    Good Morning NBWers!

Later today I will be attending the 3rd annual Logjammin’ beer festival which is a lager beer festival in Philly. I had a great time last year and the brewery list looks even ‘better’ this year.

Let’s discuss a beer that is new to us. Tell us all about the beer: how does it smell, how does it taste…?

Also, any other information you want to share.

In the good old summer time!

Today I will be discussing a new brand from Victory: Motel Paloma Grapefruit Summer Ale.

    Victory on their website details:

    “Grapefruit Summer Ale

    Motel Paloma

    Season Pass Series

    abv 6.0%

    hops Mandarina

    ibu 25

Grab your room key! Motel Paloma is open for business. This cocktail-inspired Summer Ale is equal parts juicy and refreshing. With notes of bright grapefruit, blood orange and tangy lime, it's the perfect summertime refresher to help you make a splash. Motel Paloma. For your extended stay.”

Hmm, what is this Motel Paloma they are talking about? I have no idea about the Motel part but a quick web search yields that a Paloma is a cocktail, which I have never heard about before. A recipe for a Paloma is:

4 oz. grapefruit soda (preferably Ting), chilled

    1½ oz. blanco tequila

    ½ oz. fresh lime juice

    ¼ oz. fresh grapefruit juice

    Pinch of kosher salt

Grapefruit wedge or slice (for serving)

So, I suppose the grapefruit ingredient for this beer is the Paloma ‘connection’.

Well, color me intrigued here. But what will a Grapefruit Summer Ale taste like?

    Served in my tulip glass:

    Appearance:

Golden colored with a thin white head which dissipates quite quickly.

    Aroma:

A combination of citrus (grapefruit), floral and fruity.

    Taste:

The flavor sorta follows the nose but there is more to the citrus aspect beyond grapefruit, I am also picking up some lime and orange as well. There is a low/moderate bitterness.

    Mouthfeel:

Light bodied with an off-dry finish.

    Overall:

I enjoyed drinking this beer, I think it is quite good. This beer may have motivated me to make a Paloma cocktail someday if I ever locate some Ting soda.

I really enjoy grapefruit seltzer water and would likely like soda, so I too am intrigued by this, but at 6%, not quite the all day beverage a summer day would want.
Still, sounds really good! Thanks Jack

Thanks for the kick off @JackHorzempa and I wish you an enjoyable visit into the city today. Not a fan of cocktail beers (or cocktails, prefer liquor neat), but liked your treatment.

Have a preliminary gameplan for all of the beers I received a few weeks ago, and the schedule will get me through the Summer Break most schools enjoy. This weekend, I will enjoy two selections from Dave @beergoot . Not sure when in "2023" beer this was bottled, but I don't get a chance to try new English IPAs these days, trips to Goose Island and at times The Beer Temple the only chances to scratch this itch with a Honker's Ale still brewed for draft in our area.

    Bull & Bush Man Beer

Bottle Notes: Shared in my trade with Dave @beergoot, bottle dated "2023", somewhat helpful but would have preferred a month and date as well. 16.9 oz bottle, 7.7% ABV. The Bull & Bush Brewery, Denver, Colorado. Great American Beer Festival Silver 2003. World Beer Cup Bronze 2006 Gold 2012. All Colorado Beer Festival Gold 2015,

    A Colorado Tradition Since 1971.
Colorado's IPA. The Beer You've Been Practicing For.

    Appearance:
Clear bronze base, creamy white yellow head which lingers a bit before leaving soapy lacing and a nice sustained creamy cover over the base. Mild sustained carbonation throughout, from the primary pour into my nonic glass and the top off. Looks great. 4.5

    Aroma:
Strong bready malt presence front and center as expected for this style, spot of black tea follows, with caramel and lemongrass tagging along. Enticing. 4.0

    Taste:
Mostly consistent with the aroma, though sweeter than expected with caramel, toffee and sweet bread leading the way, with dry and light bitterness pairing with tobacco and lemon to not let the horse run without their rider. Digging this, trying to slow down the drinking to complete the notes and thinking. 4.5

    Mouthfeel:
Dry and somewhat bitter, flavors sweet making for good balance. Light and easy at first, but strength starts to hit about a third of the way in, overall consistent with the listed ABV. Dry caramel finish. pleasurable. 4.5

    Overall:
Glad I pulled this out when I did, it is very enjoyable in a style you don't come across much these days unless I stop into Goose Island and order a cask Honker's Ale. Very pleasurable experience, I would be buying these quite often if this was available here. Overall very nice selection and thank you @beergoot for your thoughtful selection. 4.5

Looking forward to my first New Mexico beer rating tomorrow.

    Cheers!

It's excellent and I went in thinking it would be meh too, if you can get it I highly recommend trying it. And at Victory recently I learned that it's been a runaway hit so good to hear that it may come back or they may try some other cocktail beers (I loved Founders Mas Agave series).

Following a conversation with today's host, @JackHorzempa , last week, I had my partner pick up a six pack of Sierra Nevada Summerfest - just in time for New Beer Weekend!

I had two, so why not from two different glasses?

It's been a long time since I've had Summerfest, and my review of the old recipe was just over 10 years ago. So not only is this an apparently new recipe, but as far as my experience is concerned, it may as well be new to me, regardless.

Bottom line: this was really tasty and well done. In my old review, I mentioned it was a bit lighter and sweeter than a typical pilsner, and observed that it had some almost ale-like expression of flavor. It's not quite as crisp as most lagers. While they've changed up the recipe, I think that observation holds fairly true of this version of Summerfest. Perhaps it's SN's yeast that lends that expression.

I didn't dissect this one in great detail, partly because I've reviewed the beer before (under its original incarnation), and partly because I was cooking. As an experience, though, I found it very enjoyable, a lovely seasonal option that I would happily enjoy on tap, and I'm not regretting the purchase of a six pack.

    Cheers!

Good Morning all! Kicking off the morning with some fruit juice: Maplewood Brewing Co - Goby

Pours a slightly cloudy, but by no means opaque golden color. Thin, weak white head forms on the beer but quickly disappears. Aroma is orange, pineapple and some subtle notes of guava with some hints of wheat coming through.

Taste follows the nose with notes of fresh orange and pineapple - with the guava taking on a much more prominent role in the flavor profile. Underlying the fruit notes is a moderately sour beer with a wheated malt base. The presentation is of a more traditional berliner weisse with fruits added in. It does not have the thick smoothie like fruit in it or the pastry additives and as a result its much lighter and easy drinking than most fruited sours. Feel is, as I mentioned lighter and more easy drinking - perfect for a hot day. Reminds me a lot of the Revolution "Freedom of" series. Bright carbonation. Semi-dry finish.

Overall it's a great fruited sour - tasty, refreshing and easy drinking. Picked a single can of this up on a whim, but I'll be grabbing more of it.

    look: 3.75 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25 = 4.38 (rDev 0% - added beer to database and posted first review).

While I have a stout warming up a touch I'm enjoying this

    Sly Fox - Bohemian Gold

    Best by 9.23.23

Poured at fridge temp into a willi glass

Pours a bright gold with a fair 2 finger eggshell colored head. Sparse clumps of lacing. 4

Rich saaz on the nose is perfectly spicy and earthy. 3.75

Sweet malts, spicy saaz hop, and a touch of bitterness as well. 4

Very easy drinking with just enough carbo bite. 3.75

I could drink this all day, and the 3.9% makes that easily doable, would make an excellent lawn mowing beer. 3.75

An IPA from Deschutes, Cosmic Creatures, pretty good but a little forgettable.
Appearance: Mostly clear yellow, ok head.

Smell: Starts with some dank, then citrus rind.

Taste: A little sweetness to start, then a nice citrus bitterness, grapefruit and citrus rind. Prickly carbonation and moderate bitterness.

Overall: A nice IPA, good balance between sweetness and bitterness. Good citrus flavor and feel, another quality beer from Deschutes.

    Next up,

    Templin Family - Delmar

    Canned 4.8.23

Poured at about 40°(really need a food thermometer soon to keep this up!) Into a tulip glass

Pours tar black with a aggressive mocha colored head. Leaves a irregular and sparse tie-dye esque lace. 4

Big chocolate but not sweet, molasses and roasty aroma. 4

Taste follows, with the additions of mild char, and touch of bitter hop. 4.25

Body is ultra smooth and fairly moderate for a 11.5% bruiser, boozy warmth is a touch noticable, but it's not clear and present. Carbo is very mild, almost non-existent; could be it burned out in the head. 4.5

Overall a very nice American imperial, but not an everyday or even weekly drinker. 4

    My beer advocate beer #2300

Brewers Notes: A demonic Russian-Style Imperial Stout brewed with coffee, Mexican vanilla, and Indian sugar, this beer defies description. Available one day a year, in April at the brewery: Dark Lord Day.

Vintage guide: Black wax wrapped label = 2020

Bottle received in bif17 courtesy of @ovaltine

Room temperature bottle poured into a pretentious beer glass. Dark cola brown liquid, little foam , settles to a ring

Aroma is coffee, molasses, brown sugar, tobacco

Taste is coffee, dark fruits, raisins, tobacco, char , port wine

Sudsy mouthfeel, lighter body than I expected ,not syrupy, boozy

Good beer, reminds me more of a barley wine than a RIS, thanks @ovaltine

I saw this brew at a local retailer yesterday and did not pay it any attention. Based on your positive review I’m going to buy one and bring it to a BBQ tomorrow. It should be new to all the beer drinkers there. Should be fun.

Thanks @JackHorzempa for getting NBW off to a good start. I always learn something new from you.
My wife says her broken ankle is feeling better. I know it must be, because she wants to go hang out at the pool. Plus, she wants to drink some margaritas. These are very good signs.
I probably will be sticking with beer.
I picked this up today. Juneau Juice, a hazy IPA from Alaskan Brewing Company. In a stovepipe it is 6.8% ABV and a best by date of 081923.
The beer is a hazy amber color with a thick off-white head and a modest amount of lacing.
    Fruity aroma.
Taste of orange, with some late pine.
    Nicely bitter.
Not exactly what I would consider a hazy IPA, but still very good.

Jet black, opaque body; thick, light brown head; creamy. Dark roasted grain aroma infused with chocolate and cocoa; dull, earthy spiciness; a suggestion of chili peppers. Huge bitter chocolate flavor infused with a nice chili pepper flavor; mild whiskey note; general spiciness. Heavy body; dense and velvety on the palate; residual sugar stickiness; chewy.

A dense and complex beer is what we have here. Rich and heavy hitting on the one hand, on the other, a very flavorful and and potent imperial stout. The habanero peppers and a fine counterpoint to the rich malts. Apparently vanilla and cinnamon are are involved with this beer. Reading after the fact, I can see those elements in the beer, too. Very enjoyable.

Fresh Catch by Narragansett Brewing Co.

This beer comes from the Summer Variety Pack. From the bottom of the can: "B03 13 06:14"

There is a slightly spicy hop aroma with light hints of lemon zest. It has a bit of a floral scent with some nondescript plant clipping notes. The overall aroma is light but distinguishable notes of specific hop characters come through rather than feeling muddled together which is nice. As the beer sits for a while an orange marmalade aroma comes through.

A very pleasant herbal hop note comes through up front, then it crosses over the middle of the palate with earthy notes of moss, seaweed, and cedar wood. A bit of lemon flavor in the aftertaste.

It feels light bodied but towards the upper range of light. There is a very pleasant hop bitterness that is just present enough to let you know it's there without being overwhelming. It is a refreshing beer to drink and quite enjoyable.

The can states that this is "A Refreshing Golden Ale Dry Hopped with Citra!" The aroma in the beer is nice but the presence is pretty light, especially for a dry hopped beer. The flavor of the beer makes up for the aroma with a pleasant earthy and herbal character mixed with a light citrus note. This is an easy drinking and refreshing beer that would be nice to drink on a camping trip or when working in the yard. I would buy it again and I recommend it.
