Trying Spring House’s version of Black Is Beautiful. So far I have tried two versions of this and I will say I could taste the difference between them but my scores were very close (4.15 and 4.16).

Pale yellow body; very lively carbonation; thin yet semi-creamy white head. Light floral and fruity aroma; melon and berries.Very light malt body; very faint hop bitterness; light bread crust; just a hint of pear. Light body; crisp; lightly sweet.

Eh, not bad, not great. It is refreshing and would easily satisfy a beer thirst on a hot summer day.
    ----
One of two Mexican lagers I picked up the other day. I generally like the style. It's light and refreshing. This particular beer meets the criteria. It's nothing to get really excited about, but certainly satisfies if you're looking for a light bodied beer without a huge ABV...

New Province Hippas Major Hazy Double IPA, 8.7% ABV. 3.97 overall

Pours an effervescent & only slightly hazed honey color with one finger of cream colored head. Average head retention & better lacing

    S: Sweet oranges, some pineapple

T: Follows the nose, a little coconut as well, plus dryness up front. More coconut & pineapple with some lime thrown in as this warms, plus more dryness. Finishes with pineapple & coconut, plus dryness

MF: Medium body, moderate carbonation, good balance

Drinks fairly easy, very tropical, a little better body & this would be a must buy

Oddly enough, that might have been my third half liter of Schlenkerla, and I think I was least on board with it.

I haven't given up on them by any stretch. I think if I had three half liters of that specific beer, it would grow on me.

This was from earlier this evening ,first time out since march
Spellbound vice coffee porter on tap, this is a local NJ brewery
...has about average carbonation with a just slightly thin body
..aroma is a really nice mix of fresh made black coffee, malt, roasted malt, licorice, dark bitter chocolate
..taste is rich black coffee, roasted malt and a charred dark bitter chocolate. There's some mocha sweetness which plays second to a strong but pleasant coffee bitterness.
..overall the only weak spot is the body which still was pretty good. If you drink it slow and let it warm up the flavors evolve and become more rich[IMG]

A very easy pour is needed to keep the head from going over two fat fingers of rich, creamy and rocky white foam. Very long retention and sticky rings and blotches of lace. Very hazy yellow straw color, can't read through it.

Mild smell of peach and grapes that have soured, a faint musty funk in the background with fresh cut grass.
Wheat as toast and a general graininess with lemon and sour apples emerges.

Moderately tart and sour, spicy bitterness comes on late. Semi-dry, soured fruits provide a hint of potential sweetness.
Just enough pale malt balances the tart/sour taste and reminds me that this is an Ale, a little yeast is noticeable.
The Brett flavor is mellow, not as funky as the smell, slight barnyard and silage. Alcohol is very well hidden.

Medium-light bodied, plentiful lasting carbonation per style. Smooth and session-able lively feel with a nice balance to a somewhat complex brew. I must note that this Beer is at least 13 months old and unfortunately retired at this time.

New Province New Reality Barrel Fermented Brown Ale, 7.7% ABV; 3.79 overall

Pours an effervescent hazel with rapidly falling tan head, near zero lacing & head retention

S: Toastyness, boozey barrel notes as this warms

T: Follows the nose, pretty darn dry, just a little coffee & just a little caramel up front. A slight sourness comes through as this warms, I presume from the barrel fermentation along with toasty dryness, coffee & a little caramel. Finishes dry, toasty with a little coffee

    MF: Medium body, moderate carbonation

An interesting beer was hoping for a little deeper flavor profile & more body

I was really just good-naturedly busting your chops a little. Everyone has their own definition of NJ geography it seems. Anyway, the more important point I guess is that Cape May has made a lot of inroads throughout NJ the last year or so and their stuff is everywhere and well thought of. The same goes for Tonewood recently.

For the price point and alternative options, I agree. The Double Daisy Cutter released in the past had a resemblance to DC, this one does not. I am glad you enjoyed it and hope you have a new beer or two this weekend!

Third beer today, Maplewood Flashes of Light.

    Tale of the tape:
$11 Four Pack ($2.75/can) purchased July 29th direct from the brewery. 16 oz canned 7/22/20 @ 11:32:11, refrigerated the entire time. 4.6% abv (website lists as 4.5%).

    "Racing"

Appearance: Crystal clear faint straw coloured pour, generous bubbly soapy head lasts several minutes before receding, rich head, lacing clears quickly. 3.25

    Aroma:
Light inviting Pilsner style aroma, malty bread cracker. 3.5

    Taste:
Mirrors aroma, very light, pleasant bread, sea salt cracker taste. Tastes good, though wish it was bolder, my tongue is begging for more. 3.0

    Mouthfeel:
Wafer thin, faint carbonation throughout the pour, slight bitterness, very easy finish and alcohol presence. 2.75

    Overall:
Overall very light pilsner, more aptly named flashes of taste. Pleasant, but I want more, impossible to ignore, impossible to ignore. This is a better Pilsner attempt than their standard year-round Pulaski Pils. 3.0

OK beers today (3.0, 3.5, 3.0 overall), hoping for a bolder tastes when I crack open a pour or two tomorrow.

    Cheers!

I have been having a bunch of internet issues on my phone and would have posted something yesterday if I wasn’t so frustrated and if I remembered it is wisely Saturday and Sunday now.

Poured into a 13 oz long stem tulip glass canned on 7/17/2020. Pours a hazy orange with a finger sticky white head that leaves a few thin streaks of lace with excellent retention. 4.5

Smell is tangerine, pineapple, papaya, ripe melon, apricot, and a little grapefruit rind. 4.5

Taste follows tangerine, pineapple, papaya, cantaloupe, apricot, and just a little grapefruit really balanced. 4.5

Mouthfeel is bigger than average, a tad sticky not dry, soft gentle carbonation, and at 8% it really goes down easy. 4.5

Overall this is another excellent NEDIPA from one of the best in NH. Highly recommend. 4.5 Cheers all.

Smell is ripe melon, mango, pineapple, mandarin orange, peach, apricot, and grapefruit rind. 4.25

Taste follows honeydew, pineapple, mandarin, peach, mango, apricot, and a healthy shot of grapefruit in the bold but balanced finish. 4.25

Mouthfeel is bigger than average, a tad sticky but not dry, rather soft carbonation, and at 8% really easy drinking. 4.25

Overall I definitely recommend this one, not a wow beer, but a really tasty NEDIPA for me. 4.25

-not quite mentally on the NBW change yet. This morning’s new beer is Fools and Kings: Succession, a coffee stout from Sand City ( canned this week).
This opaquely dark, ebony can pour hosts at 1 cm tan cap of foam.
The aroma is of toasted malt and roasted coffee beans. Sweet maple syrup and cinnamon notes are included.
The flavor is full, following the nose. A bit of charred malt and bitter chocolate add to the malt and coffee aspects.
The finish is dry. Some bitterness persists.
This is a well-balanced, flavorful brew.

    Good morning NBW
My first Kane beer courtesy of @TheGent
    [IMG]
    Night Swimming
16oz CANNED ON 06/23/20 poured into a becher glass at fridge temp 5.2% ABV per label on can. The beer pours mostly bright light straw yellow with nearly white head. The head recedes to a thin ring and single layer of bubbles. No lacing. The aroma is faint with grain and vague fruit that I can't place. The taste follows with a fruity pebbles hop vibe over a soft, pale malt body. Minimal to moderate bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, very good IPL. It's listed as a helles here, and I would say it's marginal within those style guidelines. Really enjoyable, highly hopped, cleanly lagered IPL. Thanks Anthony!

I work tonight, so no more new beers this weekend. Cheers all and enjoy your Sunday!

Not a side-by-side this morning, despite what the picture looks like (the Reve is hers).

Cloud Hopping is a 6.5% "hazy oat IPA," described by Humble Forager as "...our fluffy, double dry hopped, hazy IPA. Brewed with barley, oats and white wheat. Hopped at a rate of five pounds per barrel with Citra, Galaxy, and Citra Cryo."

(Adding to the confusion, there is also a Forager brewery in Minnesota, who also has a beer called Cloud Hopping - which also happens to be a New England IPA. I suspect there is something amiss here, but Forager has a bunch of brews to their name, as does Humble Forager. If anyone knows the full story, and perhaps these are actually the same brewery, let me know, and I'll clean up the BA database. Alternatively, if the Forager entry for Cloud Hopping was a mistake on someone's part, I can fix that, as well. There seems to be no other overlap between the beer lists. It does not help that this Cloud Hopping has no reviews or ratings, and the other (Forager) has only 2 ratings and no reviews.)

Right off the bat, this is how a beer with Citra and Galaxy should smell! If yesterday's lineup of IPAs was mostly underwhelming (although I really did like Ultra Wires), today is off to a great start - that is, if the aroma is any indication of the taste.

(My only other Humble Forager brew, from the Elevated Perspective series, was really, really damn good.)

Unfortunately, the wonderful aroma is the high point for this beer.

What kills it is the watery mouthfeel, which is honestly a shock. Yes, it's on the low end of the ABV spectrum for IPAs, but a good Hefe clocks in at less potency, yet manages a creamy and full body. In fact, plenty of beers from the Northeast manage a creamier feel at the same ABV.

The result is a really nice palette of flavors that lose all impact. There's a lot going on, but it seems to wash right away and disappear. No off flavors, and I really like the expression of the Citra and Galaxy - I just wish I could savor it.

And this is coming from a "hazy oat IPA" brewed with oats and wheat. I'm honestly a little baffled.

All of that said, knowing now what to expect, I'd gladly take this beer on tap - say, as your local B-Dubs or as a change up at your favorite craft bar. I wouldn't take it over an established mainstay like Jai Alai, but as a change of pace - and when you still want an IPA - it would be a welcome addition. It's a good beer, but it could have been a truly great beer, and they just missed the mark.

Hopefully later iterations of this creation will have a mouthfeel that's more dialed in.
