Candied Walnuts Prodigality from Jackie O's. A barleywine aged in bourbon barrels and conditions on maple syrup, wildflower honey, and walnuts. A whopping 15.6% ABV. Canned in late August.

Poured at fridge temp from a can. Pours a murky brown with minimal head. I'm not going to lie - this is not a good looking beer.

The nose is wonderful. Bourbon, honey, caramel, walnuts, maple, vanilla, and a hint of leather.

The taste is actually fantastic. The walnuts really pop here. If you like walnuts, you will love this beer. It's like a bowl of walnuts drizzled in maple syrup. Also getting a nice boozy bourbon, although this tastes way lower than 15.6% ABV. Vanilla, toffee, brown sugar, and figs for days. Lovely.

The mouthfeel is pretty viscous and creamy. The aftertaste is caramel, maple, and honey. Great barleywine! Definitely a different take!

Wise man heavens climate stout. Aromas of dark chocoate, coffee, cocoa, dark bread, herbal, grass, light smoke/char/pepper/pine and yeast earth. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread/crust, nuts, wood, mint, peppercorn, pine, citrus peel, light smoke/char, and yeast earthiness. Medium high pine, herbal, spicy, citrus rind, charred bitter finish. Medium carb and medium plus body. Balanced creamy bready malts, sticky resinous hop, and chalky roast mouthfeel. Lingering resin dryness and minimal hop astringency. Incredible malt complexity and balanced American hop showcase. Spot on style at 6.1%. 4.2/5

    Other half extra extra broccoli
...a very murky, cloudy mango puree appearance
...medium light carbonation which quickly dissipates and just left a bit of an effervescent feel. Body felt a little heavy, syrupy like
....aroma is fruit salad from a can with some malt and caramel in the background. Sort of like drinking the juice from a can of fruit cocktail.
.... I should just be banned by BA from being allowed to rate this type of beer as it obviously isn't my preferred style.
I actually wish there was some actual broccoli in it to add some balance to the fruit juice effect[IMG]

Tonight Im starting off with a beer from my trip to Montreal over the summer. This can has been in my cellar since the trip. This is Repit Helles from BreWsky in Montreal. The beer is 4.8%. I got to add this one to the BA DB.

    Onto my review:

I am sampling a lightly chilled 16 oz can poured into my dimple mug. I picked up this can during a visit to Montreal in the summer and this can has been in my cellar since we returned home.
There is no date stamp on the can or label. But assume it was relatively fresh at the Annex location where I purchased it.
The beer pours a bright clear golden color with a few lazy streams of carbonation rising to the surface. A frothy bleached white head foams up about 1 cm and fades fairly quickly to a weak edging. Only a little scattered lattice on swirls and sips.
Aroma is some mild grainy malt and a bit of a scone type smell. I maybe have some light floral hop note, but overall the nose is very mild. Certainly not boozy.
First sip reveals a light body and smooth texture, bordering on watery as the beer is very drinkable. Carbonation is fine and tingly.
Flavor is also grainy malt and a little bit of sweetness, again biscuity or scone flavor for me. Not really much else going on complexity wise and the finish is pretty dry, encouraging me to take another sip.
This is a very drinkable beer and Im enjoying its simplicity, seems a solid example of the style.

I'm also sampling TJ's latest vintage ale this weekend - I think this is the first time it wasn't brewed by Unibroue? Van Steenberge are also behind Gulden Draak, which would make for an interesting comparison...cheers!

Poured from a caged-and-corked 750mL bottle into my Westvleteren goblet.

Murky bole body beneath an almond cap; fine creamy lacing; very good retention.

Malt forward aroma with walnut, toast, fig, date, orange peel, and cherry pits.

Rich, slightly boozy palate entry - caramel, brown bread, raisin, dried cherry, blackcurrant, toffee, and plum torte lead into the medium-dry slightly earthy finish with hints of loam and tobacco leaf. Complex and satisfying.

Medium-full bodied, hefty carbonation, warming but not hot.

An outstanding value, this would really elevate a meal or a cheese pairing.

From my recent Tavour box “Keep It” IPA by Anchorage Brewing Company:

Poured pale gold, and a semi hazy; tight white head; minimal cap retention; solid ring; sudsy lacing. Grapefruit nose. Semi bitter grapefruit rind followed by some lemon peel. Medium light body; moderate minus carbonation; no astringency; light, crisp feel; no warmth from 6.4% ABV. Mild bitter grapefruit linger; an easy drinking IPA with great nose and taste; sick can artwork as usual.

Cigar City Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Brown Ale, 5.5% ABV; 3.67 overall

Pours an effervescent & chill-hazed hazel with one finger of cream-colored head. Never completely loses the chill haze, below average head retention & lacing

S: Cinnamon & brown sugar, iron notes as well, first time I've smelled this in a brown ale. Nose didn't sell this for me

T: Follows the nose, minus the iron, some vanilla, a little dryness & a lot of oatmeal cookie here up front. Hints of raisin mix in with brown sugar, vanilla & cinnamon as this beer warms up, dryness, perhaps from the lactose? At touch of Pecan Hull bitterness as well, works for balance. Finishes a little dry with cookie sweetness & just a little nutty bitterness

MF: Medium body, slight carbonation, body thins a bit as this beer warms up

Credit where credit is due, they didn't go crazy with the cinnamon, pretty drinkable. If everything else was as good as the flavor, this would've been an A/A+ beer

Another from the mad man from Green Bay, Wisconsin.
The pour is stout black, if not darker. The light brown head shows up and leaves without so much as a by your leave.
The taste is where this one shines. Dark bread, whiskey, bourbon, caramel, figs, leather and seriously dark chocolate.
    Did I mention the bourbon?
The feel is lightly viscous, which for me is fine, but belies the ABV. Way too easy to quaff quickly.
OA, really good stout that I very much enjoyed.
    Thank you Micah!

Numero 2 tonight - A BBA BW from LERVIG, Norway - Paragon 2022 By Rackhouse:

Poured at 58°; dark murky brown body; light tan head, which vanished quickly, leaving no cap retention, ring, nor lace; thin legs at best. Bourbon, fig, toffee nose. Taste follows nose; some sweet caramel; Okey vanilla; sugary raisins. Medium full body; silky, smooth feel; light carbonation; full mouth warmth from 14.4% ABV; dry barrel finish. Overall, the alcohol is well hidden; layers of flavors from base and barrel; outstanding.

Score: 4.47 rDev 0. Mine is the first review.

A really nice BW. Not too sweet and quite enjoyable to parse the base vs. barrel flavors. Well done!

Ommegang Everything Naughty White Chocolate Imperial Blonde Stout, 9.5% ABV; 2.91 overall

Pours a chill-hazed gold with a pinky of cream-colored head.

S: Vanilla, some coffee, honeysuckle, some perfumy hopes

T: Vanilla, dry oaky notes & a little white chocolate, green apple notes & woody hops up front. A little dark chocolate, some coffee, cinnamon & pear notes as this beer warms up, almost seems more like a mulled cider. Finishes with white chocolate, apple cider notes & cinnamon & a little coffee

    MF: Medium body, slight carbonation

Super confusing beer, no fan of this genre of stout, but this is a real hell of a mess IMHO. Doesn't deliver the advertised flavors in sufficient quantity & so many off flavors. Stayed with this hoping it would get better, should've just drain poured it

2nd beer tonight is from Fox Farm in Salem, Connecticut. This is Sway , their American Lager, registering 4.7% ABV. gonna aim to loop a 3rd beer in before end of the night.

    onto my review:
Sampling a chilled 12 oz can poured into my .5L dimple mug. Canned on 8/27/2025. Picked up at the brewery about a month ago, so within 2 months of canning. Should be totally fine tonight.
The beer pours into my glass a bright clear gold color with frothy bleached white head of about 2 cm. This foam is fading rapidly leaving some windowpane lattice on my glass.
Aroma is a little grainy malt and a good dose of grassy and black tea hop notes. No abv hints on the nose.
First sip reveals a light body with smooth to slightly watery texture. FIne tingly carbonation gently rolls across my palate.
The beer drinks very easy on the physical traits.
Flavor is similar to the nose advertisements. I get some biscuity and cereal malt notes with a decent bit of grassy hops and some tea bite finish. Also dry on the finish which encourages me to take another sip.
Very clean and drinkable lager that has a solid hop profile and balanced malt notes to keep the beer interesting. Glad I picked up a few of these cans.

awww shoot! back 2 back posts!?!?! y'all are slacking! Its a dreary chilly evening here in Connecticut , so enough yellow beers from me in this thread (amirite @micada ?) and time for something heartier. This is Firestone Walker and Paramburana, an imperial stout barrel aged with amburana wood extract (?) The beer is 12.8% ABV and was sent to me, by Mr Imperial Stout himself @Resistance88 thank you Tomas!!

    onto my review:
Sampling a cellar temp 12 oz bottle poured into my snifter. beer received as part of a trade.
the beer pours a dark black coffee color with creamy tan head of about 1 cm foaming up. This head forms a sturdy edge layer and one large island on the surface of the beer. No light is passing through my glass.
Before I go much further, I will say that I usually LOVE imperial stouts with amburana wood aging, so I have high hopes here.
The aroma on this beer is what I imagined and hoped for with some roasted malt, dark chocolate fudge, a little wooden barrel character, and a healthy bit of cinnamon and gingerbread cookie. AS the beer warms I get some molasses too, never any hop notes and not boozy, fusol or peppery. ABV is hidden on the nose.
First sip reveals a medium body with fine , gentle and spacious carbonation. Texture is pretty smooth and not sticky like some bigger beers can be, no coating of my palate on each sip.
Flavor is similar to the nose with dark chocolate fudge and some molassess and brown sugar, slightly roasty, and there is a again a good healthy dose of cinnamon. Not really boozy with no warming and no peppery bite. Hops are absent throughout.
This is a solid and drinkable imperial stout and the amburana shines throughout the beer. Very glad to have tried this one and would definitely enjoy drinking another one.
