It is that time again where we talk about a new beer(s) that we are drinking. For you regulars you know the drill: tell us about your drinking experiences with your new beer.

Plus any beer or non-beer related stories are much appreciated. Has spring arrived to your area with lots of flowers blooming? The NBW community is a indeed a great community so we all like to know what’s going on with you.

A new beer from the Granite State (New Hampshire)

I still remember my first visit to New Hampshire. My father was born and raised in Maine (small town of Winthrop near the capital city Augusta) and we would visit my grandmother (who still lived in Winthrop) every summer. One year we took a circuitous route returning home and did some camping in New Hampshire (White Mountain National Forest) and later Vermont (Green Mountain National Forest). Very pretty country in New England.

Today is my first beer from Schilling Beer Company (Littleton, NH): Alexandr

Below is how this beer is described on the Schilling website:

“Alexandr (Czech-style Pilsner), 5% abv. A sessionable pale lager inspired by similar Czech beers. Premium authentic raw materials shine, including Moravian pilsner malt—foundational to the substantial but rounded hop flavor and aroma.”

I refer to this sort of beer via the style name Bohemian Pilsner. In 2019 my wife and I went to Prague/Czech Republic for a two week vacation and needless to say a lot of Bohemian Pilsners were consumed over that two week period (plus many Tmavý Ležák – Czech Dark Lagers as well).

I wrote an article about the beer aspects of that vacation which you can read here:

    https://www.morebeer.com/articles/Czech_Beers

And for those of you who are interested in about the nitty gritty details of brewing you can read about how a Bohemian Pilsner is brewed in my article “The Family of Pilsners””

    https://www.morebeer.com/articles/Pilsen_Beer

It has been a while since I have conducted a side-by-side taste test so today is time for another.

And to have a Battle Royale we need a competitor so in the ‘other corner’ will be my recently homebrewed Bohemian Pilsner. I brew a batch of this beer every year.

From an ingredient perspective this is a fairly simple beer:

    · Mostly Moravian Pilsner Malt but there is some Vienna Malt for depth of color/flavor and augmenting the body of the beer

    · Sterling Hops for the bittering addition

    · Czech Saaz hops generously used for both flavor and aroma additions

    · Bohemian Lager yeast

While the ingredient list is simple the brewing process for making a Pilsner (lager) is not so simple – lots of process steps needed.

    Are you ready to RUMBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Served in my Polish Pilsner glasses:

    Appearance:

Alexandr: Straw yellow colored with a thin white head (which dissipate all too quickly).

Jack’s BoPils: Harvest gold colored with a four finger white head; excellent head retention.

    Aroma:

Alexandr: Predominantly a sweet-ish Pilsner Malt aroma.

Jack’s BoPils: A prominent combination of bready and spicy/herbal aromas.

    Taste:

Alexandr: The flavor very much follows the nose with mostly a sweet-ish Pilsner Malt flavor. There is a tiny hint of herbal hop flavor. There is a firm bitterness.

Jack’s BoPils: The flavors follow the nose with notable flavors of bready and spicy/herbal. There is a firm bitterness.

    Mouthfeel:

Alexandr: This beer is medium bodied with a dry finish.

    Jack’s BoPils: Ditto.

    Overall:

Alexandr: If I was handed this beer blind I would have commented that it is a tasty German Pilsner albeit a tad one dimensional.

Jack’s BoPils: This beer is very good. A depth of bready malt flavor accompanied with a notable spicy/herbal flavor.

My wife was watching me as was conducting this side-by-side taste test. She requested a taste of both beers. I told her since I had an ‘extra’ beer she could have one. She selected Jack’s BoPils.

    Cheers!

Thanks @JackHorzempa for getting us started this lovely mid-April weekend (I can't believe it's already mid-April!)! A quick question, as your pils is noticeably darker: is that consistent with your experiences abroad with Czech pilsners? I wouldn't expect a commercial pilsner to be that dark (although it's certainly explained by the Vienna malt). Just curious if that's your own personal twist, or if you aimed to replicate what you tried abroad.

My first new beer of the weekend was slightly delayed, as my first beer wasn't new (and therefore does not qualify for this thread, although it was delicious). So after a false start, I've backed up 5 yards, and cracked open Summer Life, a collaboration between Urban Roots and Sun King.

Summer Life is a bourbon barrel aged "Summer Barleywine," whatever that means (after drinking half the beer, I still don't quite know), and it clocks in at 12% ABV. Whew!

The first whiff is intimidating, and suggests that Summer perhaps means American. It's potent, hoppy, and boozy. After that initial shock, however, subsequent sniffs suggest it's actually quite a bit maltier and smoother. (My partner had the same experience with the nose.)

In terms of flavor, again this leans into the English/British style, malty and nutty. Notes of pecan, bourbon, oak, caramel grain, brown sugar, leather, grape, date, prune, and toffee.

It's a bit fizzy, so sipping and savoring really requires small amounts at a time. Really damn smooth overall, though; while it's obviously a potent beer, the alcohol is never harsh, instead reserving its heat for the trip down your esophagus and building in your chest.

I'm not sure how many more barleywines I have on hand (if any!), but if this is my one contribution to a mini-theme this weekend, I'm good with it!

I should also point out that this delicious day starter came courtesy of @Xul in the tremendously insane NBS BIF #13. As this is the official share weekend, and boxes have been flying like crazy the last two weeks, expect this to be one of many posts celebrating the BIF. :grinning:

The color of the Bohemian Pilsners brewed in the Czech Republic and Slovakia varied. Some were lighter in color (straw yellow) and others were darker (medium gold). My favorite imported Bohemian Pilsner is Golden Pheasant. Have you ever tasted this beer? I did a side-by-side tasting of Golden Pheasant and my homebrewed Bohemian Pilsner in a past NBS thread:

Excellent kickoff @JackHorzempa ! Loving the spring weather, had a few days off of watering the grass due to the rain which has already cancelled the Sox game today. Trying to get grass seedings to take in an area beyond my patio that doesn't get as much rain and sun as it should.

Also loved your Pilsner comparison, your brew is darker than the typical, I take it the Vienna Malt is responsible, saw many dark lagers on your website trip picks. were there many Czechoslovakia Pilsners available? I don't recall coming across that here, domestic or foreign.

I started a little earlier here, before the rain cam. Starting the weekend with a local saison, brewed by John Laffler, one of the many great brewers who graduated from the Goose Island brewing tree.

Bottle Notes: Really cool artwork, recreation of the 6/21/69 moonwalk. Funky Farmhouse Ale. 7.8% ABV, Gravity 16P, IBUs 21. Malts: Pils, Flaked Wheat, Special Aromatic Dark Munich. Hops: Galaxy, Kazbee, Sterling. Secret Ingredients: Oxygen. Funky. No date, but released the week of 1/22/21 per social media.

    Appearance:
Single pour into a large tulip, beautiful orange clear base, darker at the top, lighter golden at the base. Persistent carbonation throughout, creamy rich head lasts for several minutes, leaving a luxurious lacing on the glass and over the base. 4.5

Aroma: Heavy Belgian yeast dominates the aroma, light citrus back, likely the galaxy hops. Light funkiness as well. 3.75

Taste: Consistent with the aroma, Belgian yeast dominant, light sweet backing of citrus. Negligible funk. 3.5

Mouthfeel: Light fizzy carbonation lingers throughout, light to medium body, somewhat creamy, neutral taste profile, dryness throughout, easy clean finish. 4.0

Overall: This is a good saison, though not as complex as I was hoping for. Belgian yeast, minimal funk was disappointing. slightly dry, minimal complexity. Good, but prefer other Off Color offerings. 3.75

Will return tomorrow with two lagers, one dark, from a new to me suburban brewery I've been waiting to try for New Beer Sunday 841.

I have neither tried, nor even seen (to my recollection), Golden Pheasant. Slovakian, to boot!

I have to say, due to freshness concerns (primarily) and lack of knowledge on which imported lagers are more representative of "quality" (what we call craft) - vice big brewers - I don't typically grab a Continental lager off the shelf unless I've already heard of it (say, with Kölsch). So my experiences are limited - but I figured your experiences abroad are even more valuable in determining what is "normal" for the style.

Thanks for the links! Cheers, Jack!

Well, "normal" can be tricky I suppose.

An extract from my article The Family of Pilsners (with emphasis in bold):

    "Examples of Bohemian Pilsners

Needless to say but the eponymous Bohemian Pilsner is Pilsner Urquell. My preference in the US is the canned version and luckily for me I can often find these relatively fresh.

Another imported Bohemian Pilsner (Czech Pale Lager) is branded as Czechvar for the US market; this beer is branded as Budweiser Budvar in country by the brewery Budějovický Budvar (České Budějovice, Czech Republic).

The qualities of Bohemian Pilsner can vary quite a bit within the Czech Republic. If you ever get a chance to visit I would encourage you to try the following beers: Bernard Světlé Ležák 12°, Kamenice Světlé Ležák 12°, and Únětický Pivo 12°. The terminology of 12° refers to the original gravity of the beer and Světlé Ležák translates to Pale Lager."

    Cheers!

P.S. While in Prague I purchased a bottle of Golden Pheasant at the local Tesco supermarket. :yum:

Good afternoon everyone! The newest addition to the family had her baptism this morning so we’re having brunch with the immediate family today. I wanted to get a start on the NBS BIF #13 official tasting weekend, so I brought along a bottle that @Roy_Hobbs sent my way - Fox Farm Varonna.

Pours a cloudy, hazy bright yellow color. Fizzy, off-white head appears and disappears off the top of the beer quickly. Aroma has notes of spicy yeast, bright citrus, grain, a light funk, and lemongrass.

Taste follows the nose with a lovely blend of bright lemon citrusy notes, spicy yeast, grain, a mild funk. There is a light spiciness that lingers on the palate, but it also has a pretty short finish. Feel is light to medium bodied. Brightly carbonated. Mildy dry finish.

Overall this is a lovely farmhouse ale. The Norwegian yeast adds this lovely mild citrus to the beer. It’s light, and weirdly in a way I don’t usually see from farmhouse ales - refreshing and “crushable”. It seems odd to say I’m impressed by something from Fox Farm, since I already have such a high opinion of them, but this impressed me.

    Thank you so much @Roy_Hobbs!

Back with another @Xul -provided Cali beer: What the Ek???, a 100% Ekuanot-hopped WC-style IPA from North Park (in the provided glassware, naturally).

From the description: "100% Ekuanot hopped DDH West Coast IPA with Ekuanot Incognito, Ekuanot Cryo, and more Ekuanot." 7.4% ABV

This is definitely a feature presentation for Ekuanot hops (formerly Equinox). Dank, piney, and fruity in almost equal amounts, this is a bitter and resinous throwback IPA using new school hops and techniques.

If there's a drawback, it's that there's an almost dirty, earthy flavor for a good portion of the sip, almost like you're chewing on unwashed hop cones that fell in the dirt. That's not enough to keep me from crushing my way through this one, however - and if you're a big fan of the Ekuanot varietal, this is the beer for you!

You don't have an emergency supply of barleywines on hand, should you find yourself needing to open four, five, even six different examples of malty splendor in the course of an afternoon? :astonished:

Glad you enjoyed the Summer Life! I'm a fan of the beer just on its own merits, but when you factor in the $6/12oz price point, it's rather insane. I'm finding myself wishing I had stocked up considerably more than I did. Damn me and my occasional flirtations with responsible choices...

Normally I am drinking the 11 degree from this brewery, as it is a beer that is very often on tap in Prague and one that I am really used to and really enjoy. I stopped by the brewery today to grab some cans of the 11 and decided on a whim to also grab a couple of the 12 degree as I had never had it and it is my first time trying it. And wow, kind of wish I was buying the 12 degree more often and will definitely do so in the future.

It's a spectacular early spring day here in New England. Low 70's and sunny. I had originally eyed up some different beers for today, but with this weather, I called an audible and dug into my stash of beer I received courtesy of @Whyteboar in NBS BIF #12 last fall. This one is Incipient, a foeder aged solera sour ale with blood oranges from Speciation Artisan Ales. Speciation hasn't let me down yet, let's see if that holds true here.
As expected, this was really good. Perfect beer for today.

Crystal clear, apple juice colored beer. Small amount of very short-lived fizzy white head. Aroma certainly hints that this beer will be plenty tart. The tart / funk is the dominant aroma, with the blood orange lurking beneath it. Taste is where this beer shines (which is of course, a pretty important category to nail). Whether it's the blood orange, or the character picked up from the foeder, or maybe just the underlying base beer, it's damn tasty. For those just getting into this style, this may not be the best option, as it's plenty tart, but for those who love the style (looks in mirror), it has just enough sour to get your attention, but without getting out of balance. Carbonation is on the lower end. Overall, very tasty.

p.s. @FBarber glad to see you cracked open that Varonna. I love that beer.

    Hey what's going on?!

Well I am down and drinking some new beers! Big shot out to @JackHorzempa there, and for making me jealous about how I still haven't made it to Prague in my life... some day...

But with all that said, I am toning things down these days, but there's always new beer to be had. So I grabbed one of these, oh!!! Is this what all the young cool kids are drinking now?! Milkshake IPAs?? this is a thing... let's see what this here said "thing" is...

what's new for our hero today.

Poured from the can, into a Spiegelau IPA glass.

Fairly clear bodied, with a real nice copper and brass like color. I figured a milkshake IPA was going to be a sludgy turbid appearance, but even this is a real nice almost mixing light bock color, with very clarity and carbonation. Fluffy topped three finger head, off white, more of a vanilla yellow and tight bubbled. Super sheets of lacing. Great looking beer otherwise, but with that milkshake moniker I am not sold, so we call it good either way.

Mild sensing pineapple aroma of hop, and a noticeable touch of vanilla and maybe even some caramel malt squeaking through. It is though a bit faint, with the cream like character dominating more so.

So this is unexpected. Heavily sugar sweetened of milk like lactose as a guess, and flavorful fruit. Pineapple shake, and upside-down cake hit the mid palate easily, with a cake like icing sugar feeling. Finishes with a mild bitterness to take this in for balance. Lots of pineapple juice, and manages to stay away from chalk flavor, and gets more into a real light icing sugar that is barely sweet. Hints with frosting and pineapple and a touch of booze, and the icing character gives a real nice boost to mouthfeel and stays away from sugar bombing.

This is neat, and probably should have read the can a bit more. Added lactose and actually pineapple, makes sense. Definitely I think though this fits more in a fruit beer realm, but that cake like flavor really makes a nice splash.

    look: 4 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25 | 4.06/5

    Cheers!
