I am still trying to describe the beer to myself. Smoky? Yes. Farmhouse funky? Yup. Oaky, spicy, malty. Vegetal flavors from juniper root. An odd duck of a beer style… or do I need to try more? Cheers.

My thanks to @LesDewitt4beer for this beer.

Ive been a little absent from the thread this weekend. Bouncing around with chores and met up with friends at some breweries so didnt post photos etc. But I did drink a draft and buy cans of this beer and lm gonna share it with y'all now. Also , @jonphisher love the outdoor exploration story, thank you for sharing!!

This is Achilles, from Caius Farm Brewery right here in Branford, Connecticut. Im really happy that this spot is 10 minutes from my house.... my bank account may be a little less happy
The beer is a Breslau Style Schoeps aged in Apple Brandy Barrels and registers 8.7%. I added some history of the style to the beer page. Basically and old world style (14th century) featuring wheat, kolsch yeast and noble hops. I made it a dark wheat ale for BA after considering weizenbock. But the brewer describes it as an ale, even though it was cold lagered in those apple brandy barrels. anyway, spoiler, its very good!

    onto my review:

I am sampling a cellar temp 16 oz can poured into my snifter. I purchased the beer at the brewery yesterday during the release weekend.
The beer pours a deep, rich chestnut color with some ruby highlights exposed when held to a light source.
A dense creamy beige head of 1.5 cm foams up. This foam fades to a sturdy edging that remains through sampling, and creates some scattered lacing on sips from my glass.
Aroma is brown sugar, dark bread, some definite apple brandy sweetness and a little toffee. No hops and not boozy at all. Definitely sweeter aroma.
First sip reveals a medium body with smooth texture , very fine and prickly carbonation and overall the beer drinks pretty easy.
Flavor is similar to what the nose advertises with some light brown sugar and dark bread with general maltiness. The apple brandy shines through and carries into the finish. there is a a little bit of peppery bite on the finish , which I attribute to the ABV or maybe the barrel. Finish is also surprisingly dry.
Im really enjoying this beer and would gladly drink more and buy again. Easily worth the drink!
    4.44 in the BA DB

Right; I said I’d be back with something better.
Turns out I was 100% correct.
This was sent to me in the most recent Stout and Barleywine BIF by @DIM and it might be the last one I have from that wondrous BIF.
The pour is darker than most of the barleywines I’ve had, with a briefly lived beige head that left little lacing. For the time in barrels and the ABV, I almost expected a still beer.
The taste is probably the closest to my ideal barleywine that I’ve had. The toffee, the dates, the figs, the bready malts, the caramel - it just goes on and on. I savored every sip.
The feel is on the lighter side of viscous, this is a beer that begs to be savored over an evening. And so it did.
OA, very glad to have been able to enjoy this work of brewing art.

On a tangental related note, I have a Brew 6000 in my cellar that I meant to share last month, but I was surprised that I had already reviewed it. So it may show up soon in the Barleywine Appreciation thread.
Okay, enough blathering. Please don’t let this be the last post this weekend for this thread!

Missed seeing you at Bell’s yesterday but I know it’s more of a drive for you. I am a little envious of your proximity to Hopping Frog though. And Jackie O’s.
Which makes me think we are all very fortunate to live when we do; excellent beer abounds!

I'd have to drink way more than I have to offer a considered opinion. Low alcohol farmhouse fermentation, so the tastes may vary day to day & batch to batch

From the awesome BA @masamuel2 Chula Vista Brewery XELA West Coast IPA, 6.8% ABV; 4.02 overall

Pours a ever so slightly chill hazed gold with one finger of eggshell colored head. Zero head retention & lacing

S: Some citrus, melon, just builds as this gets warmer, a little white grape

T: Tangerine, pink grapefruit, dryness, mango, papaya & pine up front. Cattiness, dryness, pomelo & lime as this beer warms up, pink grapefruit too. Slight powdery dryness in the finish, orange, lime & cantaloupe as well

MF: Medium body, firm carbonation, lovely balance, body this a bit once warmer

Drinks so easy. If in my area, this would be in my rotation. So could drink this most of the year

    imperfect alignment FROM everywhere

Triple Imperial canned heat. Interesting aroma of tangerine and orange peel. Sweet and hot with alcohol, watch it when you breathe in. Quite fruity and then bitter. Tastes of orange and bitter grapefruit peel, but nothing like the orange juice taste of the hazies. This is not overly sweet, but it’s plenty bitter. Just right for sipping. Dated 02/11/26. Hopped with citra, citra dynaboost, simcoe, mosaic, mosaic hyperboost, strata, new zealand cascade, and riwaka.

One more even more new New Beer for the end of the weekend:

Irrelevant Beer Eidetic Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout
Aged in Bull Run Bourbon barrels for over 2 years

16-ounce can purchased at Belmont Station in Portland, OR this afternoon. Enjoyed in a nonic half-pint glass.

Effectively opaque black-brown body with attractive red-orange highlights at the edges. A heavy pour raises a thick head of biscuit brown foam that ebbs to a heavy collar and patchy skin that leaves clumpy lacing. The nose is roasted malt, marshmallows, whiskey, and fruity dark chocolate with a kiss of smoke. The flavor is largely the same, leading with vanilla, whiskey, chocolate syrup, and plum preserves. There's also caramel, black bread, a whiff of coffee. The finish is roasted malt, oak, vanilla, and booze with flecks of raisin and cocoa powder. Body seems thin for the beer's size, but is agreeably smooth. Overall, this is a good barrel-aged imperial stout and an excellent value for the price.

    Preach, brother Russ.

Fuller's ESB used to be my all around go-to beer back in the day. And their Chiswick Bitter was a revelation the last time I was in London (too many years ago).

But cask London Pride was in a class of its own. Malty, balanced, satisfying, and so sessionable.

Nine pages on a regular weekend - way to go!!!

I'd be curious to know how authentic this is. I've had one from DFH years ago but after researching the style I think "sahti adjacent" was more accurate. Traditionally the wort is not boiled, only mildly heated in wooden vessels, so its inherently unstable and highly variable as you stated. Its also flat and it has some body to it. It is a very ancient style that has some interesting history that's easy enough to find with The Google. It strikes me as the ultimate home brew - a little of this and that and minimal "process" other than traditional methods that nearly died out.

@Blogjackets - cool find even if it's a confusing one.
