dessert beer, not so much a just a beer to enjoy as a standalone

    Good afternoon NBS
    Unibroue Terrible quad here today...
    The review:
750mL corked bottle BB 02-14-22 (about 3 years old) poured into a chalice at just above fridge temp 10.5% ABV 45 SRM 15 IBU. The beer pours dark brown with minimal highlights and light brown head. The head recedes to a thin ring and single layer of bubbles. Slight lacing. The aroma is sweet brown sugar with notes of raisin, plum, cherry and red grape. The taste is brown sugar and malt sweetness up front with the assorted dried & dark fruits showing up next before a barely bitter finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with above average carbonation and a semi dry finish. No alcohol presence in the aroma or taste. Overall, very good. This is a really malt driven quad, without any overt yeast driven quality at a great price. Mine was purchased recently, at room temperature, and had minimal oxidation.

That's it for me today. I'm down to 3 (new to me) dubbels in the fridge with hopes that the Belgian beers I ordered will show up before the saison tasting Saturday. Cheers all and enjoy the new beer in your glass today!

Accidentally posted before I reviewed, then accidentally closed the page. Well.....

Poured from a Crowler filled about 70 minutes ago to a Nonic.
Pours brown-orange, somewhat translucent, but quite dark. Nice pillowy tan head.
    Smells of burnt caramel.
Wow, this thing is dry, dry, dry and I love that. The finish has a hint of that caramel with now sugar if you can understand that.
Reasonable carbonation, sticky mouth feel like its sweat, but its far from that, go figure.
This beer just came out this weekend. I hope I can get some more.

Ian, excellent review, especially honing in on how "bigger/more" doesn't necessarily equal "better" (but can still be damn good!).

Stored in my refrigerator since purchase, this was a very smooth and creamy pour (ok multiple pours), glad I pulled this out today.

This delightful offering was a suprise, excellent fruit display, touch of barell, and deft use of mixed culture.

O - A very good offering with all cylinders firing in unison. Worth seeking out

NBS #2: Black Rabbit, a European Dark Lager from Toms River Brewing in New Jersey. This can was given to me by a (non-BA) beer buddy. It's a bit old (9/11/2019) but the style usually holds up well. This is a unique beer: it combines chocolate malt with fairly tart citrus. The Fuggle hops add an English pub ale quality. Although it's only 5.6% ABV, it has a nice, creamy mouth feel. It's big enough to pair with pub fare but it's fine for casual drinking. Toms River Brewing is definitely on my radar. Here's my full review:

    3.97/5 rDev 0%
    look: 4 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4

Canned on 9/11/2019. Poured into a pint glass. It pours a very dark walnut - approaching black - with a significant, fluffy, light khaki head and significant lacing. A subdued nose with buttery malt and lite citrus. The taste opens with fairly sweet, roasty malt and hints of chocolate, which balance nicely with notes of bright lemon peel, grapefruit rind, and herbs. The Fuggle hops provide a taste that reminds me of an English pub ale. The flavor is actually quite unique. For 5.6% ABV, the feel is fairly creamy and viscous and it's certainly easy to drink. Overall, Black Rabbit is a bit hard to describe. The balance of roasty chocolate malt and tart citrus works well and the mouth feel is surprisingly luxurious. This Lager really grew on me as I drank it. It has enough flavor to pair with a burger, cheese steak or other pub fare. But it's also appropriate for casual drinking. Toms River is on to something here and this is a beer to watch.

    Please stay well, everyone!

Tros Bessen, a Kriek Lambic aged on red currants by Belgian brewery De Cam (6.5% ABV).

Pours a cloudy, deep crimson coloration with a large, foamy, quickly fading head. Smells is dominated by a vibrant, tart cherry and red currant aroma, with some light blue cheese funk and just a hint of oaky tannins as well.

Taste follows the nose, being dominated by the quite vibrant, tart red cherry and currants, with a medium citric acidity as well as some blue cheese funk and a distinct note of oaky tannins and just the merest hint of balsamic vinegar and spice. Finishes quite dry, with a medium tartness and some red currants and oaky tannins lingering in the aftertaste. Effervescent mouthfeel with a medium body and medium/strong carbonation.

A very nice fruited Lambic with a quite dry character and an excellent balance of distinct flavors, with the red cherries, currants and oaky tannins standing out particularly here and complementing each other quite well, while being accompanied by a good acidity and subtle funkiness, with the very light balsamic vinegar and spice notes providing a certain sharp, but not unpleasant, edge in the finish. A very enjoyable Lambic that does not need to hide behind the more popular breweries in the least. Major gusher though, be careful opening this.

Happy New Russian Impy Stout Sunday!

Pretty nice day here on the Western Slope, at the trailhead, around 47, cloudy, windy. Having a very tasty brew, not new, but a new vintage. Might be back with another brew, fairly new.

    2020 Vintage
    No. 11
    Cases Produced: 3000
    ABV: 13.6%

Poured into a chalice a pretty nice dark brown color, pretty nice carbonation, with a pretty nice thick/creamy/kinda quick small tan head, which leaves a pretty nice medium size oil slick/island, with some minimal sticky lacing. The nose is very nice, malty, hoppy, with a very nice touch of chocolate/toffee, vanilla, very nice dark fruit complex (cherries, figs, plums, dates), pretty nice bourbon/oak notes, some licorice, slight coffee. The taste is really freakn' awesome, malty, hoppy, very nice vanilla sweetness, very nice touch of bourbon/oak, licorice, with a very nice dark fruit complex (cherries, figs, dates, plums), chocolate/toffee notes. Full Body, ABV hidden very well, this is a very complex brew. Overall, a very very tasty brew. Glad to see these around here.

Viva la Beaver - peanut butter milk stout with cinnamon and coffee, from Belching Beaver, Crowler pour:

A: opaque dark brown body with light khaki head.

S: Sweet dessert peanut butter notes roll out of the glass, waves of milk chocolate, sweet coffee and lactose, caramel, hints of roast and spice. Cinnamon blends very well and is not at the forefront.

T: More of the same, peanut butter/milk chocolate candy bars with caramel and hazelnuts, peanut butter is soft and sweet, not too roasty and not dry at all, finish is sweet but never cloying, this is well done. Again the cinnamon character feels like an extension of the other adjuncts and never takes over.

MF: Creamy medium body, sweet finish. Silky smooth.

O: So good. Only knock is that the coffee seems almost invisible, but this is one of the best peanut butter beers I’ve ever had.
