Another Calif IPA-- For What It's Worth IPA from Liquid Gravity Brewing in SLO.

Inviting aroma of green melon and lime, which seems to be what I smell a lot in IPAs these days. Fragrance lasts into the aftertaste with a modest bitterness. On the sweet side, malty, tangy. Strong peach and lime taste. Really quite good, but seriously fruity and rather sharp.

    2sp pony boi light lager
...incredibly clear light gold appearance with medium carbonation. Has a thin watered down feel
...aroma is by far the best part.yeast, fresh baked bread, cracker, cereal and mildly floral
...taste,not so much as it just comes off similar to the body, watered down and weak.
..overall its decent for what it is and I actually like having something light to start before I open a heavy hitter[IMG]

So this beer has not been canned in 2 years, and it is one I use to thoroughly enjoyed; couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it in 6 packs. It seems like it has been updated recipe wise so I’m reviewing it as new…the label now says “American Stout” now and is quite hoppier than it used to be; and given the reviews, including my old one, the hops are definitely way more pronounced now, and spoiler, it's awesome! Full of Chinook and Cascade goodness...

Regardless, this new iteration deserved to be shared in this thread of beer loving nerds and having drank it, it definitely qualifies as new to me.

Tonewood - Still Night (American Stout 4%)

Pours quiet; darkest of browns, beautiful light brown head; thick, luscious and lingering; great lacing, we got a looker.

Nose shows hops; pine and citrus; comes off to me as a little grapefruit like, lots of bakers chocolate and good roast presence.

Taste is burnt toast without being acrid; dark chocolate, dark roast coffee bite, light hints of licorice; and then…glorious American hops; theres a really nice mix of pine and citrus...the balance and back and forth between roast/dark malt and the hops is something special.

Light body, but feels appropriately full, lighter carbonation, perfectly smooth, great bitterness on the finish; hops lend some really good lingering stickiness on the finish.

These are the beers that deserve 5s IMO; the ones that just hits every single note for personal enjoyment. This is a stout without question, the hops are prominent but that rich roasty and dark malt is more dominant. I love this beer! This is a beer that will be stocked and replenished as winter goes on, I sure hope they canned a lot of it, I may just stock up now to be safe

Bottled on 9/4/24 and came my way via Colorado via a world class BA! Saved for a special occasion which is I want it tonight! Pours outstanding golden yellow with a pillow head that stands up for justice. Outstanding look, just handsome. Aroma includes lemon, citrus, pine. Taste combines lemony grapefruit, piney bitter with a total clean finish. Feels , oh it gives me the feels: smooth, medium, clean, again slight lemony piney bitter with a clean warms buzz in my mouth. I am thankful I got to try, and if I could get this, I would always have plenty in the GE 1981 International^Harvester-Coolerator FutureForwardFridginator5000!

Good evening, gang. Kind of a forced scramble mode day today. Our bell choir plays at church tomorrow and we rehearse Tuesdays, but we had one away on vacation, one ill, and one "forgot"... We are playing two songs with 7 people and one with 5...you can't cover missing parts like you can with a vocal choir. So we pieced it together this morning. The missus is the director, so if nothing else today's workI'll, backed her off the ledge (and made my day slightly more peaceful).

One more trip to Gnome-land and splitting with my better half - hey, half a gnome is better than none. Speaking of which there are now 9 gnomes in the house and they have been mysteriously migrating as the newcomers explore...

Brasserie d'Achouffe N'ice Chouffe. This is a 10% BDSA with orange and thyme.

Pours a tad bit ugly...dirty mahogany color with a frothy but short-lived beige head. No particular cling or lacing.

Smells initially sweet, fruity, and of Belgian yeast. Raisins, fig, brown sugar, some dark bread with orange and herbal notes that I can't say for sure is thyme as it's not very assertive. Judiciously used is what I'll go with.

The taste starts a bit jumbled, but it sorts itself out. It hits with fruitiness - raisins and a bit of fig. Brown breadiness. Sweetness like caramel and slightly burnt sugar. As it sort of defines itself on the fly, the orange emerges, and an earthy hercaceousness. A little brown sugar sneaks in. Potent but brief vegetal bitterness. And it is boozy but not smack in the mouth boozy. It all melds pretty n'icely. As it warms there is some banana, fruity esters like plum and pear, a touch of bubblegum, and the thyme becomes more defined. It all ends up playing nicely.

Feel seems a little light for the style making this an easy drinker. Moderately carbed. It's not drying, kinda neutral. Warming.

Overall very nice take on the style. The flavors resolve nicely even though it's a tad jagged at first. Complex without being overdone, they did not go for the more is better approach. Although its warming, the 10% is a little sneaky. Thinking around a 4.1 or so.

Wet Toof by the Veil, dated 10/25/24. 6.3% ABV hazy IPA with orange juice, wet hopped with citra, mosaic, and columbus. Pours a nice bright orange, tons of foam and stickiness. Intense orange peel on the nose, with some sweet juice and grassiness. Flavor goes crazy. The immediate upfront taste is grapefruit and orange, then some rose and piney notes, before finishing with smooth, soft orange juice and a light, clean sweetness. Mouthfeel is sticky and smooth but not dense like the other wet hop IPA I had from them. Overall, very fresh, delicious, exceptionally clean. I liked wetferrari better and drove an hour and a half to get another can, but Wet Toof is still really tasty.

Big thanks to @ChicagoJ for kicking things off this weekend. I'm starting with Coffee Orbital Distortion from Temporal Artisan Ales in Vancouver, Canada. This is a blend of imperial stouts aged in Blanton's barrels, partially double barrel aged in coconut rum barrels and amburana barrel. Conditioned on esperanca coffee from Brazil, roasted locally by Prototype Coffee. 12.93% ABV.

Pulled this one from the fridge and let it sit out for 20 minutes before opening. Pours a very thick black with zero head. The nose is wonderful. The amburana is there immediately, which makes me so happy as I LOVE amburana wood. Coconut, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, and bourbon also come through. Dark fruit emerges after a minute, with notes of cherries and plums.

The taste is insanely smooth. Milk chocolate, toffee, rum, coconut, vanilla, amburana, soft coffee notes, tobacco, bitter oak, port, molasses, pie crust, herbal tea, and a hint of black licorice. The bourbon is definitely there - I can almost recognize the Blanton's barrels if I squint.

The mouthfeel is thick and creamy. Nice long aftertaste and finishes with salted toffee. Overall, a banger of a stout.

From the BA Big Box, poured thick murk golden opaque with a limp head than disappeared to a thin thinness with no head, aroma is pineapple peach, with taste following. It’s not bad but off putting look makes me feel like this beer’s sister is hotter. Overall I’d go out, but not date, if you know what I mean.

Happy Saturday all! Started the day finishing wrapping a large maple tree with lights. 800’ of lights. Don’t think I ever want to do that again. Came home to help celebrate the step son’s birthday, he wanted to play table games. So we played table games.
For dessert I told them I’d just have a pastry stout- so grabbed this one from the cellar:
Not fresh so it might not be quite the same as fresh. But what I got was a stout black pour with a much shorter than expected light brown head. I mean, this isn’t barrel aged so it should have some carbonation.
The taste is dominated by a charred sugar, which when I thought about it, the dessert it’s named for has a caramelized sugar top- which you get with a torch. So charred sugar kinda makes sense. Some coffee bitter flavors edge out the vanilla and malt char provides a bit more harsh that keeps it from being stupid sweet.
I think if it was better balanced it would be a good beer, as it is, well, glad I didn’t get a 6 pack.
Back later with my nightcap. Hopefully you are all having a great day!

I was at the release party (that’s what they called it, there just wasn’t many people there) and you would think I would have asked them, right? But I didn’t even see the letters making up the word for weeks.
I will write them and ask though, because it is just weird.

Okay another BIF#18/LIF Mystery beer from @snaotheus Thanks!

My initial thoughts were pretty on target once I poured a little, smelled a little & tasted a little. Guessed Dark Lager. It is Czech Dark Lager from Structures Brewing ( Washington State ), 5.1% ABV; overall rating of 4.1

Pours a chill hazed mahogany/ebony with one finger+ of tan head.

S: A little toasty, mostly roasty with a little hint of smoke. A little Molasses & dark bread once warmed up, a little bit of plum too

T: Roasty notes, some leafy hops, a touch of smoke, Baker's Chocolate & dryness, faint black currant flavor on the tip of the tongue up front. Roastyness & a touch of dryness dominates once warmed up, traces of charred grain & Anise as well. Finishes a little dry with some molasses notes, roastyness & a little leafy hop

MF: Light/medium body, pretty firm initial carbonation

Nice one to enjoy slowly, the flavors open up as this beer breathes & warms up

Next up is the #1 ranked Belgian IPA on BA. Houblon Chouffe. 9% ABV. Got this in a mixed pack with the glass.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours semi-opaque orange with fluffy white head. Tons of lacing. The nose immediately comes across as a strong Belgian blonde ale. Definitely not picking up much in the way of hops. Lovely notes of caramel, orange, wheat, pepper, meringue, malts, and some sweet candy.

The taste is fantastic. Here the hops make an appearance. Tropical notes - mango mostly. Some leathery bitterness, a hint of pine and clove. Getting some fresh apple, apricot, Belgian yeast, nutmeg, bread, orange, and again a nice solid layers of malts. So good! The mouthfeel is medium bodied and fairly dry. Nice finish of oak and orange. Overall, a wonderful beer. I understand why it's ranked #1.

    Bottle Logic - Pandanmonium

500ml bottle served in a little Hoppin Frog snifter-y glass. 2024 release. @Beersnake gave it to me a few weeks ago.

Pours black with a big, fizzy, dark head that settles fairly quickly and leaves little trace behind -- there's a moderately thick ring and a thin island in the center. Smell is big, chocolate and booze, molasses (maybe burnt molasses) and coconut. Vanilla, maybe. Nothing I could point to specifically as pandan, because it's not something I would recognize.

Taste is...different. Something gives me a green leaf vibe which is combining strongly with the coconut, which I'm guessing that's the pandan. Chocolate and molasses and now maybe some chicory coffee, still heavily boozy, maybe the oak comes through more clearly on its own. Vanilla is in there, but more supporting than leading.

Mouthfeel is medium to thick, slight effervescence. Overall, very interesting, good beer.

Next one is from @muchloveforhops3 Prost Doug!

Flathead Lake Brewing Co.'s The Centennial IPA, 7.3% ABV; 3.46 overall

Pours a hazed honey color with a thumb+ of pearl colored head. Bestaspect of this beer, great head retention & lacing

S: Bready, toasty, hops seem AWOL until the last few ounces

T: Toasty, grassy, a little bit of pineyness & some astringency up front. More toastyness, a touch honey malt, pretty dry, some pine once this beer warms up a bit. Finishes with sweet toastyness, some piney notes & dryness

MF: Medium body, moderate carbonation that then turn a little prickly, skews malty

Tastes like an IPA from the 90s or an Amber Ale, okay to drink, but not one I'd revisit. The hops just don't really show up. ABV seems to be non-factor, not really helping with flavor or body

Hi all, said I’d be back.
Every once in a while we get lucky - took a chance on a few stouts that were having hot air poured on them. But it worked out in this case.
[IMG] Bottled in ‘22 so wasn’t sure what to expect.
The pour was like used motor oil, thick, viscous pure black. The head was about about 1/2” and dark brown at the bottom, light brown on top. No lacing.
The taste was surprisingly good, vanilla, hazelnut and really smooth coffee. The stout was not MIA, present with the chocolate and coffee and leather and dark fruit. Good stuff.
The feel matched the appearance, viscous, thick.
OA, may need to go back and see if there are any other ones to rescue.
Hope you all have a great evening, see you tomorrow for NBS!

Yeah, it’s got to be accounts that make these designs, and it’s obvious they don’t drink beer. We used to get Speedway and Ten-Fidy but they haven’t been around for three or four years now. Annoying to say the least.
