Old Rip Van Winkle Vastness of Space from Cellarmaker. Imperial stout aged for 20 months in Old rip Van Winkle bourbon barrels. Comes in at 13.5% ABV

Poured at fridge temp. Pours motor oil black with little head. The nose is phenomenal. Huge notes of chocolate, marshmallow, bourbon, vanilla, molasses, and big dark fruit.

The taste is immense, powerful, boozy, and wonderful. It's loaded with barrel character, but is balanced by oak, vanilla, molasses, brown sugar, slight astringent, raisins, and slight maple syrup. So much going on!

The mouthfeel is thick and creamy. It's a bit hot, and there is definitely a slight burn on the way down. I don't think the ABV is hidden. Interesting and really nice experience overall.

Lets go! Im starting with something different for me tonight. A light lager. Look out @micada its yellow beer! Ive got to keep emptying containers in the cellar.

This is New Trail brewing out of Williamsport , PA and their State Light Lager at 4.2% ABV. Not a Penn State Fan, but my brother is alumni.

    onto my review:
Sampling a cellar temp 16 oz can poured into my .5L dimple mug. No date stamp on can or label. Beer was gifted to me by my brother, who lives in Pennsylvania and is a Penn State Alum. I say Go Blue!
    Back to the beer.
It pours a clear champagne gold and rests slightly darker gold in the glass. A bleached white short lived fizzy head goes about 1.5 cm and is faded to nothing soon after the pour.
Aroma is sweet and grainy with a little bit of grassy hop balance. But nose is definitely sweeter side and not overly complex, or robust.
First sip reveals a light body with smooth sort of thin texture. Carbonation is very fine and tingly. Beer drinks super easy, which suits the style.
Flavor is grainy malt and some general sweetness, I get hints of grassy hops and then the beer is gone as it drinks fast. Not super robust flavor profile and not a lot of depth, but think that is the style.
Id do other craft lagers over this one if given the choice.

Thus concludes the Rhode Island Portion of the Beer Weekend. Mahalo to @tasterschoice62 for all the awesome beers!

Proclamation Ale Company Sitka West Coast Style IPA, 7.0% ABV; 4.42 overall

Pours an effervescent amber with one finger of cream colored head. Average-ish head retention & better lacing

S: Plenty of pine, cakeyness, starts to skew more malty as this warms, a touch of citrus as well

T: Follows the nose, plenty dry, some grapefruit & tangerine, & a little toffee up front. More dryness & pine , plus cakeyness as this beer warms up, a little grapefruit. Finishes dry, piney, a little cakey

MF: Medium body, somewhat firm carbonation, skews hoppy, duh

Classic West Coast IPA here, plenty drinkable. A full-on hop assault

oof. Truth be told, I had a couple amber-y beers recently…for science…I was forced…I was confused by my advanced age… I draw the line at those super sunny yellow ones. You can’t trust them. Nothing or nobody is that GD happy looking.

To counter the cosmic energy distortion of the heathen yellow devil water, I offer this 2023 WeldWerks Medianoche. More dark beer and barrel mixes than Satan can douse with his hell piss.

No head. Black as an ace of spades. Oil level viscosity. Loads of wet wood character, something I sense more of in these 24+ month aged beers. First sip is a bit underwhelming, in that it’s arguably TOO complicated. Fortunately, typing this buys me time for the beer to warm more. Time starts to do wonders on the profile, with more complexity from the blends instead of the singularity from the cooler temperature. $37/500 ml. Another store charging $43, which is even more egregious.

Balance has been restored to the world.

This is the most recent 1 Pint .9 FL. OZ. bottle release from the Fayston Series.

Moderate pour yields a one inch tan head over a pitch black body with lacing.

Nose of coffee, maple, caramel, vanilla, fudge, and whiskey.
    Wow!

Taste is as good as the nose with loads of coffee and maple, with caramel and chocolate in a supporting role. Whiskey flavors become more apparent upon warming. Finish is mostly maple and whiskey barrel.

Very nice, near velvet, mouthfeel with medium carbonation.

Overall, being a coffee lover, this is a superb offering from Sean L. and probably my favorite in the Fayston series. Please do yourself a favor and make the trek to wherever this is available and purchase a few!!

    Cheers!!!

2021 Goose Island, Bourbon County Brand Cherry Wood Stout
I decide to drink this one since a BCBS is the beer to drink around here this week.
Paid $14 for a bottle a few nights ago at a grocery store in WI.

Looks good, 1 inch head with a aggressive pour. The head hung for a while leaving a some lacing as I drank it.
Taste is a little of several things, balanced. Chocolate, dark fruit, oak, wood, hints of cherry and vanilla. It does have a different type of wood flavor. Mild barrel flavor. Just slightly sweet overall. Very smooth, mellow and silky. Easy drinking. Not boozy until it got rather warm.
Nice mouth feel, I didn't find it to be thin all.
I would but this in the 4.2 to 4.35/5 range. It's biggest positive is drinkablity.

Note I usually do not rate/review bigger barrel aged stouts. It's not my favorite style of beer. I prefer a big non-barrel aged stout or a barleywine instead.

I suggest giving it time to aerate and warm a bit. It’s a hefty one.

Notgoing turn my nose up on any beer @Roguer rates a 4.41. But that was bloody pricey. So I certainly get that. Going to do Black Friday thing was fun this year, but not sure I would burn the $ or time off to do again

Second beer of the night is Saugatuck Brewing out of Douglas, Michigan and their Black Is Beautiful Stout. No date stamping on this 6% stout. Beer is courtesy of @landrewg and BIF NFL33, thank you!

Sampling this 16 oz can poured into my .5L dimple mug at cellar temperature. I was trying as many of these "collab" beers as possible a while back, so excited to get another entrant here.
Holy FOAM on the pour Batman! the beer pours a dark chocolate brown entering my mug and even with a gentle pour , I get a large tan fluffy head that is easy 6 cm and would overtop my glass if I tried to pour the entire can. the foam recedes slowly and leaves some dense lattice as it slides down my glass.
Aroma is roasted malts, dark chocolate, and Im getting hints of cinnamon , even though I dont believe there is any in this beer. I dont get any hop characters and ABV is hidden.
First sip is medium body and smooth texture with fairly sharp carbonation. Maybe that explains the foaminess on the pour.
Flavor is similar to the nose, with a good bit of roasted notes, almost charred wood actually. Dark chocolate comes in and there is a little anice/black licorice hit too. Some of the chocolate is chalkier like cocoa powder, but never any hop note and ABV hidden here too.
This is a fine, sort of olde school stout, no adjunct straightforward roast and chocolate. I enjoy it, even if I ding the appearance rating a bit due to the foaminess.

Pete's Perfect Palo Santo Black Lager from Hoppin' Frog. A lager aged on Palo Santo wood. Comes in at 11.9% ABV! Enjoyed in a Fox Farm glass sent by @sulldaddy in the recent barleywine/stout BIF.

Poured from a can at fridge temp. Pours black with minimal head. The nose is roasted malts, black licorice, earth, prunes, and molasses.

The taste is really interesting and super intense relative to the nose. A good mix of sweet and bitter. Black licorice, sweet toffee, roasted malts, leather, huge notes of dark fruit, bread, vanilla, slight coffee.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and the aftertaste is predominantly sweet toffee.

    On Sunday’s we drink barleywine…
    Or so I’m told.
@FBarber sent me Off Color before we had it distributed here and I enjoyed it so much that I always look for what they are doing. So a barleywine? Duh.
Poured the color of raw honey with a nice manilla colored head that took its time to dissipate.
The flavor started with bread, not plain white bread, but gingerbread and a few spices danced into the party, hints of orange peel and clove and, curiously, black pepper. It all came together nicely and was way too easy to drink.
The feel is thinner than I expected, but then English Barleywines are not something I am well versed in so it may be the norm.
According to the can, they are now 10 years old and this was their first barleywine.
I think they have a good idea on how to brew tasty beer.
Cheers all, one and done for me today.

    Greetings, fellow NBWers,
Got up to the mid-30s today in Spokanistan. The three or so inches of snow that fell last night was partly washed away by today's rain. It's a soupy, slushy mess outside.
Today, while torturing myself with the Seahawks game, I hit this wild ale that was a collaboration between Culmination and Ale Apothecary that was bottled in 2017.
The three kinds of tree boughs and honey used as adjuncts were long gone, but the barrel aging was still very much present. Vinous and tart stuff.
