    Hello (almost) Late Night NBS
I have been busier than 4 kindergarteners' fingers and nostrils lately.
Sorry, that was inspired by watching my wife Zoom with some of her kdg students at 7:00 at night. MY wife is truly inspiring. She is doing SOOOOO much to connect with, check on, and teach her little ones. It's basically on and off the whole day, form about 9:00AM to 7:45 PM. I am praying that we can get back to some kind of classroom teaching, but...

Anyway, I have been swimming in NBS generosity as of late. Amazing boxes from @larryi86 crushed me. A LIF bit of fun from @thebeers . And a surprise box from @Pinz412 . But for today I am reaching back to something special from @superspak . He sent this to me in NBS BIF #10
Deleterious a BBA Imperial Stout from Odd Side

Holy shit, she's beautiful. About the darkest color of brown you can behold, literally a shade lighter than black. And capped by the most alluring dark mocha foam, dense and firm. Solid retention. Clumpy lacing.
The nose abounds with deep cocoa notes akin to brownie batter, charred caramel, mild roast, and smooth bourbon barrel hints.
The taste is much of the same from the nose. But it goes deeper. The bourbon hints are melded well into this beauty. They are a constant contributor, but smooth never hot. And this is not a sugar bomb. It is sweeter than what I think of as a more traditional Russian Impy but it retains some of the earthy, almost peaty, notes that many of the newer BA Impy stouts lack. A true beauty.
Mouthfeel is chewy, slight carbonation, and a mild bitterness that dries out the end a bit.
    Overall, more please.

I thought throughout my grammar school years that on weekends a man needed to be at least 2 Beers-In before he was eligible to use power tools, ride off road vehicles, shoot off firearms, build/fix things, etc...

Same, could drink that Grodziskie all day long; right up there with the Kolsch for me. Well, and maybe their Rauchbier.
Oh, and their Pils was.. aw never mind. You get the point.

Greetings, NBSers. I hope everyone and their friends and family are safe. This is a late entry for me this week, and one that I almost didn't make. It's difficult to concentrate on the subtleties of a brew while watching the world burn, literally. Then I remembered that beer has played a large part in keeping me sane throughout the pandemic, so why not give it a chance to help with civil unrest as well? I'm glad I made that decision.

This week's beer comes from @ATLien and the ninja strike that he laid on me recently. This is my first proper beer from Burial. I had previously had a collab they did with Jackie O's, but that was it. I was excited to see what it had to offer, but had to wait a few minutes to bring my can of Skillet Donut Stout to a proper temperature. My patience was rewarded with a beer that defied my expectations of a sweet, adjunct heavy stout, and instead provided a medium bodied stout with big balanced flavor. I doubt that I'll have a chance to get another new brew in tonight based on what's in the fridge right now, so until next week. :beers:[IMG]

Look - Pours an opaque black with a light tan fluffy 1-2 finger head with bubbles of varying size.
Smell - Roasted malt, molasses, and coffee are prominent on the nose listed in descending order by intensity.
Taste - The aroma precedes the flavor almost perfectly. The molasses flavor hits me first and blends perfectly with the big roasted malt. Coffee comes in on the finish, but does not overwhelm the way that it can be prone to do. It should be noted that with a strong molasses notes, this is not an overly sweet beer.
Feel - Medium body on the palate, it is a smooth drinker. Lactose gives it a little extra body. Easy drinking.
Overall - I immediately assumed that a donut stout would be a sweet and thick brew. I was pleasantly surprised that this is actually a well balanced and easy drinking stout. It provides big flavor without having to tread into imperial territory. I don't know that I get a true donut flavor, but Skillet Donut Stout is a beautiful breakfast stout.

I would regret not mentioning the stellar artwork on this can. The imagery was beautiful and a thorough description of the beer itself. Nice work all around by Burial here.

I've only had the Mocha Hazelnut version of Parish's Reve, but it was pretty fantastic. If you or @JayORear ever see it around I suggest giving it a try.

Happy NBS! An absolutely beautiful day here in NJ, despite the persistent eeriness outside. Beer helps to unwind and get the mind off things. I was really entertained by all of the great posts and reviews in the Pilsner tasting thread. Was going to sit this Sunday out but I fired up the grill for dinner and had a new beer by my side. So, away we go...

    Marzen Kellerbier
    Jack's Abby Brewing

    16 oz canned on 2/24/2020.

Deep amber in color with a slight haziness to it, otherwise it's clear. Big, frothy off-white head with good retention. Strong toasted malt and biscuit aroma with spicy hops. The flavor is more of the same with the spice becoming more prominent, but not overwhelming. It's almost rye-like in a way, but it's hard to tell if it's coming from the malt or the hops. Maybe both? Either way, it's a nicely balanced brew with a dry finish and clean feel to it. Medium bodied. I do the majority of my Märzen drinking from September thru November, but this beer absolutely works for this time of year. Cheers, BAs!

Without consciously trying, new beer: 2016 Liefman’s Goudenband. I was deliberating and didn’t want to tap anything from the usual stuff. I have two of these, so time for a try. Looks like a doppelbock in the glass, but drinks all sour...traditional sour, not Mas Agave sour. On the tongue you get a quick sour bite that leads you to think it’ll be too much, but it backs off to a pleasant tart fruit flavor, IDK, like raspberry with granny apple. Good malt finish. It doesn’t show a lot of carbonation, but it feels lively in the mouth despite looking dead still. Alcohol is in the imperial range, low enough to keep you from getting hit too hard too fast. Surprised a little. Very nice beverage.

Rebel Kettle Working Glass Hero Blonde Ale, 4.5% ABV, 3.35 overall, I don't like this style, but this one is a real clunker

Pours an effervescent gold with 2+ fingers of eggshell colored head. Devoid of lacing & head retention

S: Cereal notes, grass, faint citrus notes
T: Follows the nose, some lime & lemons as well up front. Sweet graininess, limes & dryness as this warms. Finishes sweet & grainy with a little lemon

MF: Medium body, moderate carbonation, okay balance

Fairly run of the mill for the style, alright drinkability

Here's another one that was in the fridge for a bit.
    About 7 years?
I've always loved beers from De Molen,
but a bourbon barrel aged collab?
    Oh yeah!

    750 ml bottle.
    No date.
    6-8 years old...?
Moderate pour yields a 1/2" tan head over a dark, dark, dark reddish-brown (near black) body with some lacing. Nose of dark chocolate, dark fruit, bourbon, vanilla, caramel, and smoke. Taste is true to the nose and then some! As it warms, aromas and flavors morph slightly with leather, coffee, and spice appearing. Wow! A fine bit of smoke and cherry on the finish. Nice feel and overall, I'm very impressed with this one, folks.
    Cheers!

Well, Im back with my last beer for the night although I'm admittedly struggling to focus on the beer with all the shit going on in the world lately.

Anyway, this is VSOP Orin - a Cognac barrel aged brown/strong ale from Half Acre in Chicago.
Pours a Burgundy tinged dark brown color. Thin, velvety off-white head shows some retention, but eventually dissipates. Aroma has notes of brown sugar, maple syrup, dark dried fruits, oak, cognac and some slightly roasty rich malts. Its one of those beers you just want to keep smelling.

The taste is largely what you'd expect given the nose - you get some brown sugar, dried dark stone fruit, lovely notes of cognac, vanilla, oak, with a very smooth mellow finish. The barrel character on this is strong, a bit hot, but enjoyable. I think this would be really nice with maybe 9 - 12 months or so on it, but alas a howler doesn't allow for aging. Feel is medium bodied, super smooth and warming. Moderate carbonation.

Overall this was delicious. I love cognac so perhaps I am predisposed to like this one, but nonetheless, I loved it.

Agreed on all accounts. I checked my offline ratings to see if this was the highest Dovetail rating, and only Kriek (sampled 4 or 5 times at last years Binny's BA festival) was the only one higher. Kolsch and Pilsner also highly rated on my end. Getting a little nervous as I may have lost my FOBAB review notes from last year. :grimacing:

I like most styles but Hefe (and most NEIPAs) are ones for me to avoid for the most part. Hefeweizens because they are mostly bland (there is a jalepaneo one I like by Banger in Vegas), and NEIPAs because they are mostly juice boxes (M-43 and Les Jus being exceptions I like since they are balanced).

Also love the various Orin pours I have had over the years, though never had the cognac aged blend. Hoping Orin, Big Hugs and Bethnic aren't all replaced by Half Acre's recent Haze Craze when they are released this Fall. :astonished:
