Since I haven't participated in a while, I was hesitant to open. But it seems others are a bit sleepy today, so here I am kicking off this weekly thread where we encourage BAs to put their thoughts to keyboard or touch screen about the beer they are drinking. Before you jump in, you should know that it shouldn't be just any beer, no. It should be a beer you are trying for the first time; we are looking for first impressions here. The format is fairly loose, but if you can touch on what you experienced in the categories BeerAdvocate lays out for official reviews, you'll definitely cover all bases.

I have lamented more than complained about not having tried a beer yet from a couple of the highly regarded new-school IPA producers, Trillium and Tree House. I'll get to both of them one of these days, I am sure, but today is the closest I've come to the former - via a collaboration brew with one of my long-time favorite brewers, Dogfish Head.

The beer is called Tru-Action IPA, clocking in at 6.5%. I've seen @VABA posting it in WBAYDN threads and was happy to see there was still some available this week for me to give it a shot.

Weighing my experience with DFH alongside collaborations in general, I'm expecting a solidly made IPA that sits between the sweet spots for those who love hazies and those who prefer a good old school (most likely leaning east coast) IPA. Lets see...

The pour fits into the hazy side of things, shying away from cloudiness enough to let some light through at the edges. Head is pillowy and sticks around. I was getting light fruity aromas as I started my pour, but either I got used to it quickly or it faded by the time the last drop fell into the glass.

Sitting down with said glass to write this post, I have to say this is one of those times where the aromas I get match up decently well with what the producers wrote on their can. The aromas that I get are tropical in nature with pineapple and mango, then some accents of citrus in the form of tangerine with flakes of candied orange and lemon peels. Before my sip, it seems like I might not be getting much bitterness in this, maybe a slight pithy note late.

Note: retroactively adding this, but the aroma strength seems to fade before I'm halfway through the beer.

So, on my first sip I find my guess to be wrong. The beer starts out with a grain and dry bread note with a bitter (citrus pith) lean right off. A hint of pineapple with a light undertone of melon are the closest to sweet notes I can pick out. The middle leading into the end has a more classic grapefruit pith vibe, laced with little mango for a little tang. A little bit of something sweeter in nature laces this before the firm but not overpowering bitter notes wrest control back in a pith/pine finish and linger.

So overall, I was right in that this is solid. I think it fits in more with the first hazy IPAs I had (mainly from Aslin), which continued to have some bitter character combined with more fruitiness and a softer feel. The feel on this one isn't as soft, and while the fruit notes are bright in the nose, they are tempered by bitterness in the taste.

I like it quite a bit, and I'm curious how similar it is to a Trillium beer. I'm not sure of a DFH "NE IPA" even though I did enjoy Liquid Truth Serum (a mostly or heavily late hop-addition beer as they describe it). I wish I had that beer more recently (or on hand now) to pick out any similarities. Maybe at a later date.

Thanks to @Coronaeus for this one. NBS BIF #15
16oz can poured into a Becher glass. Can is stampeded EMP 08/04/22.
This is a very pretty beer. Golden in hue, slightly cloudy, and capped by a firm white cap. Great retention and layered lacing.
Nose is both assertive and delicate. Notes of lemon, wet straw, grain, and bread dough.
Flavors follow the nose faithfully. But this one is so cohesive. The grain base is mildly sweet and provides a smooth canvas for the lemon and floral spice note that peeks in. Slight yeastiness pops in as well.
Mouthfeel is light and crisp. Finish is smooth and delicate in its bitterness.
    Solid.

    Walk like an Egyptian!

Today’s beer is Ommegang Rosetta and while I was familiar with the famous Rosetta Stone I was heretofore unaware that “Rosetta” is the name of a town in Northern Egypt, which is where the stone was found and consequently named the Rosetta Stone.

But is there a meaning towards naming a beer Rosetta? From the Ommegang website:

    “Rosetta

    Sour Ale aged on cherries

The time-honored Belgian tradition of aging and blending fruit beers is lovingly expressed in this lively creation, named for legendary brewmaster Rosa Merckx of Liefmans, our sister blendery in Belgium where this beer is crafted.

A charming combination of Oud Bruin, a tart Flemish brown ale, and Cuvee Brut, a cheerful cherry beer, Rosetta offers elegance, depth, complexity and an intriguing interplay of tartness and sweetness.

    HOPS Hellertau, Magnum

FERMENTABLES Pilsner malt and caramel malt barleys, sucrose

    YEAST Liefmans mixed culture”

    https://www.ommegang.com/beerinfo/rosetta/

OK, so an homage to Rosa Merckx is the answer.

Served in my Heavy Seas tulip glass:

    Appearance:

A deep ruby red color which is rather opaque. A tan head which dissipate quickly.

    Aroma:

Wow! A very pleasant and noticeable aroma of cherry.

    Taste:

The flavor follows the nose with a notable flavor of cherries with a pleasing tartness. The bitterness level is low – moderate.

    Mouthfeel:

Medium bodied, a spritzy/tangy carbonation for the first few sips and a dry finish.

    Overall:

I think this beer is very good – excellent!

Sour beers are typically not in my ‘sweet spot’ (pun intended) but I was a big fan of this beer. It had a very tasty flavor profile and the tart/spritzy aspect was indeed very pleasing for my palate.

    Cheers!

WellBeing Brewing, Going Places IPA International pale ale. Interesting the “I” stands for “International” this time. <0.5% ABV, one pint. Not finding this exact beer on WellBeing’s site. Their Intentional IPA may be close?

Canned 080621, almost a year ago, but comparing to my “best before” beers, these could be expected to stay fresh at least 1.5 years from canning. Sent from Ondernulpuntvijf in the Netherlands. Served at 10°C in my stemmed angled Iittala Essence beer glass.

Appearance: pours pale golden with some haze, one finger white head which is receding quite fast with little lacing, 4

    Aroma: faint, honey? 3.75

Taste: well balanced, not very strong malt/hop character, pleasant aftertaste with lingering hops, 4.25

    Feel: suiting medium carbonation, 4.25

Overall: you understand I like lagers and pale ales like this. Difficult to put the finger on why, it’s just a good experience, this rose to 4.25 during the tasting. Not the slightest off-character, but could the hops have faded some?

Got 4.12 in the rating, my longstanding average for all beers is 4.07, so this beer did good!

Hop Butcher for the World Front Yard Party NEIIPA. The look is what I consider beautiful; soupy, dense, hazy, mustardy, sunshine, lighter yellow. It features a thick, beautiful, white foam hat. The smell is not very strong, but there is definitely scents of cantaloupe, honeydew, white grape, lime, and fresh-cut flowers. The flavor leads with white grape, then follows a path filled with honeydew, kiwifruit, and a bit of watermelon. The mouthfeel is soupy, thick, saucy, and full, with medium carbonation. Overall, this is an interesting hop combination, which works well together. In my experience, Hop Butcher for the World has never failed to create a beer that is incredible. This is no exception.

Thanks to @cjgiant for launching this weekend's thread. I'm chiming in from Nice after a long day of travel from Montpellier. My first new beer of the weekend is La nuit Delicatula from Brasserie des Garrigues in France. A double stout with nothing added.

Poured at just a bit warmer than fridge temp. Pours black with tan head. Head quickly dissipates. Nose delightful and it's no question that this is a classic imperial stout. Quickly getting roasted malt, toffee, dark fruit, tobacco, coffee, and a wonderful layer of dark chocolate.

The taste is intense, burnt toffee, roasted malts, tobacco, coffee grounds, dark chocolate, and black licorice. The mouthfeel is pretty thick. Aftertaste is definitely charred wood. Love it!

Have a good Saturday BA. I am 35 today, had a long week of work at the proto build warehouse(plus 10 hour days). I have to help assemble a crash test vehicle all next week in creo. Still dream job and dream life despite 2 years ago. I went out to the hemp store and got a lot more goodies last night, and I got some free Delta 9 Chocolate for my bday lol. I got some wingstop last night and the hemp store is right next door. Wingstop are the best, I will only go to bdubs if I want a beer with my wings(usually when travelling).

I thought I reviewed this but I guess not? Goose island bourbon county brand Cafe De Olla Stout. Bottled 8/11/2019. This is amazing. Nice head retention and spotty lacing for the ABV. Aromas are muted and a bit boozy as it warms up with notes of coffee, cinnamon, nuts, dark chocolate, molasses, citrus, and dark fruits. Flavors of big dark chocolate, cocoa, medium roast coffee, nuts, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, toffee, toast, brown bread, bourbon, oak; light cherry, dark fruit, molasses, cinnamon, orange peel, smoke, and yeast earthiness. Light herbal/roasted bitterness and oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full body; very creamy/silky/bready malts, light sticky hops, chalky roast, and oak tannins in the mouthfeel. Insanely smooth sipping. Age definitely did great things, but spices and coffee usually dull over time. Barrel is super smoothed out and flavors are perfectly balanced. Coffee isn't nearly as huge as I remember the base coffee stout(or even most coffee stouts, regardless of aging), but at the same time they may have just been doing that to not overpower the spices. Nothing overwhelming. 4.35

Always like a good gose on a summer day, especially after mowing the lawn, and Bruery Terreux’s Goses Are Red lives up to my hopes. Underrated beer, I think. At over a year old, the one I’m drinking still is tart, funky, and salty. It’s got everything I want in the style. Only complaint might be it’s not funky enough, but that’s not the worst thing in the world. The Syrah is present, but perhaps that has faded a bit with age, as I think it could be a bit fruitier. Overall, I want a gose that has character, depth, and is refreshing, and I think this one ticks off those boxes. [IMG]

Soft, semi-opaque lemon yellow body; thick, frothy, sticky white head, rocky and lasting. The scent explodes with light tropical fruits notes and berries; citrus pith. Comparatively mild taste; light lemon suggestion; grapefruit; light bitterness; light malt backbone; touch of phenol. Medium-heavy body; fairly smooth; some alcohol dryness.

The initial impressions immediately impress with opening the can -- just a beautiful medley of fresh fruit and berries. While the taste and mouthfeel drop off a bit, this is still a wonderfully delightful double India pale ale.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

...starting off not too easy, not too hard, with a very approachable modern India pale ale...

12oz bottle bottling date 3/10/22 into a nonic pint glass.
L: Pours dark medieval brown color w/light brown edges, a 1" firm, semi-creamy khaki head that recedes to a thick skin, low carbonation, random light lacing.
S: Cocoa, roasted grains, caramelized malts, lightly floral, very light ripe citrus, a hint of brown sugar.
T: Gentle bitterness then sweet & smooth malts, char, toasted grains, a suggestion of citrus zest, floral. Overall moderately sweet & thin but somehow robust.
F: Smooth, creamy, medium-full bodied mouthfeel w/a medium length moderately drying finish.
O: This beer reminds me of a light milk stout. It's bitterness goes a bit wide in the finish complimenting the sweet milk taste. Easy drinking. It is excellent in it's style.

Good morning/afternoon BAs! Today’s new to me beer I found in a bottle shop in Hilo this week - “Star Jungle” by Modern Times, a Hazy Pilsner with Nelson and Mosaic”:

Canned 5/9/22. A frothy white two fingers of white foam sits atop a pale gold body with excellent clarity; excellent cap retention; medium heavy lacing and heavy ring. Nose is somewhat dank tropical fruit and grape must. Semi sweet biscuit with a schmear of lychee jam; mild grapefruit; part pineapple parts passion fruit and papaya; mild earthy grape must finish. Light body, crisp minus feel; moderate minus carbonation. Overall an awesome tasting beer; the Mosaic plays nice with the Nelson Sauvin which holds up its own end without being skunky or cat pissy on the nose; the beer looks beautiful, but a minor deduction on appearance because “clearly” this beer is not hazy.

I get the whole marketing aspect of trying to sell “hazy” beers to those who seek them out, but I’m seeing more (read larger brewers) beers labeled hazy which are obviously not so…alas, this too will hopefully pass…

Thanks @cjgiant for kicking this off today!

Good afternoon BA, starting with a light dunkel from Modela- Negra to be specific.

I will admit to having higher hopes when I saw this listed as a dunkel, and it’s tasty enough but not, in my untrained opinion a dunkel. Meh.

Poured brown and unfiltered looking- I could see through it but it wasn’t clear.
The aroma was mild, but that’s expected for me. Wee bit of sweetness and malts, bready like.
The taste followed, no hops to be found and the malts tended to the sweet side. Light biscuit flavor and maybe molasses. Simple and unassuming I guess.
The feel was excellent, very crushable indeed.
So likely something I will only order it when not much else is available, but it’s not bad at all. There’s just so much good stuff yet to try,

Next new beer is Mounta Cala Blanche Bio from Brasserie Du Comté in France. Added to the database. A witbier.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a semitransparent yellow/orange with fluffy white head.

The nose is orange, lemon, wheat, vanilla, grass, honey, and a touch of spice.

The taste is very nice. Sweet, but not too sweet. Honey, orange cream, a bit of tree bark, grass, wheat, and fluffy bread. Very nice beer! The aftertaste is a gentle sweetness. Mouthfeel is fairly light. Such a nice and refreshing beer. Crisp.

Back from a walk with the dogs. We started a little later than usual, and it got pretty hot out there. Both dogs and humans need a rest.
I am drinking Oh Mama from Voodoo Brewing. It's not that great a beer, but it sure quenches my thirst.
A clear gold color. Massive white head that dissipates quickly. Some lace.
Not much aroma. Some sweet malt.

From the brewery’s website (with emphasis in bold by me):

“Brewed longer to enhance the flavors, this Munich Dunkel-style Lager gives way to a rich flavor and remarkably smooth taste. Modelo Negra contains Water, Barley Malt, Non-malted Cereals and Hops.”

    https://www.modelousa.com/products/negra

I would be willing to bet that most of the time “non-malted cereals” = corn (but they likely switch to rice when that grain is cheaper).

Despite the brewery’s marketing spiel of “Munich Dunkel-style Lager” this beer is an adjunct lager. I would personally characterize it as being an AAAL (American Amber Adjuct Lager) akin to a beer like Shiner Bock.

I will on occasion drink a Modelo Negra while visiting a local Mexican Restaurant (goes well with tacos and burritos) but then again so does a Shiner Bock or Yuengling Lager for that matter.

    Cheers!
