    Cross post with WBAYDN.

Went for a walk in the rain, and wound up at Grain Shed's taproom on Cedar, and am having my 2nd pilsner of the day, their SteamPipe Pilsner.

Unlike the one from Ozark, it's primarily grainy in flavor (Grain Shed's all about the malts, if the name didn't give it away). It's not bad but nowhere as good as the Luda Crisp.

The Cedar Dog (hotdog encased in croissant dough) is unfortunate looking...

Having Appalachian Walker from Olde Hickory courtesy of @CarolinaCardinals thanks Tom! This is brandy barrel aging done right.

The boozy grapes are prominent but not alone. I also get plenty of sweet dried fruit, brown sugar, cocoa, plums, and maybe almonds? There is some bitterness coming in at the finish, mostly wood I think but some hops as well perhaps. The exhale is dry red wine. Excellent barleywine that's been on my radar for some time now, thanks Tom!

Sampling another new west coast beer to me, courtesy of @snaotheus as part of NBS BIF #17. Quite the haul of west coast beers so far, Ill keep sharing the results with everyone!
This Buoy Beer Co out of Astoria, Oregon and their Helles Lager. A 5.3% helles.

Sampling a cellar temp 16 oz can poured into my .5L dimple mug. Date stamp is 12/15/2022 Batch #55.
The beer pours a bright clear golden color, with a bleached white densely packed head of 2 cm foaming up on the pour. This foam fades to a wispy surface covering and I get some scattered lattice when I swirl the glass.
the aroma is grainy malt and a bit of bready note mixing with grassy hops and a bit of spicy note as well. No hint of the ABV.
First sip reveals a light body with crisp texture and very fine, gentle carbonation. Beer dries out on the swallow and leaves my mouth feeling empty.

Flavor is grainy malts and a bit of sweeter cereal type flavor. I also get grassy and spicy hops on the finish that leaves a slight bite on the finish. Never any hint of booziness.

The beer is a fine drinker and easy sessionable with a decent amount of flavor. I would think this makes a perfect beach beer.

    Neshaminy creek rough puff
    ....motor oil black appearance
....light carbonation, just above average body with a very slight creamy feel.
.....coffee,wood, malt, hard to pick up more as the aroma isn't overpowering.
....taste has a very mild sweetness, coffee, chocolate, and roasted malt.
....overall its very good, hard to pin down the flavor profile but very enjoyable [IMG]

Stonecloud Brewing Tim's Moving Up Triple Hazy IPA, 9.3% ABV; 4.17

With Azzaca, Mosaic, Strata & Simcoe Hops
Pours a very turbid gold/homey color with one finger of pearl colored head; some floaties. Great lacing & good head retention

S: Some citrus, a touch of tropical fruits, nose could be better

T: Tangerine, guava, passion fruit, dryness, green melon & pink grapefruit up front. Grapefruit, dryness, passion fruit & sweet orange as this beer warms up, some Kiwi Fruit too. Finishes with grapefruit. tangerine, dryness. lime & passion fruit

MF: Medium body, fairly creamy carbonation, nice balance

Super drinkability, nice juiciness, ABV is deceptive. Stonecloud is the best IPA produced in Oklahoma these days or is at least the equal of Roughtail

This brewery recently started distro to my area. Recommended to me by the beer guy at a local gas station/mini mart that has a great beer selection.

Underground Beer Lab, East Syracuse NY. Quantum Computation 7.0% ABV NEIPA

Good looking beer. Looks like a thick pineapple slushy. Has a nice frothy 1 &1/2 inch head that slowly fads to a nice ring. Also has great lacing.
Aroma is orange juice and tangerines/clementines.
Mouthfeel is soft with a medium body. Has a hint of carbonation.
Taste is juicy semi-sweet orange juice, clementines, pineapple and stonefruits.
Finish is excellent; has some nice bitter oranges that stick to the tongue.
This is very good/excellent, glad I bought a 4 pack. A definite re-buy and also looking forward to trying other offerings from this brewery!

16oz can enjoy by date 8/18/23 into a nonick pint glass.
L: Pours lightly hazed deep golden caramel w a 1" rounded off white head that has VG retention down to a very thick skin, fine steady carbo bubbles, thick lacing w sheeting and decent banding.
S: Melon, grapefruit, lightly floral, background caramel malts, a hint of fruit. Quite simple & light.
T: Sweet caramelized malts, light citrus, citrus zest, melon, light mango, grapefruit, has a med-long mellow resinous finish and finishes a tad bit sweet.
F: Brisk, semi-juicy med-light bodied w an airy middle and a med-length moderately drying and incredibly soft, smooth, creamy & plush finish.
O: Crisp, lightly sweet, smooth & luscious with a 5 star finish. Incredibly plush. A moderately full flavored and fruity HIPA that is very EZ drinking. It's mothership Saga IPA is an outstanding American IPA and this follows suit with a win.

2nd beer of the night. this is also courtesy of @snaotheus as part of NBS BIF #17. Thank you! its Monkless Belgian Ales and their The FNG Belgian style abbey ale, 8.0%. Brewery is in Bend , Oregon.
The FNG is the F*#kin New Guy, by the way. Nice to do a Belgian beer as this realm doesnt often get into my rotation.

Sampling a cellar temp 16 oz can. Date stamp is batch # 518. Pouring into my chalice, the beer pours a deep rich mahogany color, with some ruby highlights, very nice looking color. Almost no light passes through my glass when held to a light source.
Very minimal beige head foams up and I almost get the entire can into the glass. A very thin surface covering remains throughout the sampling.
Aroma is fairly sweet with some general candi sugar notes, a bit of caramel and some raisin and general fruitiness. I also get a little clove. There is an interesting floral note in there too. No hints of the ABV, which at 8% is pretty impressive.
First sip reveals a medium body with very fine and slightly tingly carbonation. The beer is smooth textured and rolls easily across my palate.
Flavor is fairly sweet with caramel and toffee mixing with some cloves and a hint of black pepper bite on the finish. I get some raisin too and the floral note has a flavor too. Im not sure what flowers taste like really, but that is what Ive come up with here. Pretty drinkable for an 8% beer. Glad to have tried this one.

I've had that beer on three occasions, and every time it's been old as shit and has tasted accordingly. I wanna support them, especially after their hardships in recent times, but, damn, it's been hard to do.

@Ozzylizard sent me a puzzler in NBS BIF #17: Corner Slice, a 14.5% abv carrot cake beer from Hoppin' Frog. I immediately chilled this one for consumption, because it's so odd and because I love carrot cake.

16oz can served in a big snifter. Best by Feb 16, 2026.

Pours a murky orange-brown with very little head. Looks fairly still, and quite thick. Smell is pretty legit carrot cake batter. Carrots, maybe raisins, some kind of spice -- I think nutmeg. Maybe some vanilla cream.

Taste is moderately sweet, a bitterness that seems to come from a spice (again, maybe nutmeg), very noticeable booziness, strong vanilla.

Mouthfeel is thick, sticky. Overall...it's hard for me to nail down thoughts on this. I've had some pretty out there beers, but this is pretty next level "out there."

It's weird, and it's going to take some time to get through this. If I suddenly recognize something or things change as it warms up, I'll report back.

    Thanks, @Ozzylizard!

I have been busy today. I thought I would start tonight with the Logic bomb from Surly—a juicy nose with floral and grass hints. The appearance is above average, with excellent head retention. The flavors do not match the nose. The juiciness falls to the way sided. Overall a decent beer. 3.75

Good evening, new beer folks. It's the end of the weekend but not yet the end of the beer here on the west coast. This is a brand new beer which helps solidify my love for a perhaps underappreciated Portland brewery:

Zoiglhaus Dortmunder for Doernbecher (collaboration with Old Standby Brewing of Salem, OR)

Purchased at Belmont Station this afternoon. Date stamp reads "CANNED ON 03/16/2023 #2020 FROM PDX, OREGON WITH LOVE".

    Look:
A bright, slightly hazy deep gold body capped with creamy white foam that displays great retention. Leaves plenty of intricate lacing.

    Smell:
Luscious bready malt with excellent depth. Moderately sweet. Underpinned by lovely floral noble hops and a piquant hit of sulfur.

    Taste:
Follows the nose by leading with malt that is clean, bready and rich but not heavy. Mild sweetness tempered by floral hops with firm but unobtrusive bitterness. Flavors of lightly toasted rustic breadcrust with delicate notes of clover honey and a gentle mineral character in the aftertaste. Superb malt/hop balance.

    Feel:
Medium-bodied with finely textured carbonation. Smooth with a crisp, drying finish.

    Overall:
A delightful beer, and a fine example of an unfortunately rare style. Even better, all net profits from this beer benefit the Doernbecher Children's Hospital here in Portland. Zoiglhaus makes outstanding lagers, and deserves a spot in the upper tier of PNW lager specialists such as Chuckanut, Wayfinder, and Heater Allen.

Hard to say...there's a powerful sweetness to it, but there's enough spice / bitterness that it doesn't come across as super sweet. But that could be just me.
