Browar Pinta - Hazy Discovery: Dijon

New England IPA brewed with Mosaic, Strata and El Dorado hops, from Poland (6.5%).

Pours a hazy, orange coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of biscuity malt and citrus, tropical hops, with notes of grapefruit and passion fruit, as well as hints of dankness.

Taste is a good balance of biscuity malt and fruity, juicy, slightly grassy and dank hops, with citrus and tropical notes of grapefruit, passion fruit and papaya, with just a hint of grassy weed coming through as well. Finishes with a light bitterness and some grapefruit, passion fruit and hints of dank weed lingering in the aftertaste. Soft mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

This makes for an okay NEIPA that feels somewhat juicy, but just lacks that really vibrant and well-defined quality that expect from the hops for this style. While there are some citrus, tropical and dank notes to this, they all feel a bit washed out and not that expressive, with an overlying grassy feel that almost feels chalky as well. This may be due to age, but if the brewery has really set a 12-month BB-date for this, making it 4 1/2 months old, they deserve the bad rating as far as I'm concerned.

Nearly clear, golden yellow body with a slight haze appearance; fair carbonation; thick, white head, sudsy with a semi-creamy character. Very inviting aroma; pine resin and floral tones; citrus suggestion. The taste comes across balanced and fairly complex; grassy and bitter; delicate malt underpinning; earthy herbal tones. Medium body; crisp; semi-dry feel overall.

A rock-solid India pale ale that fits in nicely with the west coast India pale ale genre.

I had one of the Goldfinger beers. Unfortunately I did not write down the brand name but I do remember I enjoyed drinking that beer.

    Cheers!

I spoke to the Tonewood co-owner/brewer and we discussed Lumberyard Lager. He mentioned they used aged hops to brew that beer which was a bit surprising to me. He was the second brewer that I talked to at the lager beer festival that mentioned that. He stated that at Tonewood they would open the bags of hops and let them be exposed to air (oxygen) for a period of time before using them.

A topic I need to explore further.

    Cheers!

We went from shorts and tee shirts on Friday to wrapped up in sweatshirts today. Forty degrees cooler, roughly, and dank, damp cold. Planted a few zinnias and that was enough for outdoor stuff. Brief respite from musical activities, so it's strange having no particular commitments.

    Tonight's beer is:

Rising Tide Classic Wicked Whoopie. The whoopie pie is a big thing in Maine, so a collaboration between a brewery and a whoopie pie company seems inevitable. Let's see if it delivers.

Pours deep cola color, very respectable tan head, lingers a bit, crashes to a thin layer, decent cling.

The smell is mostly of the base stout and caramel sweetness. Even well-warmed it stays that way. I don't find any chocolate or vanilla/marshmallow to speak of.

Taste follows - it tastes more like a stout with caramel syrup than anything else. The stout flavor is ok, with a good roast flavor and just a little acrid char. Then caramel pretty much takes over. Maybe the very mildest hint of vanilla at the end. But it's not hitting the mark implied by namesake. Fairly sweet. It's kind of rough around the edges and what flavor there is seems a bit jagged.

The mouthfeel is on the thick side, and it's a tad bit cloying, sticky sweetness. Borderline on the char and bitterness.

This one just doesn't come together and it certainly fails to deliver on the iconic Maine pastry treat. For me, the ceiling is 3.5 on this one.

I enjoyed drinking this beer on draft at the Sly Fox Brewpub (Phoenixville) a couple of days ago at a get-together with a fellow BA. I enjoyed that beer.

I too have a can I was gifted from my buddy Phil that I will discuss in a NBW thread post.

    Cheers!

Well, Eli related it provides a differing flavor profile which does not tell you (or me) much. But maybe I will find a paper which provides some further details? I told Eli that I store my hops in the freezer (very cold storage helps preserve hops) and I don't expose them to air/oxygen any longer than I have to (conventional wisdom).

If I do indeed learn some 'science' here I will share.

    Cheers!

That would be my suggestion. I did enjoy this one 'beer' but it was more like a beer cocktail. I did enjoy that one bottle but I am uncertain I would want to drink a second one after the first.

    Cheers!

Counter Weight - Crucial Mass, more NBS BIF #17 porch-to-porch ballistics from @sulldaddy

16oz can served in a big snifter. Can is dated 02/06/23.

Pours completely murky with a thick, one-and-a-half finger creamy head, which settles slowly and leaves a super thick ring and clumpy layer across the surface. Color is a whitish yellow. Smell is tropical juice and pithy. A little old hay.

Taste is tons of pith with a lot of fruit skin bitterness. Some boozy burn, some vegetation bitterness.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, a little bit of the grittiness I often get from this style. Overall, pretty good beer.

Roughtail Brewing Lil' Orange IPA, 3.9% ABV; 3.81 over for this 95 Calorie beer

Pours a hazed gold with a thumb+ of cream colored head. Go0d head retention & lacing

    S: Some citrus notes

T: Sweet & tart oranges, a little lime, plus dryness up front. More of the same as this beer warms up, lime starts to dominate in the citrus department. Finishes a little dry with plenty of citrus

MF: Light body, slightly carbonated, good balance

Probably one of the better session IPAs I've had. These would work for me during the dog days if I was out on the Lake

Given that you obviously have more access to TG than I, I'm curious as to your take regarding their style evolution. I'm not alone in observing that they seem to have taken Sue (and King Sue), along with a plethora of other IPAs, into New England style territory - but I don't think that's how they started. I remember them being clearer, more bitter, and less herbal back in the day, and at some point, they became NE-style.

I also find TG IPAs to be consistently super herbal and dank. I don't know if there's something they're doing there with their house yeast or something, but it's overt for my palate, as compared to other IPA brewers.

    Crazy Brewski (Lithuania)

500mL bottle marked L.33170 poured into a nonic pint glass at fridge temp 15% ABV. The beer pours a little more than hefe-hazy in a dull amber. The head isn't much but the pencil thin ring and island did hang in for a minute. Minimal lacing. The aroma is mild, vaguely sweet with some orchard fruit and hints of rotten grain. The taste is sticky sweet with some caramel and more apple/pear and tongue numbing ethanol. Negligible bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium plus bodied with just less that average carbonation and a decidedly undry finish. Overall, a middling high ABV malt liquor, a Lithuanian tick, and nothing that could ever resemble an imperial pils...

Well this one should do me in for the night. Cheers all!

    Weird mood Sat night.
Had a few functions at work so a long 10 hr day.
Anyhow good to be here and checking out the thread.
    New DIPA from Tilted Barn
    Maho Bay
Pouring very hazy orange/gold, big creamy white head that lasts with very nice lacing.
Pineapple, passionfruit, mango, sweet citrus, ripe peach and flowers on the nose.
All of the above and maybe a touch of coconut? Nice grapefruit rind bitterness in the finish. Feel is nice and gentle with a tiny jab right at the finish. Opens up even more as it warms. Oats and pilsner malts it seems. Dries nicely in the end. So easy to drink this 8.2%. Is it unique in the hazy cat? No but it follows their consistency with their recipes. Good yeast profile.
All that said it's still top tier in the IPA field. I guess many of TBs are anyway.
And BTW it's probably one of the closest breweries to where I reside.
Anyhow I got my ramble in.
    Buy TB.
    Cheers![IMG]

    Peanut butter obsidian stout.
Solid black appearance with almost no head
Light carbonation with an above body.
Aroma is a strong hit of whiskey, wood, malt, roasted malt with peanuts being way in the background.
Taste has a very mild sweetness overpowered by dry dark chocolate. Whiskey, wood, with malt. Peanuts show up in the background as slightly oily.
Overall its definitely packed with flavor with the alcohol being well hidden[IMG]
