Nice! Thanks for the tag, and I totally agree that this beer scratches that itch and then some. Plus, it's the perfect time of year to enjoy it. :sunglasses::beers:

    Have a great weekend!

I like kicking off my own New Beer Weekend with my partner, when I can. Sometimes, that means we each get a bottle or can of the same beer. Other times, it means we split something massive ...

The Bruery NWTM (No Work Till (sic)* Monday)

It shouldn't be shocking to say that a double barrel-aged imperial stout that clocks in at almost 20% ABV is big ...

It shouldn't be a surprise that adding fresh pineapple results in a sweet beer ...

... but you might be surprised at just HOW big, and HOW sweet this is, without being too much in either direction.

The nose is super impressive, but doesn't give any impression of the additives. Rather, it's all about the massive imperial stout base and tons of bourbon - and it's wonderful.

On the palate, everything plays together almost perfectly. The pineapple is much stronger than the coconut and macadamia nuts, but that should be expected, given the contrast between the sugary, fruity punch and more subdued toasty nuts. Mostly, however, everything blends together very smoothly, the additives complementary to the overall experience.

Brown sugar, bourbon, and to a lesser extent pineapple up front; growing pineapple in the middle, along with chocolate, espresso, and caramel; moving to a back third where the pineapple is still present but now fading, leaving behind a touch of hot effervescence, notes of dry cocoa powder, vanilla, and macadamia nuts.

A beer this boozy and sweet shouldn't be this approachable. It's not quite as thick as some other massive imperial stouts (including others from the Bruery), but it's damn dangerously drinkable.

This one may not be for everyone, but it's pretty incredible to me. Fantastic and lovely; it's going to take a while to finish, and I plan on enjoying every sip.

*Ladies, gents: it's 'til, not till. 'til is a contraction for until. Till is a freaking verb (and a noun), and it means something different. It's no work until Monday.**

**OK, I myself just learned that "till" actually predates "until" in the same usage, and isn't actually a contraction. I doubt that most modern English users recognize that, and think they are indeed shortening until (and doing so incorrectly), but it's not actually incorrect to use till to mean the same thing as until. TMYK!

Good afternoon and happy NBW advocates!

Finally getting around to have some spare time, free of any long walk and excursions and hailing from Crete for the time being.

This “me-time” moment had me ordering a Kaiser Pilsner from Greece, brewed over here for decades with the apparent same recipes and ingredients. As a side this is also my 500th beer rated here, bit of a milestone:

It’s a large, 500ml bottle poured into its proper tall glassware.

Look is a golden pale color, left a solid three inches white head quickly fading under the heat here.

    Smells of grassy/herbal notes.

Taste is pretty crisp and clean, fairly dry and bitter, mildly hoppy.

Mouthfeel is pretty thin bodied if a bit overly bitter and unpleasant as it rapidly warm up here on the beach, hardly the ideal condition to try it if I’m being honest.

Overall, an “okay” Pilsner that doesn’t blow me away, it goes down well with any Greek meal no doubt, but on an empty stomach didn’t make it that much for me, not memorable.

Wow some beer and what a great review. I love reviews like that where I almost can taste it.

And regarding until, till, and 'til, it is NOT wrong to use 'til, as it is a perfectly valid form of until, and as concerns us poets, is one fewer syllable. I always knew till also was correct, but not until now knew that it predated the word until itself. I don't use till to mean until because it is spelled the same as a different word that is a different part of speech with a completely unrelated meaning.

Nice fall-like day here in MN as I wait for the Iowa-Iowa State game this afternoon. Should be a close, ugly game like usual between these teams.

How about a nice IPA, Pizza Port Vibrant Views:

Appearance: Mostly clear yellow, big head.

Smell: Citrus with a side of berries.

Taste: Some sweetness to start, then a nice berry fruitiness in the mid-palate. Finishes with a dry citrus that makes you want another drink. Low-moderate bitterness.

Overall: Another Pizza Port beer from the first drop here in MN. A nice modern IPA, interesting mix of citrus and berry-like flavors with nice drinkability.

I am exactly the same there. I normally use 'til if I mean to abbreviate until, as there's no chance of confusing it with another word. But in the parlance of the kids, I was today years old when I learned that till wasn't a failed attempt at shortening until, and in fact predated it.

Thanks for the kind words!

Autumn is approaching. I'm waking up to temperatures in the 60s and rising to the 80s. Quite comfortable, and we're still enjoying the pool.
My new beer for today is 100 Degrees from Jester King, a farmhouse ale with lemon peel and ginger'
The beer is a hazy light orange color with a one-finger white head. A bit of lace.
Aroma of lemon and floral hops.
Great taste. Lots of lemon/lemon peel. Ginger well-represented. A tiny bit of hop bitterness.
    Dry finish.
    A nice beer.

That is fantastic news. I am very happy for you.
Unless the brewing company states their aim, then any take on their aim is an assumption (even if an "educated" one). You seem to be acknowledging that anyway. I haven't seen anything from Ommegang that states they were trying to create a Belgian version of a German lager. Maybe they were doing just that (and maybe they've stated that), but maybe not, and the company doesn't have as strong of a Belgian theme as they once did. Please know that I am not implying that Ommegang is doing anything wrong with their approach to the beer.

Well, this is what BeerAdvocate states:

Describe your overall impression of the beer.
    Examples:

    • How was the overall drinking experience?
    • What did you find pleasurable or objectionable about it?
    • Offer suggestions for improvement.
Thanks for the tag. I think of Newburgh Brown Ale as a little gem because it's weaker than the average craft brown ale at just 4.2%... and there are so few options of brown ale to choose from in general. That ABV is low for craft, but it still shows it's craft beer allegiance compared to Manns' 2.8%. It's all related to the @utopiajane discussion since Newburgh states it's "our version of a London Style Brown Ale" but then state: "in the south of England, they prefer their brown ale maltier and lower in alcohol. Here in Newburgh, we tend to agree." I think "lower in alcohol" is relative to what's around you. People can decide how draconian they want to be with all this stuff. Manns Brown Ale is THE icon of the style, but brewers in the south of England don't necessarily brew their brown ales as weak in alcohol as Manns (and that's without even getting into brown beer pre-Manns).

Having said all that, I stopped buying Newburgh Brown Ale after being a big supporter of it years ago. Sometimes all it takes is one unhappy QC experience and you stop buying beer from a particular producer... or you at least become really cautious. It's hard to shake that one bad experience even if it's severely outweighed by all the good ones. Now I think I'll grab a Newburgh Brown the next time I see one though. (I haven't seen it in a long time).

I know exactly what you mean here, for me it was Von Trapp Oktoberfest; which really surprised me given their reputation and brewhouse. I hadn't bought it in I think 4-5 years; this year after an @shkin review I revisited it. Long story short I went back for another six pack to stock the fridge for fall weather.

I hope the same happens to you should you find some Newburgh Brown :beers:

Hello to all those enjoying a new beer this weekend. I am having a new beer from a fairly new brewery - one that had been added to the database here, but without any beers added. I corrected the latter situation by adding the two beers I bought from Blindhouse Beer Company yesterday.

This brewery is from my once hometown, opened by a brewer that spent some time working at Triple Crossing a couple hundred miles east within Virginia (if my limited research is correct). It was interesting to see that all the beers my store got from the brewery were farmhouse / saison inspired. The first one, which I am enjoying now after writing up my review, is called Blurred Perceptions - a blended saison using Virginia Vidal Blanc grape pomace.

    A quick Google search yielded:
Hmmm... doesn't sound that appetizing, being the waste of a process - but then again, alcohol is a "byproduct" of yeast digestion, so here we are.

This beer greeted me with a lovely, familiar aroma as I opened it. The beer came from the bottle with an obvious haze / cloudiness, and setting the beer down after staring at the white bubbles during the pour, the haze was confirmed. The fluffy head in the pic reduced to a thick collar, but was easily revived with a swirl.

This is not a surprise, given the lively, prickly carbonation that highlights the feel of this light, dry offering. The aromas have fruit (lemon and nectarine), black pepper, grass/hay, and a barely perceivable hint of farmhouse funk. I loved the aroma.

The taste had aspects of the aroma within it, but the beer seemed to evaporate from my tongue so quickly that the fruit never realized its full potential. The grass and pepper same through mid-to-late in the taste, and the oak tannin hold court in the finish (more noticeable as the beer warms up a little).

To me, this is more like the farmhouse saisons I recall first getting into craft beer. My impression is that American brewers leaned a little more into fruity and less dry versions over time, before somewhat abandoning the style more recently. I hope the other bottle is as enjoyable to me as this one.
