    Kemker Kultuur - Gentiana

Wild Gruit Ale with gentian root, lemon verbena and bog myrtle, aged in red wine barrels, from Germany (6.9%).

Pours a cloudy, deep golden amber coloration with a large, fluffy head. Smells of doughy malt and strong herbal aromas of bog myrtle and lemon verbena, with hints of tannic oak and mild funk coming through as well.

Taste is an excellent balance of doughy malt and strong herbal notes of bog myrtle, with that typical, light anise character, lemon verbena, with a certain citrus zest note and gentian root, bringing a distinct bitterness to the table, as well as quite tannic oak and subtle, musty funk. Finishes with a medium sourness, medium/strong bitterness and some strong herbal notes and tannic oak lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

I haven't had anything from Kemker in a while and this brew really made me realize how much I missed their stuff. A fantastic barrel-aged Gruit with intense and vibrant herbal notes and a great balance of bitterness and sourness, with that tannic oak and subtle funk working quite well with the flavor profile here and really enhancing the drinking experience. Such a fragrant aroma of bog myrtle and lemon verbena to this as well, that just makes you want to keep smelling this beer before every sip.

That is awesome! The 50 states thing. And I think it was @russpowell who sent me one of those a few BIFs ago. I remember thinking it was pretty amazing. Good beer to finish the journey with!

Deschutes The Abyss 2017 Reserve BBA Imperial Stout, 11.4% ABV. Pours thick and black with a real nice three-finger medium-brown head that was sturdy, ultimately leaving lots of foamy lacing. Nose is bourbon, licorice, oak, and moleasses. Taste follows, faintly sweet, slightly bitter, slight bourbon burn. Excellent mouthfeel, overall Excellent, and improving as it warms. Nicely complex.

Found this bottle just sitting on the shelf...why not.

    Turvebol, Lambic, 9.7% ABV

Brouwerij 3 Fonteinen & Café-Brouwerij Loterbol Tuverbol is a blend of 3 Fonteinen Lambik with Loterbol Blond.

    A 2021 bottle.

Opens with a big POP. A bubbly, foamy white head pours out. It becomes manageable after a minute. A hazy orange/yellow color. The foam gently recedes to a ring that sticks throughout. Spotty patches of lace.
Aroma is big musty basement like Funk, oak and vanilla all mingle and dance together. More of a toasted malt character with dried citrus fruit aromas.
Taste wise, that musty basement funk, oak and vanilla are all up front. More toasted malty flavors, some sweetness, with just a hint of dried citrus/fruity acidity. For a Lambic, I was expecting more of the tart/acidic character to come through. Though still very nice.
A medium to full body. At first, spritzy and crisp carbonation. Though that smooths out, would like a drier finish. I do get some vanilla like characters that others haven't mentioned in reviews, while thats not necessarily sweet it does give the illusion of sweetness, but small grips. The alcohol is noticeable, and very high for a Lambic. Though still something I'm enjoying sipping on.

I'm not sure I have had a Lambic like this before. The high ABV makes this a sipper, but a really enjoyable one. The acidic/tart/sourness isn't nearly as prominent as others in the style. Instead, the funk, malts and the oak have more of a presents. All that said, its still very intriguing, and...whats that word again...oh yeah, enjoyable. Definitely recommended for something a bit different with the style.

Overall score is 4.03, A- from me.

Come gather round people wherever you are, and admit that it's the time for a new beer, and accept it that soon you'll be having some fun, for the time is newwwww beeeer wee-ee-ee-kend...

Today's lovely new beer comes courtesy of one of favorite super mods, the one and only @FBarber. He sent me some beer I think 3-4 weeks ago that disappeared from tracking, we had all lost hope, but then I got this picture while I was at work earlier this week...

Good old USPS finally got it to me, each beer that made it was individually bagged up by USPS still wet with, at this point horribly smelling old beer, I gave them all a bath and they were as good as new. This was one of those beers, a new to me brewery and beer, love the name and labels too...let's see what the insides are all about cause it is what's inside that counts, we all know this, the good people that we are...

Art History - Varitace (Czech Dark Lager 4.8%)

Appears black on the pour but holding bright light revels darkest of browns and some nice clarity on the edges; light brown head, initially very attractive but quickly recedes to not much but a ring and some islands of film.

Nose has a decent dose of roast, pick up some earthiness in the form a dried leaves, some lightly burnt lighter bread, watered down cocoa.

Taste starts out just with a really nice malt presence but it doesn’t present itself as dark at first; it then slowly evolves from lightly unsweetened chocolate to watered down earthy coffee, some of those burnt notes you get from some dark roasts…the aftertaste is pleasantly more chocolate like with some of that lingering roast.

Great feel on this beer, it’s light but full and has a creaminess to it, medium carbonation with some burnt bitterness on the finish, no sweetness to speak of; clean and dry finish.

This one is up there with Karluv for me @FBarber really really loved it. Thanks for sending my way. Up next a lighter lager…cheers friend.

    ------------------------

Been a wild and crazy filled weekend thus far that started the seduced I got home Friday; all amazing fun family time but man am I dead. It is nice to pull out a beer from one of you and enjoy it together.

@snaotheus hope you have a fun trip with the Mrs. and get a break from the kiddos that you'll miss and want to return home to, only to quickly say "we need another vacation..."

@lordofthewiens hope your wife heals fast and without pain.

@beergoot congrats on hitting all 50 states for beer, now you have to start of list of drinking a beer in all 50 states and hit the ones where you haven't enjoyed one  I'll take care of NJ if it hasn't been done yet.

    Clear copper. Sudsy head.
Resin, pine. Smidge of malt. Stonefruit. Pith. Mike n ikes.

Taste follows. Mouthfeel is full and rounded and there’s a characteristic counterweight yeast character. It brings pineapple, peach, and a cream feel to it. Eyes closed I might think this is a counterweight NEIPA.

Finish is boozy and pronounced. Not dry, not sweet. Balanced and clean.

Greetings y'all. I'm back and still on Dad duty, making sure the baby doesn't stick too many (or the wrong) power cords in her mouth (she's cut her first two teeth, and hoo boy them things are sharp as all get out), or startle the dog too bad or try to pull herself to standing using the stove or something. This is going to sound stupid to those of you who've been through it before, but I had imagined I'd be joining in this little weekend tradition more frequently since I'm no longer working weekends for pay, and instead just trying to keep track of the monster and stay on top of the house. Oh, the naiveté.
Most of today has been straight sun scorching down on the back porch, so I figured The Sun Myth would be an appropriate option for my entry. Well, pretty much as soon as I popped the can, the sun finally found the scattered clouds and hid away for a bit. The appropriateness grows. I retreated indoors to sip and write, since the sun was hiding, and as I type this out and finish up the glass, sure enough the clouds finally get out of the way and the cosmic rays return. I swear someone up there has a sense of humour.

Bizarre Brewing - The Sun Myth

The pour is appealing, with a light golden yellow liquid that's not really crisp, but still mostly clear. Turbid is the word I was looking for while writing my review to describe it, but even that is just poetic license as much as anything. Ultimately, I could still read the label through the liquid, so that's pretty cool, I suppose. Piled atop this second phase of matter is a luxurious clean white head that is languid in its approach to dissipation, leaving a few stray clumps along the glass, reminiscent of the scattered clouds that finally found the sun.

The nose is really really lovely. Clean and refreshing. Grassy hops with a slightly floral edge start things off, but are soon met in chorus with malts that offer light clover honey and cracker. As I dig and it warms, there's some slight earthiness as well, but those first impressions really define this beer and it is better for it.

The flavour, as one would expect, pays homage to this delightful bouquet, but unfortunately it is not able to maintain the promise aromatically alluded to. The light sweet honey malts feint like they're going to start things off, but really the grassy hops are the first actual presence, with a slightly herbal encapsulation. Now the malts take their proper turn, and it's more the light crackery side thereof that shows up. Ultimately, they join back together with a dull earthiness with an almost lemon-nod. These are all fine and of themselves, but the finish is oily and sharply bitter that gets a bit cloying and really slows down the drinkability/refreshing-ness of the brew overall, and personally I kind of wish it didn't.
The body is otherwise very creamy/smoothe with a light blanket of carbonation.

Overall this is an enjoyable brew that I'm glad to have grabbed, but I can't help but feel like it could have soared into the realm of phenomenal without the cloying/sharp nature of the finish.

    Cheers!!

Brewers Notes: Pouring dark black with creamy, glass-coating viscosity, Affogato leads with assertive notes of freshly baked brownies, vanilla icing, sticky toffee chocolate, and light roast coffee. Upon the first sip, vanilla bean engulfs the palate with complimentary flavors of espresso, caramelized brown sugar, molasses, and milk chocolate. Full bodied and creamy, yet soft and slightly warming, Doppio Affogato's gentle sweetness is kept in check by the roasty-coffee bitterness.

    Purchased at trillium canton

500ml Chilled bottle poured into an Ozark snifter, pencil thick dense brown foam resides over thick, black motor oil

Aroma is sweet , coffee, brown sugar , chocolate fudge

Taste is finely roasted espresso coffee, chewy fudge brownies, vanilla marshmallow , the coffee notes linger

Mouthfeel is Smooth, medium to low sudsing, syrupy, mouth coating, gentle sweetness

    Good evening NBW
My wife and I made a quick trip to Cincinnati today and I loaded up on Ohio & International beers at Jungle Jim's. That reminded me I had this in the fridge.
    Rhinegeist Barrel Aged Cafe Ink
500mL bottle vintage 2021 poured into a snifter at just above fridge temp 12.5% ABV. The beer pours impenetrable black with fizzy medium brown colored head. There are a few microscopic bubbles around the edge, but no discernable, lasting head or lacing. The aroma is powerful with bourbon and coffee. The taste is bittersweet roasted malt with coffee and bourbon intertwined with background flavors of oak, caramel and dark chocolate. Moderate bitterness and moderate ethanol flavor, yet not unpleasant. Mouthfeel is medium plus to full bodied with less than medium carbonation and a mostly dry finish. The drying oak and booze perfectly balance the sweetness. Overall, outstanding.

    Cheers all!

We’re just back from Phoenix visiting our son (literally 20 minutes ago) and I’ve still got lots of beer to work through from NBS BIF #17 that @Roguer sent and essentially wiped out our neighborhood.

This first one is from the Tree House haul he used to massacre my porch - and “haul” is such a light word for the carnage he wreaked, but it’s what I’ve got.

Pours a very hazy pineapple color with that ubiquitous TH creamy head that grips the glass. The nose is a little citrus and a LOT of pineapple (as expected).

The taste reveals the citrus to be a nice mango flavor, as well as some grapefruit, but this is all about the pineapple, and it’s absolutely delicious, with a nice creamy oat note at the back of the palate. Very well done to avoid “Cloyingville.”

The mouthfeel is medians soft, making for a very drinkable hazy. So well done by Tree House, something I could put on repeat.

Alus Darbnīca Labietis - BA Dravnieka Atraitne

Braggot aged in Tawny Port Wine barrels, from Latvia (14%).

Pours a cloudy, deep mahogany coloration that turns ruby red when held up to the light, with a small, frothy head. Smells of bready, grainy malt and dried fruits and nuts, with notes of raisin, plum and walnut, as well as hints of tobacco, honey and tannic oak.

Taste is a good balance of bready, grainy malt and quite a strong presence of nuts and dried fruits, with notes of walnut, pecans, raisin, plum and apricot, as well as lighter tobacco and spice, with notes of clove, allspice and vanilla, with hints of honey and musty, tannic oak as well. Finishes with a medium sweetness and some dried nuts and fruit, as well as hints of tobacco, spice and wood lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a rich body and light carbonation.

While this wasn't quite what I expected, I still found it rather enjoyable in its own way. It's definitely a bit too sweet and boozy for my personal taste, but those slightly smokey, spicy and woody notes balance that out somewhat, while you can tell immediately that this was aged in Tawny Port barrels due to the strong character of dried nuts and fruit, as well as that certain, pervading sweetness, which is enhanced from the honey as well.

There is quite a noticeable bready and grainy malt presence to this as well though, quite reminiscent of pumpernickel bread, while no hop presence is detectable, except perhaps for some herbal accents. Overall, this certainly makes for a different and interesting drinking experience, with a good complexity and strong barrel presence, I just wish it was a little less sweet.

Another weekend of new beers starts for me with continuing on the boxes from @snaotheus in NBS BIF #17. THank you for so many west coast treats!
This is Cloudburst brewing in Seattle and their "Not Interested" Brown Ale at 5.6%. I got to add this one to the BA DB as I reviewed it. Fun story about Cloud Burst, The head brewer Steve Luke used to brew in CT and I was friendly with him while here. Cool to review his beers again courtesy of this BIF adventure.

    onto my review:

Sampling a 16 oz can at cellar temp poured into my .5 L dimple mug. the date stamp appears to be 8/19/2022. tough to read as the date stamping is on the side of the top of the can metal. The beer pours a fairly dark brown color and rests almost completely dark in the glass with light passing only on the edges. This reveals a dark mahogany color to the beer.
a fluffy beige head of foam rises about 2.5 CM in my glass. This head fads to a thin edge layer soon after the pour with some wispy surface strands.
Aroma is rich chocolate, mostly dark not sweet milk chocolate, some roasted notes , a bit of a sweetened coffee note. There is some balanced earthy and herbal tea hop note, but the malt is dominant and not overly sweet nose.
First sip reveals a medium body with fine and fairly tingly carbonation. Texture is pretty smooth and the beer drinks easy.
Flavor is roasted malts, and roasted malts! I get some dark chocolate and also a bit of dark toasted bread. Not much sweet here, even though it is malt dominant profile. Maybe a bit of earthy hop note and a very dry finish. But the roast comes back and lingers. never any hint of ABV on this fine brown ale.
