    Hello New Beer Weekend!!!

I am here a lot later than I planned on being. You've got to love no call/no shows at work. My plan was a whole day of reviews and grilling in the garage. Hopefully the weather will be good next Sunday so I can do it.

Now to my beer, and it's a big one that I picked up a couple of weeks ago in Sleepy Eye, MN.
Wood Haven Belgian Quad - Sleepy Eye Brewing - Sleepy Eye, MN - Quad - 10.1% ABV

This beer does taste good, and I love the flavor. That being said, the flavor is somewhat weak in nature. I was hoping/expecting the flavor would hit me in the face with all its Quad goodness. I like it, and I'm glad I got it, but it is lacking, sadly.

From a 750ml bottle Bottled on 2-14-2024 - 2023 edition. Served at room temp.

A bit of a hiss and smoke upon opening. This beer pours a deep, dark amber color. Fairly clear when I hold it to the light, but very dark. There's a good stream of carbonation bubbles rising in the glass. The head that forms is a 1 finger tan color. The head looks a bit fluffy and is long lasting. There's a bit of lacing on the glass.
The nose is a nice mix of dark plum, raisin, and a hint of the barrel. The nose is not too strong smelling to be honest. I wonder if some was lost in the barrel ageing process?
Taste - The flavor is a lot like the nose: it is very mellow. I do get a bit of raisin, and plum. There's a bit of a hit of the barrel that adds some caramel, toffee and vanilla to the mix. There's a faint hint of a wild funk from the yeast.
This does not drink like a 10% beer. There's no burn I am getting. It is very smooth and a bit bubbly feeling.
A very interesting concept, and it does taste good, but it also is lacking in the POW that the Quad flavor should bring.

This may be it for the weekend, who knows.

    Jacks abby pre pro
    ..very clear light amber appearance
...medium carbonation with a just below average body
..aroma is yeasty crusty white bread, cereal, grain, and some malt. Theres a dry almost medicinal scent that I cant adequately describe but some of it is dry wood.
..taste has a mild fruit element other than that it doesn't stray too far from the aroma. The medicinal aspect is lighter in the taste but does come off metallic.
..overall I liked the homemade arugula better but its still pretty good. Nagging feeling is it needs to warm up[IMG]

I never understood the Mortalis hype. Every single beer I've had from them is sickly sweet - and this is coming from a guy with a big sweet tooth.

I actually drank this one last night, but didnt get to posting it, mostly since it was late and I ended up finishing the bottle and heading to bed with out the post. But did want to share, this beer is Eleven Below from 4 Quarters Brewing in Winooski, Vermont. AN 11% barleywine with maple syrup.

    onto my review:
Sampling a cellar temp 22 oz bottle poured into my snifter. The bottle was picked up at the brewery during the eclipse weekend. Been in my cellar for the past 4 weeks.
the beer pours a clear copper color but rests in my glass a much richer ruby hue. A creamy beige head rests on the surface with about .5 cm depth. This foam fades to a thin edge layer and not much else soon after the pour.
Aroma on this brew is some sweet toffee and hints of brown sugar with a little maple syrup. No hop character and not really boozy on the nose either.
First sip reveals a medium body with slightly sticky texture. very gentle and spacious carbonation. Beer feels like a barleywine.
Flavor is toffee and maple syrup with brown sugar, but weirdly not overly sweet. I dont get any hop note and the booze is present in only the faintest black pepper bite on the swallow. No warmth or fusol notes.
This barleywine pretty much hits the notes I would expect for a beer with high ABV and maple syrup added. Id buy it again, and am enjoying it, but it also isnt worth chasing, if that makes sense.

Next up is one that I received in a trade with @Resistance88 and I have wanted to try since I first saw it posted.

Might be a surprise to those of you who can find it at your local store, but we get pretty slim pickings from Stone in West Michigan.
Poured stout black and was capped with a light brown head that did its level best to make me start drinking from the can. Which I did.
Has the roasty harshness, but just a little. The bourbon is just as mild. The stout itself takes center stage and it’s just a good stout. Coffee and cacao in spades, a little dark fruit and the aforementioned barrel and roast.
The feel is good, just viscous enough.
    Good beer.

Well, since this weekend has been crazy for me, I might as well go crazy after a 750 of a Quad.

Eighteen - Surly Brewing - Minneapolis, MN - Belgian Golden Strong - 11%

I remember right before my vacation this popped up into the system at work. I have been down on Surly for a while now, because a lot of what they've been producing has been sub-par in my book. I did read what this beer was, and my jaw dropped! Belgian Golden Strong made with Brett, and different ageing of parts of the beer! Holy cow, this sounds good. We got it and I made sure one was reserved for me, because I was off on vacation when it was delivered.

I know Brett yeast is so divisive in the beer world. Some can't handle the funk of it. I am a fan, and would love to see more.

There is Brett in this beer, but, I also think it is very restrained. There's a good green apple bill to this beer. It does have a bit of wild and funk, but, it is also very drinkable. I like this beer. I am happy with it, and will be getting more of it. I will ask to see what my good friend @Alefflicted thinks of it as well.

    From a 16oz can, canned on 03/18/2024

This beer is a very super clear pouring beer, and golden in color. There's a good deal of carbonation bubbles rising in the glass to produce a 1 finger white head. The head dissipated super fast, but did have smaller bubbles. There's almost no lacing on the glass.
The nose is wild and funky as heck. I get a lot of tart green apple aroma off it. There's floral elements to the aroma. Somewhat wild and yeast smelling.
Taste - The flavor actually does start off mellow. Hints of biscuit, bread and honey. The flavor then ramps up to a wild, funky, tart green apple. This flavor is somewhat wild and earthy in nature. This flavor really builds on the back.
The body is interesting to say the least. This beer does drink easy in a way, because it has no burn at all. I finished half of it off in no time flat trying to figure it out. There's a bubbly element to it. It is funky, yet smooth.
I do like this beer. Brett yeast can be divisive to the beer community. It has elements some just don't like. I am a fan, yet, I also think this isn't over the top in that department. It is good, but not over the top Brett. I will get another for sure.

This is the closer for the weekend! Cheers all!

One beer tonight. Rough soccer game for our team and Im dwelling on the game too much, so probably just need to go to bed. this is bottle logic red eye november imperial stout, courtesy of @Beersnake in the Big Stout and Barleywine BIF#1. Which was AMAZING! Thank you!
Beer is 15.30 % ABV. Lets Go!
    onto my review:

Batch #006 550 ml bottle poured at cellar temp into my trusty snifter. The beer pours a dark rich black coffee color with no light passing through the glass. A dense creamy tan head foams up about 1 cm and fades to a sturdy edge layer soon after the pour and the thinnest of surface covering. Aroma on this beer is dark fudge chocolate, some brown sugar and hits of bourbon with a good bit of sweetened coffee and a bit of molasses. No hop character and not really boozy of fusol aroma. all the nose matches up with the style.
First sip reveals a fairly thick body with sticky texture that coats my lips after each sip. Very fine and gentle carbonation easily rolls across my palate. Feels like a big imperial stout should.
Flavor is dark fudge and chocolate, some sweetened coffee, molasses, hints of bourbon also show up. A bit of sweet vanilla in there too. Not boozy or hot though, even with the higher ABV. I feel like I am getting earthy cinnamon on the finish each swallow. Again, never any hop character on this flavor profile, similar to the nose.
Beer is a big imperial stout with bourbon and coffee and drinks as such. I am slightly amazed at the hidden booze. Well worth the sampling!

Founders Mortal Bloom Hazy IPA, 6.2% ABV; 3.41 overall

Pours a slightly hazed gold with one finger of eggshell colored head. Average-ish head retention & lacing

S: Some tropical fruit & even less citrus

T: Green melon, pomelo, & dryness along with some passion fruit up front. More of the same as this beer warms up. Finishes dry with green melon, lime, pomelo & Passion fruit

MF: Medium body, subdued carbonation, okay balance

I expected way more from this, boring, okay drinkability. Glad I didn't buy a 12 pack of this

This will be the last beer it put me down. From the Wichita Haul

River City Brewing Rob's Seven Barrel Blend Imp Stout, 14.5% ABV; 3.97 overall

Pours a very thick Ebony with some evidence of carbonation & a sliver of mocha colored head. Zero head retention & lacing

S: Dark fruit, barrel rawness, dark chocolate, hints of maple

T: Follows the nose, dark chocolate, leafy hops, some dryness, hints of cola as well up front. Salted plums, dark chocolate, raw oakyness as this beer warms up. Finishes with more salted plum, some sour mash, figs, brown sugar & carob

MF: Chewy as Hell, warming, not much discernable carbonation

A sipper without a doubt, it started a little hot & got better as it warmed up. Some carbonation would've pushed the rating up

    Three Floyds - Chemtrailmix MMXXI

750ml bottle with blue wax. No date, but based on the name would guess it's 2021 vintage. Bottle number 260/3000. Sent to me by @ovaltine in NBS BIF #18.

Pours black and thick, very little head on the pour but a small ring and a lonely, tiny islet arise after a while. Smell is cinnamon and black licorice. Something reminds me of chocolate.

Taste is dominated by cinnamon, but balanced by something sweet and dense. Maybe some molasses and chocolate syrup, heavily sweetened coffee. Black licorice is in there.

Mouthfeel is thick, dense, bordering on chewy. Overall...this is a good beer, and the exceedingly rare example of a cinnamon-forward beer that I'm actually kind of digging...although I'm very, very early in the bottle and it's going to have a lot of time to warm up, so we'll see what happens...

Found this one from @zeile33 to be interesting due to a new-to-me hop: Nectaron.
    Entanglement

This is really a hoppy lager.
What really set this apart is the new to me Nectaron hops. They really do pump the nose full of nectarine and apricot before settling in with some melon and gentle tropical notes.
Flavor is more of a balance between melon, apricot, nectarine, and again the "tropical" notes.
    Mouthfeel is slight yet active.
