Loving all the Bell’s love this weekend! I’m having one that I got from the infamous @DoctorZombies last weekend, a German Pilsner from West Virginia:
I’ve been focusing on Czech Pilsners for whatever reason but this one will force me to broaden my range of Pilsners.
Not much in the appearance aspect, at least when compared to other Pilsners, but the taste has everything I want in the style- leading with those biscuity malt flavors and finishes with that grassy, herbal hoppy taste.
Really good example of the style, thanks for sharing Dave!

Easy drinking 4.5% lightly funky/tart saison from SARA - cheers!

Poured from a 750mL bottle into my Troubadour tulip.

Lightly hazy tangerine body with a low ivory cap. Fine, sandy lacing; good retention.

White grapes, some citrus, and gentle funk (barnyard/goat cheese) in the nose.

Tart palate entry with a punch of buttermilk. Mild herbal bitterness and some complex grain notes are overwhelmed by a mineral-laden oak-kissed, almost vinous finish. Hints of lime, kiwi, starfruit, and plum pits.

Fairly light bodied, spritzy and reasonably refreshing. Lightly puckering/tannic.

A bright summery saison bordering on a wild ale - tasty.

Harviestoun is one of my favorite breweries, and this is a great offering. Though it has a long history of changing styles on this site, without the beer changing at all...I seem to remember it was an Old Ale at one point (because the barrel aged Ola Dubh versions are listed here as an Old Ale), it uses some oats, so it has also been changed to an Oatmeal Stout. Also an English Porter, and now English Stout ha. I'll agree with the label...its just a "Black Ale"

Regardless, it is great, and all the Ola Dubh's are great as well.

And I just looked up Ola Dubh, they are listed here as an English Stout now as well...finally some constancy I guess ha, they were Old Ales on this site for the longest time. Not that any of that matters...

FOCOCOMO from Bottle Logic. Imperial stout aged in bourbon with Madagascar vanilla beans, finished with coconut and Mostra coffee. Comes in at 14% ABV.

Poured from a bottle at fridge temp. Pours super thick black with very dark brown head. Looks lovely.

The nose is dominated by vanilla, as expected. The coconut is there, along with rich chocolate, super smooth coffee, slight toffee, dark malts, walnuts, and molasses. Stunning on the nose. I might dock a point for the lack of bourbon here.

The taste is really nice, but perhaps one step down from the nose. The coffee is really nice on this one. The vanilla offsets the bitterness from the coffee. I don't get much coconut on this one. Roasted malts, bourbon, dark fruit (more present than expected), and almost a hint of red wine. Interesting. I will say that the nose was a bit better than the taste, although the taste is great.

Mouthfeel is thick and viscous. The aftertaste is more bourbon and dark fruit, with a hint of vanilla.

@GreenBayBA started this thread with a beer I gave him, I am here now with a beer he gave me. One I’ve been wanting to try ever since he first posted about it.
This is an amazing BA Stout, as much dark fruit as dark chocolate and coffee to keep it from getting sweet. A tiny bit of bourbon adds to the mix and it’s all very well balanced. Absolutely smooth and waaay too easy to drink.
Light viscosity keeps me from slamming it, the ABV is almost unnoticeable. Just kept thinking there should be something bitter and there isn’t. Very good. Thanks @GreenBayBA!

A busy and filled day today; absolutely beautiful summer weather this weekend, these evenings are making me feel like fall is close but we still got some time. Just watched the local kid pitch a complete game shut out for the Phillies too!! Now we open a beer I’m quite excited about, typing while listening to the katydids sing their song, crickets doing back up

Amber lagers and ales got me into craft so it is welcoming to see this as a flagship for this NJ brewery. I will be buying a four pack to support them and this beer, this single sealed the deal for me. Thanks to @HoppingMadMonk for bringing this one to my attention.

Czig Meister - Prospector (Amber Ale 5.2%)

Pours mostly clear; dark amber appears almost dark brown but backlit it has that beautiful reddish hue; head is lightly brown in color with good retention.

Nose is malt; caramel like, some toastiness, grain husk, a mix of earthy hops with a touch dark fruit.

Taste has is a good one two punch of malt and hops; little bit of caramel, some toast; leafy hops, light pine; picking up a really subtle dark fruit note on the finish.

Body is medium-light; very smooth and creamy; some hop stickiness; moderate bitterness, does a very good drying out, finishing very clean.

This is just a lovely, well balanced malty and hoppy beer. I will enjoy every sip and purchase a four pack this week sometime I hope.

    ———————

@ChicagoJ that is a beer I haven’t had either and makes me curious to try. I’ll add that, along with Modelo Negro to my NBW future beer inspired by you.

@Coronaeus hope you were able to get to Godspeed for that anniversary thing, or if it’s tomorrow, hope you make it and share at least a picture :beers:

I have been increasingly impressed with Bottle Logic's ability to produce good pale ales and lagers. Fluid Dynamics is a standout for me - really good and it got great compliments from some German friends of mine.

Finally back to the party. Last weekend didn't go to plan at all. We left the home fort Saturday morning earlier than ever all jacked up for an early arrival to the cabin...what should have been about a 3.5 hour trip took over six hours due to traffic. We did stop, as usual, at When Pigs Fly and I'm mildly kicking.myself in the ass for passing on Pliny the Elder on tap but by that time I was pretty beat from the incessant traffic and we had another hour to go so it didn't seem the best idea. Normally we can get to Kittery in 2-ish hours...took five hours plus. Since then, it's been a much needed week of R&R. The grandson is turning tadpole and he has about a 30 foot by 10 foot area from the shore of sandy bottom less than three feet deep. We just watch...

Enough whining, let's get to a new Maine treat:

Trust me - there's a lake outside that window!

Allagash Kernza Lager. I guess this is a beer making the rounds with different breweries and is somehow associated with Patagonia Clothing. It uses a grain called kernza - a perennial grain with deep roots that helps build and maintain soil structure. I'm in...sounds like a good idea. Brewers are playing with it.

    Here's the deets:

Grains: Weyermann Bioland Pilsner Malt (Organic), Blue Ox Organic Pale Malt, Organic Kernza, Briess Organic Munich Malt

Hops: Organic Chinook, Organic Aroostook Cascade, Organic Centennial

    Yeast: Belgian lager

    ABV: 5.4

Pours a very clear deep yellow gold with a huge soapy head that hangs admirably then absolutely refuses to let go of the glass as it falls to chunky rafts.

The smell is fairly typical lager. Mildly sweet and bready malt, not much of a hop nose. There's just a hint of citrus and resin, even more faint floral.

The flavor more or less follows. Slightly sweet malts, but with an almost rye-like tang. The hops show up here - bracingly bitter and resinous mid-taste followed by grapefruit and lemon. Just a hint of floral on the finish. Nice lingering spiciness.

Feel is light, moderately effervescent. Refreshing. Light bodied and slightly dry.

Overall, I have no idea what kernza tastes like so I can't say what if anything it brings to the party. But this is a very drinkable beer regardless. I think they maybe overdid things a tad with the Chinook, but that's like my opinion, man. I'll go in the 3.8 range.

    Two recommendations:
    • Buy a single if that is an option for you
    • More importantly: check the canning date to ensure you are getting fresh beer.

All right, back in the St. Cloud metro now. Got my friend Tim home, and I'm glad we didn't stop elsewhere. There were people parked on his street for the rally today, and it would have been a nightmare to get him home if we would have been later.

Now to my beer, and it's one I picked up in ND today.

From a 16oz can purchased at the brewery earlier in the day. No date on the can.
This is a murky hazy pouring beer. It looks juicy in appearance. There's a frothy looking 2 finger white head. The retention is decent and there's a bit of lacing on the glass.
Aroma is tropical in nature from the hops. I get some pineapple, orange, and mango. These hop aromas work great together.
Taste - The hops are pineapple forward. This flavor lingers in my throat. The pineapple lingers but orange and mango come into play here. These flavors linger in my throat.
The beer is quite soft, I guess the Red River valley area must have good water, or they really have a great system to soften it. It has a juicy feeling. Slightly sticky. Was hoping for more in that department.
This is delicious, and I am so glad I bought it. Tasty!

Getting late, and I had a lot of driving today. See you all in the morning for new great (I hope) beer.

Perhaps the best beer of 24 for me so far??? Non-Barrel Aged for sure, I reckon. Will have to go check. Thank you to @not2quick for this beauty.

Narrow Guage Brewing Co. OJ Run Hazy Imperial IPA ( with Citra, Amarillo, Galaxy & Columbus Hops ), 8.3% ABV; 4.73 overall

Pours a very hazed gold with a thumb+ of eggshell colored head. Great head retention & lacing

S: Citrus, coconut, pineapple. Some leafy hops once warm, faded a little down the stretch

T: Oranges, passionfruit, a little dryness, green melon & pomelo up front. Tons of OJ, pineapples & a little coconut, plus some lime & dryness as this beer warms up, a little grassyness as well. Finishes with plenty of citrus, some dryness, green melon, pineapple Kiwi Fruit & dryness, some vanilla of the tip of the tongue

MF: Medium body, smooth carbonation; great balance

Drinks too easy, really brings the OJ. Loved this one!

Last new beer for today. Same, Same from Fort George. A west coast IPA featuring NZ hops bract 106, mosaic, and riwaka hops. Comes in at 7% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a murky orange with an inch of white fluffy head. The nose is resin, slight funk, citrus peel, orange, and slight vanilla.

The taste is really nice. Sharp hop note - vibrant and bitter. Pine, resin, wheat, grass, marmalade, and a hint of apricot. This is a really great take on the West Coast style. Not too far off from Pliny.

Mouthfeel is light and dry. Super hoppy finish with a bitter aftertaste.
