Dark maroon body, mostly clear; no lasting carbonation. Fairly classic smell of brett and horse blanket; dark, red berry notes. Excellent tart berry flavor; raspberry and blackberry with a bit of cherry; jammy. Heavy mouthfeel with a velvety smoothness; acidic; tart juiciness.

This was a mystery beer from Beer It Forward #16. My initial impression based on the looks and smell was some sort of wild ale with raspberry or blackberry. I'd say I wasn't too far off in my guess. In hind sight, I get some of the woody barrel aging qualities. I can't say I picked up mint but the marionberry (blackberry) was quite evident. Overall, a very nice beer.

Needed something stronger for this afternoon thanks to this putrid performance by the Eagles, so I cracked a barrel aged beer. I finally came across a barrel aged Põhjala beer and am very excited to finally try one of their beers. This is Liquid Piñata - a barrel aged stout barleywine.

Pours a dark brown-black color. Completely opaque. Moderate body based on appearances alone. A thin sudsy khaki colored head forms on the beer, lingers a brief moment, then dissipates leaving just a ring of foam around the edges. Aroma is incredibly complex and really takes some time to acclimate to everything going on here. At first I got the bourbon barrels and that musty oak note coming through, but then the tequila barrel comes through and it instantly became the note that dominates the aroma. Underlying that are some notes of roasted malts, chocolate, vanilla, and a hint of cinnamon.

The taste follows the nose both in its presentation and its complexity. The taste has notes of bourbon, maple, and strong tequila notes. Roasted malts, chocolate, vanilla, dark fruits and tequila. I have to admit, I am not a big tequila fan, so it's really sticking out to my palate. Otherwise there are some sticky malt notes, some maple, and some candied maple. Definitely getting a little barleywine character from that. Feel is medium bodied, smooth, with a moderately warming finish.

Overall it's a really nice beer, very complex and a nice sipper. That being said, as it is, it's one that I am fine with being one and done for me personally.

Man, these Arvon Brewing IPAs from @BigIronH are outstanding! This one is Prank Call - a New England DIPA hopped with Mosaic, Idaho 7, and Simcoe. I can't recall having another IPA with this hop bill and it works really well. It pours a hazy, slightly muddy tangerine color with a thick cap of fluffy, bright white foam and generous lacing. The nose is mostly lemon and grapefruit, along with pine needles and a whiff of berry. But the taste is a lot more complex than the nose would indicate. From the initial sip there is lots of sweet fruit, including red berry and mango. But underlying the fruit is dank, resinous pine and a woody earthiness. The Simcoe provides a clean bitterness throughout. It's extremely well-balanced. The mouth feel is great: nicely creamy with pleasant carbonation, and it's awfully easy to drink for 8.5% ABV.

Those folks in the Grand Rapids area have a gem of a brewery in Arvon. Thank you, Harley, for this thoroughly enjoyable beer!

Greetings all from the great northwest where we are frosty. No precipitation to speak of, with temps in the low 20s and frost still on the trees into the afternoon.

Today we have a Porter from Founders Brewing.

A very good porter with a big dark roasted charcoal flavor.

    Until next time,

I don't believe Ramstein ever bottled the Oktoberfest. It's been canned for a couple of years. I remember it being more complex than this year's. Honestly, I'm disappointed. The whole point of that brewery is German beer. Both @Roguer and @2beerdogs liked Bull n Bear's Von Albrecht a lot more. Jon, I'm not sure where you are in South Jersey but Somers Point Brewing has a really good Oktoberfest called Tony Martzen. They don't distribute their beers so you can only get it at the brewery. If you're in that area during autumn it's worth checking out. Slack Tide brews a pretty good Marzen too. I didn't have it this year but have in the past.

Glad you like them Rob. I really love the beers they put out and have found them to truly be a local gem. They do pretty well in another style too that you will get to try in your next box. Cheers man.

That has less smoke, as the malt isn't smoked. Do try it though. To me, it has just the right amount of smoke for what it is. ymmv
    From the brewery :
"...... Schlenkerla Helles is boiled in the same copper kettles and bottom fermented by the same yeast as the historic Schlenkerla Smokebeer. Its subtle smokiness without using smoke malt makes “Helles Schlenkerla Lager” a unique representative of the classic lager beer style “Bavarian Helles”.

Evening NBSers. Chilly, actually prob the coldest day of year so far.
Been a few weeks so lets get going.
    Turbid Diesel Hazy TIPA
Alvarado Street Brewery courtesy of @Nugganooch
Pours a turbid orange/gold. Nice off white 2 finger head that hangs for a minute leaving spotty lacing.
Juicy orange, passionfruit and apricot on the nose with a bit of fresh pine needles.
Taste follows with juicy citrus, ripe tropicals and peach. Solid malt base provides a bit of balance. Some bitterness on the finish from orange and grapefruit rind.
    Dangerously drinkable for 10.4%
Medium/heavy body. A little slick on the finish.
    Delicious hop juice.
    Thanks Dane!

Courtesy of @WunderLlama Foam Brewing Experimental Jet Set DIPA, 9.2% ABV; 3.97 overall

Pours a very hazed straw with one finger of eggshell colored head. Good head retention & lacing

S: Plenty of citrus juice, nose is sort of muted & one dimensional

T: Follows the nose, dryness, grapefruit, pomelo & passionfruit, sweet orange as well up front. Lime, tangerine & a little green melon as this beer warms up, plus dryness. Finishes with pomelo, grapefruit & lime, some acidic notes

MF: Medium body, fairly firm carbonation, pretty good balance, I could've done with a little more sweetness

ABV is well disguised, very easy to drink

I live in Marlton, right on Main Street, just so you know for if you are ever in the area and want to raid my beer fridge. I don't make it around to breweries much more these days other than Tonewood cause it is so close.

For future reference...noted on Somers Point and Slacktides, my brother in law lives down in Estell Manor, which isn't far from either of those. We plan to make it to the new Slacktide brewery when they are up and running this spring.

PS...when I was driving home from Hartford this summer I was very close to taking the detour to Bull n Bear because of you. Unfortunately it wasn't in the cards on that drive by.

    Hardywood Gingerbread Porter.

This is like a little cousin to their Gingerbread Stout. First heard about it last year down in Richmond, but deferred to the Stout, which is excellent, highly recommended.

Deep brown, as seen, slight foam which goes quick, but some nice lacing.
Aroma not giving me much, a bit of coffee.
First sip, somewhat thin, but I may be harkening back to the Stout.
The finish is smooth, and the spices and Gingerbread come thru.
Typical porter experience, hints of a stout but not as overwhelming. In a good way.
Been waiting for this a long time, worth the wait. Will be interesting to compare to this year's Gingerbread Stout, which I aso picked up.

Yeah, it's hard to live up to your older brother if it's GBS. Although the Bourbon Barrel GBS is like a genetically engineered improvement on the original, in my opinion

This one courtesy of @ovaltine Pipeworks Coconut Phantom Unicorn BA Imperial Stout. 13.2% ABV; 4.01Overall

Pours a fairly sludgy ebony with a sliver of mocha colored head. Some lacing & near zero head retention

S: Coconut, cola, fades as the carbonation dies down

T: Toasted coconut, cola, dark fruits, & molasses up front, plus dryness, from the barrel perhaps?. Coconut, cola & a little dark chocolate, plus dryness as this beer approaches room temperature. Finishes warming, with cola & chocolate notes, plus toasty coconut & dryness

MF: Pretty chewy, low carbonation, warming

Drinks great for the heft, nice flavors
