I also had this beer for the first time this fall and I really agree with your take on it. I definitely agree with your last sentence too.

I may revisit in the fall again when it returns.

I’m without my charger, so hit and run posts until either I return to my hotel or buy a spare.

It is pouring here, so not sure if I’m going far beyond Long Beach today. First stop here as always is this brewery. This is a brewery only release, they have a few sixtels, so should be here a bit if your in the area.

    Beachwood Silver Fern

    Brewery notes:
$8 plus tax 16 oz draft pour. West Coast IPA. Sweet resin, Sauvignon Blanc, Necatrine, Eucalyptus. 7.1% ABV, 56 IBUs.

Appearance: Clear golden pour, minimal carbonation, bright white head leaves generous fine lacing. 4.0

Aroma: Dank pine, citrus and pineapple, bold in strength, enticing in nature. 4.5

    Taste:
Consistent with aroma, dank pine faint citrus, pineapple, and lemongrass. All come together well, wanting to gulp this down. 4.75

Mouthfeel: Dry and resinous, within proper measure. Drinks lighter than the ABV, faint carbonation felt as well as seen, faint dry pine lingers pleasurably on the finish. 4.5

Overall: This is an approachable WCIPA to new adherents. Hits everything I expect, manageable and balanced, bursts with aroma and flavor. This is an excellent offering. Highly recommend; Beachwood so expected but definitely appreciated. 4.75

Should have a few more up my sleeve the next two days.

Good Afternoon everyone! Congratulations on the wedding @MacMalt! We're celebrating over here today as my sister-in-law got engaged this morning and we have a party to meet her fiancé's family later this afternoon. I will be drinking some nice vintage 2018 Schramsberg - Blanc de Noirs today - picked up that as its the year they started dating. I will spare y'all the new champagne review though.

My first new beer this weekend is one of two I am very excited for - they both come from a Brewery that is rapidly rising up my ranks of favorite breweries in IL - Roaring Table Brewing Company. They were just recently featured as one of the 5 best Suburban Chicago breweries in one of Josh Noel's last articles for the Tribune. They do a wide range of styles - from their award winning saisons, to their RT series of traditional lagers, to IPAs and fruited sours - and they do them really well. More recently they have started canning some traditional English styles. This one is Warbler Vivant a "dark pub ale". It checks in at 3.5% ABV and is brewed with East Kent Golding hops. To give you an idea of how drinkable this is - I already finished one can - and I haven't even started writing up my review of it yet.

Pours a dark reddish brown color. Excellent clarity when held up to the light. Thick, somewhat velvety tan colored head forms on the beer, lingers a bit, then dissipates. Just a thin layer of residual foam ultimately remains. The aroma on this is lovely - notes of nutty malts, some light cocoa, maybe a touch of pumpernickel bread, with a light roastiness, some slight spiciness and a fleeting whiff of toffee.

The taste is just as lovely - notes of lightly toasted pumpernickel bread, nutty malts, cocoa, some light spiciness on the finish and again a hint of sweetness that is reminiscent of toffee. There is so much depth of flavor and complexity here in a beer that is only 3.5% ABV - a lovely reminder that higher ABV is not directly correlated to more flavor. Feel is light, smooth, and easy drinking. Most importantly for a pub ale - it is repeatable or sessionable - a beer I could and want to drink all day.

Overall this is a homerun - I've found the canned mild ale I've wanted for a while now. THis probably would be perfect 5s across the board if it was on cask and I was drinking it by the pint. As it is canned - its a world class beer from Roaring Table.

Drekker/Brewing Projekt collab Please Accept Our Sacrifice of Fruit Pizza fruited sour, 6.7% ABV. Pours thick and opaque maroon with a half-finger pink head that left puree residue. Nose is strawberry, cream cheese, and sugar cookies. Taste follows plus orange, moderately sweet, slightly tart, with cream cheese and cookies on the close. Indecent thick and smooth mouthfeel, overall outstanding. The cream cheese and sugar cookies really steal the show.

Fairly newly available brewery to my area. Recently had Sea Hag and very much liked that so I figured I would pick up a couple of new to me singles from them. This is one of them. Its nice that I have a fairly local beer shop that allows you to buy singles of everything. Just wish that they didnt charge a premium for breaking up 4/6 packs. Oh well...

Tad lighter than medium body. Fairly opaque orange appearance with a nice frothy head with decent retention.
Aroma is grapefruit and some berries.
Taste is mostly citrus, unsweetened grapefruit, also get some subtle berries and pine.
Finish has a nice bitter pine bite to it that is fairly dry and lingers.
To me this a really nice well made balanced IPA! Should have bought a 6 pack!

12oz can canned 11/01/22 into a pint glass.
L: Pours medium hazed light apricot w a 1/2" smooth eggshell white head, OK retention to edge foam, low carbo, no lacing. Traces of very light sediment.
S: Light citrus, a hint of peach, melon rind, caramelized malts, light cheesy funk.
T: Melon rind, fresh OJ, lemon zest, tangy and resinous, a hint of buttery sweet caramel, a trace of pie crust, peach, light pineapple, a hint of berries, full-flavored, quite resinous, zesty and tart overall, quick moving tastes in the middle. A hint of yeast with warming. Quite pleasant.
F: Lively & lightly juicy medium-bodied soft feel w a long saturating finish and a medium linger. It is slightly drying.
O: Happy to have this in a 12oz serving. It is tangy, lightly sweet and resinous. A wholesome and full-flavored fruity American IPA that drinks quite easily for its ABV. It is very good in its style.

I typically don’t buy guest beers at a great brewery, but I make exceptions for beers not available in Chicago, and this is a prime example.

    Russian River Consecration

    Brewery Notes:
$9.50 plus tax 10 oz draft pour.

Appearance: Draft cylinder pour, dark bronze clear base, creamy egg white generous cover over the base. 4.5

    Aroma:
Wonderful sour fruit medley, cherry the predominant, backed by the wonderful red wine barrels. Absolutely wonderful. 4.75

    Taste:
Mirrors aroma, cherry red wine, perfect amount of sourness. Sweetness and sourness are perfect equilibrium. Wow. 4.75

Mouthfeel: Nicely dry, sweet fruit balanced expertly against sourness. The oak comes through well, drinks so light and easy, but deceptive like a cheating spouse. Perfect. 5.0

Overall: So glad I ordered this. Likely my only sour on the trip as few if any can top this. Perfect blend of sweetened and sour, so light and easy, could get in trouble if I had regular access. Highly, highly recommend. 4.75

I'm into my 2nd full weekend of dry January and I've lost 5lbs. So here's another NA beer, Jumbo Juicy IPA from Athletic. This is one of their pilot program series so it has limited availability.

Poured from a 12oz can stamped PACKED 12/06/22 to a Nonic at fridge temperature.
The body is a pale yellow translucent haze with plenty of light brightening it. A pure white ½” head diminishes to a single bubble layer, and provides some light lacing. Bubbles near the side of the glass are visible after every sip tilt.
The aroma is musty with a tropical/citrus background.
The taste has those two aroma features reversed. There is citrus pith and peel and a lemon juice finish. This could pass as a 3-4.5 ABV beer in my opinion.
Mouthfeel however is super light and the carbonation is pretty prominent. Their website actually refers to this as a milkshake IPA, but I'm not getting that at all.
Overall, it's far from a “real” NEIPA, especially with that mouth feel, but the taste is there.

I hear, and I obey. If there is an ovaltine sweet spot, it is the crushable, piney WCDIPA. I think my secondary local has it, so I shall secure some. Thanks for the heads up, Jon.

Medium-dark amber body, clear; moderate, slow-rising carbonation; then yet lasting head, creamy and sticky; thin sheets of foam cloak the glass interior. Incredible flavors; rich, decadent caramel and toffee notes; light brown sugar; decent amount of bitterness offsetting the heavy sweetness; moderate yet tamed boozy undercurrent; earthy esters. Heavy body; dense and velvety; big yet gentle alcohol warmth; clinging residual sugars coat the palate; slight undercurrent of dryness.

Wow! This fantastic malt-bomb is the bomb!! There is a heavy presence of thick, earthy malt goodness nicely counterpointed with a decent hop presence with a sneaky high-voltage note of alcohol coursing through the beers dense depths. Well-rounded and powerful, very tasty.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

...I didn't realize this beer is barrel aged until reading the bottle label...I haven't found any specifics about what kind of barrel-aging was done, and truth be told, other than some after-the-fact mental thought that 'there may be some oak in the taste', I honestly can't say anything really jumped out at me as far as barrel aging...time to query the brewery to find out more...

7.5% Scottish ale by Three Floyds

Poured from a twelve ounce bottle, body is coffee black with small initial head that rapidly dissipated. No lacing of significance.

Nose and taste are a pleasant mix of coffee and malt. Malt gives the heft to pull this one off. No sign of the ABV. No notes of smoke, peat or hops - a faithful example of the style.

Carbonation is modest and mouthfeel is good.

Very drinkable Scottish ale that would move to outstanding in my book with a wee bit of body and ABV. Sill, this one's a braw brew.

    Stella Artois Liberté
11.2oz green bottle Best Before 30MAY23 poured into a Stella Artois chalice at fridge temp with 0.0% ABV claimed on the label instead of the usual >0.5. The beer pours brilliantly bright pale gold with nearly white head. The head recedes to a thin ring and island leaving behind quite a bit of patchy lacing. The aroma is mild with sweet pale malt and a hint of skunk. The taste is semisweet pale malt with a hint of wort before a lightly bitter, lightly skunky finish. The mouthfeel is thin bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, excellent NA beer. I would prefer this to most macro light lagers.

This one and the Heineken are the best light style NAs that I've tried and both are in the stupid green bottles. I'm not a huge fan of the skunk, but it's less icky than diacetyl, which I loath.

    Cheers all!

    Hello New Beer Weekend!!!

On the road today in Dundas, MN at Chapel Brewing, and enjoying this

    Brown Ale - 5.2% ABV.

This reminds me more of an English style. There's a pleasing bitterness that comes in on the backside. Caramel, cereal, nutty. Quite delicious.

The pour is a very clear brown. The had is minimal from the tap. White head.
The aroma is malty. Quite cereal like. Notes of nuts.
Taste. I get a ton of caramel in this beer. There's a cereal flavor, but much less than the nose. Slight nutty flavor on the back, and a bit of hops on the back.
Decent body. Crisp feeling. Smooth up front. The feeling of the bitterness from the hops linger.
    Tasty and delicious overall.

Ok, I will be back later, maybe even at my brother in law's 50th birthday party. Cheers all.
