Onto another one now that nothing else needs to be done (at least I think) for the day.

    Cheers to @snaotheus !

    Wayfinder - Luna Muerta

Poured at fridge temp into a weizen glass.

Pours a very pretty and changing clear brass color with a lingering and sticky white head, and even left some nice lacing. 4.5

Gently sweet with some nice malty aroma. 4

Sweet, slightly nutty and a touch of toastiness. Malty with some accent hops. 4

Fairly dry finish, but nice and light as well. 4

Overall the color and appearance stood out to me the most though flavor and body were well balanced. 4

cheers to @hopley for this Bissel Brothers Nothing Gold DIPA, 8.25% ABV; 4.16 overall

Pours a super-hazed gold/honey with one finger of cream colored head. Pretty good lacing & head retention

S: Plenty of oranges, papaya, fades a touch as this beer warms up.

T: Grapefruit, tangerine, lime & a little dryness, plus some kiwi fruit up front. Dryness & straight juice as this beer warms up, also passion fruit & green melon. Finishes mostly bitter, grapefruit, lime, blood orange & dryness, also some citric acidity

MF: Medium body, restrained carbonation, great balance

Very much the juice, bomb; I do like them a little sweeter, but feel lucky to have tried this. ABV is well hidden

Poured at fridge temp into a weizen glass.
    Canned 1.27.23

Pours a dark brownish but has some light amber and dark copper tones up to the light and at the ends. Small and dense bubbled head that settled into a thin ring. 4

Light smoke aroma with noticeable caramel malts. 4

The level of smoke is perfect first of all. Not too strong and not overwhelmed by the caramel and slight nutty notes as well. The playful peek of booze actually compliments it even more. 4.5

Medium body, slight alcohol burn and even, but lighter carbo. 3.75

Overall probably my second favorite Rauch (compared to a local lichtenhainer) that is balanced and not too or overly smoked. 4.25

Smell- Floral, grassy, clove, medium strength of scent.

Taste- Grassy, slight lemon, slight pear, clove, mild sweetness, moderate bitterness, medium strength of flavor.

Feel- Medium body, slightly above average carbonation, highly dry finish, moderately bitter.

Overall- Pale gold with plentiful visible particulate and above average head retention and lacing. Bouquet was medium in strength with floral and grassy character. Flavor was grassy, slight lemon, slight pear and moderately bitter. Feel was medium bodied with slightly above average carbonation and a highly dry finish. Overall this beer was average and does not merit a repurchase.

    Great Divide yeti-Gingerbread, 9.25% ABV; 4.25 overall

Pours an effervescent chestnut with a pinky of mocha colored head. Average head retention & good lacing

S: Classic Gingerbread smells in spades

T: Plenty of dryness, then gingerbread flavor onslaught, but in a natural way, kust a little booze bite too, seems to actually make me like it more, some faint cola notes as well up front. More gingerbread & a touch of cola & booze warmth, some woody hops & sarsaparilla. Finishes a little dry, a little boozey & with plenty of Gingerbread

MF: Medium body, fairly firm carbonation, warming. Body thickens as this beer came to room temperature & carbonation dialed back

Drinks good, wish there was a little something to counter the featured flavor, a bit more, but this is one of the few beers of this ilk I would consider buying again

    Hello New Beer Weekend!!!

Tonight I am at Head of the Lakes resort at Lake Osakis in Osakis, MN for some ice fishing. Sadly, we only caught one very small bass, which was out of season. Hopefully tomorrow is better.
Now to the beer, and it goes with a lake theme.
Pig Lake Peanut Butter Porter- 14 Lakes Brewing- Crosslake, MN- 7.5% ABV.

Not a bad beer, but the bitterness on the back really doesn't seem to work for this beer for me.

    3.74/5 rDev 0%
    look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.75
Poured from a crawler purchased at the brewery. The beer pours a nice dark brown pour. No light comes through when held up to the light. The head seemed to almost look like a nitro. It's a 3 finger off white head. The retention is decent, and there's great lacing on the glass.
The nose is a nice roasty peanut butter.
The flavor is malty biscuit right away. The middle is where the peanut butter kicks in. The back turns to a bitter flavor from the hops used. This bitterness does seem a bit out of character for this beer.
The body is decent. The feeling from the bitterness does linger.
The beer does taste good for the most part, but the bitterness just doesn't seem quite right.

See you all tomorrow for more.

Roughtail Brewing Captain Crash West Coast Style DIPA, 8.25% ABV; 4.25 overall

Pours an effervescent honey color with one finger of cream-colored head. Stellar lacing & above average head retention

S: Dankness, & a little orange. Nose drops off a bunch as this warms

T: Grapefruit, cakeyness, pine & lime up front, along with dryness. Lime, pine, dryness & grapefruit as this beer warms up, a little bit of malt sweetness as well. Finishes with grapefruit, pine, lime & sweet orange

MF: Medium body, pretty firm carbonation, great balance

Checks all the boxes for the style & is pretty darn drinkable

This evening I am doing a side by side of two local examples of an extremely rare style. So rare that it's actually kind of crazy that two local breweries released examples of the same style around the same time. Rotbier is a historic bottom fermented style from Nürnberger land in Bavaria. It dates back to the Middle ages when it was brewed alongside a "white beer" that was top fermented. At its height of popularity in the 16th century, 35 breweries in Nuremberg brewed "red beer". Over time it all but died out before regaining some popularity about 20 years ago. Today rotbier is brewed by the Altstadthof brewery, the Schanzenbräu Nuremberg-Gostenhof brewery, the Bruderherz brewery, and Tucher Bräu.

Goldfinger Brewing recently brewed and released a rotbier as part of a collaboration with Is/Was Brewing. Around the same time Roaring Table Brewing Company released their rotbier called Thither They Return

    Goldfinger - Rotbier

Pours a lightly cloudy amber color. Thick, frothy off-white head forms on the beer, lingers a while, then slowly, almost imperceptibly dissipates until no residual head remains. Aroma has notes of sweet bready malts, doughy malts, earthy straw notes, and some subtle grassy hops.

Taste follows the nose with those bready, doughy malts coming through up front. There is a light honey sweetness to the flavor profile that lingers. There are notes of straw and some grassy hops on the back end.

Overall it's a very drinkable, tasty lager. Kind of a cross between a helles and a vienna lager?

    look: 4.5 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5 = 4.5 (rDev +3.2%)

Roaring Table Brewing Company - Thither They Return

This one pours a dark reddish brown color. Thin khaki colored head forms on the beer, lingers for a while, then dissipates until no residual head remains. Aroma has notes of lightly roasted malts, some nutty malts, and a touch of grassy hops.

Taste is very malty, the roasted malts are very subtle and the nutty malts play a much bigger role in the profile, There is a touch of malty sweetness, some spicy herbal hops and a bit of cocoa. Feel is crisp but medium bodied for such a light lager. Moderate carbonation. Its supremely drinkable. Semi-dry on the back end.

Overall this one is also quite good, but it ends up skewing closer to a Czech dark lager or a schwarzbier.

    look: 4 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25 = 4.24 (rDev +4.2%)

    ___________________

With the gigantic caveat that I have not had the original rotbier from Altstadthof, so my ability to nail down what the style should taste like is limited, the Goldfinger version seemed more in line with what I was expecting from the style based on what I had read online. RT's, while very good, was more of a CDL or schwarz and had elements (the roasted malts) that were never mentioned in the style descriptions. I will give the nod to Goldfinger tonight, but am left wishing I could get a chance to taste the "original" from Altstadthof.

I fell asleep before adding this last night. We had a late dinner of homemade pizza at my wife’s request last night. I thought Bellwoods’ new lager would be a good option. I find their lagers to be generally very good to excellent, so was eager to give this one a go. They’ve switched up the yeast from some earlier offerings.

    Bellwoods Premium Pilsner.

Pours a bright bubbly gold with ample lasting head.

Light cereal aromas. Slightly floral. Appealing.

Taste follows. Light grain, floral and herbal notes. Gentle bitterness. Clean, crisp. Highly drinkable with a subtle sweetness.

    Light bodied. Higher carbonation.

The sweetness takes this off the pinnacle of Bellwoods lagers for me, but still very good and paired great with this fine pizza.

    Nice win.

I don’t suppose you are getting the Auston Matthews RBC bank adverts on tv down there?
I’ll try to find a link to them for you. They are kind of amusing.

Good morning NBS and thanks for hosting this week @NorsemanOne.
Today being the last astrononical day of winter I thought this offering from our dear friends in Greensboro seemed appropriate.
A beautiful and well execeuted stout, with plenty of depth.
    Cheers all

    Song Of Winter

    American Stout | 6.3% ABV
Hill Farmstead Brewery in Greensboro Bend, Vermont

Poured from a 16 oz can, dated 2/14/23 into the test glass.
A - Deep dark brown backdrop hides whats happening. Evidence of gentle carbonation is in the form of a tight knit, lite mocha cap. As the experience progresses a ring of same tight knit clings to the glass wall.
S - A melange of char, cocoa powder, dark roast coffee, with some warming, the cocoa is more pronounced.
T - Notes of coffee, cocoa, like a strong mocha. Theres a great grounding center of roast malt.
M - Medium in body, a nice bite to the middle, with a lovely dry finish.
O - A very good stout, with plenty of depth, nuance. No gimmicks, simply a very good chocolate stout.

Welcome one and all to the 943rd edition of New Beer Sunday! Still deeply emersed in the tournament. No, not that tournament, the 2023 First Annual March Beer Madness Tournament. We are counting down to the Beer Champion, and hope you can join us to enjoy great beers and crown a Beer Advocate March Beer Madness Champion.

I believe I have tried this beer before, and certainly rated similar beers such as King Sue. I don't have a formal rating for this beer, but that chances now. Also, if anyone knows the style name of this glass, I would appreciate your input. I am calling it a nucleated pint glass at the moment.

    Toppling Goliath Pseudo Sue

    Can Notes:
Purchased 3/15/23 at Beer on the Wall at store temperature, $3.75 for the single 16 oz canned 1/26/23 @ 8:13:38. 5.8% ABV, Pale Ale. Brewed in beautiful Decorah, Iowa by Toppling Goliath. Brewing up history with Field Museum. Unfiltered beer, sediment is normal.

This single-hop pale ale showcases the Citra Hop for a well-balanced beer that is delicate in body with a mild bitterness in the finish. Ferocious hop aromas of citrus and mango give a refreshing taste that is bright with just enough bite.

    Appearance:
Original pour and a few more top off pours into a nucleated pint glass. Hazy orange juice base, generous creamy head that leaves generous creamy lacing and substantial cover over the base. Base too hazy to view carbonation beyond the top of the pour (mild). Consistent with the style. 4.25

    Aroma:
Bold full sweet fruit, freshly squeezed orange juice, tangerines, mango and dank pine. Wonderful. 4.5

    Taste:
Consistent with the style, but a bitterness accompanies leaving a nice balanced and enjoyable beer throughout. Really digging the citrus grapefruit tangerine pine interplay going on. Well crafted, digging this. 4.25

    Mouthfeel:
Edges sweet, but nice balance with a consistent bitterness throughout. A soft pillow body, nice easy drinking, even below the 5.8% ABV. Slightly dry, more sweet than bitter, barely noticeable carbonation, sweet and dry finish. 4.5

    Overall:
This is a very nice, light and easy but packed with excellent flavor offering. Really like the accessibility, perfect offering for a new craft drinker or a veteran who is looking for a beer packed with flavor but approachable, soft and easy like Sunday Morning. I need to consider TG more in the future, as their IPAs are consistently very good to excellent. This is among their finest. 4.5

Have another classic planned for next weekend that has been already knocked out of the tournament. Like this one, I believe I had it before, had similar offerings by the same brewery, and I'm really hoping it turns out like this one. These beers are classic and popular for a reason.

    Cheers!

Always always loved the simplicity and symmetry of their label. Something about the colors and placement of your picture that really accentuates its beauty to me. Cheers fellow winter lover :beers:

Winter was absent for the most part this year down here but she’s showing one last time this weekend before we hit some nice 60 degree days this week.
