Another great beer courtesy of @TCgenny. StrangeBird brewing's Serpent Deflector. A 10% 3XIPA Pils Malt, Raw Wheat, Flaked Oats, HBC586, Citra and Idaho 7.
I was going to do a full review, but rating only. RIght after I poured it, my grandson, son, daughter in-law and extra dog showed up. Chaos has ensued. Maybe its a good thing that this beer is a 10 percenter. I rate 4.0's across the board.

Clear, dark brown pour, same appearance in the glass; thick, light khaki colored head; nice partial sheets of foam inside the glass, Very nice dark malt aroma with a note of roasted grain; richly sweet; hints of toffee and vanilla. Slyly rich malt flavor mirrors the aroma qualities; cocoa; mild underlying bitterness; touch of alcohol peeking through the earthy sweetness. Smooth mouthfeel; warm and velvety; a touch of boozy heat.

Overall, this is a nice Baltic porter, smooth with just a bit of boozy edge offsetting the dark malt sweetness.

New German-brewed doppelbock in my glass:
Ettaler Curator Dunkler Doppelbock • 9% ABV • no canning date

I grabbed this a couple weeks ago thinking *for sure* it was an American-brewed doppelbock. The vivid, colorful label felt very American craft beer-like at a glance, but clearly it's a German import, one I've not heard of.

Right off the bat the nose is pure fruitcake, sweet and fruity of the dark-dried fruits/plums/figs kind with that amazing candylike pop that somehow isn't too sweet ... I don't know how they do that, but I get it from doppels, quads and Belgian strong dark ales. There's a nice yeasty pizza crust aroma too, another signature of those styles in my experience.

The flavor follows the nose but is darker with a nice balancing earthiness that keeps it from being overly sweet. Raisins and licorice jump out alongside a fruitcake with a pinch of nutmeg in it. Only one minor glitch: a slight hint of metal flavor that shows up late in the development. At times that note tastes more like a dusting of cocoa powder, which is quite tasty, so it's not overly off-putting. It's also a note I associate with the style — I usually find it in Paulaner Salvator and get it in spades in Spaten's Optimator.

I love this beer. Expectations were low b/c I knew nothing about it (obviously ), but I took a punt on it b/c I love doppelbocks, and it was a perfect gamble.

This beer is Klosterbrauerei Ettal's imported version at 9% ABV. The label says it's brewed in Germany, canned in the U.S. The domestic version is 7%.

    Cheers!

First new beer this weekend. Back from trying lots of new beers in Europe. In fact, I reviewed 36 new beers over there. Now to this one. Black Fire from OddPitch Brewing in Montana. A big thanks to Doug (@muchloveforhops3 ) for sending this one as return fire in the Barleywine/Stout BIF. This is an imperial stout aged for 12 months in whisky barrels, with hazelnuts, toasted coconut, and Madagascar vanilla. 11% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours black with almost no head. Doesn't look super thick. The nose is chocolate, coconut, vanilla, nuts, barrel, and a bit of roasted malts. Quite smooth.

The taste is really nice. Malty. Roasted malts, black licorice, dark chocolate, vanilla, coconut, hazelnut. The barrel is interesting. I almost get a port note, but it's whiskey. Definitely a mix of sweet fruit and oaky bitterness. Maybe a touch of tobacco in there as well.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied and the aftertaste leans towards the bitter side. Great stout overall.

Brewers notes: BA Doppio Affogato leads with an assertive notes of freshly baked brownies, vanilla icing, sticky toffee chocolate on the nose followed by vanilla bean, espresso and molasses on the palate. In 2017 we introduced Affogato, a collaboration with J. Wakefield that would simultaneously launch our series of confectionary inspired stouts. Since then the Affogato family has grown with increasingly impactful iterations including Barrel Aged Affogato and most recently Doppio Affogato, released in celebration of our 10th anniversary in 2023. Today with holiday markets in full swing at our Fort Point and Canton locations we proudly introduce the latest addition to the family tree, Barrel Aged Doppio Affogato.

Presenting a viscous pitch-black, Barrel Aged Doppio Affagato is decadent and palate-coating. We perceive aromas of vanilla cream, fresh-pulled espresso, rich dark chocolate, and pronounced, oaky bourbon. Boasting a full, satisfying body and an indulgent finish, this is a notable and highly limited addition to our dessert series, ready to savor this holiday season.

Chilled bottle poured into a pretentious beer glass creates a thick brown motor oil with a two finger dense foam cap
Faint bourbon aroma , hint of espresso
Taste is chocolate brownie batter, dark chocolate, espresso beans
Mouthfeel is smooth, an espresso bitterness lingers on the back of the tongue
    Good beer

Red Red Wine from Barreled Souls. A barleywine aged in red wine barrels for just over 12 months. 13.7% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a very dark brown with minimal head.

The nose is quite nutty. A bit surprising. Armagnac, red wine, toffee, banana, and malts.

The taste is super smooth. Again, walnuts are coming through on the taste initially. Followed by soft notes of red wine, caramel, raisins, bread, oak, tannins, and cranberries. Very interesting. I can't say I've tried a barleywine like this.

American Solera Know What I Mean Red IPA, 7.0% ABV; 3.77 overall

Pours an effervescent honey/amber color with 2 fingers of fluffy cream-colored head. Very good head retention & better lacing

    S: Bready, toasty

T: Follows the nose, loads of pine & dryness up front. More drynesss, toastyness & pine as this beer warms up. Finishes piney, toasty, & dry

MF: Medium body, dialed back carbonation, pretty good balance

Solid take on the style, easy enough to drink, was hoping for more, not one I'd pull the trigger on again. The body is the main flaw in this

Hoppin frog stocking stuffer chocolate orange ale
    ....pale orange light amber appearance
...medium light carbonation with about a medium body.
.... aroma is is straight up chocolate orange cream candy the type you'd find in an assortment candy box. The chocolate is mild but the orange is a strong mix of orange oil, candied orange peel and fruit.
...taste is almost identical to aroma with out much deviation from that.
...overall its an interesting dessert beer. Couldn't do two in a row but good nonetheless.

    Good evening all!
Went to get my allotment of No Rules at Perrin and picked up a couple of these-
    [IMG]
The pour is like that of a breakfast coffee with a light brown head that is so active it raced to dissipate during the pour.
The taste is crazy with barrel presence; much oak and the normal sweetness of the bourbon presence has the flavor yet not the sweetness.
The feel is very good, lightly viscous, excellent sipping beer.
OA, very good, wish Perrin released these beyond the brewery.

Anthem Brewing ( OKC ) Cosmic Heart Doppelbock, 9.0% ABV; 4.19 overall

Pours an effervescent & ruddy amber/chestnut with one finger of tight tan head. Pretty good head retention & great lacing

S: Cakey, dark fruit, brown bread, a whisper of smoke

T: Follows the nose, woody & leafy hops as well & dryness up front. A little bit of figs & raisins, candied cherry mixing in with dryness, leafy tobacco hops & brown bread as this beer warms up, caramel notes as well. Finishes with a little toastyness, dryness, brown sugar & leafy hops

MF: Medium body, restrained carbonation; great balance for the style, a little sticky on the lips & teeth

Hits all the right notes, style-wise, ABV is stealth. One the edge of greatness, super solid Doppel

Sunshine Believer from Bow & Arrow Brewing (Albuquerque)

They call this an "International-style Pilsner." Inviting aroma that is fruity yet tends toward the vegetable kingdom. Even a whiff of clean motor oil. The taste is oddly fruity, very grapey as in grape juice. Lime and honeydew melon as well as fresh green peas. This is light and unusually flavored with all the aromatics as a bonus.

North coast barrel aged old rasputin imperial stout
...solid black appearance with just a slight bit of lacing
....light carbonation with the body being just above average with a bit of a slick full creamy feel.
..aroma is roasted malt, boozy, alcohol, with some wood from the barrel showing up.
There's some bourbon but like the wood it incorporated incredibly well.
...taste is boozy, alcohol, malt, roasted malt and wood. Same as the aroma theres some bourbon but its perfectly, smoothly incorporated into the rest of the flavors similar to the wood
....overall its its a phenomenal imperial stout, one of the best beers I've had in awhile[IMG]

Have a good saturday. I worked today and got 4 days in this week, and a bad sunburn. I luckily got an assignment that got extended after we found out there was an additional defect that increases our inspection rate 10-fold and requires me to do math on scratch paper to keep track of the number of good/bad parts :grimacing:. Plus I noticed when we suddenly changed part numbers and everyone else missed it, because we were looking at pallet numbers instead the whole time. The place is hiring quality engineers still, I would give it a try. I don't have ISO:9000 or my greenbelt, but still thinking about it  They are looking for automotive OEM experience, and I have 12 years, so maybe I have a chance. I like engineering even if it's stressul as hell to launch new products.

I got to try out my new prescription Sunglasses all week, going to rain soon. I listened to 3 books during the week. At Home by Bill Bryson(the history of every room in the house, plus living conditions), Perfect Son by Freida McFadden(psychopathic family mystery), and Missoula By Jon Krakauer(true crime). all 4.25/5 books.

Wernesgrüner Lemon Radler. Aldi Beer, but interestingly brewed at Carlsberg in Hamburg. 40% pils, 60% lemonade(including orange juice concentrate). Slightly hazy juice pour, overall good pils-like clarity. Poor head retention, no lacing. Aromas of big lemon/orange juice, citrus zest, white sugar, light grains/herbal hops. Taste follows up with fresh lemon/orange juice, citrus zest, white sugar, light grain/herbal hops. Light herbal bitterness and fruit tartness on the finish. Medium-high carbonation and light body, crisp, clean refreshing finish. Almost bone dry, and slight ting of cloying sweetness off set by light acidy after the finish. A lot of authentic citrus vibrancy throughout and very drinkable. Very good summer style slammer, would prefer more malt/hop presence, but it's perfectly clean on lager flavors. 3.85/5

Pours an effervescent mahogany/ebony with fast falling tan head. Zero carbonation & lacing, pretty viscous

S: Coffee, iron & maple syrup

T: Follows the nose, brown sugar & dryness as well up front. Maple candy, coffee, some woody hops, dryness & brown sugar once warm. Finishes dry with some iron notes coffee, maple & brown sugar

MF: Medium body, slight carbonation. Thins out & carbonation flattens a little once warmed up, skews sweet

Great drinkability for the ABV & flavor profile, this could ambush you easily. Would love to see a BA amped up version of this. In my flavor wheelhouse
