My new beer is Intrepid Orchid from Bottle Logic. Barley Wine aged in bourbon barrels with Madagascar vanilla. Poured from a bottle at fridge temp and allowed to warm. A nice light brown head that quickly departs. Pours a very dark brown - almost black. Nose is maple, bourbon, toffee, and vanilla. Some secondary notes of cream, nuts, milk chocolate, and figs. Decadent. Not overly complex. This screams pastry, but it's clear the English barleywine is strong on this as well. The taste is outstanding. The toffee and vanilla are dominant, with a lot of maple coming through. Definitely makes me think of pancakes with maple syrup. Everything mingles nicely, with a beautiful aftertaste. This is sweet, but not too sweet. Zero bitterness. Overall, this is a winner for Bottle Logic. Cheers!

Starting tomorrow I will basically be on call 24-7-365, so I thought tonight would be a good occasion to try that expensive stout I’ve eyeballed so many times without buying. The real secret to overcoming my cheapness was I had been giving some serious thought buying a Gibson Byrdland guitar, after which a $9 or $10 bottle of stout doesn’t seem too insane. But I digress.

This is a delicious stout. I doubt I can add more to the topic but it is not too sweet, not too dry, and has a strong cocoa note to it. The flavor lingers pleasantly and rewards small sips enjoyed at intervals.

I won’t go so far as to say that this unseats my personal favorite stout, Big Bad Baptist, but I can’t buy that without driving to Ohio so it’s a matter of a bird in the hand being worth two at a bottle shop in Cincinnati.

    Cheers.

Hanging Gardens: Petit Verdot is part of Brew Gentlemen's Mise-en-Rose collection. This is the modern-American farmhoulse ale part of their portfolio that focuses on mixed culture fermentation, extended oak aging, and careful blending. Hanging Gardens in particular "is a blend of barrel-aged beers, further conditioned atop a rotating variety of fruit. This time: petite verdot grapes." NBS always seems to teach me something each week, and this week I learned that Petit Verdot grapes are a red wine grape primarily used in Bordeaux blends. The tannins they added to the beer are very apparent while also lending a lightly floral quality. This was a pleasure to drink, and I'm grateful to have one more bottle in the cellar.

Look - Pours a clear purple with a fleeting pink fizzy head.
Smell - Musty grape hits my nose initially with a light barnyard funk. A light acidity is also present in the aroma.
Taste - A light sour/tart sensation up front with juicy grape following it up. The finish is dry and tannic with spicy oak and leather lingering.
Feel - Lightly acidic feeling that builds in intensity before a very dry finish, resulting in a bit of cat tongue.
Overall - This is a very good farmhouse ale whose use of petit verdot grapes forces you to think of a dry red. It's effervescent quality lightens it up and while the fleeting grape sweetness kept me wanting another sip.

    Good evening NBS
Just home from work and enjoying this Washington state IPA from @beertunes
    [IMG]
    Boundary Bay Cedar Dust IPA

12oz can courtesy of @beertunes stamped 05/09/20 poured into a Spiegelau IPA glass at fridge temp 16P OG, 66 IBU, 6.5% ABV per can. The beer pours bright medium amber, cedar perhaps, appearing light copper in the light. The head is very light khaki in color and settles to a thin cap that persists. Minimal lacing. The aroma is mild in strength featuring caramel malt and notes of earthy, resinous evergreen. The taste is more resiny cedar, earthy notes over a caramel backbone that is definitely second fiddle here but still strong. The hop impact is large here. Moderate bitterness throughout. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Lots of sticky hops and very little sweetness. Overall, very good. Exactly the way I like my IPAs: fresh, bitter and bright.

    Cheers all!

and when it's fresh from the horizontal lagering tank into a crowler it can lose some carbonation apparently! makes it easier to subsist solely off of?

    Hello NBS!
This week I was able to try, courtesy of @2beerdogs, a beer named 3 from Offshoot Beer Co.
Double IPA of the haze variety and it delivered in spades. Or mangos.
Wow, this is good stuff and my only complaint is that I cannot buy it locally.

    thank you @2beerdogs!

I am a turbidity freak when it comes to my NE-style IPA’s.

In all seriousness, this didn’t look anything like a NE-style IPA, even after an aggressive pour. It was only after the dregs joined the party that this beer got hazy.

A stern pour from a 12-oz. can yields a skinny finger of white soapy foam with below average retention and spots of lace.
Yellowish straw color, appears orange straw in sunlight. Cloudy, can't read through it.

The smell is lemon 1st with cracker, wheat thins, wheat bread dough, faint clove and floral hops. It smells as if it l would be sweet to the taste. These item follow to the taste minus the lemon

Wheat leads the taste, neutral on sweetness with a balanced mild bitterness of hops and spice. The malt taste is wheat bread and dough, on the rich side. There is a slight astringency yet alcohol is well hidden. The finish is wheaty and malty, long yet ends clean. Not much of an aftertaste, faint hops and clove.

Medium-light bodied with soft, plentiful carbonation. It has the expected wheaty bite with a refreshing, almost crisp feel.
The label has an accurate description of this beer, however I do not detect banana and the head shrunk away a little to soon. Barvarian-style Wheat Beer, well played.
    Canned on 02/07/20.

I feel like I've never had a NEIPA from a larger regional brewery that was worth anything. I've tried Bell's, SN, Stone, Southern Tier, etc, and it's just not a style that is conducive to the quantity and transportation needs of breweries that size. Usually I find that they taste fair to middling at best, and are always subpar in appearance.

Greetings fellow NBSers! I meant to jump in earlier, but, well, life happens. Had to work, and I've been up 24 hours now, so this is likely my only noob for the day. Boundary Bay Mantra - Lotus Edition. An OK-ish murkster, with a bit of bitterness on the finish that helps the experience: https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/701/488636/

Had the same thing happen with a Pale Ale, it started out very hazy (can't read through it, large text looked like a blurry line) and changed to turbid (that puddle at the dump with large floaties) when the dregs were added.

I'm from NE, I'm getting used to this. I get annoyed when the murk creeps into traditionally clear styles and wah hah hah and boo hoo ho, whaduyuh gunna do.

    Cheers

Hi NBSers! I'm here with a beer generously provided by @Roy_Hobbs from one of the many LIF's that permeated this round of the NBS BIF.

From Fox Farm Brewery in CT: Armour Fou, a Biere de Garde described as brewed in 2018 as a regular Biere de Garde, that spent some time in oak foeders before being racked into fresh red wine barrels for 8 months, after which it was transferred onto cherries for a couple months.

Let me preface this by saying that cherry sours are often not my thing - cherry is not my fruit of choice because I've had too many overly tart, medicinal, mouth puckeringly sour cherry beers. So I approached this beer with some trepidation, even though it came highly rated from Ross. However, my fears were unfounded!

L - Poured into a tulip glass. Deep cloudy ruby red with hints of amber where the light shown through. Half inch of white head that dissipated into a thin ring around the edge of the glass.

S - Bursting with ripe sweet cherries on the nose, there was some musty funk lingering about and a healthy dose of oakiness.

T - Follows the nose with the heavy hit of cherry. Not the usual tart mess but a just-bit-into-a-perfectly-ripe-cherry taste, just before the cherry heads into overly ripe sweetness. There's a bit more sweetness in there as well, perhaps a more malty sweetness that blends in. The finish showcases the barrel character with a definite grape skin red wine vibe and and some pronounced oak dryness.

M - Good amount of carbonation with a dry but not lingering finish.

O - One of the best cherry sours I've had to date. Easy to drink, nice balanced acidity, I'd be curious to see what time does to this beer.

    Good Evening folks.
A bit of info before I get into a late NBS brew which will most likely be the last one for awhile.
Some may know Ive been out of work as a Chef for about 3 months now due to Covid19. I was scheduled to start a new job the day the shit hit the fan. Recently I was called and asked to start again under certain conditions which frankly I found "ethical standards" if you will. At the same time my brother who runs a restaurant, concession and food truck in Maine had contacted me about the upcoming summer and how he was finding it impossible to find help with whats going on. Long story short I spent the last week up there and decided to help him for the Summer. 5 doubles and 2 days off with a 4 hour commute one way to get home and take care of my wife and house for a day. Needless to say I wont have much, if any free time.
They close Labor Day so ten weeks of this. Anyhow lets get to this beer, which just so happens to be brewed in Maine. And if youre ever in the Pemaquid Harbor Maine area this summer let me know and come see me.
Marsh Island Brewing Pulp Truck IPA
Pours a slightly hazy golden orange with a 2 finger head that starts out creamy, then gets rocky, and then dissapears leaving almost no lacing.
Aroma is sweet citrus and cotton candy and cannabis.
Taste is OJ all the way with hints of lemon and some tropical pineapple and mango, peach.
Feel is juicy and quite soft but is accentuated by a prickly carbonation that brightens it up quite nicely. Its a fine thirst quenching version of an IPA with a light/medium body- would be a great summer IPA at 6%. I really enjoyed this one. Worth a try for sure and I will be buying more in Maine.
Cheers and have a great week.

Next up is Mør Mør from Brouwerij West. A Belgian quad coming in at 10% ABV. Poured from fridge temp from a can. Pours with lots of head that sticks around. Color is dark brown with a reddish tint. Nose is candy, plums, blackberries, figs, toffee, yeast, and a bit of Christmas spice. Taste is really nice. Definitely a quad. Sweet and bready up front. Toffee, Belgian yeast, dark fruit, malts, and a bit of burnt wood. Maybe a touch of tobacco in there as well. Really well done and very reminiscent of the great quads of Belgium. Mouthfeel is creamy and thick. Aftertaste is sweet and malty. I will definitely seek more out. Cheers!
