    Appearance: Cloudy yellow-orange, big head.

    Smell: Citrus and cloves.

Taste: Starts mildly sweet, continues with mild orange, yeast, bread, and maybe a hint of banana. Smooth feel. Finishes with mild sweetness.

Overall: The classic hefe, I probably had it at some point in the past 25 years but no records of it. Easy drinking, flavorful, balanced. Classic hefeweizen.

    More Kansas haulage

Free State Beer John Brown Ale 5.5% ABV; 3.9 overall

This can pours an effervescent hazel color with a thumb+ of tan head. Average head retention & lacing

S: Toasty & nutty, lovely nose, coffee late, a bit of a detractor, although declared

T: Follows the nose, a little dry, a touch of cocoa & caramel plus woody hops up front. More coffee, some Diacetyl notes & woody hops as this beer warms up, more toasty notes. Finishes toasty with more coffee & woody hops

    MF: Medium body, slight carbonation

Not a bad Brown Ale. Just wanted more body & I am never going to be about a coffee taste in this style, they said subtle I disagree

Finally time for a beer! Tree is up and grandson and I will test the lights tomorrow. Our tradition is to decorate the tree with everyone that shows up on Christmas Eve.

    The beer:

This is Lavro from Sidereal Farm Brewery in Vassaboro, ME. It is their take on a Belgian Pale Ale in the Trappist tradition. On the educational label, it says Lavro means plow or cultivate and the brew is an ode to historic Trappist beers of Wester. Europe. "We gathered as much historical data as we could to produce an authentic replication of the style and sourced the same mixec culture used in a well- know Trappist monastery. When young it drinks like a rustic Belgian Pale Ale, but after 6 months to a year this beer will transform into a delicious funky brettfirward beer..."

Ok...so this can was made on 4/27/22 so it should be pretty ripe...

Pours slightly cloudy pale gold with a ridiculous rocky white head that coats the glass as it falls to a nice cap.

On the nose there is mild Brett funk and white wine grape must. Not picking up much malt but I do like the smell.

The taste is very mildly funky and carries the wine-like character as well. The malt is kinda bready. There's a nice honey-like sweetness and a bit of bitterness. What I'm not getting is much in the way of Belgian yeast character - not much in the ester department. It's there but fairly faint - getting some bubblegum and vague fruitiness. Very mild pepper after the swallow.

The feel is somewhat thick and slick.

Think it may be past it's prime but it still tastes good and is going down pretty easy. I'm thinking 3.75 or so.

    Eschenbacher export
...very clear amber appearance with a thick lasting head.
...medium bodied with about the same for the carbonation
..aroma has mild citrus fruit and peel, grain, cereal, cornbread and malt
...taste is definitely similar to aroma with the exception of a herbal earthy taste that lingers in the finish
...perhaps not world class but enjoyable [IMG]

Thanks to @jonphisher for kicking things off this weekend. I was flying back from the UK yesterday, so I'm a bit late to the game. This is my 300th review of the year, which is probably the most I've reviewed ever.

Double Barrel Dark Star from Fremont. This was aged for one year in 7-10 year old Kentucky bourbon barrels, and then ages for another in Woodford reserve bourbon barrels. 17% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a nice black with basically no head. The nose isn't shy. Boozy for sure. Vanilla, molasses, rich dark malts, bourbon, plums, and raisins. Very nice.

The taste is intense. Boozy. Molasses is strong on this. Chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, burnt toffee, intense prunes, malt balls, and a light layer of cinnamon. Lovely. The ABV is clearly high but it's not too overpowering on the taste. Any higher and it might be. Overall, a great beer.

Fair State FōNIō Krush Cold IPA, 6% ABV. Pours slightly-hazy orange, with a nice 4+ finger white head that left great lacing. Aroma is fruity. Taste is citrus, tropical fruit, and what I presume is fonio, quite bitter. Decent mouthfeel, overall very good.

Fonio is a west African grain. I've spent some time there, and grains such as fonio are staples to their diet.

Ozark Beer Co. Winter IPA ( Red IPA w/orange peel ), 6.3% ABV; 4.29 overall

Pours an effervescent amber/copper with 2 fingers of beige head. Nice head retention & lacing

    S: Oranges, a little toastyness

T: Toasty, dry, some orange bitterness up front & pine. Plenty of pine, toastyness & a little orange peel and caramel as this beer warms up. A touch of cakeyness in the finish, more orange peel & pine

MF: Medium body, moderate carbonation; good balance, wanted a little more body

Drinks pretty easy, if you like a piney IPA along the lines of Sierra Nevada Celebration, give this a try

My amber weekend continues and ends with this one from @vurt. Was pretty excited to see this one when I opened the box he sent me. I've seen and read about it in passing as a classic amber that's been around awhile, always a good sign.

I really wanted to have this beer tonight but I'm also sort of lazy and zoning out so I'm gonna go shorter review than normal but I hope to share my thoughts in a succinct manner. It was a long day and the brain needs to zone out with some hockey by the Christmas tree.

Mac and Jacks - African Amber (American Amber 5.8%)

Pours every so slightly cloudy amber, off-white head settles into thin but long lasting opaque film; the nose is malty, little toasty but I pick up mostly red fruit like yeast esters and some spicy hop character, this beer has natural character; the taste is more full of hops than the nose leads you to believe, there is a good dose of caramel like malt but its big on floral and spicy hops, perhaps a touch woody as well; mouthfeel is medium, its nice and full but still remains quite drinkable, there is a nice bitterness on the finish to counteract the malt, as any good amber should have; a well done beer.

I like this beer its mouthfeel is unique to me; like homebrew like but finishing very clean, I love the hop character it has, really glad to have tried this one, nice beer. Thank you for sending this one Eric, I very much appreciate it.

    --------------

I think that is it for me this weekend, unless I can sneak out somewhere, I will save my remaining beers from @vurt and shoot for two a weekend until I sadly run out. See you all tomorrow to talk more beer.

Next new beer is Coconut Stout from Pfriem in Oregon. 10.3% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a relatively thin black with almost no head. The nose is dark roasted malts, light coffee, a touch of vanilla, milk chocolate, and maybe a very slight hint of coconut.

The taste is nice and smooth. Again, not really getting much coconut here. Dark chocolate, roasted malts, a hint of toffee, and maybe a hint of coconut. It's super odd that the coconut is either absent or minimal at best. Still really good, but not necessarily what it was sold as.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a chocolate aftertaste.

I think I did this backwards, had the stout last night and had this one tonight.
The pour is the color of a well brewed tea with an impressive beige head that falls to leave any lacing.
The taste is that of bready malts, caramel, some vanilla and some bourbon.
Some dark fruit enters the frame but remains a minor player.
The feel is very lightly viscous, but the lack of alcohol heat made me drink it way too fast.
OA, very tasty, just doesn’t have the presence of other Revolution barrel aged beers.
It’s very tasty, but I may need another one.
    Cheers!

Social Project Brewing Kookies Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Stout, 8.1% ABV; 3.96 overall

Pours an effervescent mahogany with 2 fingers of mocha colored head. Traces of head retention & lacing, plenty viscous

S: Tons of vanilla & chocolate, certainly doughy. Coffee assert dominance once warmed up but the cookie dough is still there

T: Follows the nose, sort of dry, also coffee up front. More coffee, & cookie dough, fairly dry & s little bit of woody hops as this beer warms up. Finishes a little dry with plenty of chocolate chip cookie dough, roastyness & some coffee astringency that saves the day

MF: Medium body, fairly firm carbonation. Carbonation smooths out & the body thickens a bit once warm

Not all about the cookie dough, there is enough coffee to balance this out & keep it drinkable

Forest & Main - The Brewery - Deciduous
    5.4% ABV Smoked Lager
It's a delicious pale lager, made with smoked malt and hopped with Tettnanger and Hersbrucker. The smoke was present on the nose and stronger, yet balanced on the palate. I also got nice Nilla wafer and tea biscuit maltiness, along with lemony citrus and crisp pear notes. The finish was super dry with a moderate bitterness. Very drinkable and flavorful.

Tonight I am sampling one beer since its 17% ABV!! This is Armada Brewing in New Haven, CT and their ACHT Imperial stout. Part of their 8th anniversary package of imperial stouts. This one is bourbon barrel aged and has been in my cellar since I bought one at the brewery. Gonna see if there are more of these still for sale (spoiler, its good!)

    onto my review:
I am sampling a cellar temp 16 oz can at cellar temperature. Beer was purchased at the brewery in February during the 8th anniversary release. Been in my cellar since that day. All of the other variants of the 8th anniversary have been winners.
This beer pours jet black with no light passing through my glass, in fact, it seems like my glass sucks in light from the vicinity around the glass. Very dark pour. A fizzy beige head foams up about 0.5 cm and fades to almost nothing within a few minutes of the pour. There isnt much for lacing, but I do get a bit of red wine leg on the glass when I sip or swirl.
Aroma on this beer is a bit of charred dark bread, dark chocolate fudge, bourbon and mild vanilla mixing with some spicy fusol booze. No hop character on the nose.
First sip reveals a medium to thick body with very fine and gentle carbonation. Texture is relatively smooth and I dont get much coating on my palate. The beer with big ABV is dangerously drinkable. Take it slow my dudes!
Flavor is what the nose advertises. I get dark chocolate fudge and some roasted malt with bordering on charred notes. Some bourbon comes through but not really much sweetness on this beer. Never any hop character and the flavor that lingers after each sip is roast and dark chocolate with a little bit of warming in my belly. This is a solid bourbon barrel aged stout with hidden booze. Would be happy with another can of this bruiser!

    4.36 in the BA DB
